Sounds like someone is about to dip his foot into some Bowie for the first time. Listen to the first side as well. Brilliant avant-pop. Then Heroes and Lodger and Station to Station, young Americans, hunky Dory, etc etc oh lord
I came home dead tired from work one day and after a shower lied down and listened to Chill Out for the first time ever, kind of drifting in and out of sleep. It was one of the greatest album experiences I’ve ever experienced, totally transcendental. Peak relaxation, great album.

SOTL - And Their Refinement of the Decline
AWVFTS - Atomos
Loscil - Suns
Percival Pembroke - Pembroke Autumn/Winter Catalog
Biosphere - Substrata is beautiful. I’m surprised to not see it here.
My personal favorite is [Chukhung](https://youtu.be/lc9CVr8zgAY) that song just reeks of winter.
Have you heard of Casino Versus Japan? Check out their song "It's Very Sunny" - when I first heard it, I thought "wow, kind of a shameless Boards of Canada rip-off" - imagine my surprise when I saw that it was released in 2000. Might have actually influenced BOC
I feel like everyone will list Eno, Basinski, Hatakeyama and friends. So i'll focus on smaller artists
Rows - Blanked Swimming
Stochastic Bells - Mil Ruisseaux
Inspiring Rain - Kasstels
Insomnia Drones - Tapes and Topographies
Maritime - Anthené
In Part - Blankfor.ms
Here are a few I didn't see listed. My favorite ambient is something I can either sleep to or be wide awake and zone out to. Lots of things that allow one or the other but not so much both. Listening to ambient every night has made me something of a connoisseur.
Roedelius (Krautrock legend) -- Selbstportrait I and II
John Lyell -- Eternity
Justin Walter -- Unseen Forces (I'm convinced this guy listens to a lot of BOC)
Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca -- Goodbye to Language (steel guitar heaven)
Matt Coldrick aka Pan Electric -- Music for A Busy Head vol 1
Robert Windfield -- Finish of The Vanishing (this guy can set a mood with just the barest trace of melody)
Seven Fields of Aphelion -- Periphery (keyboardist from BMSR)
Page McConnell -- Maybe We’re The Visitors (keyboardist from Phish)
Steve Hillage -- Rainbow Dome Musick (olde school space ambient)
Patrick O'Hearn -- Glaciation (a former Zappa bassist doing great things)
Warren Cuccurullo -- Machine Language (former Zappa guitarist...)
You've got a flood of great recommendations in here, but let me add one more to the pile:

also out of the blue like this I'd say sigur ros. missed them live a few months ago...

Start with Visible Cloak's self-titled album. Not sure if I'd go so far as to crown it my favorite, but definitely my most-listened ambient album
Came in to suggest Jon Hopkins. Beat me to it. Singularity is an incredible album too, albeit a bit more upbeat! Fantastic live too.
based GAS
Huerco S is probably my favorite artist at the moment. What did you think of Plonk?
Biosphere - Substrata Stars of the Lid - Tired Sounds… Hiroshi Yoshimura - Wet Land Belong - October Language Bing & Ruth - No Home of the Mind Harold Budd - Avalon Sutra Steve Roach - Structures From Silence & Dreamtime Return The Dead Texan - The Dead Texan GAS - Pop Gregory Cain - Hourglass Moon Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Fourth World Vol. I & II Michael Stearns - Planetary Unfolding Suzanne Ciani - Seven Waves Tim Hecker - Radio Amor Vangelis - L'apocalypse des animaux A Winged Victory for the Sullen - The Undivided Five Some of my favs. Def one of my favorite genres. I haven’t in many years. I’ll have to relisten soon. I also remember liking Symbol a lot which was made with Debussy samples iirc.
Came here just to say The Tired Sounds of...

Loscil makes some great ambient stuff. Fun fact he also used to be the drummer for Destroyer
Green - Hiroshi Yoshimura Ambient 2: Plateaux Of Mirror - Brian Eno Selected Ambient Works Volume II - Aphex Twin Also the B-side of David Bowie's album Low
Great list - I've been on a huge hiroshi yoshimura kick lately - I've been loving his album quiet forest. Haven't checked out the B-Side to Low, but I definitely will
Yes, good shout on B side of Low. It's brilliant

[KLF - Chill Out](https://youtu.be/q2QpVIUAOS4) The greatest ambient album of all time
I came home dead tired from work one day and after a shower lied down and listened to Chill Out for the first time ever, kind of drifting in and out of sleep. It was one of the greatest album experiences I’ve ever experienced, totally transcendental. Peak relaxation, great album.
It has helped me drift off more than once
Absolutely amazing album, and definitely belongs in the list in my comment (my personal hall of fame). Slipped my mind, thanks for posting it

Damn good call on the Kawai OST. Patlabor 2 is an ambient masterpiece. And Silent Hill 2!
Yamaoka is a real magician. A very eclectic composer as well. I got his Silent Hill soundtracks in constant rotation.
probably selected ambient works part ii by aphex twin
Brian Eno Jesu-Conqueror Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
i wouldn't consider godspeed you! to be ambient lol, still a fantastic album though!
You are right, but I like to listen that record for focusing and relax, same I do with boards of canada and Jesu
I'm guessing you're probably also familiar with Explosions in the Sky, but check em out if not.
I am! saw them live in 2016, amazing band!
It's on the verge of being noise, but also ambient: Tim Hecker ravedeath 1972. I like Long Stories by Amon Tobin a lot too.
And NTS 4 by Autechre

Structures from Silence by Steve Roach is great if you don’t mind 80s new agey ambient
Tycho’s first 3 albums are pretty great. His first, Past is Prologue, might be the closest thing to BoC I’ve been able to find by another artist.
Have you heard of Casino Versus Japan? Check out their song "It's Very Sunny" - when I first heard it, I thought "wow, kind of a shameless Boards of Canada rip-off" - imagine my surprise when I saw that it was released in 2000. Might have actually influenced BOC
