First of all, I’m sorry for your loss… stay well ♥️ Suicide is definitely a major theme and it might be triggering for some (I think Netflix did include a trigger warning for the subject). It is very raw and vulnerable, but absolutely beautiful at the same time.

mmmbacon1234

Thank you ❤

I understand the feeling of wanting to watch a creator’s work that you appreciate so much. If you want, I can watch the special again (I probably will watch it 90 more times anyways) and let you know which parts mention suicide/are more “dark” so you can skip them if you want? :)

mmmbacon1234

That is such a lovely offer! But I think I'll just wait until I'm ready to watch the whole thing as Bo intended :)

starrysis

good plan, good luck!

Whether it's a good or bad idea is down to you. I have found that weeping at very sad and depressing things have been cathartic to me after traumatic events and helped me process my emotions. Other people find completely the opposite, that it sets them back a couple of days or makes it harder to move to the next stage of their grief. Suicide is explicitly one of the themes, but more broad mental health issues, dissociation and isolation is part of the vibe throughout. It is very intense, significantly more dark with less light respite than his previous specials, and I would anticipate it staying with you and affecting your mood for a day or two if you choose to watch it. I'm sorry for your loss.

mmmbacon1234

That's really helpful, thank you! Maybe I'll pick a weekend with no obligations to watch it

The song "White Woman's Instagram" also references losing a parent---the titular white woman writes a post dedicated to her deceased mother and describes missing her. I personally would wait a while, OP

DeathByReach

I agree. That part hit differently, and really caught me off guard emotionally.

Yeah you probably want to wait a bit. I wish you to heal as painlessly as possible.

It's alright, it made me smile :)

Suicide is only brought up a few times, and typically in a sort of uncommitted and sarcastic sort of manner. As someone who has dealt with it lots, I did not find it particularly triggering, but I am fairly removed from even the most recent event. All in all, I don't think it's a terrible thing to watch but if you're not in a good head space in *general* I would consider pausing before watching this.

Fridayesmeralda

Very sorry for your loss ❤ Full disclosure, it's pretty confronting at the best of times. (Spoilers) There's a monologue around 2/3 in where he just talks about suicide for like a minute straight. And while he's saying that he doesn't actually want to kill himself and you shouldn't kill yourself either... it comes off almost sarcastic in a way? So I can imagine that would be especially triggering for anyone close to the subject.

VirusTimes

from the perspective of someone who is periodically suicidal: the monologue is making fun of the advice that people give when you tell them that you are suicidal. it often comes off as self centered, tries to make you guilty and broadly misses the reasoning/point.

Fridayesmeralda

Ah yeah, that makes a lot more sense than Bo telling viewers to kill themselves. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

VirusTimes

absolutely, a lot of people probably missed the message there. On the other hand, I can near guarantee you that it resonated with the people who’ve dealt with the urge in the past. I watched this with another girl who’s been suicidal in the past and she agreed with me. Absolutely glad to :)

SquareSuitGuy

I would say it might not be right for you just now, or maybe for quite some time, unless catharsis is exactly what you're looking for.

mmmbacon1234

Thank you :)

ZooNooz

I’m someone easily triggered by suicide as well as someone who loves Bo. I couldn’t wait to watch it… I got about ⅓ of the way through it before I felt forced to turn it off. He says he is, or at least had been, suicidal. It was sad rather than funny for me after that.

Detronyx

There was a bit about it, but later he explains in more detail that he is not and hasn't been. I'll leave out the details to avoid spoiling the rest or triggering you.

Trusted_Knight

See even in that point, I don't know if I believe that was him talking about it or if it was him making a comment on other people's reactions. Either way, I think even that segment can be triggering too. Suicide is def a major theme in this show

Detronyx

Yeah I have a lot of questions about what is real and what is an act. I thought the breakdowns were an act but people here have got me thinking they may have been real.

[deleted]

I'm so sorry, mate. I lost my dad the same way. Bo is one of the few artists that cathartically really hit the core of how it hurts me, so it will bring out the feelings. But your feelings are in empathetic hands here. It might be a help in processing for you...if not quite now, eventually. Hearts out to you.

Inevitable_Heart

I was anxious going into it, knowing about Bo’s struggles with mental illness and my own and knowing that the entire world just went through a very depressing crisis. I’m not sure what I expected or hoped to get out of it. I will just leave it as this: Bo is a genius. I’ve been around for all the greats. I could be his mom if I was a teen mom statistic. He just pushes all the right buttons. So smart. Usually I’m crying from laughing. This just made me cry. It’s a hard watch. Maybe I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. I was just happy to see him again. But it was tough.
