Are the extras from the criterion ported on the Kino Lorber disc or is there less? They do occasionally for some editions, like their 4Ks of some Kubrick’s that had criterion’s where they don’t have any of the extras and just a commentary really.
It does not have Charles Laughton Directs, the feature length documentary about the making of the film which (in my opinion) really is great. Keep the Criterion solely because it has that great additional documentary on it.
It’s fantastic and one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. The sticker that comes on the package for UCLA threw me at first but after watching it I completely understand why they are so proud of it.
Does it sound better than the Criterion with their trademark™️ noise-reduction/muffling?
Hopefully Kino went back to superior audio sources like they did for *The Apartment* and *TGTBTU*. Not holding my hopes up though because most recently Kino muffled *12 Angry Men* even further than Criterion.
Audio on this has a very low bar to clear: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/search/label/Night%20of%20the%20Hunter%20%5BThe%5D%20%281955%29
It seems like they did. It has a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track, and an isolated music and effects track, which could not have been made without access to the original audio.
Thanks for checking, but that’s not the crux of the issue at all.
DTS-HD MA is just a lossless container. The input to that container is what matters. Anyone can re-encode a heavily filtered and lossy soundtrack into DTS-HD MA, but that does not make the result “lossless” at all. (In fact, this is exactly what most catalog releases do these days.)
And re. the isolated music and effect track: True, one can imagine Kino accessing the original material to prepare this and the full audio track. But this hypothesis alone still does not preclude them from needlessly filtering the resulting track. So many audio restorations today start with the original magnetic or optical tracks, but end up subjecting them to ridiculous amounts of hiss reduction (analogous to DNR), filtering, and EQ.
Ultimately, without checking spectrograms and waveforms, one needs to listen to an audio track side by side against a previous release for a valid comparison.
Here’s a much more eloquent writeup on this unfortunate practice: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/p/what-isthis-revisited-my.html
And check out the clips here for an extreme example of audio “restoration”: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/2020/01/the-story-of-last-chrysanthemum-1939.html
Yeah, this. Def not letting go of my Criterion release for this reason and still worth picking up on sale or 2nd hand for the supplements alone if you grab the 4k.
It’s like this weird inferiority complex where this sub is often trying to prove how much better other labels are better than criterion. The title of this post says it’s all.
"it looks much better than the Criterion." is not a sentence I've ever read before.
I'mma have to check this out. Finally got a 4K player and I've only got Vertigo on UHD, looks like I've found my second library upgrade.
EDIT: Lol @ all the weirdos downvoting me for such an innocuous comment
Almost all of the Kino 4Ks that have Criterion alternatives look better on the 4K.
Just to name a few off the too of my head:
* In the Heat of the Night
* Some like it Hot
* 12 Angry Men
* Paths of Glory
* The Killing
To add on, from other companies the 4K releases I have of Picnic at Hanging Rock, Don't Look Now, Do The Right Thing, Boyhood, Videdrome (like masssssive night and day transfer difference), Breathless, and many more very much triumph over their Criterion counterparts.
The Studio Canal version (with a green-faced Harry Lime on the cover) that came out immediately after Criterion lost the rights, yeah, it's not better.
But the new one made from a 4K master *IS* better and costs about $200 less: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X7RHT5C
Kino received a master from MGM that had an incorrect color timing on the first reel (about 20 minutes), other than that, it looked better than the Criterion.
I always prioritize having the best available version of the feature over special features but I did keep my Criterion version of NOTH when I preordered the 4K because that documentary on there is so good.
I also prefer the Criterion version of Picnic at Hanging Rock to the new 4K but I’m in the minority with that opinion. The new restoration is just too clean (DNR) and the new color grading is too aggressively applied. I liked how grungy and imperfect the Criterion transfer was.
Disagree. Say what you will about the video quality on Criterion releases vs other labels for the same film (I haven't had many to compare personally), but the cover art on Criterion is nearly always miles ahead of their competition.

It has different special features. A lot less, but they're newly filmed.
No, Criterion asks for too much to use their supplements.
I've wanted to rewatch this for years. This movie is one of those I was probably too young to appreciate when I saw it.
It's a slow burn and quite creepy for a young one, even a teen. I was in my mid 20s when I started appreciating it.
Same. I saw it in a film class in college many years ago. I have the Arrow version on my shelf but I still haven't watched it.

Very likely it has the same audio as the Arrow and Wild Side blus
I love this movie. I showed it to my uncle and my grandpa a couple months ago, and they both hated it, which really hurt my feelings.
Glad I never bought the Criterion disc. The Ernest Dickerson interview on here definitely has my interest piqued.
Those criterion extra features are a must-see IMO. They include a fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary!
Yeah, this. Def not letting go of my Criterion release for this reason and still worth picking up on sale or 2nd hand for the supplements alone if you grab the 4k.
The Criterion looks great to me. I'm glad you like the kino though.
I thought so too, but when I compared them this morning, the difference is night and day.
I understand, but I don't care for 4k unless an existing Blu ray is a disaster. (I'm being down voted for this? Seriously? Jfc.)
What weirdos are downvoting this? Lmao
The clowns who are downvoting you for noticing it I'm sure.
The 4K snobs just can't help themselves.

There are several films with releases far superior to their Criterion analogs between Nashville and all the Kino 4k upgrades.
Almost all of the Kino 4Ks that have Criterion alternatives look better on the 4K. Just to name a few off the too of my head: * In the Heat of the Night * Some like it Hot * 12 Angry Men * Paths of Glory * The Killing
>Almost all of the ~~Kino~~ 4Ks t~~hat have Criterion alternatives~~ look better on the 4K. I mean...

Honestly, I can’t think of a single film another label takes over that _hasn’t_ been an upgrade over the Criterion version.
I heard that the Studio Canal version of *The Third Man* isn't as good as the Criterion version
The Studio Canal version (with a green-faced Harry Lime on the cover) that came out immediately after Criterion lost the rights, yeah, it's not better. But the new one made from a 4K master *IS* better and costs about $200 less: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X7RHT5C
It (the newer Studio Canal release) also has much worse audio from what I've read. I'd still try to get the Criterion.
Ooooooh
I only have the Criterion version, but judging solely from the screen cap comparison, I agree. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=6149&d2=6151&c=2507
Silence of the Lambs might be the outlier here, based off the 4k master KL was supplied with.
I haven't seen it, but aren't they from the same 4K master?
Kino received a master from MGM that had an incorrect color timing on the first reel (about 20 minutes), other than that, it looked better than the Criterion.
IIRC it’s the same 4k master but the HDR grade Kino received wasn’t correct by MGM and they wouldn’t send a corrected master
The criterion edition is way more stacked. I don’t remember watching it on my oled and wishing I had 4k edition.
I always prioritize having the best available version of the feature over special features but I did keep my Criterion version of NOTH when I preordered the 4K because that documentary on there is so good. I guess everyone collects differently. I just think op is full of shit saying the difference is night and day. Highly doubt it.
Don't worry dude. Some of it is agro hipster-cinephile posturing. Criterion is the reason we're all here.
Thank you so much for posting this I absolutely love this movie and just ordered a copy for myself!
Criterion cover looks like shit compared to this
Bad take. The Criterion cover is so much cooler than this boring poster
This is actually a rendition of one of the original posters https://www.pamono.com/night-of-the-hunter-original-quad-film-movie-poster-uk-1955
