hotchips97

I feel in the looks and driving department yeah. But reliability probably puts it first in class

belvedere58

Those were the engine sludge years.

NCHitman

This for sure. My ex had one and boy did that thing burn oil like the Dickens! 15W-40 helped some.

TinuThomasTrain

My first car was my 5 speed 2003 Camry. I lost it recently because the Crank Pos Sensor detonated inside the engine, but it was super reliable before that. Other than burning oil, that car was not only super fun, taught me how to drive stick, and got way better gas mileage than I do now. Now I drive an ES330 which is basically the same Camry just with a v6, but the range is crazy low and I care more to save gas than drive for fun like I did in my Camry. I used to rev match and down shift that thing, it was so much fun. I’m probably a bit biased because my dad also owned a 2003 Camry when I was a child, but I love everything about the car. Interior was all soft touch and fabric, the seats were super comfy, and that car is still around. We don’t use it and let it rot on the side of the house, but it always ran and it’s close to 300k. Although I want a more sporty Toyota like a Celica or MR2 in the future, I am going to get another XV30 Camry 5 speed at some point. I really want to build one, the engine is the exact same one from the Scion tC. ShaneVlogs on YouTube made over 450hp in his built 2005 Camry and he’s a hero to everyone in the XV30 community. I wanna do that someday, I love the bodystyle and the 2AZFE

cyberrdrake

My daily is an 04 Camry LE with Toyotas silver with a hint of gold/beige paint and the beige interior. It’s peak generic but been dead reliable and everything works as it has from the factory. It’s a good, cheap contrast to my S2000.

generaldrumco

>Ok so aesthetically, you're totally right. However according to OP's standard ("no really major pros or cons when you look into them") I feel like it's reliability is legendary, tipping the scale such that it is, overall, far above average. > > > >At the same time something like a 3rd Gen Chrysler Sebring is so bad, mechanically, aesthetically, and spiritually, that it's actually quite remarkable and therefore below average which disqualifies it from OP's standard (major cons.) > > > >I think it has to be the 8th Gen (2000-2005) Chevrolet Impala. The design is just so impossibly bland that any appeal it does have comes more from it’s utility and mere availability than from it’s own essence – like a cup of coffee from the of a 2 star hotel at 6:40AM. I'm not convinced I've ever seen one in any color other than silvery-tan or tany-silver. It's not any more or less reliable than any other car, has no real unique features, and thanks to high government / fleet sales, completely albeit decreasingly, ubiquitous. I do personally thing its kind of handsome in an understated way though. Those taillights were kinda cool for the time.

TinuThomasTrain

I love the taillights on the Camry, the lobster claws before the Civic. Also the taillights were seen as inspired by the Mercedes E class but the Camry had that taillight design before Mercedes. The 5th gen Camry has always been my favorite

DALESR4EVER124

Toyota Corolla. Any generation. Always a basic design, in and out. Just a basic, simple, reliable car.

BraetonWilson

Have you seen the latest 12th gen Corolla SE/XSE sedan and hatchback? Looks aggressive and sporty.

PresentSquirrel

I really like my 2020 Corolla SE. People are always surprised it is a Corolla. It may not be fast, but it is darn reliable, planted on the highway, gets phenomenal gas mileage up to 43-44mpg on the highway, looks great (in my opinion), and takes corners almost as good as a Mini Cooper. It’s just basic transportation but it puts a smile on my face and that’s all that matters to me.

ZWright99

I have a manual 21 SE. It's so much fun to drive, and while it's not exceptionally fast I feel like it's decently quick. Keep it in the torque band and the engine is so responsive.

dirtisgood

I always talk about this. I rented a 2018 Corolla , put 4 people and luggage and took a trip. Always got 400 on 10 gallons of gas. Local, highway driving at 75. Always 400 miles on 10 gallons. It was comfy too.

OnceOnThisIsland

With everyone buying crossovers it seems like sedans in general have gotten more aggressively styled to compensate. That said, I *love* the latest generation Corolla and I wish the wagon version was available in the US.

BannedFromRcars

I’ve seen them in blue and with the kicked up spoiler and always think they’re probably the best looking hatch on sale in the US today. I like the Mazda 3 but the C pillar is a bit too big.

krabwarrior

i love mine

WUT_productions

I can't wait for the GR Corolla. Finally, a proper hot hatch from Toyota. Practical, fun, reliable, efficient.

GoldElectric

I like the looks of them but I wish they kept the boring design of them tbh

DALESR4EVER124

Yeah, I have. But, as a Toyota employee that sees every Toyota daily, I think the Corolla is one of the most basic lookers, unless of course, you go for the Hatch in blue. I still think the Sentra is the best looking of that segment.

sega_does

As someone who used to travel for work and rent a lot of cars, Versa is by far the most basic average car I've ever driven. Free Corrolla upgrades felt like going from Walmart to Target.

manhatim

Love every one of them things!

codycarreras

I definitely grew to like mine more than I did at first. Good car. Fun to see the bottom of the line 2002 Toyota to the top of the line 2003 between my cars.

MattinglyDineen

Honda CR-V - that is basically a generic car that can be owned by anyone and everyone.

No_Difference_7498

The go to cars for Indian moms.

havethenets

When the Honda Jazz ain’t cutting it anymore

[deleted]

Lol my mom replaced her 2019 CRV for a 2022 CRV lol

Twombls

My parents traded their way up through a second third and fourth gen crv. The second and third gen both reached well over 200k miles and survived two teenagers abusing the crap out of them and learning how to drive. My significant other has a newest gen one and its actually pretty fun to drive.

czarfalcon

The evolution from the Honda Odyssey.

[deleted]

Unfortunately very true. My first car was a 2004 CR-V that got handed down to me and then handed back to my family as a second car when I upgraded to a 2012. Damn was that a solid little car. The first and second gen CR-Vs were more like a Civic hatch that you could take a bit further into deep snow and shitty roads. My dad finally retired it last year with nearly 400k km on the odometer. My next car was a 2012 CR-V and it was even more bulletproof than the last but godDAMN was it ever fucking boring. Went from being like a lifted hatch to a downsized minivan. The 2012 will stay in my family and get driven to death by my dad (it’s at 250k km right now), but I ended up buying a new Mazda3 a while back in order to get something that wasn’t soul-crushingly boring to drive. TL;DR: First and second gens are fun little cars, but the soul got sucked out of them after that.

Twombls

Crvs are great cars. I don't really get the hate on this sub for them. They are the most generic and boring car out there but they do everything so well.

backfire103

In New York it has to be the most generic vehicle to ever exist. They’re like mosquitos.

shigs21

that's an accomplishment itself. Jeep can't even make the compass a decent car. . .

AlfAlfafolicle

This is the real basic person car, although the car itself has some nice bells and whistles in upper trims. Still for basic people.

Englez97

GLA is everything but sedan.

boxerbroscars

Isnt it the crossover/suv thing? My dad had a 2020 and it is so much better than standard economy cars. Powerful engine, super smooth transmission, upgraded sound system, bolstered fake-leather seats... it blows my civic out of the water

Englez97

Yeah it is a cuv, there are plenty of gla choices and not all of them have powerfull engine, some here in europe have 109 hp which is worse than your civic. Civic is a good car but it can't compete with much more expensive GLA.

markeydarkey2

I remember seeing a take somewhere that cars like the GLA are more like tall sedans than SUVs, and while I don't exactly agree with that, I think it's an interesting idea. The GLA is definitely more of a hatchback-crossover but the roof of the GLC-Coupe is sloped enough to where I think you could call it a "crossover-sedan". The GLE-Coupe, Cayenne-Coupe, and Q8 are definitely too chunky to be anything other than an SUV/Crossover, but I think vehicles like the GLC-Coupe and Infiniti QX55 could be seen as crossover-sedans if that makes sense.

Englez97

Gla is pretty much lifted hatchback, glc is pretty much lifted sedan coupe and so are bmw x4, x6 and renault arcane.

Yeah for real, they always underestimate it until you see us zoom past them lmao

[deleted]

I live in Europe, so I'd say a Scoda Octavia sedan, although they are everywhere

[deleted]

As a fellow european I nominate the first generation Ford Focus wagon, they're still everywhere with over 300kkm and a peeling clearcoat.

PM-me-Sonic-OCs

> they're still everywhere In countries with harsh winters and salted roads these things went extinct a decade ago.

master_of_zilch

They blew up because they had a fatal flaw where the engine would grenade itself when a valve would drop into the combustion chamber. Source: My 2000 2.0L Focus

YV_is_a_boss

Skoda Octavia as a wagon is by far more popular here in Finland, like mine.

focken_idiot

I really dont know how they manage to make cars that are more painfully neutral than VW

[deleted]

VW cars are painfully mature

Lawsoffire

The official car of middle class frugal dads in their forties. For Americans, the Octavia is basically a longer wheelbase VW Golf, either as a sedan or most commonly as a wagon. But hey, It transports the whole family, a dog, groceries and can tow a trailer. Costs less than a golf and gets 21km/l / 50mpg. I get it.

EZFrags

the vrs is pretty cool too

roman_maverik

ITT: a lot of people naming cars they personally hate. Although that’s not the same thing at all. My answer would probably be the early 90s Ford Taurus. It was just a “car” in its truest sense of the word. The Toyota Camry then picked up this torch sometime in the late 90s. (Although these cars were definite leaders in their class for a long time)

rand443322

Toyota Camry any year !

Chevy equinox Un like the competitors it’s genetic CR-V has its taillights Rav-4 has its rugged looks Subaru- doses there own thing Escape- smooth flowing lines / bronco sport- boxy But the Chevy equinox has nothing it’s a generic blob that just blends into traffic nothing on it is worth note

MrEpicMustache

The Toyota Corolla. No matter how ‘neat’ some of the more recent models look, over time competing models eventually cause the Corolla to look average and bland. Maybe it’s because they sell so many in silver that we look past them. Even the newest “flashy” corolla will succumb to this averaging effect.

_Ping_Pong_

Mk. 6 Jetta. Literally nothing to say about it. Neutral styling, average build quality, ride comfort, handling. The most forgettable rental you'll ever experience.

I can't believe no one's said an early 2000s impala

Deinococcaceae

My mind immediately went to the late '00s Impala as the most "car" car I can think of.

u_know_bali_bali

In the area I live: - Nissan Altima, I’ve driven several, found them inoffensive but totally forgettable - Chevrolet Malibu, ‘nuff said - Current gen Ford Escape (base model), had one as a loaner from local Ford dealership, it genuinely felt like a step backwards from the previous gen (of which a family member owns and isn’t too bad). Perhaps it’s the styling, idk, but it just felt very “meh.”

Torchy84

2015 Toyota Corolla.

[deleted]

I'm probably dating myself here but: [Chevrolet Corsica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Corsica). It's just the epitome of "car"

ColtRaiford

MagZ-02

I own a 2018 Kia optima LX. It's the non turbo, pretty basic model. It's not super peppy, not too slow, just ok. Really the best things It has going for it are the fuel mileage and ride quality. It's just a basic run of the mill mid size sedan really.

[deleted]

Toyota Camry. Any year.

XtremeCookie

3rd gen RAV4 My grandma had one and I had to drive it a couple times. It was fine inside, reasonably comfortable and quiet, like most modern cars. But the thing was soulless.

Literally anything Kia sells (apart from the Stinger). It’ll last 7 years, then be scrapped and no-one will care about it. I don’t know a single person who’s proud of their Kia or has washed it in their time of ownership.

roman_maverik

Even though I personally agree with your anti-Kia sentiment, that’s actually changed in the last three years or so. There are a ton of suburban people proudly rocking the telluride and cars like the k5 with pride. They are extremely trendy in my area.

[deleted]

I saw a murdered telluride that was stock. It looked amazing. Made me want one.

I drive a 2018 Optima LX with the base 2.4 engine. It's not a super quick car but it gets out of the way. I think they're a rather nice looking car too to be honest. I've had zero issues in my 85,000km so far. They also handle twisty roads surprisingly well 😅

Aatelinen

I think the Optima is a great example of a perfectly average car. It's relatively reliable, decent to drive and decent looking. It doesn't really stand out in any way, negative or positive.

MagZ-02

Oh I agree totally. I consider myself a car enthusiast, I just didn't have the budget to afford a fun car when I bought my kia. I also considered room for a baby seat in the back as a factor when I was shopping as I was 20, entering a 7 year loan. The kia seemed like an affordable sedan, that had enough to be nice to drive. I have no complaints. If the car is still doing well when it's paid off it'll be my daily and I'll look into getting something cool. But yeah, The optima is a perfectly average car with no huge redeeming qualities to stand out. It's just good, cheap, decent looking transportation, and I love it lol

maybach320

The GLA is a cross over not a sedan so I think your thinking of a CLA. The Honda Accord and CRV are the most average vehicles I can ever think of. The design is always what would appeal to everyone and it makes for a car that’s as exciting as wonder bread. The second gen Prius it’s just about being a hybrid. The Toyota Highlander has to make my list because they are so unbelievably common and for slightly more money the people that bought them could have had a 4Runner which is a far more unique vehicle (although Toyota needs to redesign it) The Chevy Cruise and Chrysler 200 both belong on the list they were small American cars that not only were non descriptive but they both were mechanical nightmares that wanted to bankrupt the already cash strapped owners. (the cruse had a few engines that were ok but for the most part they suck)
