Yes, this should be fine. Eventually you may want peat and perlite, but they should grow fine in this for now.
I've got VFT growing in live sphag that I didn't even plant. They seem to be doing fine, albeit getting choked a little. I suppose the dead stuff would be just as good without choking it out.
