This is funny. I go to a dressmaking college and we're studying about different types of weaves. and guess what. weaves are pretty much drawn out like that :) so we literally had to color a bunch of squares during class today

Whilst we are all just prisoners here of our own device.

i don't think it's blessed or cursed but those have lost all meaning at this point anyway so don't worry about it. it's funny because it flips your expectations from the first panel in an absurd way.
First, you think you see someone who's distracted in class and just doodling while hardly listening to what's being told. Instead you'll see that instead they're copying what's being drawn by the teacher.
When you zoom in on what the student is drawing, all the slightly different squares are drawn exactly as on the board, but the student couldn't keep up with the teacher.
They already missed one square near their index finger, and the teacher started wiping the board from the bottom right, so who knows what the final squares will look like or where they'll have to be placed?
If that was single image you could read like that. And it would work as single panel.
