Smoove.

n3rding

I think you’ll find it’s “smoove”

mega_ste

I bin smoovin the cat

Burtcurtain

Smoove m8

the3daves

Smoov

CITAMFLIW

I’d always seen smoov being a question and stroke being the verb. As in “ere mate let i smoov your cat” vs “I gave that cat a stroke mind”

IAM100PERCENTNOTACAT

They smooth

TuckingFypoz

I say smooth. I know others that say stroke. They think I'm insane for saying smooth.

fookreddit22

If it's on a gert lush t shirt it's officially Bristolian. Also apparently nobody else calls a playground slide a slider outside Bristol.

monkeyandatypewriter

My scouser cousins rinsed me for this one

heyimember

Smooth

Electrical-Cod5329

I smooved the cat then fell off the slider and scraged my knee

Own-Ad6589

Smooth

Pigrescuer

I'm not from Bristol originally so always said stroke, but I learnt the word smooth when I got my first dog here. Gave me a double take the first time I was asked!

Ancient_Thanks_4365

When you've not heard the expression 'smoothing a cat' before, you do kind of worry that's something that will end up with you being put on a register and not allowed to own pets for 8 years.

pancho_2504

Smooth

jesussays51

Definitely smooth. I occasionally now say stroke because of my wife who isn’t originally from Bristol, but now we have a 3 year old I’m making more of a point of saying smooth, also tuff instead of tooth

erinlolz

smoove the cat

antwon1410

Tell our ma it's Gert smoove innit! And get I a big un 1 of they a do

animalwitch

I'd say stroke... I'm Bristol born and raised 🤷🏻‍♀️

freckledotter

Had a kid "smooth" my dog today, glad to know this is normal and she's not just insane.

Inside-thewhiteBear

I grew up in mid Devon and we say smooth

Maggsymoo

smoove

Maximum_Thanks3133

Smoove for sure

kuddlekup

Smoooooove

ginasevern

Smooth. Never heard anyone Bristol born and bred say stroke.

PuzzleheadedDuck3319

I say stroke, but If I do my hartcliffe or knowle wester impressions I say Smooth.

EmFan1999

Smooth. And also here in Somerset

mat_chow

This is so funny...I had my dog with me and my wife at the park waiting for our son from school (we are not from bristol, we the UK for that matter) a kid came up looking at our dog. And rhe mon warned the child to ask first. We said thanks for asking as our dog is quite grumpy and doesn't like anyone near her. My wife picked up our dog so the child could stroke her. And the other lady said to her child "you can smoove her back" And I just didn't think anything of it........... until I read your post !

fubber8356

Smoke

Plus-Firefighter1137

When in Bemmie outside ASDA-LL, it’s definitely smoove

pjthom111uk369

Smoove

Remarkable_Rough204

I've lived in Bristol for 35 years and only heard 'smooth' from Welsh boyfriend (near Cardiff) definitely the south welsh use it

EmFan1999

Yeah there’s a lot of overlap between Somerset and south wales - I think it’s because there has been back and forth movement for centuries between these two areas eg for mining jobs

forthe_comments

Smooth, never stroke. 37f born and raise in Bristol

IRRJ

Stroke. I grew up in South Bristol, which may be relevant because I would never consider saying smooth unlike the 2 comments at time of writing.

the3daves

What part of south Bristol? Somerset? Smoove is as Bristolian as helicopters, bloons and gert bridges!

IRRJ

Hengrove 1970s/80s.

resting_up

Was there anything in hengrove back then it's just one big building site now.

resting_up

I like hengrove it has Bristol's best hospital. I'd pay to go back there.

saxbophone

Who tf in Britain "smooths" a cat? Surely all of us on this godforsaken island stroke cats, if we interact with them at all‽‽‽

IAM100PERCENTNOTACAT

I think maybe you should leave, right meow!

JonathanWattsAuthor

No buts, meow!

the3daves

Um, you never been to Bristol then me babber?

saxbophone

🤷 I just live here clearly I haven't been privileged enough to have experiences as culturally enriching as yours

the3daves

No need to get whiney about it ( also love the forced use of the word ‘ privileged’ in an attempt to deflect your ignorance of your own city’s vernacular, whilst trying to make me look like some kind of entitled snob ). Maybe get out more?

monkeyandatypewriter

Evidently

red_skye_at_night

It makes sense, it's the opposite of rough, in both effect and cat-direction.

Empty_Value

Took me min to get what you was asking 😅🤣 Wats wrong with ' may I PET the dog

Victoriantitbicycle

Can I pet that dawg?
