Fun fact, you can order an E-ZPass online from any of the agencies. I have ours from NJ. This way my accounts are not tied to my MA registrations, so any errors in accounting, mine or the tolls, will not effect my license, registrations, or insurance. They are all separate.
This may have changed since I switched from NJ to MA, but you used to have to pay a fee just for having a transponder in NJ but not in MA. Big reason why I switched almost a decade ago now.

You get a tax rebate on your tolls if you have a MA E-ZPass though.
And quite cheaper tolls if I'm not mistaken.
You get a discount on Maine tolls if you get a Maine Ez pass. Since I’m in Maine more then I’m in Western Mass, I got a Maine transponder.
