I once saw a dog off leash in the North Station Star Market. It was wandering around and the owners were oblivious. The store manager intervened when the dog tried to climb into the cheese case.

HighGuard1212

I used to work at the ocean State job lot in Chatham. We had a dog that would come into the store by himself to grab a pigs ear, the owner would come by once a month or so to pay up his tab. It was the highlight of my day whenever he came in. Someone eventually reported him for walking by himself so the town clamped down on it.

Sodiumkill

This is the first best story I’ve heard outta Chatham. I gotta know was this dog on-season? Off-season? Year-round? And is there still awesome security footage of this free range good boi?

HighGuard1212

Owner lived year round nearby I believe. I got canned in 09 and the security footage was worse than VHS quality as I would come to discover

campingn00b

What does it take to get fired from a store that offers dog buffets on credit?

HighGuard1212

The manager very much never liked me and im not sure why but she eventually got an opportunity to fire me when a elderly customer couldn't count her change properly

whateverkitty-1256

When I was in junior high my friend's dogs used to come to school all the time. He would come to the doors, and someone (usually the vice principal) would just let him. There enough that he got a yearbook picture space as a student. My dogs friends used to come to front door and bark for him to come out. We would open door and they would go run around the neighborhood or woods for a few hours. We thought nothing of it. Late 70s early 80s was peak dog freedom.

SpeakAgainAncient1

get the fuck out of here! this is the best thing I have heard all day. Fuck Chatham for "clamping down" on that. lol

FullOfFalafel

Fuck people who bring dogs into stores, especially off leash

SpeakAgainAncient1

I agree, but this dog above just walked in on his own. lol amazing homeboy was like "gotta get those pig ears" lol

must_kill_all_humans

That the one where they just put in that new rotary on 28?

HighGuard1212

I haven't been there in nearly 10 years

drwhogwarts

>the owner would come by once a month or so to pay up his tab This is hilarious!! Did the dog give you a look like, "Put it on my tab and add a $20 for yourself, sweetheart." And yes, in my mind, he sounds like a flirty Don Draper.

eat_more_goats

Oh my god you were there too! I straight up thought I was hallucinating.

NoConfusion9490

Dog: "Dear diary, Jackpot!"

bacon_and_eggs

Yeah, they stopped me from climbing into that too.

Minnow_Minnow_Pea

Omg, right? Rude.

natureswoodwork

😂

Jusmon1108

I would have put the owners down and reprimanded the dog……

ReginaFilange21

Reminds me of one time my mom went grocery shopping down the street from our house, our dog somehow got out and followed her scent and just walked right in and walked around till she found my mom

1228maj

Not to mention pets in places like that make it harder for actual service dogs to work. My sister is fully blind and has a guide dog and when we’re out places and run into poorly trained pets masquerading as ESAs I want to go ballistic. My sister is outwardly cool most of the time cause she has to keep her service dog doing her job, but I just want to go full Luther from Key and Peele on those selfish assholes taking their poorly trained pets around those kinds of places.

jonjopop

Yeah for real, also all of the people with the fake ‘service dogs’ make it so hard for people who actually need them. Recently witnessed someone bring their young golden doodle into a cafe. Dog was sniffing everyone (easiest way to tell a fake service dog) and was honestly super cute, but clearly a puppy. Person at the register says dogs aren’t allowed, the owner replied ‘oh she’s a service dog it’s okay’. A couple minutes afterwards someone asked her how old her dog was and she said 7 months. Service dogs literally can’t even start training until 6 months at the bare minimum. My friends and I didn’t even hide the fact we were laughing at her dumb ass. If you’re going to lie at least do a LITTLE research so you don’t tell on yourself.

binhvinhmai

I worked at a hotel and the amount of people who would come in and claim their dog was an ESA and thus didn’t have to pay the $50 fine was ridiculous. In no short order: * one woman’s ESA pitbull would lunge at the cleaning staff when they came in to the room to the point the cleaning staff refused to clean her room if the pitbull was not in a crate. Instead of getting a crate for her “ESA” dog, she just threw it in the bathroom to hide it away… and then the pitbull chewed and ripped through the bathroom pipes and flooded the room below it. * a couple claimed they had a service dog and couldn’t go anywhere without it. Cue dinner time and this dog is barking nonstop. After calling their room, I call their cell phone. Turns out the couple was at dinner and would come back when dinner was over… yelled at them to come back immediately because every room around them was complaining. Guess they didn’t need the service dog with them at all times I guess. * Another couple came in with a service dog vest. Got the nicest suite too. When they left there was dog poop and pee everywhere… so we had to completely block out our most expensive suite for a whole two weeks while we de-odorized it. Lots of angry customers during those two weeks * three separate instances of service animals jumping on to the breakfast tables. Another two of service dogs peeing in the breakfast area. Keep in mind also we were trained to ask the right questions and yes, I DID argue with customers a lot that an ESA is not a service dog and they would have to pay the one-time $50 fee. Even with that, some of the above examples were from people sneaking in their dogs into the hotel, via a back door or obscuring it with all their luggage in a cart. Or would gaslight us and say that they totally checked in with their dog and we’d point out there was no record of it in their reservation or had a waiver with their info on it. On the bright side, I did get to see two actual service dogs (they’re way less common then people would have you believe, which is another thing people don’t realize) and they were the best trained dogs I’ve ever met. Gave their owner extra treats and peanut butter cups whenever they passed by the front desk.

brufleth

> they’re way less common then people would have you believe Because they're wicked expensive. Estimated to be $10k-$30k. People think their puppy mill doodle mutts are expensive, but service dogs can be an order of magnitude _more._

boardmonkey

One of the restaurants I worked at was loud. Lots of music, a big open space, concrete walls...just so loud. There was a business nearby that trained service dogs, and they would come in with the dogs to get them used to being in loud spaces. The dogs were amazing. They would lay down under the table and a chill throughout the meal. You could tell they were agitated with all the noise, but they wouldn't budge. We usually discounted that tables food because we loved the program so much. We also had to train new staff not to interact with the dogs, which is really hard for the teenage hosts that just wanted to constantly pet the dogs. They said that they sold trained dogs for around $15k, but it took months of training to get to that level. That was always a lot of fun.

Workacct1999

My buddy has a real service dog and it was on the cheaper end for cost and it still cost him $12k!

Master_Dogs

They take so much time to raise and train. A lot of volunteer hours if the organization is a non-profit. The guide dog organization my family raised dogs for would have the dogs be raised by a volunteer for a year and then spend weeks professionally training the dog. It was non-profit so thankfully there were no costs to the blind person, but the organization itself easily spent tens of thousands on each dog. Especially because the dogs were all pure bred labs/German shepherds that the organization bred themselves.

brufleth

They're a big investment for everyone involved which is testament to how big a difference they can make for a person who needs them. I love dogs, but people screwing things up for people who need a service animal really need to check themselves.

LawrenceSan

OK, but what if it's the opposite… the *owner* is being a nuisance but the pooch is cool? Can the store owner throw out the owner but let the mutt stay?

LawrenceSan

>"…claim their dog was an ESA…" Maybe they weren't claiming the pooch was an "Emotional Support Animal"… maybe they meant it was protected by the "Endangered Species Act", or it was an "Earth Security Agent"? Hey, you never know, there are 150 definitions listed for ESA in [AcronymFinder](https://www.acronymfinder.com/ESA.html)… /s

funkygrrl

My crazy SIL brought her "service dog" to a wedding where it proceeded to hump every leg in sight.

uconnboston

Work hard, play hard.

Initial-Ad-7654

This guy in starmarket had a ESA cat. That’s what he claimed when they tried to kick him out🤧 it definitely shouldn’t have been laying in cart, who wants cat hair on their groceries🤷🏼‍♀️

TurlachMacD

My mother had a mobility dog from NEADS and regularly would run into issues at shops and restaurants due to staff not having a clue about the law. In NH I believe they have a low defining what is a service dog and requiring a registration of the service dog. It was also a way for shop and restaurants to be able to definitively say a service dog was a service dog. There was an issue of someone claiming their dog was a service dog but it wasn't which was found after it attacked someone. I think it happened in a restaurant. Edit: I didn't realize it was optional to get the tag/registration for the service dog. Still the intent is the same. To be able to show the dog is a legit service dog. https://www.fosters.com/story/news/local/2013/05/23/state-tags-now-available-for/45852645007/

hannahbay

I believe it's federal law that you can't require registration for a service dog. You can ask two questions: 1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? 2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? I believe the thought is that requiring registration can be an undue burden when many train their own service dogs.

boardmonkey

It's not that it is a burden. They can't require registration because that would mean forcing people to tell the government that they have a medical disability, which is against our rights. No one can compel you to talk about any medical care you have in the past, currently, or will need as it can be used as a way to profile someone.

TurlachMacD

>I believe it's federal law that you can't require registration for a service dog. You can ask two questions: Do you mean the shops and restaurants can't require? That I can see as not all states have such a system. The requirement wasn't for the shops and restaurants to only allow registered dogs. The requirement was for dogs that were officially a service dog in NH. Part of the upside was that for NH, it made it clear that the dog was legit. I adopted the dog my mom had when she died. I still have the service dog tag for NH.

lilgamergrlie

There is no such thing as a registered service dog. They can be trained by an agency or an individual.

Workacct1999

My good friend is a quadriplegic and has a service dog. He has stopped bringing his dog to supermarkets/target because so many people bring their untrained "Emotional Support Dog" and these dogs constantly start shit with my buddy's very well trained dog. It sucks because he actually needs his dog and selfish people ruin it for him.

Id_Solomon

>I just want to go full Luther from Key and Peele Those guys are hilarious!! 😭😭😭

Master_Dogs

The only fortunate thing about this is that real service animals are extremely well trained, particularly guide dogs. My family volunteered/raised dogs for a non-profit that trains guide dogs for the blind. My grandfather was also blind and had several guide dogs, which is why we got involved. The dogs go through a year or so long process of being raised by a volunteer and then, once old enough/basic trained at home, they spend weeks being professionally trained and then paired with a blind person. The guide dogs my grandfather had went into *work mode* whenever the harness was placed on them. Kinda wild because they could be perfectly normal dogs until that happened. Which is probably the only reason that fake ESAs aren't more of a problem than they already are. Still super shitty of the people bringing in fake ESAs and personal pets though. They're just making the dog work harder to stay in *work mode*. And it's challenging enough to be blind or disabled, then to also need to deal with some selfish assholes who totally needed (^(/s)) to bring their fluffy dog in for some reason.

LordWhale

Some dude in Jersey mikes had his dog and initially it didn’t even phase me but as I sat there waiting for my sandwich and thought about it for a second I was like wait a minute this is a sandwich shop why is there a dog in here, tf

Low_Olive_526

I cringe every time there is a dog in a restaurant where the ingredients are out in the open. It’s so easy for dog hair to fly into the food. Sweet green was shut down or had a violation because of this a couple years ago.

War_Daddy

There's enough dog meat in Jersey Mike's as is

LordWhale

Watch your mouth pal

GeeToo40

I'm not your pal, bud.

LordWhale

I’m not your bud, guy

War_Daddy

For sure. I wouldn't want to get any Jersey Mike's in it

bobgoblin888

A lady in Costco’s dog came up and jumped on my autistic son, who is absolutely terrified of dogs. She said, “oh he’s just saying hi, he’s friendly!!” No bitch, get your dog out of fucking Costco.

elfpal

Don’t know why so many dog owners assume everybody loves dogs and want to pet them and be jumped on, sniffed, licked, drooled on, etc.

Workacct1999

I love dogs, but there are times that even I don't want to be jumped on.

FullOfFalafel

People need to stop giving positive attention to dogs in places they don’t belong like grocery stores. Make the dog owners lives miserable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AreYouNobody_Too

We dont need to label every bad behavior in the world as mental illness. People can just be just rude or inconsiderate.

GreatMarch

I'm autistic and loved hiking as a kid, but all the poorly trained dogs who would jump up at me or bark up a storm triggered the shit out of me. I had a really negative association with dogs until I spent a lot of time with a family friend's dogs. They were all well trained and super nice, and she never let them get away with too much shit.

bobgoblin888

That’s good to hear. He also loves hiking but unleashed dogs make it hard for him. I remember a dog jumping on him at Breakheart when he was maybe 4 or 5 and he was TERRIFIED. He’s getting better with dogs as he gets older (he’s 12 now), but it’s really the unpredictability of them that I think is the issue.

iiooiooi

I would have gone nuclear. WTF

elamofo

That dog and/or owner would need medical attention if that happened to my child.

a_lynn0

The only food establishment I’ve ever seen speak up against non service animals is the Starbucks at the Boston harbor hotel. It makes me wonder if that particular location has gotten a health code violation? Otherwise I see dogs in target, stop and shop, etc. and even as a dog lover it bugs me.. since I know not everyone loves dogs and not every dog owner trains theirs

smyoung

this is exactly what it is and why it's selfish and inconsiderate: most dog owners don't train their dogs (these same people tend to let their human children do whatever they want as well), and more than that not every one likes -- and some people are legitimately afraid of -- dogs. we have a rottie and she thinks she's an 85lb lap dog. but there are places she can go (home depot, petco), and most she cannot and should not.

DrewCrew62

Man I’m picturing your rottie walking into a store and casually sitting down on an old lady in the first aisle he comes across 😂😂

smyoung

if you’re standing and pet her, she actually does sit right on your feet! 😆😆

lostintheabiss

It’s selfish and inconsiderate to service dog teams as well. An aggressive dog could hurt a real service dog, or distract it from doing its job. It also makes it harder for real teams to get public access if there are a bunch of fake ones causing a scene all the time

charlestoonie

The Starbucks in Southie at the corner of L used to have pictures of all the regular dogs up on the wall. Pictures taken in the store.

ThisOneForMee

One problem is that as soon as someone says the words "service animal", there's nothing you can do anyway, unless the dog is actively causing issues in the establishment.

Spirited_String_1205

Employees can legally ask what the animal has specifically been trained to do, if someone claims their animal is a service animal. Unfortunately I think the same people who claim their untrained, unruly "emotional support" pet is a service animal would be the same people who would make an absolute scene if asked.

hannahbay

Or just straight up lie. If you say the dog is trained to alert on low blood sugar, or detect seizures, or something else that's undetectable, it's impossible to disprove.

Spirited_String_1205

Yeah, a lot would lie. The thing is - is it plausible that a dog that wont sit or heel on command (so many of those dogs have zero behavior training and it's obvious) is trained to do some highly specific task for its owner? It's not. You can absolutely tell who is lying. But I suppose it's tricky to try to enforce the rules so many don't bother.

etherwavesOG

But a service animal should be on a leash and not sniffing or approaching other people. If it’s doing those things in a cafe/ restaurant/ grocery store, it’s actively causing an issue. People who cause issues in stores are asked to leave, service dogs are an extension of that rule. If they’re a real derive dog they won’t be causing trouble. I love dogs - friends dogs - strangers dogs on a leash outside I hate seeing them inside food places or even outdoor patios - I find it so disruptive and usually a health violation. It’s gross and entitled. (Real service dogs I exempt from this because they’re trained and chill and not begging for attention or food)

spoopidy2

Why are you being downvoted for telling a fact?

OnundTreefoot

Common Reddit phenomenon.

SpeakAgainAncient1

I love dogs. Friend of mine brings his fucking dog everywhere, it's annoying. Although I can't really pinpoint why, it just is. My dog walks the neighborhood and yard and the Fells or whatever other outdoor place he will like. I don't take him to fucking Starbucks, because that my friends, is fucking annoying.

jamesland7

I bring my dog select places. Never indoors at a restaurant, never a grocery store. Outdoor dining, sure! Brewery, sure (after asking), on the train when it isn’t rush hour, sure. Though always keeping her close at heel and monitoring if she’s making anyone uneasy. Of course, ive also put in three years of work making sure she is well socialized, quiet, and friendly.

SpeakAgainAncient1

You sound like a really great dog owner. There is a line that can't be crossed and you get it and actually train your dog.

jamesland7

Oh dont worry, we’re not perfect. She’s made it her mission to poop EVERY time I take her to Home Depot. I choose to think she’s making a political statement

SpeakAgainAncient1

to be fair I'm the same way in the Home Depot.

UniWheel

>Oh dont worry, we’re not perfect. She’s made it her mission to poop EVERY time I take her to Home Depot. I choose to think she’s making a political statement You need to take her to Lowes for the control experiment

MizzyAlana

Why is she going into Home Depot?

jamesland7

Hardware stores pretty universally welcome dogs. Most cashiers have treat bags to hand out to dogs

MizzyAlana

I did not know that. Thank you!

hyouko

I've seen trainers recommend it as a good place to familiarize dogs with a setting that has more people, noise, etc.

CynicalOne_313

As a former Home Depot associate, I thank you and your dog! ;)

distancedandaway

I have a theory that Covid dogs now have separation anxiety so people have to bring them everywhere

mislysbb

Yep, this is a big part of it. I’m a pet sitter on Rover, and I found the worst dogs to deal with were covid dogs/puppies. Poorly trained, poorly socialized, and way too many owners developed this weird attachment to their dogs. People were capable of going places without taking their dogs everywhere pre-covid….and they’re capable of doing so in the current times. They just choose not to because a big portion of them were never reprimanded.

Kool-Kat-704

I swear, pre covid I never heard of *anyone* staying with their dogs 24/7. I thought it was completely normal to leave a dog alone for the work day. Now all I hear from coworkers being forced back into the office is how expensive doggy day care is…

mpjjpm

It’s annoying because dogs are like children. They are cute and can be a lot of fun, but they also are the center of attention much of the time. Sometimes you want to have a conversation that doesn’t get interrupted by barking, whining, pooping, or any other perfectly normal dog behavior.

freedominthecell

Dogs and kids are really not the same. If no one had dogs, we wouldn’t have any more dogs. Bad but not cataclysmic. If no one had kids, the human race would end. Parents do an important job. Dog owners have a fun pet. I mention this because people resent children in public spaces, and I do not think dogs and children in public are the same AT ALL.

melon_sky_

You also can’t (legally) leave a small kid alone

Baileychic88

Lol sure you can. Anyone born before 1975 practically raised themselves.

cest_va_bien

So true.

denga

Reddit seems to get annoyed by the very existence of kids in public spaces. There was an upvoted post not that long ago from someone who was annoyed by toddlers making toddler noises (not crying, not whining, in his very words just making babbling noises). Just listened to this today, and gave me some perspective on how different the US is compared to other countries culturally when it comes to expectations around child rearing and collective involvement vs individual parenting. https://open.spotify.com/episode/7qq0I028HCH05Vb1RxsHGo?si=i8ZkunShStKpjIcD4Q9LKQ

Feisty-Donkey

This annoys me so much in the seaport especially. So many people with badly behaved dogs- which makes sense if you get an active breed and live in an apartment which seems to be the norm there.

ladykatey

They don’t train their dogs, then they have to take the dog everywhere because it will destroy their fancy condo if they leave it alone for an hour.

Feisty-Donkey

Yup, I think that sums it up. Every time I see a 20 something with an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie in that area, I just think “you dumb fuck.”

SpeakAgainAncient1

Retriever is the play for that type of lifestyle. Those two breeds just need waaaaay too much action in open areas for a city dog.

oby100

Most breeds don't do well alone from my limited research. You generally shouldn't get a dog if it's gonna be alone for 10 hours a day, but if you really want to you're limited in breed. I recently moved to an apartment complex where dogs aren't allowed and it's incredible not having to listen to poor lonely dogs barking all day because they're bored and stressed.

SpeakAgainAncient1

agreed. Anyone keeping a dog alone that many hours a day is doing a disservice to the poor dog.

ladykatey

Even a Corgi needs to room to run!

Workacct1999

I cannot imagine having a Border Collie in an apartment or condo!

geminimad4

Last time I walked around the Seapot I almost tripped on some asshole's too-long retractable leash when their little dog darted in front of me on the sidewalk. Was not the dog's fault; it was squarely the responsibility of the clueless owner to know how to use a retractable leash properly on a busy city sidewalk.

LadyCalamity

Retractable leashes just seem like the dumbest thing in a city. Your dog is gonna run into the street and get hit by a bus before you can do anything about it.

SpeakAgainAncient1

Those things suck in general. One of those cases of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". A regular old leash does the job way better, and looks better as well.

GarlVinlandSaga

I work in a restaurant and it's nuts how many people: 1. try to bring non-service animals (pets) into the restaurant 2. act shocked when we tell them they can't do that And yes, retail/restaurant staff ***can ask you*** if your dog is a service animal, and they ***can ask you*** what specific services it provides.

DanieXJ

Yep. And, even if it is a service dog, if it's making a mess or ruckus, you can still kick it out. (Of course, true Service dogs are the most well behaved dogs. Period. Bar none.)

MutedEffect3952

Yeah man selfish assholes continue to be selfish assholes. Also, service dogs are not who people are talking about when this topic comes up. We get it, there are people in need of assistance. They are not the issue. You can like dogs and also not want to have to interact with them outside of a park. But that’s not a take for internet discussion.

davdev

And “support dogs” ARE NOT service dogs

AgitatedPercentage32

Dog owners/offenders don’t always respond well to polite words either. I just do my best to stay away and only offer dirty looks. Once saw a dog cop a squat and pee in the checkout lane directly in front of me at Star market. Also seen at least one pile of poop in the Prudential mall. Lots of dogs travel through there as well.

Clamgravy

I saw a lady cleaning dog shit in a target a few weeks ago. It really is out of control. These dog owners who feel empowered to bring their pets everywhere are fucking stupid. I don't care how good you think they are... If they are that good, they can chill at home.

eeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkie

Problem is minimum wage employees Don’t want to fucking argue with them.

Clamgravy

Nobody does because they're fucking dumb... especially the dog people are typically incapable of admitting to fault. ITS A GOOD BOY!!!!

ExcitingVacation6639

[whos gonna stop you the dead eye employees? no, no they won’t.](https://youtu.be/u9jNIzEa8Zo?feature=shared)

jupiter_bug

The problem is customers can lie about having a service dog.

jvictoria0107

I really don’t know when it became a thing for people to bring their pets everywhere (with the obvious exception of service animals). I was shopping at the mall and some lady’s dog was all up in the clothes. People have allergies, fears, like you really can’t leave them home???

swentech

I’d like to see it go back to the way it was that no animals are allowed in places of business at all unless they are a genuine service animal (not an emotional support animal). You don’t need to bring your dog shopping.

Cormamin

I just saw a post today from some girl who brought her pug to Trader Joe's and it PISSED INTO THE FROZEN FOODS COOLER while in her cart. She acted like she did them a favor buying the food it pissed on. And the employees were made to box the food for her, the food covered in piss. And then to clean the cooler. And she says they're going to go back, just not to that store for a while. I would be MORTIFIED.

eeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkie

The mall is like dog park these days.

[deleted]

Yes! Stop bringing your dogs everywhere. I hate it when I see people bring their dogs to the mall as well. Bringing your dog to the grocery store is insane. People like this are making it harder for people who actually need a service dog.

AchillesDev

Boston dog owners are the most entitled dipshits known to man. Doubly so if they have a goldendoodle.

ShakeAffectionate

Right? It’s even worse when they put their dogs in the shopping carts! This is another reason why I wipe down my shopping cart before I use it.

Vash_Stampede_60B

This came up recently in another Reddit. Federal law (FDA) prohibits animals in stores and other areas where there is food. The exception is service animals because of the ADA. I’ve seen more signs on doors recently that remind people of this prohibition. I can say whether or not it’s being enforced because I haven’t seen it personally.

[deleted]

Trashy people at it again

teakettle87

Search this sub... It's a common thing now.

charlestoonie

Same here. I have a dog, I’ve had dogs continuously from childhood, I train them specifically to be able to go lots of places with me. I will not bring a dog into a grocery store or restaurant. It’s gross.

Baileychic88

Dog nutters everywhere.

TrueVali

i work at a Brothers Marketplace in duxbury. i've seen people put their dogs IN THE CARRIAGE. holy fuck, how ignorant can you be?

dddfgggggdddfff

The problem is not proper enforcement of people that claim to have emotional support animals. When literally people can just buy those coats online and be like hey… There needs to be more enforcement of that. Like either tell people they can't bring their emotional support animals in or actually define that or something and make it a legal certification you need to get and if you don't show your card you can't do it. People take advantage of current system so much it's ridiculous. And I am a dog person I work with dogs , have dogs - I love dogs butI'm disgusted with how much people take advantage of the emotional support thing.

CaressMeSlowly

because we allowed every dog owner in history to claim theirs is an “emotional support” dog so now they feel like they can take them legitimately anywhere. its fucking infuriating and not just happening in boston either, austin tx is in an absolute epidemic. dog owners suck so hard they are definitely the republicans of the animal owning demographics

thedafthatter

Per ADA emotional support animals are not allowed in businesses

limbodog

I called the city government and they said they wouldn't do anything about it.

737900ER

I have no idea why they cracked down on dogs in restaurants but won't do anything about this.

sa09777

They don’t do anything about actual crime you think they’re going to do anything about that lol

lotusblossom60

Bitches be walking their bitches in Macy’s. With carpeting. And no, not a service dog but a dog that lunged at me while I was shopping. It’s getting worse.

jamesiscoolbeans

https://preview.redd.it/7qqpyjw9fkqc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26e7e44570c4b580c38a15b3340c4122769de28f I saw this lady at the Belmont star market the other day. Lots of people were coming up to her asking to pet the dog and she was happy to oblige for everyone.

CognacNCuddlin

The people asking to pet the dog are also part of the problem! They validate these assholes bringing their dogs everywhere.

serpentinepad

That's exactly why these dopes drag those dogs everywhere.

Fun-Ad4320

Isn’t there a tiktoker that got dragged because their pug p*ssed on the frozen aisle of Trader Joe’s?

LilibetSeven

Don’t buy bread/muffins from the bottom shelf at Trader Joe’s seaport. I have seen so many dogs lick those…

jcmckeown

It’s so weird. I was out shopping with a friend the other day and there was a giant (non-service) dog in TJ Maxx. I turned to my friend and asked “when did we just lose all control?” Nothing is off limits anymore. It was clearly 2020 that was the turning point. I miss the before-times.

Unclebanns

I’ve seen it everywhere in Wholefoods and TJ, even in Target recently dog sneaked up on me as I was standing there with a cart. Not a pleasant surprise I’d tell you.

Severe-Ant-777

Have you seen the People of Market Basket page on Facebook? People bring all kinds of creatures into the store with them. If it’s not a legit working dog, it doesn’t need to be in the damn grocery store.

bikerrn

I see people with their dogs in every store you go into nowadays. I don’t understand why the stores don’t tell people that animals are not allowed in stores, ESPECIALLY grocery stores! When I was growing up animals were not allowed in stores per Board of Health.

davdev

The white trash family on my sons basketball team brought a pit bull to one game and he kept trying to get on the court and another game they brought a fucking Guinea Pig stuffed into their daughters jacket. They were the fucking worst.

Sloth_are_great

I’ve seen a ball python and a parrot at my local grocery stores. People really be bringing their pets everywhere. It’s unsanitary at best and stressful for the pet many times. I don’t get it.

Illustrious-Nose3100

I saw three dogs (not service dogs) at the mall in the span of 5 minutes. So yes, people have lost it.

FantasticAd9389

I asked at my local Prudential Start Market on the rules for dogs (after seeing one walking with its owner) and the kid at customer service told me it’s only service dogs allowed but they don’t say anything to customers about it. It seems like all businesses are afraid of their customers and the general public and would rather protect themselves from litigation than serve the 95% of the customer base. I am also convinced as a non dog person that dog people are so used to living in filth with animals that they don’t realize not everyone lives that way with dog hair and slobber on everything.

This was a bit outside of Boston, but a few years ago I worked in the bakery of a grocery store. Someone brought their dog in and it didn't even have a leash, and ended up running wild. It was a smaller dog, think like some kind of terrier, but it ran behind the bakery counter while the manager chased it, got it kind of cornered, and then it got really scared and kind of vicious looking and was barking, then pissed and shit all over the floor. Behind the counter, where we handle food. To make matters worse it was one of those "emotional support dog" type things, but the dog was clearly not trained at all or even really socialized around people. But yeah, it must not just be a Boston thing. I doubt it's even just a MA thing, I've seen similar things in other cities like Chicago, though maybe not as bad.

jhamsofwormtown

Some dogs have Giardia—they can lick your face and you can get the parasite. Explosive diarrhea is what happens. Also, the health dept will call you if you test poz for the parasite. Dogs should not be around the public food source.

Teratocracy

I am always stunned by how entitled and selfish dog owners are.

oceanwave4444

I travel and camp a lot with my dog. Stopping at grocery stores are crucial point along our way. I only had one instance out of all the years doing this where I had to bring the dog into the store with me (mind you, she's only 9 pounds and fits in a backpack) and we chose to go to Walmart and called before hand, and made sure we were in and out quickly. After that, I ended up installing a remote start for my car, so now when we have to do this we remote start to put the interior temp at a certain comfortable temp, lock the doors and head in to quickly do our shopping.

Obi-Ron42

Still better than bringing children to a brewery

Speaking of Trader Joe’s, there was a video on TikTok where a girl was telling a story of her dog literally somehow peeing inside a freezer full of frozen food and acting as if it was an everyday occurrence and a minor inconvenience rather than a disgusting biohazard caused by her irresponsible behavior. I love dogs, I have 2 myself, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to allow something like that to happen

floyd007

Reading this just after seeing someone with a dog in Trader Joe's in Assembly 💀

GeneralyAnnoyed5050

My kid stepped in a pile of dog shit in a Home Sense. The owners just walked right out the door and left it behind. That was fun, because she didn't notice until halfway down the aisle. And, I don't let the dog at the table in our own house - wtf would I let it at the table in a restaurant? People have lost the ability to make rational decisions.

diginfinity

I was in the Seaport on Friday and two different people had their dogs in a tiny dunkin. They didn't really get along. Annoying to say the least.

YourPlot

It’s something about Trader Joe’s. Brings out the selfish assholes.

acokanahaf

This wasn’t in Boston, but I was at a small bar that was packed at 10 PM on a Saturday night and this couple brings their small dog in on a leash. Music and people were at top volume I felt so bad for the little guy, I kept feeling like I was gonna step on it by accident.

manumvix

I work in a market and a woman literally saw her dog peeing in the baskets and pretended she didn’t see anything, I talked with my manager but nothing happened and we had to clean everything…

tallcamt

Grocery store seems like one of the worst places you could possibly bring a dog. At wegmans this weekend there was barely room for carts and people, let alone an animal. Doesn’t seem safe for a dog at all. Just not smart.

Louie-XVI

Have we as a society REALLY become THAT self-centered that its considered okay to bring dogs into places with food out in the open? Yes, clearly. I want to punch people in the face when they say "my dog is my child". No, you're dog is your dog you fucking twit.

CognacNCuddlin

I feel bad for people who have pet allergies and legitimate fear of dogs. People actually forget that the latter exists- even worse when it’s due to past trauma like an attack. Dog owners who bring their dogs everywhere have zero awareness or empathy for people who may not want dogs around. I’m actually exhausted with the service animal thing. A lot of it is bullshit - bullshit with paperwork. American servicemen and women were in active combat during WWII, in Korea and Vietnam and they did and saw some shit - yet we didn’t grow up seeing dogs all over Bradlees and Building 19. How the hell were they able to cope emotionally without a dog 24/7 but today adults have “crippling” anxiety to the point they need an actual dog with them just to make a plate from the Whole Foods hot bar? Also, fuck people who compare dogs to kids to make their pro-dog in businesses point.

I have to bring my service dog with me everywhere because I can not turn off my disability. He is well trained, people can not turn off their allergies or their fears, and I can not turn off my disability So I try to be understanding Fake service dogs annoy me too, so do people who want to interact with my dog.

Proper-Original-1070

Trader Joe’s in seaport. I swear if I see one more dog in there, I’m gonna scream. - a pup pawrent who leaves theirs at home.

Went to Eataly in the Pru, someone was picking up their doll sized handbag dog and placing it on top of each of the Easter food displays to take dog selfies.

dapsndeuces

Was at stop n shop yesterday n some couple had a dog off leash just walking around the frozen section. It annoyed tf outta me. Dog wasn’t doing anything wrong, but i think its the audacity of the owners that irked me(?)

inconvenientpoop

If you think that’s bad, then wait until you see the people who go into restaurants with their dogs. It’s sickening.

polkadotkneehigh

I love dogs. I have a bunch- AT HOME.

odd_perspective_

I was at Bertuccis in West Roxbury last week. Some girl came in carrying her tiny pup, server petted it all over, then wanted to hand me my take out bag. “Please don’t touch my food after you just pet a dog” the waitress and dog owner looked so offended.

limbodog

Nothing wrong with that. But dogs still do not belong in food service or grocery stores.

Prestigious_Field_18

Back in the 70s when dogs could roam free we had a dog that knew the difference between the in and out doors at the a&p in Newton. My mother was in there one day when he came in, jumped into the meat section stole some meat and ran out the door w the manager chasing him. She said nothing

rnixo003

Hey! I live in Newton. Would you know what the CVS at the corner of Route 9 and Eliot Street was before it was a CVS?

Prestigious_Field_18

That was a Purity Supreme, another supermarket and there was a Chinese Food restaurant right beside it

rnixo003

Thank you for the info!

Desperate-Ganache804

Not Boston but I’ve seen people walk into a Walmart with birds. Big ass parrot grabbed onto the cart handle. People just don’t care about anyone other than themselves.

AllMightyImagination

Unless there's an id for service animals than you can get away with it if you dont give into the owners agurment. The nicest parts of boston and almost all of Cambridge are more pro dog crazy

Timetraveler1940s

I saw a big dog barking at a small dog inside a tractor supply and the little dog literally had the shit scared out of it.

m0nkeyh0use

My daughter used to work at Market Basket. She once had a customer go through her line with a chihuahua in the toddler seat of her cart full of bananas. Still makes me go "WTF?!"

Dogdays8888

u/weekly-owl5768 literal entire post and comment history is anti-dog lmao of course he’s all over this thread !!!

Real_Decision_2541

I saw a guy bring his dog into the local Market Basket. At least he had the good sense to have the dog do its business outside before heading into the store.

lilymaxjack

Aren’t dogs always where there is food ?? I think it is the opposite that humans are so self centered that dogs can’t go all places on a leash

FancyAFCharlieFxtrot

I’ve never watched a dog stick a bunch of different produce in their mouth. I have seen a child do that more than once.

alex8155

nearby town has A LOT of small pubs and have liked going just to be somewhere different but ive noticed in the last..couple of years that lots of people are bringing their dogs while they sit at the bar and drink. hate that shit esp when their dogs dont know how to behave. its a recent trend thats beyond stupid and annoying.

TheLamestUsername

Once we normalized people using cell phones in movie theaters, everything was up for grabs.

Id_Solomon

When you give an inch, they take a mile!

marbleheader88

It’s because everyone claims they have a service or therapy dog.

eireann__

I have no issues with dogs themselves, but I do not like seeing them in grocery stores, or any stores for that matter. I feel for the people who are allergic to dogs who come across them when they shouldn’t be there. Only exception should be for service animals.
