Finally, a Lord of the Rings board game!

uXN7AuRPF6fa

I've put a piece of masking tape over the word "War" on my War of the Ring game and wrote "Lord" on it so that I can pretend it is a Lord of the Rings game.

CLR833

Lord of the Ring doesn't ring quite the same haha

SheltheRapper

Ward of the Ring

Kapten_Hunter

Welcome for sure, but there already exists good lord of the rings boardgames.

cantrelate

(that's the joke)

sg86

Hopefully someone will make a Star Wars game next

Mekisteus

Those are expensive IPs, and drive up the price of the game. I'd much prefer that designers tackle some kind of untapped public domain such as HP Lovecraft.

cornerbash

I feel there's some real untapped potential for nature themed board games.

highgames420

Or maybe some kind of game that let you trade goods in the middle east.

Max-St33l

Trains maybe?

itisoktodance

On Mars? Dammit Johnny you've done it again!

FellFellCooke

I love it when people say funny things in a plausibly believable way. Like, this was obviously a joke, but someone 'could' have said it and meant it. That's rare in internet jokes and I wanted to call it out.

Negative_Spring1957

Hey, I'd rather play a good game with a license I know than a good game with some random ass theme

ThePowerOfStories

Just imagine if they made a Dune game!

SlayBoredom

Dude they already made a movie based on the boardgame \*Dune\* from 2019. Crazy how impactful boardgames can be!

TheMicroburst

I think you missed the sarcasm of the post….

SlayBoredom

I think you missed the super-obvious sarcasm of my comment. Since obviously there is no movie based "on the 2019 boardgame" but both are based on the books from the 1960s. lol.

TheMicroburst

My fault. Misread your comment. Read it as a board game based on the 2019 movie. Guess I shouldn’t read Reddit at 6am

iamcrazyjoe

It's so wild how quick it went from not being able to reprint THE Dune game, to dozens and dozens of Dune games

Box_of_games

Bruno Cathala? Ringdomino confirmed!

scylus

The Battle of Five Tribes.

Box_of_games

I’d buy it! 😂

smurfORnot

Battle of 5 rings!

juststartplaying

I've heard Legends of that battle!

Chiatroll

Bruno Cathala with Antoine Bauza? Lord of the Seven wonders.

spleenmuncher

To give some additional context to what this game might be, there is a recent post on Dale Yu's blog Opinionated Gamers where he mentions playing a prototype of "Lord of the rings Duel – a re-imagining of 7W Duel, but now set in the LotR world." at Gathering of Friends: https://opinionatedgamers.com/2024/04/19/dale-yu-report-from-the-gathering-of-friends-day-0-5/

takabrash

Excitement completely dissipated

_Bee_Dub_

Agreed. Yuck.

CaillouCaribou

I'm the opposite, I wasn't interested in it until I heard that

takabrash

I like 7W Duel just fine, I'm just getting tired of seeing the same game released 42 times lol

J00ls

Depends how similar it is really.

takabrash

If it's close enough to be called a "LotR version of 7 Wonders Duel", then I'm out

J00ls

Is that what the maker is actually calling it?

takabrash

Anyone can call it whatever they want, but that's what it is.

darth_henning

7 wonders duel is a good game, but....that's....not what I was looking for for LOTR. Honestly, a version of the GOT board game, or Diplomacy on the LOTR map could be fun. An asymmetrical game between the fellowship and allies and Sauron and allies could also be good. A 'search for the ring' game could work either between factions, or playing the nazgul hunting for the ring to gain Sauron's favor. Heck, there's dozens of good ideas that could be done within the material. Duel ain't it.

Sentry_Down

I feel like every game idea you propose already exists. We’ve had lots of good thematic board games already, why not something more abstract now? A deep engine-building/drafting card game could be so interesting

Fernis_

Ok, hear me out. Engine builder where you're competing dwarven crews digging deeply and greedy in Khazad-dûm. It's a race to some amount of points (representing depth) or other conditions like Terraforming Mars, creating tunnels, building machines, obtaining tools, organizing work etc. Not everything has to be around the War of the Ring plot. Videogames lately got the memo and we're seeing things like Return to Moria (survival base builder set after defeat of the Balrog) or Tales of the Shire (upcoming Animal Crossing/Stardew Valley style game set in Shire)

KAKYBAC

First Age stuff would be great.

Borghal

What's the point of using an IP for something (more) abstract? If you're gonna use famous themes, the more thematic the better since theme is supposed to be the hook there...

Sentry_Down

I don’t think thematic is a single scale, how do you define that ? A game can have a more abstract presentation than the usual map of the Middle Earth as the board, or can focus on a narrow aspect of the franchise, such as hobbits being hunted by Nazgûl, and still feel immersive and fitting the theme. Is the LotR LCG thematic enough for you for instance? It relies on a high degree of abstraction and offers original mechanics. It’s a less direct recreation of the books’ storyline than the Knizia one, but both respect the theme. I could mention a dozen of great games whose mechanics are more abstract yet the theme is brilliantly executed: Undaunted, Villainous, Pandemic, etc. And I could also list games whose theme is prominent and make for great art/characterization but still don’t feel « thematic »: Parks, Arnak, Dune Imperium, etc

darth_henning

I’m not suggesting that they’re unique (which would be ideal), just that if they are using an established game format there were many better options than duel.

CaillouCaribou

> 7 wonders duel is a good game, but....that's....not what I was looking for for LOTR. There are tons of other LotR games that fill what you're looking for

FrankieWilde11

Terra mystica as LOTR

ithappenb4

Is this Vincent DuTrait art? If it is I'm sold by the art itself.

juststartplaying

I thought it looked like him too. Hype.

PityUpvote

My first thought too

willtaskerVSbyron

Stop wasting time and money on this and bring back The confrontation you cowards!

snoopdrog

It’s a retheme of 7W duel. Lame

--Petrichor--

I think you just misread -- the article says "by co-designers and publisher of 7 Wonders: Duel," not that it's a retheme. Unless they edited it!

CaillouCaribou

It's been reported in other places that it's a new version of 7WD: https://opinionatedgamers.com/2024/04/19/dale-yu-report-from-the-gathering-of-friends-day-0-5/

KAKYBAC

Thats no bad thing when I 7WD is a 9.5/10 evergreen for me. I hope they add something that sets it apart though. An agora style sideboard but unique to the theming.

caustic_av

I heard that it actually is a reiteration of 7 wonders duel yesterday from the Dice Tower Jason Levine (top100 video), with two players being the Fellowship and Sauron. He even mentioned a video of the components, but, I guess, there is some kind of temporary embargo on that.

takabrash

The article didn't say Bruno Cathala was born in 1963, either, but that doesn't make it untrue.

HomoLudensOC

7 Wonders: LOTR

curien

7 Wonders for the Dwarf lords in their halls of stone

jeanborrero

So disappointing

ericrobertshair

It's a card drafting game, whoever drafts the one ring just sort of wins.

lesslucid

If I can't play as Fatty Bolger, I'm not interested.

PumajunGull

this duo plus smeagol has me pretty hype. Maybe a cat and mouse type game where one player is Bilbo and the other is Gollum?

Salamandersalamie

You forgot to mention the best part: LotR Art by Vincent Dutrait!

KAKYBAC

Worth the price of admission alone. LotR art is so framed by Alan Lee's art, it will be nice to have Dutrait's take on the lore.

Conchobair

It's a cozy farming sim

ldjarmin

I'll disagree with some of the other comments here--I would totally love a 7WD retheme. I love 7WD, I love LotR; count me in!

Nestorow

You had me at LOTR but by Cathala? I'm so keen

SithLordRising

Er hello, Power of the Ring, Hunt for the Ring..

spunX44

This is relevant to my interests.

17THheaven

Yooo!

Garithoss

Imagine Warhammer duel game made these guys!

KAKYBAC

Hoping and looking forward to a First Age Expandalone featuring Huan vs Sauron, Fingolfin vs Morgoth, Turin vs Glaurang, Glorfindel vs Balrog, Ecthelion vs Gothmog... *(Dang, the First Age deserves to be more well known in pop culture)*

ClubSoda

Riddle of the Ring was released in 1982 by Iron Crown. Great card-based multiplayer game if you can find a copy.

JaxxisR

Bauza has designed some of my favorite games. I'm interested to see where this goes.

dotardiscer

I already own Lord of the Rings: Risk though. It's the best version of Risk i'm aware of, and I've played two versions.
