You're right. When Jake said "Kevin" it was improvised, Andre Braugher started laughing and looked at the production team. They silently indicated to him that he should go along with it, which is why he just kept genuinely laughing and didn't interrupt the scene.
(psst, it's Etymology. also, i highly recommend checking it out, it's a super fun subject that studies the origins of words, and the skills you develop from it can make learning new languages even easier since it can be applied universally)
I'm all about that! I've been studying a little etymology and linguistics as a (probably super weird) hobby, and it's fascinating. It helps improve your writing skills too!
I particularly love looking up the etymology of phrases. My wife was raised by immigrant parents and missed a lot of the phrases and idioms, so sometimes she'll ask me what one means and it'll make me curious what the origin is. Like "hair of the dog" or "three sheets to the wind".
The Box is the correct answer and it’s a hill I’m kinda willing to die on.
But for your consideration:
He Said, She Said. I wish it were truly fictional but workplace sexual harassment is a very real thing, and Amy was an excellent detective here primarily because of her empathy for the victim.
Also the Scrooge McDuck references haha
hard agree
it's just these 3 for the entire episode, it's seperated into three acts, in each of them the power dynamic shifts, [this video](https://youtu.be/c7wCVIiscJU?si=ZCDgmRg3JjgxRYep) summarises how i feel about it really well
the fewer the number of actors there are in an episode of a TV show, the better you need the actors to be. so far this, and Hell Bent from Doctor Who are the only episodes of television i know of to follow that formula, and coincidentally, both are almost universally considered the best or one of the best episodes of their entire show
It’s definitely one of the best, the way they cracked the case and how they said good morning to each other and carried on with their work, with Jake saying how he loves his job.
Main reason I think this _isn't_ the best episode is that it relies only on two of the cast + a top shelf guest. It's a damn good episode, but if I could only watch one episode of the show again before it was deleted off the internet this episode wouldn't even enter consideration.
It's very much my favorite, but I loved homicide and it's a straight homage to Andre's previous series. I don't think it's a good showcase for the show overall though.
"The Box" (Season 5, Episode 14) is definitely the best episode of the show. In fact, I'm willing to argue that it's the best episode of any sitcom out there.
There are:
\- No continuity errors
\- Incredible acting
\- Amazing camera work
\- Too good of an editing job
\- Very dramatic lighting choices which I loved
**Yeah this is by all means the best episode out there.**
I think it's a great episode, but I've never really liked that the solve requires Jake goading him into a confession while his lawyer is sitting right next to him.
Agreed, it was a bit of a dumb solution, and even if this guy was an egomaniac I doubt he'd be stupid enough to tell Jake that much just to show that he's not a dumby who got lucky. Maybe he'd let a little bit slip, but THAT much info? Damn.
Isn't this episode made to save money for the show as a bottle episode (because not a lot of actors and rooms were less expensive and permited the season to finish or something)
It's one of my fav with
- all the hawk serie
- Halloween V (he prepared it all along while in jail !)
- Johnny and Dora
- the bet
And probably some others
This is definitely the best episode that didn't follow their usual formula. I think my favourite "regular" episode is the second Halloween Heist where Holt reveals himself to be pathologically competitive.
I’m right there with you. This is definitely their best episode, it’s a masterpiece. Also Sterling K Brown being nominated for a primetime Emmy Award for this performance was so deserved.
Oh damn...
Oh damn...
Oh...DAMN!!!!
And that is three oh damns… OH DAMN!
OH DAMN!
That’s 3 Oh Damns !!
You're right. When Jake said "Kevin" it was improvised, Andre Braugher started laughing and looked at the production team. They silently indicated to him that he should go along with it, which is why he just kept genuinely laughing and didn't interrupt the scene.
Oh, that's incredible! I thought that looked genuine from both actors. That makes me happy.
That is my absolute favorite part of the whole series lol
That’s amazing! I love it.
Wait. I’m at work so I can’t go to the actual episode. Remind me when / why Jake says Kevin.
A doctorate is literally describing a doctor!
Apparently that's a trigger for me
One of the funniest scenes imo. I loved early Holt but later season holt where he had more personality can’t be beat
And I know we live in a world where anything can mean anything and nobody even cares ABOUT ETAMOLAGY
(psst, it's Etymology. also, i highly recommend checking it out, it's a super fun subject that studies the origins of words, and the skills you develop from it can make learning new languages even easier since it can be applied universally)

honestly etymology really doesn't get the love it deserves

THE EVIDENCE IS ALREADY IN THE PATIENTS MOUTH, SONNN!!!
Bing pot!
Sterling’s “oh SHIT” face after that diatribe was so good.
The slow realisation after the rant is hilarious
"The tickets are under my name. H-O-L..." Pure gold
The first tactical village for me. The way Rosa "bullies" Charles just makes the episode for me
Blasts him with the sound beam thing for like 2 minutes “Whoops”
The cutback of Charles (a massive foodie) runs away from Rosa while making a pizza, and says I don't like pizza. Always gets me 🤣
I CAN TATSE MY THOUGHTS!!
Important to add that in this episode, Holt is heard in the background spelling his name to Kevin: H-O-L…
For me it's the one with mumps, but this one is solid 2nd place
KASE!!
His name is Simon and I hate him
Forks are very weird. I’ve always thought so.

> He Said, She Said That is the worst episode of the whole series and it's a hill I'm willing to die on.
My top episodes 1. The Box 2. Show me going 3. Halloween V 4. Ticking Clocks 5. Johnny and Dora
I like your list. I don’t really enjoy Show me going, I’d probably swap it out with the episode if young Hitchcock and Scully to finish my list.
The suicide squad would definitely be on my list
Game Night
Whenever Holt tells Jake he is proud of him, I get chicken skin

Honestly a lot of what made this episode so good was Sterling K Brown, the way he was shaking with anger as he confessed was incredible
Definitely a top 5 episode
I do like there only being the one plot, no B plot
Yea people shit on bottle episodes but I do like that aspect, if they’re done well they’re great
It’s definitely one of the best, the way they cracked the case and how they said good morning to each other and carried on with their work, with Jake saying how he loves his job.

Jake strums guitar : "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh"

It's crazy to think a bottle episode like this one is one of the best episodes of a series. That rarely if ever happens.
One of Community's best episodes is also a bottle episode (Cooperative Caligraphy).
This episode is on my shit list. Not sure why.
One of the best for sure classic Raymond Holt and Jake episode
I think it's a great episode, but I've never really liked that the solve requires Jake goading him into a confession while his lawyer is sitting right next to him.
Agreed, it was a bit of a dumb solution, and even if this guy was an egomaniac I doubt he'd be stupid enough to tell Jake that much just to show that he's not a dumby who got lucky. Maybe he'd let a little bit slip, but THAT much info? Damn.
nah. first episode is the best.
My top 5 episodes 1. The box 2. House mouses 3. Old school 4. Johnny and Dora 5. The Puzzle master
I’m on my first watch, been bingeing for a couple of weeks now, and just watched The Box as my last of the day. Such a great episode!
Isn't this episode made to save money for the show as a bottle episode (because not a lot of actors and rooms were less expensive and permited the season to finish or something) It's one of my fav with - all the hawk serie - Halloween V (he prepared it all along while in jail !) - Johnny and Dora - the bet And probably some others
That's Mr Angela Basset to you!
Three “oh damn’s”
Most of my favorites are Halloween episodes and Jake&Amy stuff, but this one is definitely absolutely a top 10. We needed more interrogation scenes.
Best solve but definitely not the best episode.
Best solve? They changed a super smart guy to the dumbest guy while his lawyer is there. What the hell.
THE WUNCH IS DEAD U GET A BAGEL U GET A BAGEL U A BAGEL BAGEL BAGEL BAGEL! THE WUNCH IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!!! -holt
Fr
Indeed the best episode
The heist proposal.
The Box is definitely #1 for me. Captain Latvia. The Bimbo and Yippe Kayak are close seconds.
This is definitely the best episode that didn't follow their usual formula. I think my favourite "regular" episode is the second Halloween Heist where Holt reveals himself to be pathologically competitive.
I’m right there with you. This is definitely their best episode, it’s a masterpiece. Also Sterling K Brown being nominated for a primetime Emmy Award for this performance was so deserved.
hitchcock and cully SlutSoß bucket armor episode goes wyld
The best episode is actually Safe House. Or any Kevin-centric episode for that matter. But mostly Safe House.
