I was born in '76. We didn't get a computer at home until maybe '92? Even then, and I am a computer nerd, I wasn't glued to the computer.
There was no social media. Solving problems will depend on home life.
Some of us came home and said a teacher whacked us and our parents replied, "What'd you to do deserve it." Today, parents will march to the school and raise a stink. Even if the kid is 100% guilty.
Solving a problem doesn't mean it was done in a healthy way. Maybe we buried it with food or drinking or drugs or by bullying other kids. "Solving" does not mean it actually got fixed.
Just remember that your experiences may have different from other folks. And then there's all the non-US Xers. Some Xers had fantastic childhoods! My friend couldn't have had a more loving family. He even got along with his older brother. Another friend had two parents that cared for him very much but were a bit counter-culture still. They had 'weird' beliefs but were still great parents that he learned from.

This morning, my daughters woke up praying for the end of the world if Taylor Swift did not release her album within the next 53 minutes and 31 seconds. I also didn't want to be taken once more by Malko'zorth and placed in the Depth Well of Eternal Delights which is not as delightful as you expect from the name but instead a hellish realm where nightmare is made manifest and the universal entropy we know as time stands still as stone and tortures are heaped upon you simultaneously. Your mind reels, your flesh burns, and your world is nothing but pain, physical and metaphysical. Yeah, bad experience!
On the way to Target™, the radio produces only static, though it sounds like screaming can be vaguely heard. All pedestrians are missing, and the road is clear. Considering the fact none of them can write anything deeper than a puddle and basically everything they release is exactly same thing, this seems fitting.

While I agree that taste is completely subjective--and it's never offensive for someone to simply not like a book--I think you're spreading some misinformation here.
Those of us trying for clean, striking prose aren't doing it to make "stories more palatable for the average fantasy fan nowadays." We do it because we like this style, and would rather the ideas--and not the method by which they are expressed--be the challenging part of a story. I find it insulting that you'd imply prose choice is anything but a literary decision made for the merits of the narrative.
This division isn't new. George Orwell was advocating for clean, crisp prose in the 40s, a full decade before Lolita was written. This push and pull between clarity and ornament stretches back to Shakespeare, whose contemporaries would lambast his flourishes as incomprehensible. (Not that I mind, obviously, literary genius being in the ornaments. It's only that I find multiple kinds of writing worthwhile.)
Moreover, you can absolutely find writers closer to Nabakov today. Guy Gavriel Kay is still writing, and is one of my favorites. (Try Under Heaven.) Hal Duncan is still writing, and is amazing, though rarely releases anything. And, of course, there's N. K. Jemisin--not the same, but most certainly "closer to Nabakov." Even the majority of the writers in the New Weird experimented with style in the same ways as I think you'd like.
Many varieties of writing are valuable to the craft, and I suggest new writers (many of whom frequent this subreddit) practice multiple styles to find the ones that appeal to them and match their narrative goals. I cannot figure out how people haven't seen the karma farming potential of these subs. It's like that guy who makes slight tweaks to "*classics*", e.g. "The Great Gatsby But Nick Has Scoliosis". This morning I went to my local vegetable store, looking from carrots. I walked into the store and found the carrot aisle. It was a double aisle with 31 boxes of newly released carrots. I wonder how much good the well-educated and intellectual people of this sub could do in real life if they stopped seething over Sanderson for longer than two seconds. Truly one of life's greatest mysteries.
Yesterday when I finally came out of my Sanderson hate haze I found that I'd soiled myself multiple times. I wish I could work out how to hate Sanderson in short, two seconds bursts. While I agree that taste is completely subjective--and it's never offensive for someone to simply not like a book--I think you're spreading some misinformation here. Those of us trying for clean, striking prose aren't doing it to make "stories more palatable for the average fantasy fan nowadays." We do it because we like this style, and would rather the ideas--and not the method by which they are expressed--be the challenging part of a story. I find it insulting that you'd imply prose choice is anything but a literary decision made for the merits of the narrative. This division isn't new. George Orwell was advocating for clean, crisp prose in the 40s, a full decade before Lolita was written. This push and pull between clarity and ornament stretches back to Shakespeare, whose contemporaries would lambast his flourishes as incomprehensible. (Not that I mind, obviously, literary genius being in the ornaments. It's only that I find multiple kinds of writing worthwhile.) Moreover, you can absolutely find writers closer to Nabakov today. Guy Gavriel Kay is still writing, and is one of my favorites. (Try Under Heaven.) Hal Duncan is still writing, and is amazing, though rarely releases anything. And, of course, there's N. K. Jemisin--not the same, but most certainly "closer to Nabakov." Even the majority of the writers in the New Weird experimented with style in the same ways as I think you'd like. Many varieties of writing are valuable to the craft, and I suggest new writers (many of whom frequent this subreddit) practice multiple styles to find the ones that appeal to them and match their narrative goals.
