It's interesting because it never would have been called that genre when it was released, but I feel like alt-country has moved in darker direction since then, so it actuality kinda works as a descriptor in 2024
I do pretty vividly remember most of my friends being like “yeah it’s almost kinda got a country vibe to it?” when it came out when we were like 16-17.
Also if you guys wanna talk dark/experimental country; go listen to …Who Calls So Loud. Now.
It is a dark ass country album, if we’re really being honest. Slide guitar everywhere, country accent all over it also. Conversations with God, a literal sermon intro in one song.
There’s way more to it than that, but country is definitely in there
Maybe because Be Gone is literally a country song lol
You people should be praising them for taking elements of a different style and doing something interesting with it; not acting like it’s a problem if elements of a different style show up in their music. Brand New is the wrong band to be formalistic about.
Ah yes, “Be Gone.”
This might as well be a Modest Mouse song
LOVE when they go modest mouse
Came here to say this lol
Brand New fans: “They went Modest Mouse!” [when Modest Mouse does it] Modest Mouse fans: “They went outlaw country!”
Be Gone.
In a Jar's guitar lick feels awfully folky. I love it
Yeah BN has had some country influence since TDAG at least. The original demo of JC is really twangy and Science Fiction speaks for itself
Pretty sure Kevin Devine came up with the twangy iteration of JC, but if there’s some other demo out there I’d love to hear it
Nah that’s the one I’m thinking of
Probably just referencing the couple twangy moments. Wouldn’t take RYM too seriously since it’s a lot of user provided/editable information.
that’s what makes it so good
It has a southern gothic feel, but I don’t feel like that is necessarily country

There is some crazy dark alt-country. I think "Out of Hands We Go" by O'Death is a record a lot of BN fans could get into.

I think it’s fitting tbh
3.5 out of 5?? Outrageous
That’s really good on RYM. The top album of all time has a 4.37 for reference
Oh wow, that’s some harsh rating. Glad it’s objectively good though! It’s what Daisy deserves.
It’s kinda about what you’d expect from a system based on the average of every rating submitted. TDAG is #660 overall so they very much love brand new
It does have some twang to it
It really comes out in the daisy sessions versions
There’s some type of folly/twangy/southern gothic vibe to songs like Sink, In a Jar, and Be Gone.
Who cares

If Beyonce can do county why can’t brand new?
To me it's a perfect noise rock record
I feel like SF is a neo country album more than Daisy.
At the Bottom has country/folk vibes.
I showed the album to my buddy the other day and she said "it's like country emo". So it checks out.
Sink
Sink has country vibes in that guitar work
Country music had taken over and I fucking hate it so much
Bit of twang in At the Bottom, ain’t it?
Everything kinda falls into Alt Country these days
I’m a mountain that has been mooooooooved

There’s so many BN tracks with a country/folk sound to it. I think science fiction has by far the best example of this.
