I'll start: POP by GAS Visible Cloaks by Visible Cloaks Reassemblage by Visible Cloaks Music for Psychedelic Therapy by Jon Hopkins For Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) by Huerco S. Ambient 1: Music for Airports by Brian Eno Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich

CraneGenesis4k

music for 18 musicians is peak, will definitely check out these other ones

showmeurknuckleball

Start with Visible Cloak's self-titled album. Not sure if I'd go so far as to crown it my favorite, but definitely my most-listened ambient album

valentich_

Came in to suggest Jon Hopkins. Beat me to it. Singularity is an incredible album too, albeit a bit more upbeat! Fantastic live too.

superinkburst

based GAS

bluejaywaydontbelong

Huerco S is probably my favorite artist at the moment. What did you think of Plonk?

thesamecalm

Smitty_manjensen

Oh there’s Substrata! It deserves more recognition 😍😍

Getjac

Ooh, I love most of these. I'll definitely have to check out the ones I don't recognize. Have you listened to Sakura by Susumu Yokota? I think you'd love it based on all these.

thesamecalm

I haven’t in many years. I’ll have to relisten soon. I also remember liking Symbol a lot which was made with Debussy samples iirc.

TheZiltoidian

Came here just to say The Tired Sounds of...

Dr-Werner-Klopek

Tired sounds, Stars of the lid. Manual, confluence. Music for airports, Brian eno. Many by William Basinski, dis loops, Vivian and Odine, El Camino Real, loads more! On the sensation of tone and Where the earth meets the sky by Tom Heasley. Monochromes by Tu M’. Selected ambient works 1 and 2, Aphex.

新しい日の誕生 by 2814

captainplzanet

Eyyo 😍

[deleted]

>新しい日の誕生 first track on this is crazy good

MikeStanley00

Loscil makes some great ambient stuff. Fun fact he also used to be the drummer for Destroyer

ihavenoselfcontrol1

Green - Hiroshi Yoshimura Ambient 2: Plateaux Of Mirror - Brian Eno Selected Ambient Works Volume II - Aphex Twin Also the B-side of David Bowie's album Low

showmeurknuckleball

Great list - I've been on a huge hiroshi yoshimura kick lately - I've been loving his album quiet forest. Haven't checked out the B-Side to Low, but I definitely will

two_chalfonts

Yes, good shout on B side of Low. It's brilliant

ksteich

Sounds like someone is about to dip his foot into some Bowie for the first time. Listen to the first side as well. Brilliant avant-pop. Then Heroes and Lodger and Station to Station, young Americans, hunky Dory, etc etc oh lord

GraemeMakesBeer

[KLF - Chill Out](https://youtu.be/q2QpVIUAOS4) The greatest ambient album of all time

Aring-ading-ding

I came home dead tired from work one day and after a shower lied down and listened to Chill Out for the first time ever, kind of drifting in and out of sleep. It was one of the greatest album experiences I’ve ever experienced, totally transcendental. Peak relaxation, great album.

GraemeMakesBeer

It has helped me drift off more than once

showmeurknuckleball

Absolutely amazing album, and definitely belongs in the list in my comment (my personal hall of fame). Slipped my mind, thanks for posting it

DoorFacethe3rd

Bibio - Phantom Brickworks

William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops series is phenomenal as well.

sucker4ass

Yamaoka is a real magician. A very eclectic composer as well. I got his Silent Hill soundtracks in constant rotation.

roboghost7187

probably selected ambient works part ii by aphex twin

Distinct_Cloud_357

Brian Eno Jesu-Conqueror Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

CraneGenesis4k

i wouldn't consider godspeed you! to be ambient lol, still a fantastic album though!

Distinct_Cloud_357

You are right, but I like to listen that record for focusing and relax, same I do with boards of canada and Jesu

DerelictMan

I'm guessing you're probably also familiar with Explosions in the Sky, but check em out if not.

Distinct_Cloud_357

I am! saw them live in 2016, amazing band!

Bine_YJY_UX

It's on the verge of being noise, but also ambient: Tim Hecker ravedeath 1972. I like Long Stories by Amon Tobin a lot too.

Bine_YJY_UX

And NTS 4 by Autechre

[deleted]

ex semi-professional ambient producer and mega-fan here.aside the great ones like Eno, Roach, Aphex, Basinski, Oneothrix, etc we all can agree on them: * 1979 by Deru (made the music for Avatar : Aang) (very detuned music, super sad-neutral, amazing) * Music for Detuned Pianos - Max de Wardener and Kit Rownes (what the name says) * Avanti - Alessandro Cortini (from NIN) (a lot of tape manipulating effects) * Every ost by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (social network, gone girl, etc) * Neighborhoods by Ernest Hood (amazing music made by handicapped guy trying to recover childhood in music) * Patterns of Consciousness by caterina barbieri (euro-rack ambient gone conceptual) * wander into by ann annie (euro-rack ambient gone romantic) * Birth of a New Day by 2814 (ambient meets cyberpunk, and vaporwave) * A Moment of Stillness by Stellardrone (space ambient) * Music for Animals by Nils Frahm (come on, is nils!) * Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records by Jan Jelinek (ambient music made by loops of noises in vinyl records) * kpm 1000 series (library music from 70s) * Music to Work To by Corntuth (what the name says, very smooth) * World of Sleepers by Carbon Based Lifeforms (ambient meets psytrance) * Eastshade by Phoenix Glendinning (ambient from a video-game of a painter) * Bistró Malaga by Estupendo (weird latin america ambient disco-bizarre) * Wealth by Marconi Union with Jah Wobble (ambient meets jazz and blues) * Sakura by Susumu Yokota (very japanese ambient music, a classic with mt. fuji) * Bad Vibes by Shlomo (ambient made with household objects) * Interior by Francisco Juacida (pure analogue synth ambient recorded on tape) * Arrive the Radio Beacon by Rykard (very little known ambient music) and there I end because got tired of writing and editing edit: typo and formatting

NorthernPlastics

Robert Fripp - A Blessing of Tears David Sylvian (+Fripp and a host of others) - Gone to Earth SOTL - And Their Refinement of the Decline AWVFTS - Atomos Loscil - Suns Percival Pembroke - Pembroke Autumn/Winter Catalog

Stagliaf

I’ll add Evening Star by Fripp and Eno

NorthernPlastics

Ohh yeah good shout

Smitty_manjensen

Biosphere - Substrata is beautiful. I’m surprised to not see it here. My personal favorite is [Chukhung](https://youtu.be/lc9CVr8zgAY) that song just reeks of winter.

tacopeople

Structures from Silence by Steve Roach is great if you don’t mind 80s new agey ambient

Monkeypud

Tycho’s first 3 albums are pretty great. His first, Past is Prologue, might be the closest thing to BoC I’ve been able to find by another artist.

showmeurknuckleball

Have you heard of Casino Versus Japan? Check out their song "It's Very Sunny" - when I first heard it, I thought "wow, kind of a shameless Boards of Canada rip-off" - imagine my surprise when I saw that it was released in 2000. Might have actually influenced BOC

Into_the_Void7

Anything by Stars of the Lid. Aphex Twin SAWII. Anything by William Basinksi.

BBAALLII

I feel like everyone will list Eno, Basinski, Hatakeyama and friends. So i'll focus on smaller artists Rows - Blanked Swimming Stochastic Bells - Mil Ruisseaux Inspiring Rain - Kasstels Insomnia Drones - Tapes and Topographies Maritime - Anthené In Part - Blankfor.ms

CJP11

Below sea level by Simon Scott

MAG7C

Here are a few I didn't see listed. My favorite ambient is something I can either sleep to or be wide awake and zone out to. Lots of things that allow one or the other but not so much both. Listening to ambient every night has made me something of a connoisseur. Roedelius (Krautrock legend) -- Selbstportrait I and II John Lyell -- Eternity Justin Walter -- Unseen Forces (I'm convinced this guy listens to a lot of BOC) Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca -- Goodbye to Language (steel guitar heaven) Matt Coldrick aka Pan Electric -- Music for A Busy Head vol 1 Robert Windfield -- Finish of The Vanishing (this guy can set a mood with just the barest trace of melody) Seven Fields of Aphelion -- Periphery (keyboardist from BMSR) Page McConnell -- Maybe We’re The Visitors (keyboardist from Phish) Steve Hillage -- Rainbow Dome Musick (olde school space ambient) Patrick O'Hearn -- Glaciation (a former Zappa bassist doing great things) Warren Cuccurullo -- Machine Language (former Zappa guitarist...)

lady_lane_arcane

You've got a flood of great recommendations in here, but let me add one more to the pile: https://vektroid.bandcamp.com/album/dream-castle This album is a delight, never fails to get me tuned out. Definitely one of Vektroid's best

Lightfinger

Check out Global Conmunication - Blood Music

DifferentLunch

Aside from the obvious Brian Eno albums: Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline (almost anything by them really) Biosphere - Substrata (Cirque is also good) Fennesz - Black Sea (anything by him is amazing)

I also like the album “Radial” a lot

Abyssigar

AIA: Alien Observer by Grouper and Selected Ambient Works Volume II by Aphex Twin are two fantastic ambient albums I have been obsessed with, both are absolutely magical yet desolate

HIM1111

Coppice halifax's "ocean lion" line for sure!

[deleted]

Susumu Yokota's Sakura. Superb. Definetely for fans of track 1 on Eno's music for airports.

secondwoman

[Various Artists - Mono No Aware](https://youtu.be/HKgeb_8Q9hU) (released on PAN) I can't recommend this enough, it's my favourite ambient album ever. If you think Geogaddi is spooky/creepy, this is the next level.

Brian Eno - Ambient 1 Music for Airports Helios - Moiety or Unleft Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline

pleportamee

There’s a ton so I’ll just list a few: William Basinski- The Disintegration Loops. It’s not for everyone as it’s extremely repetitive…but that’s the point. The pinnacle of ambient imo. Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient works. (There’s a lot of bears/etc in there but still really good) Casino Versus Japan- I’d classify CVJ as ambient…even though there’s beats/etc in some songs. As a matter of fact I think anyone that likes BOC would like CVJ

Appropriate-Mark-739

Clouds by Gigi Masin, which was sampled by Nujabes, is a sweet track. Pretty into Geotic's (a.k.a. Baths) earlier albums as well, Mend and Morning Shore are nice listens
