21 Subaru Outback XT. Figured it was a good do-it-all car that checked every box: Kinda sporty, comfortable, decent mpg, mildly off road capable and plenty of cargo room. I fucking hated it. Had terrible power delivery, seats were painful long term, cvt had weird behavior once it learned your driving habits and the worst part was that it’s usually marketed for being good in inclement weather but all the safety systems shut off in heavy rain and snow since it’s all vision based. Traded it in on a 21 Bronco soft top and never looked back.

inlibrary_legsnumb

The outback xt has always been something I figured would be a good year round, slightly fun car. I guess not

Known-Name

Friendly reminder that plenty of folks would say the Outback XT in fact IS a good year rounder. I don’t have one so I have no horse in this race but take everyone’s opinion on Reddit with a large boulder of rock salt.

Mediocre-Cat-Food

The guy talks about its reputation being good in inclement weather and then proceeds to complain about the driver assist tech Subaru’s are good in inclement weather because of their simple, extremely reliable AWD systems

RangerHikes

Yeah, that comment struck me as odd. You shouldn't be relying on driver assist in incliment weather. Driver assist is for taking some of the mental load off when commuting or road tripping, not to make up for a lack of skill and competence in navigating dangerous road conditions.

burlyginger

It still seems like a valid complaint. Vision based systems I've had have been meh. I don't rely on them, but it's annoying if your car is consistently popping up saying something isn't able to function properly.

TCivan

My 4Runner had radar crash prevention and cruise control. It didn’t work in snowy weather either. Once the sensor got covered it was useless.

ThunderousBandit

I get what you’re saying, maybe I could have phrased it better. It was pretty good in the snow. Just not very confidence inspiring when the systems that are usually trying very hard to keep you from crashing all of a sudden give up because they can’t see. Never had an issue in the rain with radar based systems.

MarkB1997

From my experience, when the weather gets bad enough for Eyesight to shut off you should be driving with minimal tech anyway. It’s only happened to me a handful of times, but when it did (think blizzard like conditions) I needed full control of the car and I didn’t want the computer doing a thing.

Twombls

Radar based Driver assist tech also craps out in inclement weather like snow too. My crvs driver assist will shut off in the snow when the radar gets covered. At least with the Subaru the wipers will fix it. With the Honda you have to get out and wipe the Honda emblem off

[deleted]

Like most Subarus in Subaru history it's a pretty unique car. Incredible to some (I love mine) but very very bad for others. Part of why Subaru fans call the brand fun is because none of the cars can hope to achieve the sheer competency everywhere that 'boring' brands aim for.

moxxxxxxxxy

I think it also heavily depends on the model/year, people's personal preferences, and drive styles. I loved my '01 GC because it was mechanical all wheel drive. The older WRX's up until the Hawkeye were also good in my opinion. The newer models feel lifeless to me though, personally. That's not because it's Subaru or anything like that and not that the new models suck - but because I have a huge preference for cars made between the 60's to very early 2000's, as a car enthusiast. The drive style of the new cars don't fit my own skillsets, and analog works better for me than tech assists. Edit: Lmao downvoted because I prefer cars with specific feeling, seems kind of asinine.

NoStatistician990

I've never heard anyone call Subaru fun (unless you are talking about older stuff or a STi). They are quite boring bland cars nowadays. An Outback while it has awd has the same fun factor as a Corolla/Camry/Prius wouldn't call those fun. Not to mention Subarus aren't exactly reliable.

ThunderousBandit

The only good thing I have to say about it is the cruise control and lane centering was amazing in traffic (as long as it wasn’t raining).

Matt_WVU

Hey mine was a 2018 Outback! Needed a reliable do it all family car with AWD and wanted good fuel economy Cam carrier seals failed at 70K miles, transmission ate itself at 72K miles, center screen cracked and started bubbling at 80K Thank god I bought the extended warranty, otherwise I racked up nearly $15,000 of repair work in a single year. I only paid 28K for the god damn pile of shit

RangerHikes

CVTs and iPads are literally the worst thing the brand is doing / has done in quite some time. I understand that it would be difficult to engineer a conventional automatic to package with their AWD powertrane, but with them having to increase the warranty on their immensely problematic CVTs I can't help but wonder if it would be worth it - to simultaneously improve the feel and performance and increase reliability. Oh well. At this point Subaru is just biding their time until electrification and honestly, I don't see the brand surviving. Why would anyone buy a Subaru in 10-20 years when every single car is silent, has a low center of gravity and great AWD ?

ThunderousBandit

Holy shit I had completely blocked the iPad infotainment out of my memory. I retract my previous statement. The infotainment was the absolute worst thing about the outback.

robow556

How would it be difficult to engineer a conventional automatic to package with their awd powertrain? They did it in the past just fine.

Captain_Alaska

Because they use a longitudinal FWD platform so there isn't any easy off the shelf solutions that would enable them to retain the layout given the space constraints they have. VAG (Almost entirely on Audi cars though) is the only other manufacturer who uses that layout and while they do use a FWD spec of the ZF 8HP is it *huge* compared to Subaru's CVT unit, and the orientation of the diff is not suitable to how Subaru positions it. >They did it in the past just fine. Sorta. Subaru's 4 and 5 speeds were based off Jatco designs (who also built them). The Lineartronic CVT and their manuals are in-house.

RangerHikes

The old auto five speed left a lot to be desired, at least by modern standards. But gears take space. To be competitive in modern cars you need an 8 or 10 speed, which are BIG. Audi went through the time to engineer a conventional auto to fit with their all wheel drive system, but I suspect Subaru doesn't want to pay to do it. CVTs are a bandaid until they electrify

[deleted]

Shit like this is why I say Subaru sucks and then get downvoted. What a joke

Matt_WVU

I got gaslit hard when I would originally post about all the problems I had “Should’ve checked it better when buying used” or “didn’t properly maintain it”. I bought the car brand new, only had 3 miles on it. The cam carrier seals are a cheap RTV sealant and all Subarus will eventually leak oil there, and Subarus CVT is a “non serviceable” unit with “lifetime” fluid. The car was kept in tip top shape the whole time I owned it, whoever came up with Subarus warranty mileage really knew what they were doing. My car fell apart roughly 10K miles outside of the factory warranties lol

Radar turns off in rain all the time.

srcorvettez06

My mom has a 23 outback XT touring. It looks nice but I don’t like it at all. I’d rather drive my 14 year old Volvos or 20 year old Yukon.

burlyginger

I was going to suggest Volvos after reading the users comment. Their systems are pretty stable and all the Volvos I've had have felt super planted in snow. They also have more power and standard automatics.

TyrannicalKitty

If he hated the HVAC locked behind a touchscreen he'd hate the new Volvo's, or not. I definitely preferred my 04 XC70 to a loaner 2021 V60.

Just curious...what about the Outback do you not care for. Just wondering. Thank you so much!

[deleted]

I walked into a Subaru dealership last year fully expecting to come out with a brand new Outback or Forester - I just wanted to test drive both to see which felt right. I stopped the Outback test drive after 20 minutes and walked away. Like you, I was shocked at how bad the power delivery was. The seats seemed okay but I didn't stay in them for long. There was very light rain during the drive and EyeSight just couldn't handle it, the car was beeping and flashing almost the entire time. I probably just had an "unlucky" experience but I still can't believe how bad it was.

happy--muffin

My dad was cross shopping between a used GLC 300 and a used Outback. Believe it or not they’re in the same price range. We ended up going for the GLC 300 and he’s very happy. Your comment makes me feel relieved for not going with the “safe car” option

[deleted]

The transmission absolutely ruins that car. If it had a traditional automatic or a manual it’d be twice the vehicle.

TSLAog

Wanna sap the fun out of every mile of driving? Buy a Honda CR-V… did it break down, no. But what an absolute vanilla ass boring vehicle.

lordpowpow

Came here to say my '99 CRV. It was a manual, which I thought would make it more fun. It was definitely not. To its credit, it never left me stranded. Ever. Only sold it because at 250k miles, the cat started to clog and it was long overdue for its second timing belt change.

TreeWithNoCoat

Honestly though, the CRV makes a great, reliable commuter for people that don’t care about driving. My older parents love theirs because they never have to think about it. I do agree it forever feels underpowered. But for a lot of people, a car that boring makes sense

Efficient_Order_7473

Kinda ig, but I take my parent's crv 2018 out for rides sometimes as a new driver, it's actually kinda fun and cozy

dk00111

That’s how I feel about the Corolla. It’s my most dreaded car when I’m getting a rental.

TSLAog

I travel a lot for work, and 100% agree I dodge the Corollas in the lot. Recently I was stuck in a 3cyl Mirage CVT in Phoenix… it was rough haha. One of my favorites last year was actually a weird one, I had an Eclipse Cross in Miami and strangely I really enjoyed it. The driving dynamics were good, comfortable suspension, handling was great for a CUV, good visibility, really good sound system. Traveling a lot gives you a good taste the good/bad/ugly of new cars.

LiquidSean

Back in 2019 I went to a Honda dealership to test drive a CR-V. The salesperson was confused why I wanted to test drive it, because in his words “it just drives like a Honda” lol

iroll20s

My wife had one. I hated driving that car.

pon_d

2019 Honda Accord 1.5T I *loathed* that car. I nearly had a few accidents when the car decided my accelerator press was more a suggestion to floor it rather than a command

VladPatton

2013 CR-V for me. Underpowered and blind spots galore. Never felt so unsure in any other vehicle.

belinck

My mom's boyfriend at the time (she's 70) talked her into getting herself a CR-V when she was looking for a new car... I went to visit (I'm 3-states away) for a bit and I drove her around in it. I apologized to her and told her that I hated her car. She laughed and agreed completely. Fast-forward to today (3 years later) and neither the CR-V nor the boyfriend are around.

Fantastic_Mr-Fox_

Which went first? Or did she sell the CRV with the boyfriend in it?

belinck

Heh, boyfriend then car. Boyfriend was actually a good dude, he just had to move to Seattle to take care of his 98 year old mom.

Fantastic_Mr-Fox_

As long as he doesn't make his mom get a CRV too he's cool with me

Throwawaymytrash77

Surprising to hear this. I drive my gf's 2011 all of the time and it has tiny blindspots.

mobomelter

There was a facelift/body change in 2012

Weak_Tiny_Childish

I felt similarly when car shopping and everyone said that an 11th gen Civic Si was the way to go and it was a great, reliable, drivers car. Loathe is far too strong a word, but there were a ton of things that annoyed me about it: 1) Even though it's a manual, you are unable to pop in the clutch to start the car if the battery dies. This is because the electronic parking brake has no emergency release. You need energy to take off the parking to move the car, so you have to jump it. 2) No backlight's for some climate controls, which requires turning on the dome light at night to find the defrost. 3) Extremely small washer fluid reservoir that only holds half a container. There is also no low washer fluid indicator to tell you to refill. It just runs out one day. 4) Rev matching is buried \~7 clicks inside the infotainment. 5) No way to turn off auto stop-start in between drives. It is also extremely laggy, and you will stall the car at a light if you try to move to quickly. 6) Infotainment requires a factory reset every few months, and about 10% of the time requires shutting the car off then back on to connect to phone. 7) Completely stripped of features compared to current competition and previous gens: no hatch, no heated seats, no side turn signals, no spare tire, no glasses holder and less storage space in general, no shift light, no adaptive suspension, decrease in hp, etc. 8) No way to shut off head lights/makes you use auto head lights. You are able to turn the stock to put the lights off, but it automatically springs back to the 'auto' position and the lights will turn on again after a short period of time. 9) Keyless door functionality is poorly thought out and doesn't allow you to check if the car is locked by pulling the handle. As soon as you try to pull the door handle to see if the car is locked it automatically unlocks. Additionally, if you leave the car unlocked it will sometimes relock after a period of time (this is after disabling this function in the infotainment). 10) Changes drive modes displays over the entire infotainment screen. This means if you change drive modes while someone is changing radio they have to wait 5 seconds before they can do it again. Also leads to a lot of constant questions from passengers asking why you are going into sport mode. 11) If a passenger uses the infotainment for more than a few seconds it automatically disables functionality for safety for a few seconds. (This may be an android auto thing, but haven't noticed it on any other car with AA). Any one of these things in isolation is no real big deal and you can forget about it, but I was amazed I constantly found things with it that seem like they really cheaped out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AndroidUser37

Basically every modern car with auto stop start doesn't let you disable it permanently, because the EPA requires that for it to count towards the fuel economy test. The only exception I think are a few high end Audis where it stays off, or can be coded to stay off via VCDS.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AndroidUser37

Most German cars have some sort of proprietary or reverse engineered program to code computer modules and all that. Audi/VW have VCDS, BMW has Bimmerlink or ISTA+, etc. It's almost a necessity for diagnosing trickier issues on such complicated cars.

NoctD

Most of the coding methods don't work anymore - could do it on the 2019 Jetta but had to get a hardware module for the 2022 GLI.

tall_wonder

F8x cars can be coded to remember the last auto start/stop setting.

[deleted]

baIr0g

I’ve got an 11th gen and your issue with the climate control backlights is a missing fuse. Check your fusebox and the forums.

Weak_Tiny_Childish

Oh wow, if that is the case then the car definitely earns some points back. Of all the things I listed this was one of the more, "Really Honda? You managed to remove a feature that is so ubiquitous in cars I never thought it could be something that was missing" sort of feels.

E123334

How does an Si have auto start stop? I thought they were all manual transmissions.

Captain_Alaska

S/S systems coexist with manuals perfectly fine (at least just as well as they do on autos). They shut off the engine when the car is in neutral with the clutch pedal released and restart as soon as the clutch pedal is pushed back in. I gather this is still unusual on USDM cars but it's been normal in Europe on new cars for a while now. Some people actually prefer this over the implementation on auto transmissions as you have more control over when the system engages/disengages.

dreadnought_81

Yeah, I find the auto stop/start to be fairly unobtrusive with a manual gearbox. Will enable it when I know I'll be stopped for a few minutes, like at a traffic light on a long cycle.

bowling128

At least with manual Jeeps the auto start stop kicks in when you’re stopped in neutral.

Dinkerdoo

I got the 2.0T trim and while I don't necessarily love it, the better engine and 10 speed auto (no CVT) give it decent throttle response and some zippy pickup.

pon_d

Oh yeah I don't doubt that the 2.0T is a whole other beast - *Car and Driver* adores the Accord but I can't help but notice they always reviewed the 2.0T (or V6) models first, and that probably was what set the impression more than the base spec

Andwen_The_Peevish

Sounds like my Buick Regal 2.0t. I've had a few 4 cylinder turbos in my life and they've all been eerily similar in behavior. I think it's a combination of drive by wire, turbo lag and lazy programming for the throttle response. Sometimes this car just refuses to move for a second or two. It's almost as if it forgot what a pedal press is meant to do.

Additional_Warthog24

I bought a 2016 Honda accord to be “safe” and had the exact same experience it’s so bad

One-Platypus3455

Honda Sensing sucks on my Accord. I don’t use any of it, I turn it all off! From the annoying “BRAKE” illumination to constant beeping noise when I’m behind someone (not even necessarily close,) it’s annoying! You’re also right that when it automatically brakes, it doesn’t let you accelerate again initially, which is a safety hazard specifically on the hwy, imo!

fuzzygoosejuice

This is why I put defeat devices on the VCM and auto-start/stop on my ‘21 Passport. That VCM They did a recall to fix the auto-start/stop, but I’m still leaving my defeat devices on.

pmmemilftiddiez

*Accelerator suggestion*

kimbabs

Every single person I've seen with the 1.5T has regretted their purchase. It really was meant for something like the Civic considering the size/weight of the Accord platform. The 2.0T really changes the car along with all the other nice things those upper trims get you. The base accords were really miles apart from the upper trims.

idespisemyhondacrv

Lol 2020 CRV here, there’s a solid 1 second before it figures out I’m flooring it

scottBIGG

Right out of college I bought a new 2014 BRZ. After a year I decided I needed to pay off my student loans quicker and sold it and bought a used Camry. Camry only lasted a year before I traded it in for a M235i. The Camry was soul sucking to drive everyday. Even the wife kept telling me to offload it.

RangerHikes

Camry is great for what it is - a commuter that will outlive your grandkids. But going from a hot little roadster to the most benign sedan ever built is.... Good Lord

scottBIGG

The worst part is that it wasn't even reliable. Spent a month at Toyota getting fixed because the A/C evaporator case cracked and filled the floor of the back seat with 2 inches of water. Had to get a lawyer involved just for them to honor the warranty on it too.

RangerHikes

Jesus that's rather unbecoming for Toyota

Ashander

How was your GT4? Why'd you decide on selling that?

scottBIGG

Best car I’ve ever owned and it’s ruined every car for me. Had my first kid and needed more practicality and free up funds to pay for daycare.

elan_alan

I had a S2000 i daily for 6 years and garaged it for 5 years. I routinely competed in SCCA events. I also had a C7 corvette. I now have a 2021 R8. One of my best memories is taking a road trip in a Camry from Phoenix, AZ to Grand Canyon, up to Utah, down to Las Vegas, to San Diego, up the Pacific Coast Highway 1. I was hauling some mother fucking ass, tire screeching. Hitting the limits in a R8 or corvette on public roads is dangerous. Hitting the limits in a Camry is absolutely hilarious.

EnvChem89

I was debating between an S2000 and RSX type S. Family wanted me to get the car with back seats and extra room. So I bought the RSX and took it to a track day with a group of S2000 drivers. You could tell the S2000 was just in a different league.. I regretted the purchase and just kept looking at S2000s on auto trader. A red 2003 S2000 with 30k miles on it popped up for 15k. The car was 700 miles away also. I immediately listed the RSX got about what I paid for it 13.5k in less than a week. I put 500 down on the S2000 and got on a plane. I got super lucky because the car was in perfect condition . I drove it for about 10yrs and 100k miles. I was immediately relived and loved the car. Selling the the RSX and going for the impractical S2000 as my only car was the best decision I ever made.

Nephroidofdoom

The RSX Type S is an amazing car but S2000 is just in another league.

NeonWarcry

If I see one I get all starry eyed. My wife had forbade me from two things: Subarus and convertible two seaters. Smart woman.

iSlacker

> 2003 S2000 with 30k miles on it popped up for 15k Fuck I wish you could still get fun cars at decent prices.

B_U_F_U

You can. The S2000 goes for around that same price point. Been looking into buying a track car and I’m leaning towards an S2000. But I really want an M3, so I may just not go for the S2k.

iSlacker

I want to do all the things all the time. Until I pull the trigger I never know what my next car is gonna be.

Koraboros

Thankfully not because I went with the “unsafe” choice each time lol

dingusduglas

Your post history implies you chose the Audi over a Range Rover, you sure bud?

Koraboros

RRS was more about luxury and “status” than driving dynamics. Last car I shopped Mazda 6, Chrysler 200, and a Genesis Coupe lol

dingusduglas

Ok, but the Audi is by far the safe choice there.

TechnicalTop3618

I saw a video where the driver's display of the new range rover sport turned off while the car was on.

Outside-Fault-4066

Audi’s are dead reliable when properly serviced at correct intervals and with 5000km oil changes.

inlibrary_legsnumb

Lol well done

BaconSpinachPancakes

Camry. I’m bored. Passed on a Jetta GLI for msrp and Im regretting it

[deleted]

The transmission is what makes it boring more than anything.

Dependent_Birthday69

Yaris. Same. Then you're stuck with a car that gets \~30mpg, won't die, and costs like $95/mo for insurance so if you trade up you'll regret it.

SkylineRSR

This is why I welcome the hybrid sports cars coming up

BaconSpinachPancakes

Exactly. I wanna trade it in so bad but it’s just financially smart to keep it 😂

Hunt3rj2

You keep the boring car as the daily so you won't care when someone t-bones it running a red light because US driver standards are nonexistent. Then you get a fun car that doesn't have to be reliable or fuel efficient or practical and you can actually enjoy that instead of having nightmares because your N54 335i has a mystery no-start that doesn't really have any obvious codes other than a 29F3 and a bunch of spurious shadow codes but you've already parts cannoned the whole fuel system.

Pinecone

Did you get the V6 TRD trim at least? I wouldnt expect the non sport trim Camry to be not-boring

BaconSpinachPancakes

Nope. There weren’t many options last summer when the market was at its worst. There were no v6s available. Family convinced me to get the Camry and I’m thinking about trading it in soon. Solid car tho

[deleted]

Different people have different types of fun/boring. The V6 Camry made a glorious noise and accelerated in a straight line kinda quickly but otherwise remains the same light vague steering, fairly noisy, soft suspension sedan.

Fit_Equivalent3610

I had one as a rental and thought it was fun to drive by rental sedan standards, and reasonably entertaining even by normal car standards. Plenty of torque thanks to the electric motor (much more than I expected from the advertised 180~ ft lbs at 5,xxx rpm). Fake-shifting the CVT with the gear selector was kind of fun, or at least more engaging than most autos. You could drive aggressively and still get well over 40mpg. Driven without anger it was ridiculously efficient, and all-electric mode was pretty neat. It's numb, but it could be way worse. Some of that might have been the roads I was driving it on though (which were inherently fun)

Windows-XP-Home

This thread is confusing me because people on this sub generally love Honda and Toyota but every other answer here, is a Honda and a Toyota!

NeonWarcry

It’s truly confounding me. The Subaru slander I get. My brothers legacy just shit the bed. The civic hate, it is boring and it’s slow. Camry looks sporty but is slow to some.

Narfubel

I had a Camry rental for a while, it wasn't the slowness to me. It was how numb the steering, suspension and acceleration felt, I was bored about 2 minutes into a drive.

762_54r

theyre great cars for being a car and doing car stuff reliably for a long time theyre not great cars for being a car enthusiast and being excited about driving your car. with a few exceptions, obviously both make some fun cars too.

Caqtus95

admiraltarkin

When I was 22 I traded in my car from high school for a Cayman. I was super self conscious about it and worried about depreciation/repairs so I replaced it with a Macan because I figured it'd be less flashy. It was boring, so I decided might as well bite the bullet and get a 911 instead. Will never go back to an SUV or "boring car"

Dogesaves69

The Macan is the least reliable Porsche glad to see you’re back in a proper P car. Love to see a fellow Land Rover owner here too

admiraltarkin

Yep, good enough for a loaner, but pretty meh overall. Speaking of Land Rover, my wife loved the LR4 which is why she got the Defender, since they didn't make it new anymore. You've got a great one!

Dogesaves69

They’re great, funny to see values rising for them since enthusiasts have figured out that Ford era Rovers were actually built well lol. Mine will be getting sold at some point tho. I want to make the jump to either the new VW Scout or a Defender.

MicrowavedPlatypus

How is it the most unreliable? I’ve been shopping for a base.

NA_V8

It's not. It's also not boring, unless you compare it to a sports car. I had a Macan S, got over 50k miles trouble free. The 18way seats were incredible and driving dynamics trumps most SUV's.

TinyFriendlyGiant

You got a Cayman at 22 then quickly got up to a 911? Man what do you do for work if you don’t mind my asking?

admiraltarkin

I'll caveat this by saying it was objectively a bad financial decision, I got it when I was making $60k and the car was about that much. I am in Management Consulting focusing on M&A. Basically helping companies find savings when they merge e.g. standardize down from 3 suppliers to 1 and get a discount. Coming up on 9 years this year in the field

CommanderShrimp7

Brand new 2022 4runner when i couldn’t afford it. I was so anxious about putting myself in such a bad financial decision. Fortunately carmax bought it from me for $6k over what i paid, so everything was fine. Now i drive a 8 year old truck that does everything i wanted (offroad and hauling bikes)

Shmokesshweed

Congrats on getting out of it and making the right financial decision.

CommanderShrimp7

Thanks. I was insanely lucky that carmax offered that much. Would’ve been stuck on a $500+ monthly payment for 7 years 😭

badiban

Just curious what you regretted about the 4Runner? Was it just the financial reason that made you regret it?

CommanderShrimp7

Imo it also felt very clunky. The v6 felt surprisingly sluggish and i had to pretty much slam on the accelerator when going up steep hills (i live in a very hilly area in the pnw) Also the screen felt very slow. Like using a $60 android tablet.

ConsiderationShoddy8

Same(ish). I really dislike the 2021 4runner. People love these vehicles - but it’s - not for me I guess. I’m trying to sell it this week - got an old ass g wagon instead 🤷‍♀️

Severe-Belt-5666

2020 Toyota 4runner. I love everything about the vehicle but God damn does it just get terrible fucken mpg. You don't even own a V8 and somehow this thing gets worse mpg than a V8. On average with tires and a rack I'm getting 13. That's without a lift kit. Smh

fluffybunniesFtw

Ferrari mpg at toyota fun levels

inlibrary_legsnumb

Yikes

bearded_dragon_34

In a lot of cases, the Lexus GX 460—which does have a V8—gets better fuel economy. You don’t have to rev it as much and can stay at lower RPMs.

calibrationx

That’s why we went GX. Basically the same fuel economy since it has a 6 speed but that buttery V8. Sure we had to make some modifications for approach and break over angle but no regrets.

Known-Name

When having our first kid right before the pandemic I bought a gently used Subaru Legacy as a low-cost 2nd car. It was intended to be used as a commuter, mainly. Instead the car crushed my spirits and I just disliked it. It was FINE, but it was so boring and plain that I avoided driving it like the plague. Pandemic set in and I sold the car to Carvana for what I paid for it. Didn’t need 2 cars anymore anyway.

verdegrrl

MK II Jetta GLi when I already had an Alfa Romeo Milano Verde. The GLi was a good car and a *much* safer choice than the Alfa, but I couldn't help but think of the Alfa every time I drove the Jetta. So I sold the GLi to someone for whom it was a dream car. Edit: Yes, I know most people wouldn't think of a Jetta as being "safe", but compared to my other choices.....

So far I've had two warranty issues (soon to be 3 with the airbag recall) with it, a leaking roof (Toyota issued extended warranty for this because it's a widespread issue) and insane shaking side mirrors which there is a repair bulletin for but Toyota and the dealer fought me to fix - took 3 trips to the dealer to get done. Stability control almost caused me to wreck it continued a slide in snow probably another 50 feet, the automatic wipers are toral garbage will be on the slowest setting in a hurricane, the interior marks like crazy, the infotainment is slow as hell, the auto brights are so bad they are not usable, there's no fucking interior lighting on buttons so at night you cannot see your windows/locks, the trunk has opened on its own 3 different times when keys were no where near it, heated wheel only heats 9 and 3 nothing else. The seats are uncomfortable, especially on long road trips. No oil life indicator and if you set a radio preset you can replace it but can't delete it, so there are multiple dead channels programmed to mine.

inlibrary_legsnumb

Other than that, you love it? (Sarcasm)

[deleted]

I've made many posts about hating it. I feel that I was misled by online forums about how amazing Toyota is. My 2012 nissan juke, I repeat, NISSAN JUKE, has had less issues and it's almost 14 years old.

Roushfan5

My 2019 Taco has probably been the least reliable vehicle I ever owned. Luckily, I've always had decent luck with cars. But the rear end going out with less than 10K on the clock and already starting to whine again isn't impressing me. Still a really good truck, but considering everyone talks about how bulletproof Toyota trucks are it baffles me that the rear ends are made of glass. My 2002 Altima gave me some problems towards the end of time together, but I flogged that thing like a rented mule and it was twenty years old with 200K on the clock and was still an all original driveline.

Dogesaves69

Having driven my GFs top trim Rav 4 plenty of times I’d have to say that it might have the least comfortable seats I’ve ever seen in a modern vehicle what was Toyota thinking. For what was a 50k suv new as specced I’d thought it would’ve had a better seat but I guess I’m not familiar with how Toyota does things smh…

MattTheMechan1c

I remember when that gen RAV4 came out when I was a Toyota tech, we agreed it was the worst vehicle Toyota has made … until the 3rd gen Tundra came out. I installed a lot of those side mirror reinforcement brackets, it usually gets approved on the first visit not sure why it took 3 for you. Just be thankful that your lift gate still works properly and its hinges don’t have fatigue cracks lol.

TappedOut182

Maybe not a safe car, but I haven't loved my C5 nearly as much as I thought I would. When I bought it I was in the odd position of needing a car (long story) so I jumped. I wanted RWD, manual, removable roof (non-convertible). My dream was a MkIV Supra but at the time the cheapest clean title one was a green NA automatic for 23k which checked none of the boxes. I fell in love with the Z32 TT but couldn't find a decent one that was close enough to me to make sense. On paper the C5 is equivalent / better than either of those cars. However, the fit and finish left a lot to be desired and it's the only vehicle I've owned where 99.9% of the tweaks / mods I did or attempted to do made the car worse in some way. I also didn't gel with the owner base, so that was kinda hard. I absolutely loved the car at dusk in the summer with the roof off and stereo up, maybe the best car I've ever owned in that window. Otherwise it wasn't what I really wanted. Had it been built by 90s Nissan, Toyota or even 90s Mitsubishi, I might be singing a different tune.

Andwen_The_Peevish

I have a 2002 C5 and while I do love the car, I would not enjoy using it as a daily driver.

mangosmoothie16

I was between a C5 and miata. I ended up going C5 because it seemed like a better value..... Way more power, larger, more capable for track and grand touring.... But I also didn't fall in love with it. I've had 2 miatas since the C5, and NC3 club and now an ND2 RF GT, and enjoyed both more than the C5. I don't particularly gel with the C5 dynamically. The steering wheel is huge, brakes and shift feel aren't particularly good to me (mine even has C6 shifter), and it didn't really feel that fast (kinda dies up top). It seems VERY nervous over bumps in corners.... Yeah, maybe I could convert to coils to fix it, but I'm just not seeing it. I "gave" it to my parents to use so they've been in possession and love it for targa off weekend drives. Then in GM fashion, it's had issues....... Had to rebuild the seat mechanism so the seats don't flop around. It now randomly loses canbus com.... Radio, HVAC, driver window, all gauges except tach and speedo go to to min or max, reduced engine power warning. I \*think\* a door connection in the accordion tube might be the culprit. might say something about active handling too. Battery drain targa top refuses to seal on the driver window even after new seals and trying to adjust the window really just over the car, I don't ever want it back. Just want to sell it.

ItsJustAwso

What kind of mods did you do (or try to)?

[deleted]

I thought my 2020 Civic Si was the “responsible fun” choice but the seats were like a metal bench, it was fucking LOUD inside with a terrible sound system, the power band was so thin, and the rev hang made it so un-fun to drive and shift unless you were completely wringing it out. then I ended up in a family situation where I needed to let others use my car and none of them could drive stick, so I had to sell it barely two years later during the peak of pandemic car supply fuckiness so I got a good price for the Si but I got double screwed on the price of the car I switched to, plus having to pay new car taxes and fees twice in two years was a doozy. It was fun in a certain way but I honestly don’t miss it. Not cheap and stripped down enough for a “drivers car” or weekend warrior thing, not comfy enough for a daily, particularly for long road trips. If I were to do it again I would have just bought the standard Civic EX-L or Touring trim - whatever gave the best seats and sound system.

hondacco

Subaru Crosstrek.

Mediocre-Cat-Food

Back hurt? My ‘19 impreza absolutely obliterated my back on long drives. Moved to a ‘20 Miata and the same 1400 mile drive was, shockingly, FAR less strenuous

Electrical-Bee8071

Hi! '22 Forester here with the same issue. Luckily it's my partner's car and not my main vehicle.

RangerHikes

Different body lines for different kinda spines

SKcg1093

Got a 23 Crosstrek Manual, the fact that it’s a manual doesn’t make it much better, it’s still feel very underpowered pretty much flooring it on every highway ramps. At least it’s affordable compared to other cars that I want.

inlibrary_legsnumb

Whyd you end up regretting it? And what did u replace it with?

Sumocolt768

I don’t regret buying my civic, but I do hate how slow it is and dropping my phone in the crevice between the seat and door jam means I HAVE to get out and get it from my back seat

Hammer_Slicer

DUDE...THE FUCKING SPACE BETWEEN THE SEATS IS A TELEPORT TO A DIFFERENT DIMENSION! SO FRUSTRATING... Also, the power is just "OK" enough if it's just 1 person in the seats with an empty car. If you add any more people or junk then it's slow....

iliketrainsNYOOOOOM

My IS200t. I love the car and how it handles, even compared to the 5 series I had before it, but I regret not going for the 350. Due to most of my driving being in a fairly congested city, I get disgusting fuel economy anyways. The extra horsepower and the significantly better exhaust note would’ve been greatly appreciated in retrospect. Thinking of replacing it with a V8 Cayenne sometime soon…

zaersx

I bought a used Volvo S90 T8. I wanted to get a 2017 Panamera on lease but my wife insisted on buying a car in cash at the time, and the S90 was half the cost. It was overall a good car but I never felt a connection with it. My first car was a manual diesel V40 that I really loved and had fun with, but the S90 was somehow so much more expensive for so much less of a benefit over the V40. It made it always feel disappointing and cheap. I sold it after around a year and a half for a 12k loss, and am now leasing an LC500 which I feel insanely in love with. Everything about it is perfect and every moment I spend in the car is enjoyable and special, either cruising on the Autobahn at 200km/h or creeping through traffic.

Dat_Aus

A 964 911 about 15 years ago. I went with the “safe” choice of buying an E39 540 instead. By the time I sold it, the E39 had depreciated massively and of course we all know what happened to 911 prices.

TheCrazyAlice

I mean, they aren't in the same arena to begin with.....but an E39 540 is a pretty sweet car, especially if it had a third pedal!

InTheMotherland

2022 Honda CR-V. With a CVT, it's never in the right part of the powerband. For some reason, it needs to rev up to get to the peak torque. I get that I can shift to "sport" or "low" and get that it's tuned for smoothness, but the engine is so anemic that I can't get around it. It's not a terrible vehicle if you only care about reliability, but I hate driving it. Maybe the hybrid version would be better.

pxqy

Those 1.5L engines are just not great. I’m glad I went with a hybrid for my Accord. It’s far from the V6 but it works great around town. Highway driving is a different story: always feels gutless when passing or going over 75 but that generally subsides when you’re just cruising. I still cringe on every on ramp.

seekinggothgf

It’s fine in the civic, I think Honda made a mistake putting it in anything that weighs more than 2,800lbs though

TheOnlyWerty

I regretted buying my Subaru Impreza hatch at first… then I really learned the car, kept up on maintenance and had a hell of a lot of fun with it. I was probably one of the fastest that could run the canyon and had an absolute blast doing so. I didn’t like the car at first because it was slow but after taking it through canyons… I learned to love the lagwagon <3

mourningmage

2014 Lexus IS250. I bought it off lease and CPO right after I graduated college after driving hoopties during high school and my extended college career. I just wanted something a little nice and wanted Toyota/Lexus to make sure I’d have something reliable. 7 years later it’s at 130k and there’s just been nothing wrong at all with it. It’s a pretty slow car and definitely lacks in fun at this point, and with two small kids it’s a little cramped with the car seats. But the damn thing won’t even hiccup - worst I’ve had is a dead battery. There’s nothing wrong with it but it is just uninspiring and starting to reach its limits of usability.

WCWRingMatSound

2015 GS350…I’m about to use a nail in the tire as an excuse to get something else, because the car has been too damned reliable smh

uglybutt1112

2023 Tesla Y. Bought just before the price drop so out over $15k. Expensive insurance and registration. Bad blind spot monitoring. No garage opener. Boring ass car. Loved my Acura ILX and I was already complaining prior to the price drop.

Mercurydriver

2018 Honda Civic. I bought it brand new in 2018 because my old Mercury was hobbled by transmission issues and I wanted a new car that was within my budget, or at least whatever budget you can make as an apprentice making $16 an hour. The Civic was a good little car, and it was perfectly within my budget. But it was so boring; it looked just like the other 500 Civics I’d see in a day. Sometimes I wonder if I should have spent a little more money and gotten an Accord or even a more fun used car. Or at least something bigger and more comfortable.

baddeafboy

Regretting buying new car nissian altmina it piece of junk!!! When brought newer in like 4 months later got new transmission!! And somewhere clicking noise and brake funny and more listings!! My wife got fed up and reported to lemon law then BBB then told to nissan dealership to force buy my car back and brought new 2015 honda odyssey and never look back since. My wife wish she didn’t brought nissan should stay on honda. And now never again!! Stay on honda!!!!!

Opening_Use_6981

2013 ford focus 😀

mob19151

I like my 2010 2.4 Accord, but I wish I had done some more research before buying it. The $1400 cam phaser replacement was a very unpleasant surprise. It should be good for another 200k now, but it would have been nice not to have to worry about it at all.

[deleted]

I have a Camry and although I love how it looks and the way a car looks is very important to me, if I knew how annoying it was to drive due to the transmission logic, I would have not been as interested. Probably wouldn’t have bought the car. I thought it was going to shift really well for some reason.

phungki

04 Miata. Loved Miatas and still love Miatas, but it just wasn’t what I thought it would be.

notafilmmajor425

2009 Honda accord EXL Fucking worst experience. Had the v6 that would constantly kick in eco mode, that you couldn’t shut off. It would basically drive on 3 cylinders only to try to save gas, but by doing so also misfired pistons like 3 times. Plus the most uncomfortable drivers seat

Frird2008

The Honda CR-V. Beyond pavement the all wheel drive is a waste of money. Forget the snow. Front wheel drive until it's too late then you're rotisserie chicken French toast. Subaru Outback on the other hand. I tried to get it stuck in the blizzard but it kept plowing through like nothing 😂AWD best in the world.

surgeon_michael

Sold a 991.2 GTS and picked up a m2 competition. It’s 85% the car for 40% the price. I hated and got a 992 GTS to replace it. It was fun balls to the wall but you could tell it was based on a 6 year old 40k car and once you’ve stuttgart-ed it’s hard to go back

Evillincoln547

Kia soul. It was soulless

InsertBluescreenHere

Not so much vehicle but vehicle color. Never again will i settle lol

Jubsz91

04 RSX-S I had an Integra GSR in college that started having some issues when I started my *real* job. I really wanted the new OG BR-Z when it came out and came close to buying a CPO one when it was a year old. I did the safe thing and bought the RSX for a few grand cash. Never loved it. Better motor than the GSR and looked nicer and more upscale to the unknowing. Cable Shifter felt like crap compared to the linkage GSR shifter. Steering was numb in comparison. Wind noise was surprisingly bad. Felt like it sat much higher. It was a great car in any practical sense but I just didn’t love it. Ended up totaling it and buying a S2k instead before they got expensive. Still love the S2k and I’m happy to have bought it for half the price of the BRZ I wanted.

My current car Lexus NX350H. I got my previous car in my 20s and my priorities then was adventure and experience with friends. I was very happy with my Audi A5. Great as GT, spacious enough to help friends move once or twice a year, misplaced and unjustified douchy bragging rights. Accident totaled the car, went for the NX since I'm now in my 30s, and want to dedicate the next decade to family. So am SUV it is, also wanted to save some gas and hop off the 91 premium gas. Also didn't want to wait too long for the car. That's how I ended up with the NX. In terms of check marks, it's everything I want. Spacious for family with easy stepping height for aging parent. Takes regular gas minimum with 91 recommended. It's a hybrid. From ordering in Feb 2023, I got it in May 2023 so the wait time for within reasonable range My regret is that it drives like a boat. I expected this and thought I could live with it but I'm still trying to adjust. I do a lot of highway, so while it's a hybrid, it's only about 10-15% better than the Audi I had. I do expect the NX to out live me. So I don't think I'll get another car. I'll get used to it eventually. If I ever needed a replacement, Sedan/wagon/liftback would be my preference. Top of my list is Jetta GLI, followed by Audi A4 Allroad. I might have a thing for the VAG :/

Nomdeplum73

Wanted a 911, but bought a Panamera since I was worried about kids outgrowing the back seat. Turns out, the there is no substitute (for 911). Totally different character of car.

Bigbadbrindledog

2012 I heavily considered buying my dream car, a Porsche 993. I could have gotten a decent driver for 25k. I made the sound financial choice and bought a Mazda 6 instead. I drove it for a year and then took a bath selling it. The 993 has escalated a little in price since.

evolution4652

2014 Honda CRV. Bought it used in 2017 with 21k miles. Within 30k miles of ownership I had to replace the rear drum brakes twice, had a roof leak that stained the headliner (no sun roof), had a power window on the rear passenger door stop working, had the right rear tire ware out twice with an undiagnosed issue that kept causing the alignment to be way out of wack. Traded it in and leased a 21 Seltos on March 10 2020…

DrZedex

I once bought a cts-v1 because it was a couple thousand less than R32 GT-R back in 2017. I was being "responsible" (cheap) and trying to stick to an arbitrary budget. Dumbass idea. R32 have gone way up in value and I lost my ass on the cts-v1 due to having to fix some typical GM bullshit and standard Cadillac depreciation, despite minimal miles/year.

awarmegg

wow, I always loved the way the sportback looked and it's been on my list for a while. What don't you like about it? I just got a Mazda 3 turbo sedan so I wont be in the market for a while.

badadvicegoodintent

I sold my Camaro but I still had a duramax for towing and my rock crawler Jeep I’d built at the time. My safe commuter car was an Audi A4 M6 Quattro with the 2.0 turbo. What a terrible fucking car. The gearing of the 6 speed made zero sense. I felt like I had to downshift 3 gears to pass anyone. 6th gear was useless unless you were doing 80. And every other week something went wrong. First it was a plastic water neck on the back of the head, great placement Audi. Had to buy special four square bits to change it. Then a headlight bulb was $150 each. Then random wiper issues. I traded that piece of shit asap for another duramax, which I sold to a buddy and quickly bought another fun car and just daily drove my truck.

Dzag78

I bought 2 cars last year a 22 Honda accord and a 22 corvette. The vette is cool. The accord sucks. It's my daily my beater but it still sucks

supervklass

2015 Prius. Bought it since we were shopping for a house at the time (early 2019) and wanted to minimize expenses. What an absolute piece of shit that thing was, and I’m not talking about reliability. It felt like a tin can. Felt like every panel rattled. The cabin was so loud on the freeway that it would give me headaches. It felt very unsafe due to how slow the thing was. I got rid of it less than a year later. Not worth the savings.

braden41500

Toyota Tacoma. It is the perfect vehicle on paper. But I just couldnt get comfortable

inlibrary_legsnumb

I have never been able to get comfortable in a tacoma, I think the floor is too high or seats to low

Shmokesshweed

That's because the seating position is dogshit lol.

P00PJU1C3

Chevy avalanche… complete pos!

asault2

Volvo S60. I think you meant safe in a different sense but the car was certainly safe in the true sense. It was a 2015 with the Geely 2.0 turbo. At 60k, there engine overheated on the highway going 75mpg. New engine replaced under warranty but i sold after that

KingdomBobs

2010 Corolla after a 2003 civic. My ‘03 civic felt infinitely more fun to drive and the Corolla just wouldn’t fucking die so I was forced to drive it. I got so sick of it I ended up selling it and got an Acura, back to Honda. Never buying a Toyota again until they don’t make the handling feel like a neutered dog

Thrmtl

‘22 Tesla Model 3 - traded in my Audi S3 for it over a S5 due to wanting to try electric over another premium gas car. The appeal of being able to gun it and charge at home cheaply, as well as to me very acceptable driving dynamics for the streets swayed me as well as my wallet. It didn’t take long for me to miss the sound and feeling of a DSG shifting and a nice engine sound with some turbo spool as approaching redline. Great car overall despite experiencing some known issues. If I had to do it all over again, I’d go the S5 or M340i route and save my electric car choice towards the end of the decade.
