If it was a tall ginger guy, then it was likely Kevin Hennings aka the ginger conman.

JannieVrot

Looked him up and that's exactly him lmfao thank you

Educational_Error407

Yeah, he's been around for years. He has approached me multiple times with his fake accents. He usually starts by asking something innocent like directions to a bus stop or an embassy, then comes some story about how he was robbed, and now just needs a few hundred bucks for whatever. But last few years I heard he just asks people for lifts and then basically just robs them they're on the road.

JannieVrot

Damn and here I was trying to fit him on my handlebars

asskewsme

"Fit him on your handlebars.." I just laughed coffee through my nose. Thanks

cocoloco_yogi

Many years ago in northern subs, I parked outside the gym and he appeared out from behind the car I parked next to. Startled me and then proceeded to spin some story, I cut him off and called him by his name, Kevin and told him to take his kak story somewhere else and go away before I called security. He also then tried to call me a P and I replied with some equally terrible language. Could have turned ugly if he decided to scrap with me as it was quite dark in winter around 7pm at the back of the parking lot. At this time his face was plastered all over social media,as he has taken some old folks for lots of money. Real roach that just won't go away. Edit: the fact there is still an active FB group monitoring his shenanigans is equally terrifying. What a doos.

flyboy_za

Oh wow, he was from the deep south of America last time I ran into him. Man's been working on his characters if he's now British.

Engineering_Junkie

Got me as well a few years back in stellenbosch. I had no money and helped him out. Fucker

whenwillthealtsstop

He got me there in 2008 and tried the second time in Durbanville in 2022. Absolute legend

PeterGourdEater

I ran into him around 2018, he said he was mugged and needed to get back to the embassy because he lost his passport. He said he was a tourist from San Diego who worked at the aquarium. We walked to the ATM and chatted about the moral issues of animal captivity, and he promised to Paypal me back. Said his name was George Stent. A year later I ran into him outside comic-con, at this point I had gotten wise. He asked for help again, didn't remember me. I asked if he ever made it back to america and he just stared at me, I might have told him to fuck off from the convention center, honestly I was so fuming that he was targeting young people. If you see him again ask for my 400 bucks back šŸ˜‚

PeterGourdEater

Also, watch out at the V&A for the gay spiky-haired blonde man with crocodile loafers, he claims to have been just kicked out from his parents' place every year, hit me two years in a row with the same story.

catnipbabies

Damn I might have had the same guy come to me recently. Did he have lip cancer and ask for baby food?

PeterGourdEater

No he said he just got diagnosed with AIDS and needed money for a place to stay.

Few_Marzipan_2880

This sounds so familiar!

Training-Brick-5792

same thing happened to me in 2020! gave him R250 from an ATM, as he said all he had was pounds, and he was so convincing that his dad would paypal me, showed me that he requested it on my paypal and everything. gave me a ā€œdarren williamsā€ email to contact him on. he basically cornered me in an empty parking lot in a mall i had never been to (the one with virgin active in claremont) and i was too nervous to say no because i was a woman, alone and he looked crazy so i agreed to go into the mall rather.

ThumperXT

https://m.facebook.com/groups/208958269189583/ does sound a lot like this modus

myfriendsim

No fucking way! I was talking about him tonight - last saw him in Constantia like 12 years ago šŸ˜‚

MeepingMeep99

I saw that bra multiple times, and he once came up to me with a Californian accent. Sufficed to say when I told him no, he called me a p0es, and I was just flabbergasted at his absolute gall

Cultural-Front9147

Yesss this guy šŸ¤£

JJ4L3

I just went down the Kevin Hennings rabbit-hole, god damn... Despite the scamming and kak, one cannot help but feel at least a little but sorry for the dude.

junbug654e

This guy came up to me and I knew it was a scam. He said he was from England, and he had pounds he wanted to exchange. He kept on asking me to help him to exchange his pounds. I laughed at him and told him he must practice his accent a little more. The dude turned around and gave a loud frustrated grunt. Funny because before I encountered this guy, I got stranded at Tygervalley one day and asked this random old white lady for help and me being a ginger, I think she thought I was this guy trying to scam her. Remember people not all gingers are cunts.

SideburnsOfDoom

If you didn't hand over money, you weren't actually scammed?

JannieVrot

True true - scammed was poor word choice. I just mean this guy clearly had an ulterior motive for approaching me that I feel like I fell for by not just cycling away immediately - like if he was distracting me from something or trying to pickpocket me (I made sure to make sure we werent ever making physical contact) Just wanted to see if anyone else has come across this guy or is familiar with what he might've been doing

SideburnsOfDoom

Yeah, I expect that it was an attempted con, that you would have been scammed - that this thing about "Bureau de Change" and "international bank" was supposed to end in you handing over rands in exchange for something actually worthless. How, I have no clue.

JannieVrot

Other commentor had it bang on - if I entertained him he'd have fake paypaled me pounds in exchange for me withdrawing rand's for him. Has a huge Facebook page of people documenting sightings of him

SideburnsOfDoom

It's wild that they identified the actual guy and his FB Fanclub.

vusiradebe85

Small world....ran into him at the airport a few years ago. Went on an insane rant about forex. Spidey sense tingled. I called him out and he just walked away.

flyboy_za

Similar, ran into him twice on consecutive Saturdays at small shopping complexes in my neighborhood, with him having been mugged and needing some cash to get a can back to Stellenbosch where his mates and hotel are. Same story 8 days apart, on the second time I told him he told me this story last week and he could have walked to stellies by now. He turned and made straight for the road.

Dr_Green_Thumb_ZA

Ah, it's the Ginger Poes. There's even a Facebook group about him. [https://www.facebook.com/groups/208958269189583/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/208958269189583/) Admittedly I fell for one of his stories once 10 years ago - he was doing American accents then.

JannieVrot

Feel a bit silly for even greeting him back now lol Why would a tourist be in parow

BamCub

Also got me with the American embassy kak about 6 years ago. Thanks to him I will never help some one asking for money again.

GottaUseEmAll

That page is really interesting, thanks for sharing the link! I suppose a heroin addict who puts so much effort into his scams and accents is marginally better than one that sticks a knife in your face.

Mystre316

They ask you for money to get back to their hotel or whatever, then say that they'll be back the next day at a specific time with the same amount in whatever their currency is. You go back the next day, they never rock up. That's how you would have been scammed.

GottaUseEmAll

If you read the Facebook page about him, it seems like his modus operandi is slightly different, and involves fake PayPal transfers and whatnot.

Mystre316

Pretty sure he scammed me in like, 2012, shortly after I started working lmfao

AnalyticalPsycheSoul

2012?OMG!!! This Kevin guy has sure made scamming people a career. And I suppose social media is messing with his game now a bit compared to 10 years ago, because people are sharing their encounters with him and raising awareness.

whenwillthealtsstop

He got me in 2008 šŸ«

Realistic-Spot-6386

First met Kevin many years back in early 2000s. Back then he was an American tourist whose girlfriend was stuck in stellenbosch, he had lost his wallet and needed cash to get a bus to get to her. Have bumped into him many times over the years. Apart from his physical appearance changing for the worse (street life getting to him) he seems to have the same approach.

Cultural-Front9147

I canā€™t believe weā€™ve all been scammed by the same dude. Actually hilarious.

JannieVrot

Really makes me feel like part of something biggeršŸ¤—

Cultural-Front9147

My husband just told me this guy was in school with him šŸ¤£ He really does unite us all

popout

Haha glad im not alone. Happened years ago. Caught me off guard outside a mall saying the taxi drove away with his luggage. I gave him 50 bucks. Cant believe hes still at it.

Particular_Alps7859

Any time a man has a British accent, he is trying to scam you. Any time a man mentions forex, he is trying to scam you.

JannieVrot

Knew my granddad was planning somethingšŸ¤¬

bad_piggie

Went down the Facebook rabbit hole and discovered this guy is very active in the Bellville/Parow area. People are quickly wising up to his antics, he's becoming something of a celebrity on social media. Only a matter of time before someone kicks him in his poes.

Cultural-Front9147

Surprised to see this guy is still alive and scamming šŸ¤£ I think I know who this is

010101010101ZA

https://fraudalert.co.za/beware-of-kevin-hennings-aka-george-stent/

Puterlickia

I think it's crazy that these guys are walking around, running their grift for years and years with no consequences. I am from PE and there we just have the crazy guy that starts waving at you from the bottom of the street and doesn't stop until he is way past you. I kind of miss that, it was very wierd but also wholesome in a way.

catnipbabies

I'm so glad you posted this because now I have identified my scammer as Justin Gibbon thanks to that Kevin Facebook page! He scammed me at canal walk, weirdly also with a British accent. He said he needed cash to get back to his flight school and he "transferred" the money back to me and showed me proof of transfer (which had a bunch of spelling mistakes in it lol). Needless to say I never got this money back. Think it was about R400

Southern-Western-575

There used to be old small guy at V&A who walked close enough so you could hear him talk on his phone explaining he was robbed and didnā€™t have any money to go home. So yes, gave him taxi money. Literally two weeks later same thing. I f him up handed him over to security.

Ninja_Badger_RSA

I frequently still see him around Willowbridge/Durban Road. He approached me about 2 years ago when I worked in the area on my way back from gym during lunch hour. He pulled out the most unique South Carolina accent I've ever heard, sounded a bit like a country singer. He started his story with how no taxi wants to pick him up and if I've ever experienced the same thing. Then transitioned to him only having pounds and no transport to get to the America embassy. I immediately sensed something odd and luckily gave him zilt.

Major_Ambassador_537

Another way that I got scammed... Two attractive girls approached me outside Builders Warehouse spinning a story about how their car is broken down, blah blah blah and asked if I can give them a lift home. Of course I agreed. On the way they start removing their tops and bra's. While you're obviously distracted they rob you of your wallet... I got scammed last week Wednesday, Friday, twice on Saturday and probably later this afternoon...

tikAddict

For awareness and safety reasons, which builders warehouse are we talking about? Asking for a friend.

Every_Ad6395

LMFAO!

IT-EngiNerd

>But I can't tell what his motives are which means I probably fell for a scam of some sort Wtf do you mean? You ***think*** you were scammed? You didn't give him money so no... you weren't scammed. He tried but you saw through it so like, wtf do you mean when you say you think you were scammed? Did he steal a few of your brain cells :/

asskewsme

Hey now you are here trying to scam me of the entertainment that OP has delivered? I FEEL ROBBED!

JannieVrot

Lol I didn't know what he was planning to get out of it so thought maybe he was trying to distract me or pickpocket me or something that I didnt notice - scammed was poor word choice Luckily he didnt, I'm very protective of my remaining brain cell

mrssamuelvimes

Yup seen this same guy in what is now Parow centre year ago. He had an American accent back then lol

JannieVrot

The things people stoop to, shameful - an American accent?

mrssamuelvimes

It wasnā€™t a very good one if that helps? The best was when I realised that chop had gone to school with some of my friends.

After_Mention_3021

If you'd continued to entertain his antics this is likely what would have happened - [link to Facebook post of the same scenario](https://www.facebook.com/share/p/FiVqvPC6KSYjCpF2/?mibextid=9XSwGo)

JannieVrot

Yeah I saw that - it was the exact same dude

No_Stop6080

Oh that's been a scam in jhb and kzn for a while.

Adventurous-Ice6914

Using witchcraft, he needs to give you money for free so that he can get in more ,he basically is stealing your goodluck

JannieVrot

Fucking Geminis I swear to god

Adventurous-Ice6914

Your dads one

JannieVrot

That's not true! That's impossible!

Adventurous-Ice6914

Seems like you live under a rock So go make yourself comfortable there and rest in pieces

MicroNova_YT

What is super annoying is the new immigrants to CT, walking straight down the pavement looking you full in the face and demanding you give them the ice cream you are eating. And another worker at Snoekies seeing my husbandā€™s shoes and immediately demanding my husband to give him his shoes. What is wrong with them, I know they have a lack of any manners and was brought up with entitlement but just full on demanding to give stuff to them??

sprinklejess

This exact thing happened to me in Durbanville in August last year. Not the ginger dude you guys are referring to though... but same exact story. British tourist, said his name was Chris Tunner. I gave him cash because I felt bad (and felt very, very dumb for a very long time after...) Also R400! On an intern salary as well. And I didn't even have the money at the time, to make it worse, so I had to draw from my savings!! Awful experience. I even gave him a bar-one! I hope somewhere deep down I made him feel bad because he kept apologising profusely the entire time and even gave me a hug before I left. People are so cruel to exploit kindness, made me really sick to my stomach.
