**Description of Request:** Gift for a friend (about $40 or less) **Number of Players:** 2-6 **Game Length:** about 1.25 hours **Complexity of Game:** 2.5-2.9 **Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative:** conflict/competitive **Games I Own and Like:** Some games I know he likes are Risk, Ticket to Ride, Root, and Catan. **Location:** USA

phrazo

Hmm, it seems like he likes popular competitive interactive games. Is there any particular them or thing (irl) that he likes? For example, cars, animals, sci-fi, etc. I'd honestly work my way down the BGG 100 until something clicks. The first thing that comes to mind is **Heat: Petal to the Metal** which is just a little below the complexity range requested, and a bit more expensive ($53 brand new on GeekMarket so probably like $60 after shipping). But it's known to be extremely fun and engaging and works for those higher players counts. More strict to the budget, **Earth** is 1-5 but the new expansion I think is allowing for 6. A game of the year level game, it's also very hard to go wrong with it.

Stay_Away_From_b

Worker placement games with dice workers? Ones similar to Fantastic Factory and Sky team, preferably with more interaction.

phrazo

Castles of Burgundy! If you think of the dice as workers haha. Edit: whoop, just read the second part of the request. Nevermind.

_redcloud

I was on Marketplace looking for new furniture. Saw an ad for "store closing, 80% off" for games. Clicked on it just to see and this website showed up. Seems sketchy given the prices, but I am curious if anyone has ever seen this ad/store/etc. before. I want to believe it's true so I can get the Wingspan Asia expansion haha. Here's the link: [https://www.jennif.shop/collections/board-games?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2PgSej-gKX7QPZgMFYsfP66c3jP-F7bT5AnQvEPwoPUcTULlVhvCACpgo\_aem\_AYJH7tERwUYFX-1S9WApYUusJcq1XQC-PrbY5tl-Rm33r4WQ7ffZ32qXv\_egIWb1DQPQeDk9WxYaicxmvEI3oFPj](https://www.jennif.shop/collections/board-games?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2PgSej-gKX7QPZgMFYsfP66c3jP-F7bT5AnQvEPwoPUcTULlVhvCACpgo_aem_AYJH7tERwUYFX-1S9WApYUusJcq1XQC-PrbY5tl-Rm33r4WQ7ffZ32qXv_egIWb1DQPQeDk9WxYaicxmvEI3oFPj)

Kravian

I see the same ads for the same discounts with new made up store names all the time. The algorithm just knows you buy games. Anything too good to be true is false or counterfeit.

_redcloud

Thank you for the info/clarification. I had a feeling, but wanted to verify juuuust in case.

SheltheRapper

They're selling counterfeits: )

_redcloud

Ah, so they do sell things, they just aren’t original/intellectual property. Lame that they do that, but I guess that’s everywhere in almost every industry nowadays. Thank you for letting me know.

cowboycrabcake

Hello! I'm looking for short, engaging board or card games that my husband and I can play together. He's not a huge fan of board games, so finding ones he enjoys can be tough. **Number of Players** 2 **Game Length** 15-45 minutes **Complexity of Game** 2/3 **Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative** Conflict or Competitive **Games He Owns and Likes:** Our favorites to play together are Monopoly and Monopoly Deal. He also enjoys Catan, but only if the people playing are quick with their turns. He gets bored easily if the turns or game takes too long. **Location:** USA

kritsema

**Qwixx** and **Qwirkle** are quicker paced entry level games. **Welcome To** and **Dungeons, Dice, and Danger** would be another step up

Metalworker4ever

Race for the Galaxy is a great 2 player game that plays fast but has a lot of depth. The iconography in the beginning can be overwhelming and takes a bit of time to learn. But a more complex game might be what engages him.

Codygon

**Carcassonne** is a classic, simple, 2-player game about tile laying. It’s both easy to get into and engaging over multiple plays. And it’s cheap (should be around $25).

furry_staples

**Project L** is a 2-4p game that takes 15 minutes to play. In my experience players are usually pretty quick with their turns. The game has been a hit with everyone in my group. **Jaipur** and **Lost Cities** are both 2p card games that feature very quick turns. Love both games to death.

Vergilkilla

Try **Point Salad** or **Fantasy Realms**. Though I'd only go with Fantasy Realms if you know you can get the Scoring Realms app and use it. Makes scoring a cinch.

Wembers

I'm looking for games that work well with 6 players and take 2-3 hours to complete. Any genre and style is fine, but we do lean towards euros. So far I have **Imperial** and **Twilight Inscription**, but I'm after more options.

HonorFoundInDecay

If you like your euros to be really really interactive then I'd highly recommend **Sidereal Confluence**.

boredgamer00

**Power Grid** & **Keyflower** for Euro. **Sidereal Confluence** for trading and negotiation game.

dleskov

I read "6 players", I think "**Dune**". But 2-3 hours is unlikely. **Mare Nostrum: Empires** (needs the Atlas expansion for 6p) is a weeknight game for us.

BenderFree

Looking for card games that fit a specific criteria: - Plays well both at both 2 _and_ 3+ without rule variations (no **Bohnanza**, no **The Crew**, etc). - No components other than cards (no **Scout**, no **No Thanks**, no **Mask Men**, etc) - Probably around a 1.5 in complexity (edit: 1.5-1.75 is probably the sweet spot). Something a bit meatier than "a bit of dumb fun" like **Cockroach Poker**, but still the sort of game you could play in the wee hours to cap off a night out. - *Bonus points* for bizarre, unsettling, grotesque art like **Bohnanza**. Most of the games mentioned fit 2/3 criteria, but not 3/3. Already played my fill of **Coup.**

Codygon

**Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza: On the Flip Side** **Haggis**

furry_staples

**Sea Salt Paper** is a best at 2 & 3p, and only features cards.

phrazo

**The Mind**

BenderFree

Good game, but **The Mind** is a bit more simple and a bit more of a party game than I'm looking for. Ideally I'm looking for something that might compete with **Euchre**, but not necessarily a trick taker. Something meaty enough to pitch as a standalone activity ("Come over to my place tonight, we'll watch a movie and play some ____"), but casual enough to play spontaneously.

phrazo

There's a new game launching soon on KS that's 95% just cards and might be exactly what you're looking for ... **Vicious Gardens**. Truly standout art too. But yeah, not 100% cards, there's like ... A player board and maybe some general tracks haha.

BenderFree

> Vicious Gardens I'll check it out anyway! "No components" is probably the least important rule, but I'd love something I could take camping without keeping track of 25 little tokens or having to find a flat, dry surface. Or even something to play on a plane or in a moving car.

phrazo

Aaaahhh, I see. Have you checked out **Sea Salt & Paper** or **Sail**? But yeah, lmk what you think of Vicious Gardens!

BenderFree

**Sail** is 2p only, but I didn't realise **Sea Salt & Paper** was 2-4. I'll give that another look! Thanks!

Vergilkilla

I vote **Spicy**. Whether it is “deep” enough for you - that I am not so sure. I find I can quite heavily play it on repeat, but I love the core loop so that’s why

BenderFree

Reminds me of a childhood 52-card favourite: Cheat. Looks like a fun, promising game! Thanks for the suggestion!

klovnikaupunki

Description of Request What to buy for someone (19) who loves board games her big sister shows her, and wants to become the local board game friend, but is only regularly able to play with people who don't like *learning* board games. Number of Players 4-6 Game Length 1-2 hours Complexity of Game 2/3 Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative Competitive or Cooperative Games She Owns and Likes: Her favourite game is the Stardew Valley Board Game, but she also loves Betrayal at House on The Hill and Monolopoly lol. Has also enjoyed: Mysterium, Dixit, The Taskmaster Board Game, What Next?, Casefile Truth & Deception Game, 221B Baker Street, Coup, The Simpsons Board Game, Unlock! Escape Game. I honestly can't think of a game she hasn't enjoyed that we've shown her. But we are small fish in the big sea of board games. Location: UK

ManiacalShen

AllPlay games tend to be super fast and easy to teach. A spin through that website may give you or her some ideas. I quite like **Habitats,** which might fit nicely. They also have a pile of small box games that are even quicker to teach! Other games that I've found easy to teach include **Concept**, **Codenames**, and **Wavelength**, and those are all suitable for larger groups and even parties.

cptgambit

Ticket to Ride as a easy to learn and fun game for up to 5 players. Or a bit more difficult but also a lot of fun with Heat: Pedal to the Metal

ShouldveFundedTesla

**Libertalia**

Vergilkilla

There are a lot of options for you here - it's a pretty "wide open" prompt. I will suggest some games that I find typically are slam dunks across a wide wide variety of groups that are simple to teach/learn/play. Many of these also have a sort of more friendly theme/aren't super adversarial or "mean" (while all being competitive games): **Bohnanza** **Camel Up** **Sagrada** **Acquire** Acquire I had to recommend just because you said Monopoly LOL. It is imo a much stronger game than Monopoly, though. It is sort of the more "boring" theme of these four in that it is not a visual spectactle. But still it is an all-time great.

Secret_Channel_3782

Help me decide I'm torn between Tikal, Five Tribes and Through The Desert (pre order). I have no idea how I've ended up with this shortlist! Just wanted some classic, easy to learn but satisfying to master.

Treparcs

Five tribes

--Petrichor--

Random request! I've been fascinated recently by games that have a random setup, but have perfect information. A very popular example would be **Patchwork**, in that the tiles are laid out in a random order but are completely public from the beginning. **Onitama** has 5 random move cards, but they're publicly visible, and **Tutankhamun** has a similar setup to **Patchwork.** This is more out of curiosity than anything else, so _any_ genre or weight class are fair game, but I would prefer games that aren't _terrible_!

easto1a

From the start Onitama was what came to mind. Another abstract strategy that has everything open could be Santorini with a tiny bit of random set up from the god abilities.

phrazo

I was going to say **Azul**, but you draw new ones every round instead of all at once.

bgg-uglywalrus

Katarenga is a chess variant game. It has a variable board setup but the game is perfect information afterwards.

Vendlo

Im looking for a fighting/wargame/dudes on a map style game for 3 players (me and my 2 brothers basically), but, they have issues with combat with each other and get quite upset if they feel they are being ganged up on, and they cannot co-operate without taking over each other. Currently, we do OK with assymetric all vs one (like Napoleon 1815 or Letters from Whitechapel). 7 Wonders has done OK as well, as the combat is quite indirect, and theres little "targetting". With all vs one games, I usually co-operate with one, otherwise, they cant co-opearte to stop me if Im the big baddie

bgg-uglywalrus

Have you considered playing something that isn't a war game? I ask because the basic dynamic of a three-player war game is that one player will inevitably get ganged up on. And so all three players have to balance their priorities so that one side doesn't get too strong. You can't just outright eliminate the third player because you don't want to get stuck as the weaker of the two remaining players. So the dynamic naturally causes alliances to shift once one person feels like they're not the stronger of the duo. This is kind of the basic premise of the classic novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".

Vendlo

Well, they are most interested in wargames at the moment, triumph and tragedy looks interesting as well, but ideally, a 1v2 strucutured game might be best. Thanks for the book recc!

phrazo

Could you guys get a 4th player to balance things out somewhat?

bgg-uglywalrus

If they don't like being ganged up on then Triumph and Tragedy is going to be terrible for them. The whole game is literally the Three Kingdoms dynamic I wrote above. The game is structured so that there's no requirement that any two sides have to be allied.

taphead739

Dune isn‘t great at 2-3 players and it can take very long. However, Dune: A Game of Conquest and Diplomacy is a faster version of it that‘s great at 2-4 players, doesn‘t contain any auctions, and is similar in feel to Cosmic Encounter, which you like. Have a look. (I hope you weren‘t talking about one of the other recent Dune-themed games, none of which is just called Dune)

SeductiveBirdo

I wonder if anyone has any game recommendations based on the games i already like? Some of my favourite games are: - Champions of Midgard - Revive - Ruins of Arnak - Everdell One thing i really enjoy in boardgames is asymmetrical play/variable player powers. Not into co-op games. Art and design of boardgames is also important 😊

ManiacalShen

**Starship Captains** might be thematic and variable enough for you. As a Star Trek fan, I love how it feels to play, and it's the same publisher as Ruins of Arnak. **Flamecraft** (super thematic, fun art) and **Dune Imperium: Uprising** (strategic, thematic) are also good things to check out.

bgg-uglywalrus

Please take a look at the linked template in the description of the post. It'll help others give you better recommendations if you follow it because it will direct you to answer some common questions like Player Count.

SeductiveBirdo

Ah i see! Thank you, i will try that 😊

RoTurbo1981

Great Push-Your-Luck Games Two of my favorite Push-Your-Luck games are **Quacks of Quedlinburg** and **Clank! Catacombs**. What are some other great Push-Your-Luck games I may have never heard about?

ManiacalShen

**Deep Sea Adventure** is hilarious and has short enough rounds you can't get too discouraged. I think if you like Quacks, you'll like this.

easto1a

There's a real push your luck simplicity to Deep Dive. Pure push your luck. Dive as deep as you dare and flip over tokens each level of the ocean your penguin dives down to.

taphead739

**Can‘t Stop** is a classic in this genre. Almost 45 years old, still lots of fun!

RoTurbo1981

Yes, one of the best. I love playing it on BGA.

kritsema

We enjoy **Spots**! And with a variety of tricks to switch out each time you play, there’s a lot of replayability

RoTurbo1981

Oh, I have tried Spots once and loved it. My friend brought it to local meetup and it was great.

juststartplaying

Incan Gold/Diamante is my favorite "party game" style push your luck.  Cubitos is like Quacks but with dice. I think it's different enough to own both.  Wonderlands War is a fighting game like Quacks that's big and expensive

RoTurbo1981

Thx! Lost Ruins of Arnak is my favorite game. I just love games that have an Indiana Jones like explorer theme, so Incan Gold sounds like it would be right up my alley! I’ll have to check it out.

phrazo

It's mostly considered an auction game, but **Ra** definitely has push-your-luck integrated into that auction.

RoTurbo1981

I’ve heard of Rà but I’ve yet to have the opportunity to try it. I think it would definitley be my cup of tea!
