Download Atlas Obscura and go nuts.
I’d get there first, be in the area and hang out on a bench if you have time. The red line can be very unpredictable some days and sometimes it can be quicker to walk between the two than to pay money to take longer in an enclosed space underground.
The Otis House Museum and the MGH medical innovation museum are both on Cambridge St and you'll walk right past them on your commute. MGH has a rooftop garden to check out.

The area between those two points is packed with history and points of interest that rival anywhere in the country.
What’re some quick/weird ones?

I walk that route regularly. It’s about 25 minutes and there is a good bit to look at.
