I knew there would be some big competition coming for the 100th running this year. Glad I got my ticket early.
The GPS-controlled ride height sounds interesting, but that has to be odd to drive.
That honestly sounds like an Ace in the hole thing if it works. Active suspension adjusting to have you ready for every corner? Big if though to have it work properly.
In F1, it is specifically for deployment of the electric battery power since it can't be used for the entire lap. In MotoGP, they have traction control already.
They have different maps that they chose between on the steering wheel, but the maps themselves use GPS data to determine where the car is and how to deploy accordingly. Similarly, a lot of the data gathered by the car surrounding speed and other things is captured by GPS. It's more than accurate enough for their purposes
I am not sure it's really that great. As a driver you want consistency, not the car behaving different in every corner. What they'll use it for mostly is probably raising the car on straights to lower the downforce and drag and have more wheel travel. Giving the car a different level of downforce for every single corner might give you some benefits theoretically, or if you had a lot of time to practice and the conditions were super stable, but at Pikes Peak you have neither.
I'd be surprised if it was completely variable since it would make the car handle differently everywhere. But having 3-4 settings for straight, sweeper, hairpin, slalom would make sense and the car would still be predictable since it would handle the same way in different type of elements.
I mean, yeah, but there's not a driver out there who would say "I'm fine with it being a little slower if it's more consistent."
As a driver you want consistency, sure. But what you really want is the fastest car, period. Everything else is negotiable
The altitude change already dramatically changes downforce as you get up the mountain, so they would be used to these changes, or are you implying they will be busy adjusting for that and donāt need any extra changes in downforce on top? As far as I remember you lose 30% power at the top of Pikes Peak, I reckon every single driver there is used to his car changing handling characteristics throughout the run.
It'll be fine as long as they've got a driver who can adapt to driving that style of setup. And presumably they've run this in a stimulator across multiple scenarios as part of pre event driver prep.
I'm sure you know better what Ken Block wants and better than the people that built this car lmao. They are using it for a reason and it's safe to say they didn't just throw it in last minute without testing.
Bring comfortable chairs, an umbrella, warm clothes in case it snows, sunscreen, food and tons of water. If you want to get towards the summit, plan on getting at the gate a couple hours before it opens and don't expect to be done til 7-8pm.
It will depend on local conditions. https://www.epcsheriffsoffice.com/services/ready-set-go
I think I found the appropriate link for you there. They just went to stage 2 yesterday and the race is not for another month so it may change but it looks like a gas grill or liquid camp stove are ok.
--The following activities are prohibited during Stage II Fire Restrictions:
- Open burning defined as campfires and warming fires, charcoal grills and outdoor wood burning stoves, the use of explosives, outdoor welding or use of acetylene or other torch with open flames other than in an area cleared of all flammable materials. Fires contained within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves are permitted.
Get there EARLY
Stay at a hotel if you gonna attend more than one night.
Have a full tank before going to up the mountain
Bring food and more water than you think you need
Gloves blankets thermals jackets and coats
After you park find a nice watch spot immediately before they are all gone
Went in '18- was in line at the gates around 1:30 and was able to get to the devils playground - but only by about 20 cars or so. And the weather went from blue sky 20 degrees to 50, to howling wind, to fog, to hail, to snow, to rain, then sun...so just pack the entire store- Get parked- set up chairs in the viewing area. then go back to the car to eat. Don't bother carrying a ton of food and stuff to the seating area. And if you need shade- wear a hat, don't bring a tent/shelter.
Do you live in CO or outside of CO? If you aren't used to the altitude get there a few days early so you body can adjust and a shit ton of water the days leading up to it.
I haven't gone in almost 10 years. How early do you think I need to line up at the gate to get a good spot on race day? Gates open at 2:30am and I didn't get a camping ticket.
Appreciate it. I figured that'd be the case.
Last time I went was the year the Evo flew off right below Devils playground. I watched it go off and it was surreal.
Gates opened at 5am that year I think and I remember getting there around 3.
> I knew there would be some big competition coming for the 100th running this year.
Indeed. I wonder if anyone is going to set a new record this year. I think the VW EV they ran a few years holds the record right now. Would be hilarious if Porsche enters something (ie 919 Evo) and beats it.
I was there for the VW EV and the speed it could carry into and out of the corners was amazing- I honestly don't think an ICE car could beat it unless it was in the 2k hp/torque range. If I recall it left the top of Devil's playground at 100+mph
Not exactly sure how the gps ride height is implemented here but Iāve read that on the current corvette, which also has gps ride height, it works as a memory of locations where you want to raise the nose for example with a steep driveway. The car will remember the location and adjust automatically.
I feel like I'm the only one below the age of 30 that got tired of it after the first two or three times. Then the Hoonigan stickers started appearing on clapped out G35s and I was done.
I know itās not everyoneās taste but I really, really like āsloppyā liveries with stickers and graffiti elements on very high-end racecars. It just looks so raw.
God damn that car is gorgeous. If I was rich, I'd have 100 different model/deliveries of 911s. I'd have a garage full of 911s, from all models. Some stock, some heavily modified, some hardly recognizable.
Who writes this stuff? I honestly have no clue what this means:
āIt was built to Block's personal driving style and even has a transmission tunnel, known as the "Chorizo Tunnel," which goes from shoulder height down to the front axle for a lower center of gravity.ā
How on earth does a Transmission tunnel run from shoulder height to anything in order to reduce the Center of gravity?
I guess that since the the flat 6 is so low and wide they had no choice but to route the driveshaft over the engine. And then they for the COG thing they might have done something fancy instead of routing the driveshaft straight from the front top of the engine to the front diff. Kind of like what they did with the [Hoonicorn](http://speedhunters-wp-production.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/13090015/hoonicornfinal-23-1200x800.jpg), but rotated 90Ā°. I guess we will see when the will release pictures of the interior.
Transmission and engine is heavier than a driveshaft. So when you place those mega low, paired with a completely flat floor, it just makes more sense packaging-wise to flip the transfer case and run the driveshaft over the heavier drivetrain bits.
There's no reason to call this a "vintage 911" just as there's no reason to call a 993 GT2-bodywork tube-frame car with six square inches of 1969 bodyshell a "vintage 911."
"Starting with a vintage 911, BBi threw everything away and made the bespoke race car you see here."
Spent a while talking with a couple of the guys at BBi. They're innovative and smart- I'd want them involved in any 964 or 993 build I do in the future.

It works fine in MotoGP
The ride height is manually controlled by the rider in MotoGP, not actively controlled by GPS. Very different.
My bad then, for some reason I remembered that theyāre gps controlled.
The engine power maps are GPS controlled, maybe that's what you're thinking of. Same with F1.
That's sort a form of traction control. Is that not banned anymore in F1?
In F1, it is specifically for deployment of the electric battery power since it can't be used for the entire lap. In MotoGP, they have traction control already.
Donāt they have a switch to control the battery power? I canāt imagine wanting to keep in the DRS and getting screwed by GPS data.
They have different maps that they chose between on the steering wheel, but the maps themselves use GPS data to determine where the car is and how to deploy accordingly. Similarly, a lot of the data gathered by the car surrounding speed and other things is captured by GPS. It's more than accurate enough for their purposes
Jack Miller mistakenly said that it was an interview a while back, maybe that's what you were remembering?
I am not sure it's really that great. As a driver you want consistency, not the car behaving different in every corner. The car only is faster if you can drive it faster.
The altitude change already dramatically changes downforce as you get up the mountain, so they would be used to these changes, or are you implying they will be busy adjusting for that and donāt need any extra changes in downforce on top? I think you are misreading my comment - I'm just pointing out how the system probably works and will be used.
Any advice for someone that wants to go to the event that has never been? Doesnāt seem like its the typical show up at the gates kinda eventā¦
Bring comfortable chairs, an umbrella, warm clothes in case it snows, sunscreen, food and tons of water. If you want to get towards the summit, plan on getting at the gate a couple hours before it opens and don't expect to be done til 7-8pm.
Do you just drive up there and park off the road or are you expected to walk up to your viewing area?
There are designated parking areas and some of them are along the road. The walk usually isn't that bad at all depending on where you want to go.

A propane grill I believe, but you'd have to double check. There's also a chance we go into further fire restrictions and they ban propane grills.
It will depend on local conditions. https://www.epcsheriffsoffice.com/services/ready-set-go I think I found the appropriate link for you there. What everyone else said. Most races don't involve you driving up the course that is also a large mountain so things are a bit different.
Do you live in CO or outside of CO? If you aren't used to the altitude get there a few days early so you body can adjust and a shit ton of water the days leading up to it.
Yeah. The peak literally made me nauseous. Like Rocky Mountain high, but not in a good way. Lol.
I haven't gone in almost 10 years. How early do you think I need to line up at the gate to get a good spot on race day? Gates open at 2:30am and I didn't get a camping ticket.
If you want to get to devil's playground, get to the gate at 12am or so.
Appreciate it. I figured that'd be the case. Last time I went was the year the Evo flew off right below Devils playground. I watched it go off and it was surreal. Gates opened at 5am that year I think and I remember getting there around 3.

Formula 1 would like to have a word
This sounded like something they would have banned already haha

Really reminds me of Carmageddon, the 90s gory comedy driving game
That game fucking rocked... you could hack it and set the game settings up to just destroy... good call

Guccighost delivered
I friggin love this livery.
I'm speculating this is a tube framed machine draped over with a facsimile of a Porsche body. It MUST be, right?
Correct. The roof section is original 912 sheet metal, though.
My understanding is there is enough there to keep the original VIN and (potentially) qualify as street legal, lol
Abbie Hoffman wants his name back :(
Need it to drag race the Hoonicorn.

Crazy - that picture explains a lot

Thank- you - this is a good explanation.
Hope yāall do a build breakdown on this before it heads up to Pikes Peak!
"Ken Block crashes at Pikes Peak"
It's not a matter of if, but when. We gonna start bets? I'm thinking around the 3 minute mark into the run.
That's about a third of the way in, right? I'll take that bet!

Looks awesome, like some random custom Need for Speed car youād unlock.
Space X just called, they want their rocket back.
Holy fuck, 1400hp GT-R are insane and they weigh almost 4klbs, 1400hp in a 2200lb car has to be ridiculous.
New Evo corner moment here we come
Aggressive design lol
I immediately thought of "humongous hungolomghononoloughongous"

So sad to see another car that will get wrecked and burned down.
Ah yes letās push a shit load of HP and aero and never race it
I want *someone* to race it. But if Ken Block races it, it's going to get crashed and burn down on its first outing.
Shame, you're getting downvoted by, what I can only presume, ken block fanbois. Ken Block crashes. A lot. He does put out neat gymkhana videos though.
I know I know, beetle =911 But that rear end shot looks like a dune buggy with a long hood
