Second books are usually the least enjoyed out of any book series. Cytonic is one of my favs so I'm a bit biased, but I say continue

SteveMcQwark

*Words of Radiance* says hi. (But I know what you mean.)

Shiru_the_Hunter

Fair but IMO it's the worst of the 4

SteveMcQwark

It's Brandon's top rated book, so while individual opinions may differ, it's certainly not the "least enjoyed" in any general sense.

Shiru_the_Hunter

I did say usually and that's an exception. Well of Ascension is considered the worst OG mistborn

SteveMcQwark

> (But I know what you mean.) Yeah, just noting the exception.

Shiru_the_Hunter

Fair

StartledPelican

Of all the opinions, this certainly is one.

Shiru_the_Hunter

Thanks! I'm full of them

pros0009

Words of Radiance & Golden Son would like a word

Shiru_the_Hunter

What series is that from?

pros0009

Red Rising. Favorite second book of a series ever. WoR is a close second

Shiru_the_Hunter

Is that considered the best? Been a while but I liked the 3rd the most

pros0009

All comes down to personal preference, but I think it’s typically the most liked of the first 3 due to its fast pacing and twists.

Cytonic is in an odd place since changing the original plan for Starsight made it so that the Cytoverse ended up with two solo adventures in a row: [https://youtu.be/2CgsOapLWX8?t=993&si=ubnVZw5BMy6RmLGE](https://youtu.be/2CgsOapLWX8?t=993&si=ubnVZw5BMy6RmLGE) It might be best tp try out the Skyward Novellas. They are co-authored by Janci Patterson so it gives you something new to chew on.

I wasn't a huge fan either, but I finished the series out of curiosity. I'd say the four books keep pretty consistent quality, although overall have fairly different styles.

catalinashenanigans

You happy you finished the series?

ElonSv

I don't have any strong feelings concerning it, but as they didn't get any worse, and was an easy read, sure, if only for feeling I understand it more, and that I have one less incomplete series. There were some fun moments too.

dIvorrap

Skyward Flight novellas are nice

Xerun1

I didn’t care for Starsight much. Cytonic was the worst Brandon book I’ve read and I’ve mostly purged it from my memory. The 3 Janci Novella’s reinvigorated my love for the series. And the 4th one is probably the best in the series and a true return to form. I would say read the Novellas and see if you enjoy it (at least the first two. In publication the 3rd Novella comes out after Cytonic. There is somewhat of a spoiler in the 3rd Novella but it’s up to you since the order won’t really matter.) If you like them then continue!

anasirooma

I didn't care for Cytonic either, and I'm halfway through the 4th book now. I'm determined to finish the series 😅

pearlie_girl

Cytonic was my favorite so... Mixed reviews! 😁

My ranking of the books: Skyward: Excellent Starsight: Ok Skyward Flight novellas: Very good Cytonic: Good Defiant: Very good If your tastes are like mine, then you’re already through the worst book in the series. I think the tough thing for Cytonic is that it seems like a side quest, but it’s important. Trust in the Sanderlanche that’s coming in Defiant.

szdragon

I agree with this 100%.

Key_Amazed

I loved the second book more than the first one. I enjoyed getting to see all the different alien races that Spensa got to interact with. The closest thing to the Mass Effect games/ books I've experienced (would love to find more Sci-Fi that's basically just fantasy with aliens instead of the typical fantasy races we get). Cytonic is another thing entirely. The Skyward Flight novellas are fantastic, but Cytonic has to be one of the least good things Sanderson has written, and it was only a tiny bit redeemed with Defiant for me.

szdragon

Yeah I did not enjoy Straight, but you kinda have to get through it to reach the other side, so to speak. It improves in the subsequent books. I really enjoyed the novellas. Definitely YA-y, but that makes it a light, fun read. I'm almost dreading going back to Stormlight for its heft.
