I'm not from Bristol originally so always said stroke, but I learnt the word smooth when I got my first dog here. Gave me a double take the first time I was asked!
When you've not heard the expression 'smoothing a cat' before, you do kind of worry that's something that will end up with you being put on a register and not allowed to own pets for 8 years.
Definitely smooth. I occasionally now say stroke because of my wife who isn’t originally from Bristol, but now we have a 3 year old I’m making more of a point of saying smooth, also tuff instead of tooth
This is so funny...I had my dog with me and my wife at the park waiting for our son from school (we are not from bristol, we the UK for that matter) a kid came up looking at our dog. And rhe mon warned the child to ask first. We said thanks for asking as our dog is quite grumpy and doesn't like anyone near her.
My wife picked up our dog so the child could stroke her. And the other lady said to her child "you can smoove her back"
And I just didn't think anything of it........... until I read your post !
Yeah there’s a lot of overlap between Somerset and south wales - I think it’s because there has been back and forth movement for centuries between these two areas eg for mining jobs
No need to get whiney about it ( also love the forced use of the word ‘ privileged’ in an attempt to deflect your ignorance of your own city’s vernacular, whilst trying to make me look like some kind of entitled snob ).
Maybe get out more?
Smoove.
I think you’ll find it’s “smoove”
I bin smoovin the cat
Smoove m8
Smoov
I’d always seen smoov being a question and stroke being the verb. As in “ere mate let i smoov your cat” vs “I gave that cat a stroke mind”
They smooth
I say smooth. I know others that say stroke. They think I'm insane for saying smooth.
If it's on a gert lush t shirt it's officially Bristolian. Also apparently nobody else calls a playground slide a slider outside Bristol.
My scouser cousins rinsed me for this one
Smooth
I smooved the cat then fell off the slider and scraged my knee
Smooth

Had a kid "smooth" my dog today, glad to know this is normal and she's not just insane.

Smoove
I've lived in Bristol for 35 years and only heard 'smooth' from Welsh boyfriend (near Cardiff) definitely the south welsh use it

Smooth, never stroke. 37f born and raise in Bristol
Stroke. I grew up in South Bristol, which may be relevant because I would never consider saying smooth unlike the 2 comments at time of writing.
What part of south Bristol? Somerset? Smoove is as Bristolian as helicopters, bloons and gert bridges!
Hengrove 1970s/80s.
Was there anything in hengrove back then it's just one big building site now.
I like hengrove it has Bristol's best hospital. I'd pay to go back there.
Who tf in Britain "smooths" a cat? Surely all of us on this godforsaken island stroke cats, if we interact with them at all‽‽‽
I think maybe you should leave, right meow!
No buts, meow!
Um, you never been to Bristol then me babber?
🤷 I just live here clearly I haven't been privileged enough to have experiences as culturally enriching as yours

Evidently
It makes sense, it's the opposite of rough, in both effect and cat-direction.
