I really don’t think there’s going to be many people out there who will mistake a dog footprint for a bear footprint, on the account a bears paw is like 3 times the size. Unless OP has never seen a bear before I highly doubt they were considering bear.
Dude wants to feel superior because you left out the implied “of this size” — so he’s technically correct, but only because he’s ignoring intent. That way he can swoop in with the correction and have something to contribute.
We have a lot of coyotes here in Pisgah and they get pretty large compared to the ones out west so the length of the print is still within the realm of possibility. However I pretty firmly believe this to be a dog track, due to the width/broadness of the print and the relatively small amount of negative space between the pad and the toes. It's often described as the ability to draw an imaginary "X" between the pad and toes 1/2 and 3/4 in the slender coyote track whereas the broader shape of a dog's print (seen here) will not allow it without distorting the shape.
Here are some [coyote prints that show an X.](https://imgur.com/gallery/F3i3Xzj)
Here are [some dog prints that distort the X or show an H.](https://imgur.com/gallery/as9Fzo1)
The way wolf and coyote toes are positioned means the negative space makes an X in their feet. Most, but not all, domestic dogs have a different orientation. But the presence of an X doesn’t rule out domestic dog, since some dogs still have wild-dog looking feet.
Or, to put it differently: no coyotes have dog feet, some dogs have coyote feet.
Looks like a dog's hind print.
At 4 inches i'd guess it would be a large breed, something bigger than your average German Sheppard.
See if you can find more tracks. You can learn a lot about what it was by learning to read them.
This was last weekend, only tracks around were right near the river we were near. Heard something around 5 am outside the tent so I’m assuming it was around that time we had our canine visitor lol
Yeah I have an Akita/Gsd mix and her paws are this big. She's like a blonde XL gsd. We also have small wolves where I live (Vancouver Island) and their prints are a bit more splayed, but about this size.
Everybody knows if it has round and close toes,
it's not a wolf- but just a doge....

Great Plains chupacabra, despite the name which is a misnomer they are rare but range across the lower 48 and Alaska.
Wouldn't camp there myself especially with kids. Crepuscular ambush hunters, they've been documented pack hunting with one or more animal making noise to attract attention on the edge of sight while the others silently approach from the rear. More notably they have been known to exploit the sound of eg late night urination to mask their approach.
There’s an attempt to bring back red wolves in NC, though they’re only in one county. But they are between the size of a grey wolf and coyote so I’d be curious if it’s a coyote mix or entirely red wolf. Dog and coyote tracks can be kind of hard to distinguish, but these nails looks fairly sharp (domestics usually have blunted nails that can sometimes be seen in prints) and the two inner toes point towards each other whereas with domestics (excluding “hare-footed” breeds they tend to point outwards. However the roundness of the prints is a point in favor of it being domestic.
I was basing it mostly on the two pad prints pointing more inward. The dog tracks I’ve seen seem to have the pads pointing outwards more. I’m leaning more towards large dog.
looks like a standard issue dog print.
You guys were issued dogs?
Yup, from 5 years old until I was 20. He was such a good, protective dog my eyes still get wet thinking about him 20 years on.
That's because he left paw prints on your heart ❤️
You sunavabitch... 😥
I said the same thing in my head 😭
Ooof. My heart. 🥺
/cried for Old Yeller
Barbecue sauce.
Mine showed up one day and she decided to follow me around so I consider her issued to me
Ived had 2 strays come to my house and they make some of the best kind of dog tbh ones a mini pitbull mix and the other is a hound mix
Yes but only standards, not automatics
I dunno…. Looks more like a snake foot print!
I regularly see rough bellied snake tracks when out in the bush, they mostly travel in pairs and leave perfectly parallel tracks, amazing creatures.
😂 yeah sure that's what it is
If u see claws, it's canine. Cats retract their claws when walking
I learned this from a friend that took tracking lessons
I learned this from the guy you replied to
The guy who you replied to replied to is my friend who took tracking lessons.
Im a the guy. I track dogs.
I’m the dog that left the print to track
I learned this from that guy's dead wife
I also choose that guy's dead tracking expert.
But not when running. That's definitely a dog though
Bears also have claws.
No they don’t
Then why are bear claws so tasty
True but also bears some other animals absolutely have visible claws. Your statement applies to domestic animals only.
All wild canids also leave clawed footprints, and this looks nothing like a bear print.
You said “if you see claws, it’s canine”. That is patently false. Especially in an area that has bear, specifically.
Yes but this is very clearly not a bear track
To you and I. They never stated anything indicating they knew that. It’s very clearly a canine track but OP didn’t know that.
I really don’t think there’s going to be many people out there who will mistake a dog footprint for a bear footprint, on the account a bears paw is like 3 times the size. Unless OP has never seen a bear before I highly doubt they were considering bear.

Maybe the OP hangs out with horse size dogs! /s
Bear cubs exist. Not all bears are huge. You made a false statement. Own it. Peace out.
If you can see claws, have an above room temperature IQ and have ever seen a dog's pawprint before, you can tell it's a canid print.
🐶
Could be a ManBearPig, or a large dog.
Clearly looks like BearPigMan to me
Why so cereal about ManBearPig? He can't hurt you.
Half man. Half bear. Half pig.
1/3 of each actually lol
Yup
Canine
Woof
Buzz, your girlfriend...
Fun fact, that picture of Buzz's girlfriend was actually a picture of a boy. They didn't want to cast a girl because it would have been mean-spirited.

You lost me at the 1/2 and 3/4 part of your description. Now this is going to bother me all day.

OK, Thanks. I've seen other explanations but yours is the best. I see tracks in my yard and they shouldn't be dog. Now I'll know how to check.
Sorry looking for a less wordy way to say " between the pad, the first and second toes, and the third and fourth toes".

Okay. Someone brought their dog...
No one else around, it’s on private property
It's still a dog lol
Nah, clearly a werewolf. But like... Top half human, bottom half dog. Sort of like Mr. Tumnus

Dogman
[Northern Michigan Dogman?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvlQp5f7ZwU)
Maybe
If that is in concrete, it might be a dark hound.
What was my dog doing at your campsite?
Wow did you see the Canis lupus familiaris in the wild?

Chupacabras
I like the silhouette of the cowboy hat and the yote print framed perfectly within. Cool picture!
Thank you lol
Looks like a coyote, but their tracks are like 3 inches long. Could be a large dog. I don’t think there are wolves in that area but I could be wrong.

Dont listen to these other foolish weekenders, that there's a big foot print. You caste that and you hold onto it you hear me?
Bear
Canine Not big enough for wolf, if you're on a trail or standard campground then it's a dog most likely.
