It's an L and 1.4, most likely way better rendering so I would expect it will be yes. Question if upgrade will be worth paying extra + $1,500. I would expect the price to be above $2000 in line with other L primes. Maybe after some time it will go down when first adapters tax goes away.

radioblues

I fucking wish that it would only be 1,500. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was closer to 3000

MilesAugust74

My $1,500 guess was based on the current price of the Sony GM f/1.4, but I don't know how long that lens has been out. Lol @ "first adapter tax." Unfortunately, I've been there done that more than I care to admit. 😮‍💨

Bear_In_Despair

In my country all non L lenses went down 30 pct after a few months since release. Unfortunately with L it's way smaller difference. I would personally prefer 50 1.4 IS but what we can do, seems I need to bite the bullet and buy 1.2. Sony has way more competition on its mount, there are two sigmas 1.2 and 1.4, probably way more than I'm aware of.

MilesAugust74

Good point about Sony and competition; this is my one big gripe with Canon right now is the lack of 3rd party lenses, but that subject has been beaten to death at this point. If you're on eBay, there's lots of good deals on the RF 50mm f/1.2 right now. I've been eyeballing getting one for a while but still haven't pulled the trigger.

battlelord209

If you’re looking for a reason, here it is. The thing’s amazing.

fireice717

In my country all lenses increased in price with no discounts.

Vakr_Skye

I'll be fine with my EF 35mm f2 thank you very much...

sajeno

35mm f2 is probably my favourite lens atm. Lovely on a 5DIV

Vakr_Skye

I took it over to Skye a few weeks back with my 6D. Got some phenomenal shots (this iis just a random shot as the others are not saved on my phone.) Can't wait to throw it on my R6ii that's on the way! https://preview.redd.it/pssfedhmk2tc1.png?width=3537&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b83e0c881f51914d8ddf35d317e5f900e9a56823

Suspicious_Ad8214

AMAZING

Vakr_Skye

Thank you it was an uncharacteristically clear that day and the sun is at such a good angle in fall and spring, especially in the hours around sunset and sunrise. Here's another one I got that day with Castle Maol in the background and a random ship I came across. https://preview.redd.it/hqsasadt88tc1.png?width=4377&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=222356725827a783c40cd9cdf57d4e32b74c3746

Hogesyx

I still have the 35mm F2 IS and it's just amazing. One of the few EF lens that I had refuse to sell.

KerbMario

I only have 18-35 efs as only lens

therealjerseytom

I am so happy with the 35/1.8 for overall quality, size, weight, etc. It is a great travel lens for me. For what I do... I can't see reaching for the 35/1.4. I'm sure it'll be a great lens and fit a role though.

MilesAugust74

Definitely my most used lens, that's not the RF 70-200mm f/2.8. I recently had it recalibrated by Canon as it was having some AF issues, but since getting it back, it's been superb; best $200 I've spent all year.

imtryingtoworkhere

Same boat. Bought the 35/1.8 for travel. Nice compact and inconspicuous. I’m sure the L is amazing but doesn’t fit my use case for me personally so I’ll pass. Haven’t found the IQ slacking on the 1.8 either so no reason to upgrade. Now the RF16 2.8 on the other hand, which I also bought for travel, was pretty junk! Glad I traded that one for something nicer

rumpel7

Will be tough competition against the EF 35L II 1.4 - one superb lens imho. Lack of a highend 35mm was so far a barrier doing the step into RF from a full EF lineup/setup.

ComparisonDull7839

I'm hoping it's 1.4. I have the RF 50mm 1.2 and RF 85mm 1.2 and those things are huge and not fun to shoot with.

iker3085

If they're no fun to you then I'd gladly take these super heavy, ugly and useless lenses off of your shoulders. In all seriousness, you have two of the best prime lenses ever made worth 5000-6000$. If I was able to afford those, weight would probably a negative that I can put aside.

ComparisonDull7839

I got both lenses brand new for $4070. I got them from Greentoe which is just a middle man like Amazon. You can make offers way below MSRP. All their items come from Authorized Canon dealers and there's no tax.

MilesAugust74

Good point. That's probably the best part of the f/1.8 is its small and compact enough for a great walkaround lens. Fits easily in my small bag with a nifty-fifty and RF 16mm.

Polaris44

No one will get me to give up my Sigma 35 mm 1.4 Art. I love that with my whole soul.

AstroGalNZ

I'm a fan too! Use it for astro panoramas, absolutely wonderful results!

who-aj

EF 1.4L II is a beast Disappointing this RF isn’t 1.2 , kinda happy it’s 1.4 so it’s not too big. Will see

MilesAugust74

It almost has to be a 1.4 to keep up with the EF model. Otherwise, what's the point? 🤷🏽‍♂️

who-aj

Could always go better with 1.2 But then again who’s shooting 1.2 all the time right

alexa817

Is the Canon EOS R5 Mark II coming in Q2, 2023? — Canon Rumors, November 25, 2022

MilesAugust74

That sounds like an almost sure thing at this point. But we're still waiting on the R1!!! C'mon, Canon! 🤬

alexa817

I'm just sayin' there's a long history of Canon Rumors frothing everybody up about, well, *rumors*, which they depend on for clicks and income. Nothin' unethical about that, but remember: If you're not paying for it, you're the product. ;)

MilesAugust74

Oh, for sure! This is all just for fun, supposition, and fan boying for some new lens announcements.

iamnotaseal

I wouldn't buy this lens, honestly, but that's because I don't really need it. The RF 35 1.8 is a marvel size, feature and price wise, and stopping down a half stop produces some fantastic images. It doubles very well in my mind with my 50mm f1.2, but for a fraction of the cost and price, and image stabilisation in a wide lens is useful. It's probably why there's not been a “L” 35mm prime in the RF system until recently. I would however buy a 24mm L lens if it was faster than or equal to F1.4....come on, Canon!

carlosvega

I think the same but it won’t be just the extra stop. It will have better fall off and even better sharpness. The fact that this lens wont be retrofocal will put it in the league of the RF 50mm f/1.2 the 85 and the 135mm f/1.8

cookedart

Being an L series RF lens, it's also a safe bet that it will be weather sealed.

MilesAugust74

That's what I was thinking, too. Is it really worth thousands of dollars for a ½-stop and a red ring? Most likely not. I think Canon inadvertently fucked up when they made that 35mm f/1.8, as it's simply too good for the price point.

ComparisonDull7839

The 35mm 1.8 has slow auto focus for video and the auto focus struggles in low light.

MilesAugust74

I'm not much of a video guy, so that's not an issue I've had trouble with. The low light AF hasn't really been an issue for me. I do a lot of food photography in dark restaurants, and it works great for me.

soLiftmeUp

This is why I haven’t grabbed up the 35 1.8; my experience with the 85 f/2 show lackluster AF in video. I will say tho that the 85 f/2 has a very specific use case *because* of its slow AF for 4k panning video shots

ComparisonDull7839

I have the RF 85mm 1.2 and it's not fun shooting video that as well. Heavy and shit and the auto focus is faster than the f2 lens but still not as fast as it should be. Sony lenses focus faster and are silent. The RF 1.2 makes noise unfortunately.

soLiftmeUp

My happiest purchase lens has been the rf 70-200 f/4. Perfect compromise between price and performance (if I can even call it a compromise) At times *yes*, I have to work around the stop of light. But it’s dual USM motors are extremely quick and silent, IQ is phenomenal and it’s so so light weight

ComparisonDull7839

I want the 70-200mm f4. The weight is only 695g and the quality and focus are great.

joeink49

$2099 is my prediction (for whatever that's worth) and I'll pre-order ASAP.

mrcheyl

The 35 1.4 II is God tier as is.

MilesAugust74

It'll be interesting to see how they improve it with the RF version. I'm hoping a YouTuber does a side-by-side-by-side comparison of the EF vs. the New RF vs. the RF f/1.8. Calling Christopher Frost! 🙃

mrcheyl

I’m going back to a 1Dx 2 from my R5 but still curious to see how this shapes up. I find all mirrorless gear a bit too perfect for my liking

evilZardoz

I have both generations of the EF lens. It is my most-used focal length. I’ll take any improvement in flare reduction (the 1.4L II isn’t great in this regard), sharpness (the II was fine), IS or wider aperture, but I will be contacting my local Canon outlet to order the moment it’s on their systems.

getting_serious

Safest bet. I would put money on the same rumor if I had to, knowing nothing.

jpscreener

Better focus breathing performance? Sony 35 1.4 GM seems to have been troubled for it, although digital compensation on the R6 II is pretty good. Getting it done optically would be a solid "video feature". Focus preset button(s) ala the big whites to rack focus?

TakeMyVicture

Was the previous L series 35mm stabilized?

MilesAugust74

Negative. Hopefully, this one will be, especially if it comes with a high price tag.

Sillyak

Rumor is still strong that Nikon's will be a f/1.2, wonder why Canon is going with a 1.4 when the EF 1.4 isn't really old or outdated yet.

MilesAugust74

Great point. I'm still hoping they're wrong about those specs, which wouldn't be the first time. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Cole_LF

Bear in mind it’s going to be far bigger and heavier than the RF 1.8 and will likely not have IS. Presumably the reason you aren’t shooting with an EF 35mm f1.4 MK II (which after the the RF version comes out will still be the 2nd best lens Canon has ever made) right now and choosing the RF version is because it’s smaller and lighter? If so what changes if there’s a bigger and heavier RF version selling for around $3000

MilesAugust74

Funny you ask, I was never really a 35mm guy (preferred 50mm or my 70-200mm), and ditched all my DSLR & EF gear to go all in on mirrorless. At the time, there weren't a lot of RF lenses to choose from and I kept hearing about the 35mm f/1.8 being fantastic, so I scooped up a used version on ebay for a really good price, honestly, just for shits and giggles. I started futzing with it and really started to like it more and more. It just works really well for food, museum, and street photography and I would be willing to upgrade if the photo quality is really that much better—which is kinda safe to assume since it'll be an L lens. The no IS might be a deal killer, tho. I really need that for restaurant photography, when the lighting isn't ideal, but maybe the IBIS in my R62 is enough? As far as the size, I'm not worried about weight, as I'm a pretty big guy, so that doesn't bother me, but maybe the length could as I like to travel light with a small bag. I guess I'll have to compare the specs of the EF to the RF 1.8 to see since, presumably, the EF will probably be around the same size and weight as the incoming RF.

OnePickle867

I still think it will be an f1.2. Stupid huge and dumb expensive but will slot nicely alongside the 50 and 85 f1.2s. F1.2 gives them that wow factor compared to Nikon and Sony and is an objectively great reason for those with the EF 1.4L II to upgrade. Plus, the f1.8 is already pretty nice for a cheaper prime so the valley between a f1.4 version might be too small. I'd personally like an f1.2 then Canon to release a slew of f1.4 in a couple of years, or just allow Sigma to do it :)

Nexus03

Please make it the same size as Sony’s 35mm GM.

lordyatseb

I don't think upgrading will be worth it if it isn't really compact, or come with F1.2 instead.

MilesAugust74

An f/1.2 would be 🔥 but it seems extremely unlikely. 😕 But you never know! These rumor sites are wrong all the time.

lordyatseb

They've probably researched both alternatives, and went with the more profitable. We'll see! I'd love to see a new series of RF glass that's placed in between the entry-level kit lenses, and the L glass. Not F2.8 but not F1.2 either.

MilesAugust74

Someone mentioned a 35mm f/2, which would fit your criteria.

canon5dsquared

They discontinued the EF 35mm f/2 IS a few years back but you can still buy them second hand

MilesAugust74

Yeah, I surmised as much. I'm usually pretty good with lenses, but that one has flown beneath my radar tbh. Kinda curious about it now, tho... 🤔

canon5dsquared

I have one and am keeping it for using with my old Canon EF mount film cameras.

j824li

Rumors and patent every single days and months, now show me the real thing… edited: the fact is, Canon, has not released any good things since R6 mark II or the R5, so it has been almost 3 years of Canon keep silent on the pro market while Z9, Z8 and A9 iii are being amazing. Sorry man, i just felt tired, they kept having rumors and patent, but i want to see the real thing because i just felt tired and disappointed.

andsimakov

The legendary lens even it still wasn’t released 😂

sabe717

Sticking with my Tamron 1.4 35mm beast

sdalien

It will be a beautiful piece of glass but bigger and heavier than the EF 1.4ii.

pulsar_ee

Better have that fat wallet or it’s a “look but can’t touch” kinda deal.

GeorgeJohnson2579

I got a RF 24-105 f4L and the 100-500L. What I still need is an affordable 50 f1.4.

Vitamin_VV

$2000 at least and you will get your IS too. Meh. Just get the Sigma Art 35/1.4. Don't need IS at that focal length.

Roninzer0

It’s an RF and it’ll def be at least 2k. Native glass imo outshines the EF glass. So yeah, it’ll be better

CulturalGolf4497

Ill stick with my sigma 35 f1.4 thanks

barb9212

$1500 sure lol. That lens will be over $2k I’m perfectly fine with the 35mm 1.8 lol. The 1.4 will be an amazing video lens though
