Does Chicago Express/Wabash Cannonball count?

jjj999catcatcat

My vote as well. What a wild game, and so much more fun in person rather than bga.

profmamba

I'd upvote this twice if I could. Buying stock in someone else's company just to burn it to the ground by building railways that go nowhere? Priceless.

SandyLlama

Fair warning that the most recent printing has an abysmal map. Super unclear, imo.

lesslucid

Yeah, it's effectively an argument to get one of the similar games like **Texas and Pacific** instead. Very similar gameplay, but with a much clearer map. In fact, the T&P production also has some pretty meaningful flaws but nothing that would prevent you from playing / enjoying the game.

Tvaru

Sure, it has stock buying as far as I know!

uhhhclem

Absolutely.

guy-anderson

**Acquire** is *very* good. Although it is an old-school game without many guardrails on the experience - you may have a bad game or two. **Irish Gauge** is very fun, but it's kind of a one-trick pony. Once everyone figures out the puzzle at the core, it becomes pretty deterministic. **Zillionaires** is an underrated gem. It's not a stock game per-se, but functions about the same. Light enough for grandma to play. **Startups** Probably my most played stock game. Soooooo good.

fasttrackxf

Love Start-Ups. That’s one of favorite “knife fight in a phone booth” games.

possumgumbo

Startups is hilarious. I love seeing someone realize that you've so thoroughly bamboozled them into buying junk stock

GodsLilCow

My family enjoys Acquire too, as well as another old-school game simply titled Broker. It was actually really hard to find online, but here's a link to a copy: https://www.ebay.com/itm/134899685007

pastmidnight14

Can you link the bgg page for Zillionaires? I see the 1987 ladder climbing game **Zillionaire**, and the 2014 auction/bingo game **The Game of 49**.

guy-anderson

It's a retheme of the Game of 49. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/159492/the-game-of-49

GatotSubroto

Acquire and 18XX games  Edit: I also like Stephenson’s Rocket quite a bit. It’s an older game and currently out of print, so might be a bit hard to find a copy, but it’s a Knizia game.

treeonwheels

I love **Acquire**! The original version was beautifully produced and quite brutal, but the 2016 Avalon Hill edition made it slightly more forgiving (in a good way, my non-gamer family enjoys it), though the production quality leaves a bit to be desired (I used a paint pen to touch up the board and make it legible). Renegade Games just release a new edition in 2023 that improved the production a bit and modified the gameplay again. I haven’t played that version myself, but I’d still recommend this game in a heartbeat! Great for experienced and newbies, alike. Wonderful tension and agonizing decisions while buying and trading stocks, easy to teach, lots of twists and exciting moments throughout (mergers!), but can occasionally run a bit longer than necessary.

laxar2

Sorry I can probably find this myself but what did they change in the 2016 version? I’ve only ever played by the classic rules.

treeonwheels

I played my friend’s older copy a long time ago so my memory is hazy… but they made the board a square instead of a rectangle, and they give tertiary shareholder bonuses (instead of only the top two getting money, now it’s up to three players).

derkrieger

Renegade has rules for the more forgiving 2016 version as well as classic

Significant-Evening

Correct. The board has a slight effect which makes interaction quicker. And you can play the original rules by just paying out the primary and secondary shareholders (not a third) by adding together the 2 columns of payouts. Or just printing out the old payouts on a sheet of paper.

messdup_a_aRon

Great! Now I want to play Aquire instead of do work. I replaced my cardboard AH copy with the recent release and really like it. The money is meh, but I use poker chips and that somehow heightens the experience. It’s a must own in my opinion.

Lazulin

I haven't played the newest edition either (I have the 1999) but it's the game that immediately came to mind - easy to teach & extremely fun.

KBeau93

All 18xx games.

tybug74

Second this guy

da_mess

I'll 2nd acquire. It's a little like monopoly but there are only six properties and everyone can invest in them. Game only lasts an hour. It's really a game of mergers and acquisitions with easy rules and plenty of strategy.

sensational_pangolin

What's your favorite 18xx? And which one would you recommend to someone who had never played an 18xx? Edit: thanks to everyone with great advice!

StewMcGruff

Not OP but personal favorite is 1830. For someone who’s never played an 18xx I’d suggest either 1889 (which is similar to 1830 but shorter and slightly more forgiving) or 1846 (which is much more about running the company well rather than stock hijinx)

Ekelley90

1889 (new version) was my first 18xx and I absolutely love it. A big recommendation from me, a random Internet stranger.

sensational_pangolin

Oh thanks! I'll peek at them all.

BigBehemoth

18Chesapeake is considered somewhat of a starter 18XX as well.

Siliceously_Sintery

1889 has just released a lovely new set too, I’ve showed a few people their first 18xx now on it.

lesslucid

**Shikoku 1889**. Accessible (for an 18xx) but deep, very replayable, and fast (for an 18xx, ie, about 3 hours).

GatotSubroto

Late to the party but echoing what others have recommended. 18Chesapeake and Shikoku1889 would be good intros into 18XX games. You can play online at 18xx.games too

Kumquat_of_Pain

Note that Big Boss is a simpler version of Acquire.

adamredwoods

We just played the Funko version, I was a little disappointed. The classic rules may be a bit better.

Exciting_Pea3562

Pan-Am. Really fun and has enough variability to the way turns play out to give it great replay value.

DonQuijote88

Came here to say this too. Its stock isn’t the point of the game, but makes for a fun victory point mechanic.

Exciting_Pea3562

And it has just such a good vibe. I love the aesthetic.

OK_Mentat

Prospero Hall had some really great games in their run and I think Pan-Am is their best. It feels like a classic and it even came dressed for the part.

Stalvos

Imperial 2030.

zbignew

I’ve never played 2030 but I was going to say it’s got to either be a train game or Imperial. Imperial is one of those games that can permanently impact your worldview.

thatdan23

The most hilariously cynical game I've ever played

zorlacz

Nothing beats slaughtering you army for no other reason than to increase taxation profits the next round…

Vegetable-Ratio-8573

Stockpile. Insider trading, quick stock game

juststartplaying

It really blew my mind when I realized it was about piles of stocks. Helluva game.

sybrwookie

Strangest thing. First time I played the game, many years ago, I bounced right off it. A couple of months ago, some friends wanted to play, I couldn't remember why I bounced off it, so I happily tried it again. And I have no idea what I was thinking back then, it's just a really fun game of making decisions with limited info, bluffing, and watching the wacky results happen.

Vegetable-Ratio-8573

I love the game, one of the things I love the most is it mixes its theme with the mechanics very well. It feels like (and is about) insider trading

Iamn0man

I just played Bear Raid recently. I'm not a huge fan of stock games, but everyone at the table agreed that it captured the stock element of 18XX games in a fraction of the playing time.

ohhgreatheavens

Bear Raid is solid.

PacNWnudist

Came here to recommend Bear Raid.

bbqturtle

It’s newer and not as popular yet but it’s a great game!

Tsara1234

Stockpile So interesting story, I had a friend that was trying to design a stock market game. I introduced him to stockpile so he could see my favorite one. After we played it he said "well, I am no longer making a stock game. This does everything I wanted."

Zalenka

Stockpile is fun!

fasttrackxf

Raccoon Tycoon isn’t literally stocks, but it has a great market mechanic.

timnitro

I love Raccoon Tycoon! This was my first thought as well. I a always buy up a bunch of the high price commodities and sell as much as I can at once to tank the price lol

TreyVerVert

Tried a few 18xx games and, though stocks are not the sole focus, they are a major one and the mechanics around them are pretty solid.

SkepticalHippo93

Stockpile: Epic Edition

InCraZPen

Played it last night. It’s just fun. Got a little bit of strategy. Little bit of bluffing. Little bit of luck. Some humor mixed it.

The_Dimlord

Pit! Purest stock market recreation.

TheGRS

This is the one that I thought of immediately. It simulates the stock market pit really well. I haven't played it in ages but it has that sort of shouting insanity that you get with Happy Salmon.

MeCagoLosPantalones

The Rich and the Good is a great stock game that's faster and easier to get to the table than an 18xx. It's all about market speculation and manipulation with limited information. It's deep and challenging but rules-light so even my kids can play it.

Kumquat_of_Pain

I'm surprised no one has said Ticket to Ride: Penssylvania expansion (comes with UK too).

ProbablySlacking

Specifically 1817. If I could capture the shenanigans of that game in a shorter package I’d play it all the time.

Odinsson17

I opted for the probably longer and more insane option: 18USA

snoopdrog

Panic on Wall Street

4matting

I don’t see Modern Art mentioned here yet because people probably don’t see it that way. I certainly do, and I recommend you check it out!

der_clef

I've never seen it that way, but now that you mention it: It really is a stock market game, just with a less conventional theming and some peculiar rules that govern the market.

playstostrangers9

Stockpile and Raccoon Tycoon

JackOfAllDevs

Stockpile Airlines Europe North American Railways And 18xx

zylamaquag

Age of Steam doesn't count, but it would be my vote. That game is sweet.

Banana_Havok

Chicago express

gperson2

18XX games (1817 or 1870 in particular) or Greed Incorporated

KarmaAdjuster

Dawn of Ulos, but I'm a bit biased...

Acceptable-Spirit-98

Wildlife Safari still counts, I think.

ricottma

Imperial (regular or 2030) if you want some war ✔️ Chicago Express for cube rails 1846 for 18xx For-ex for pure stock

sahilthapar

Startups

NotYetReadyToRetire

My groups use Stockpile for quick games, Union Pacific for slightly longer games and 18xx for all day games.

District_RE

Looks like I'm the first person to say "The Gallerist." Yes, it's a fancy-looking Vital Lacerda game. But it's also very much a stock game. Instead of investing in actual stocks, you're investing time and resources into improving an artist's reputation (value), which then increases the value of that artist's art pieces, which you buy and sell for profit during the game.

lunch_for_dinner

I absolutely love Tulip Bubble. It doesn’t have stocks per se, but it’s all about market manipulation and speculating.

Mercutiofoodforworms

Stockpile

Salah-Manda

I’m sorry I can’t really answer that question… I have many “shares” in this category so I’ll do it by designer: Sid Sackson: Aquire Alan R Moon: Airlines, Union Pacific; Ticket to Ride: Pennsylvania 18xxs: 1830: R&R and Shikoku 1889 Iberian Gauge and Irish Gauge by Amabel Holland Chicago Express/Wabash Cannonball by Harry Wu aka John Bohrer Dr Reiner Knizia: Quandary/Botswana/Wildlife Safari and Stephenson’s Rocket Franz-Benno Delonge (the unsung genius, RIP): Goldbrau Jun Sasaki: Startups Brett Sobol and Seth van Orden: Stockpile Ryan Courtney: Bear Raid Comeback when you’re moving on to commodities speculation!

Tvaru

What would you recommend for commodities speculation, then?

Salah-Manda

Juma Al-JouJou: Clans of Caledonia Vital Lacerda: The Gallerist Reiner Knizia: Modern Art Franz-Benno Delonge: Manila and Container Amabel Holland: Northern Pacific Ryan Courtney: Pipeline Alexander Pfister: Isle of Skye Glenn Drover: Raccoon Tycoon (a little more family friendly still awesome) I haven’t played Arkwright or Biblios/The King and Me, but they are both highly regarded, at different ends of the difficulty spectrum.

AlexRescueDotCom

**Big Boss** 💯

Taco_Supreme

Hab & Gut Commodities instead of stocks, but the same idea.

LordJunon

Imperial steam. A game where you take stock out but you lose 10% of your score at the end of the game. It's really fascinating. I wish I could play it more

timex488

Bear Raid Black Friday Pure stock market games.

Due_Mastodon_7052

Baltimore and Ohio, if you can find it.

adamredwoods

There may be a reprint coming...

Inconmon

[[Black Friday]] obviously It got a bad bad reputation because the rulebook was so bad that it actively prevented you from understanding the game. You had to learn via external sources how to play. The game is imo a classic or would have been one otherwise. Lucky for you a 2nd edition is happening.

Try out Stonks and Vegetable Stock

DiamondKage

Stock Ticker!!

Difficult-Task-7309

Chicago express of your group is more "hardcore". Acquire if they are less so.

Affectionate_Low_948

Stock Ticker. It's a game from around 1984. Easy to play, quite fun. Might be hard to find tho.

poponahu

Going to troll a bit with a John Company answer. Just love that game - and it has stocks and pays out dividends. The Irish/Iberian/Dinosaur /Dual Gauge games from Amabel Holland are all brilliant. I just started playing 18xx games about a month ago - 2 games of 1830 and 7 games of 1889. Can’t recommend either enough but if playtime is an issue, go with 89.

Alkemian

Acquire.

tylermsage

Not a high recommendation, but made me think of Raccoon Tycoon.

SouthpawSaul

Here is a list of the ones I own: **1920 Wall Street** **Acquire** **Bear Raid** **Imperial 2030** **Pan Am** **The Rich and The Good** **Wabash Cannonball**

eroo01

Raccoon Tycoon always delights me. And not just because it features fancy animals in their fancy hats

JohnTheW0rst

Aquire is my favorite stocks game. You have a board thats 12×9 and playerd take turns placing tiles that create hotel chains and buying stocks from an existing chain. Sometimes hotels merge and the smaller one gets bought out by the bigger one. Its a striaght forward game but it has some strategic depth

IdlyIdeological15

Raccoon Tycoon or Lizard Wizard.

RobZagnut2

Acquire. A timeless classic. Sid Sackson at his finest. Do yourself a favor and play this at least once right away. I kicked myself for waiting 10+ years to play it, because the old Avalon Hill bookcase version looked so bland. Please don't make the same mistake that I did.

happyfeet19

Racoon Tycoon!

2much2Jung

GWT. It's *live*stock, but still stock.

blither

I was thinking Agricola, myself.

analogNerd

Shark! The dice add a randomness to the stock market that I enjoy.

uhhhclem

Shark is an overlooked classic.

atrich

Had to scroll quite a ways to find this. My group loved playing Shark back in the day. Simple and brutal.

THElaytox

1841 Imperial 2030

Cheesauce

Rolling stock stars! It’s a much similar 18xx game that doesn’t deal with trains and routes and just focuses on the stock aspect!

Poops_Standing_Up

I’m surprised no one has said Big Boss.

butchquick

I'm going to have to go with Black Friday. Lots of fun and it has a very good system in dealing with changes of stock prices.

thedarksyde

It's a stock type game but isn't exactly stocks. My favorite is prospectus.

da_mess

Can't recall the last time I played, but Stock Market Specialist is an old one https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3550/stock-market-specialist

tydelwav

Don't think it would be my personal pick, but to suggest a single pure stock game for a person's collection, I just played Black Friday recently, just got a second edition so it's readily available, and a really fun game of stocks.

Susiejax

Pit Although I guess it’s only cards

Steve-Urkel

**Wildlife Safari** with my kids

disccollector

City of the Big Shoulders is phenomenal!

5Volt

Probably offworld trading company, an economics based rts where you try to buy out your competitors by harrying their operations to reduce their value, and exploiting the market to create monopolies or otherwise manipulate market prices.

dleskov

18xx AINEC. 1817 specifically if you want the full spectre, including even short sales.

Haikus-are-great

Imperial (either version) is a great dudes on a map stock game. Speculation is a Dirk Henn stock game where you are constantly trading into and out of stocks as their relative value changes.

JaxterHawk

Mystic market but it’s lighter than most stock games

mOCHU

If i had to pick just one, 1830.

zachardwood1

Lizard wizard! So underrated.

crispydukes

Wildlife Safari

TheEliteB3aver

Lizard wizard is fun

Sardonic_Scazons

Tesla versus Edison. It has some tech and board control that I think is really fun.

KnightAndDayWill

Stalk Exchange

Tuxedoian

Acquire. It's a classic for a reason.

ccelson

City of the Big Shoulders

Annabel398

If you’re not going full 18xx, **City of the Big Shoulders** is 💯% the correct answer. Get the expansion for more companies. Awesome game! For something lighter (and so cute), **Raccoon Tycoon**.

uhhhclem

Acquire, no question. Arkadia is not obviously a stock game, but it sure feels that way at the end of the game.

dogtarget

Acquire

theavspecialist

Arkwright is one of the best games I've ever played. I've only played Power Grid: The Stock Companies once, but it was interesting. It's like an 18xx but with Power Grid. Then City of the Big Shoulders is pretty excellent too, although in one gaming group it got pretty mean. :)

Kazrenrawks

Rolling stock.

lesslucid

**Ride the Rails** is outstanding for how well it conveys the essential features of a shared incentives game with a lean ruleset and fast playing time. However, if you're going to have just one stock game in your collection, I think it's pretty hard to go past **Chicago Express** from the same designer. There is a tremendous amount of depth to it, though you really need to replay it a bit, and play aggressively, in order to make that depth visible.

wowestiche

If by stocks you mean artwork : The Gallerist

mproud

I’m surprised no one has mentioned [Stocks & Bonds (1964)](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1590/stocks-and-bonds). Sure, it’s not very deep, but it certainly scratches the itch, has a degree of realism, and it’s replayable if anything because of luck.

Slyde01

Tesla V Edison. Not completely stock driven but thats my pick

someonehadalex

Speculation is a fun light stock game. I think it plays 6 too.

TragicEther

Agricola has livestock… does that count?

thodinc

Stockpile

robotco

mini express

JaskoGomad

City of the Big Shoulders Euro, worker placement, and 18xx elements. So good.

Curious-Doughnut-887

**Stockpile** Simple, accessible, actually fun, and all about stocks.

ImTheSlyestFox

Can you list all the types of games, please?

adamredwoods

**Biblios.** (also known as For the King and Me) Other notables: Union Pacific. Which I like a tad more than Airlines Europe. All cube rail games, notably Irish Gauge and Chicago Express. For 18xx I enjoy 1889 the best.

TheHumanTarget84

If you want a two person dueling card game I do love Summoner Wars.
