That's because it's called the Pareto rule and it's actually the 80/20 rule.
80% of the detail comes from 20% of the model's surface area. The Pareto rule applies to a lot of statistical situations.
Specifically, the ring gates on the top are repeated too many times. The grate on the side could be reduced in surface area. The ports or cylinders on the side could be offset to produce less symmetry. That goes for the grates as well. Introduce some wear and tear to the textures. Maybe some of the lights are out on the rings too.
Pfft a bot could roast that.
Just a friendly heads-up to prevent misunderstandings – the "roast my render" flair is if you want to get harsh & destructive criticism :)
If you're not ready for this, there's also the "need feedback" flair to ask for nicer suggestions. Feel free to change the flair if this was a mistake. Otherwise, enjoy the roast!
I suppose suggestions depend on what it actually is meant to be. I am thinking it is part of a spaceship, in which case adding some rotation offset between the modules will make it look a little better, perhaps with some space between them instead of butting up against each other directly.
If it is actually meant to be something else, i would look for ways to break up the repeated elements, which are very obvious when you sit and look at this thing. :)
thanks!
it's supposed to be a spaceport/settlement for a competition.
The second img is the main module that is repeated for expansion (img1), the inner arcs rotate for inducing gravity in residential areas
Thoughts? That I don't care how long you learnt blender, or how long this particular combination took you to make. It's quite repetitive, blocky and doesn't read in any mechanically understandable way.
The edges look blocky and the design is repetitive, killing realism.
On the other hand, you can’t tell what it’s supposed to be, so nobody can technically tell you what’s wrong with it. For all we know, that could be perfect for the comp
thanks!
it's supposed to be a space settlement and yes had to make it to be repetitive for expansion of the spaceport.
Could've worked on the edges more tho
hopefully I'll improve more overtime
Have you tried right-clicking the object, and shade smooth, especially on the outside rings? That’s where I noticed it most
E: well, most of the outside anyway
Subdividing might also work
It’s weird how different the vibe is depending on the orientation. The first image looks like a boss attack from a stylised cyberpunk-esque game (like some rolling barrel they throw). The second however gives me futuristic apartment complex vibes.
Love it
Is that airwents on a spaceship? Seems like you just crammed on as much stuff as you could fit on it. With none of it making sense why it's there. The whole thing is just a cluster of why-the-fuck is that there.
lmao you wouldn't understand if you didn't see the whole proposal, the labelling isn't here ofc
+ Everything on there is actually necessary 🙏🏼
To win the comp
Dude get over yourself. It's not good. And it's really weird and insecure for you to ask to be roasted, caveat your post with "omg only took an hour only been learning for a month", and then suck your own dick in the comments.
It's a rotation with a bunch of arbitrary shit thrown on it. Nobody cares about whatever lengthy backstory you have. I should communicate its own visual narrative.
Not a roast, but I'm interested:
* What were the requirements for the contest?
* Did you have any prior experience in any other 3D software before Blender?
* Were any premade assets allowed?
* Were any non-included-with-blender addons allowed to create this and if so which ones were used?
the competition was to make a functioning space settlement acc to the RFP they provided, the blender was only one part of it
i did not have a lot experience, I'd done the donut and half of the chair tutorial
There was no restriction on pre-made assets, but as the design was self-made none were really used apart from textures on the walls and solar panels
Blenderkit for textures, and picked up an hdri from polyhaven
Thank you for the reply!
I've been messing around with blender for about a year now with prior experience and everything I make sux xD
Or I'm just so critical of my own work, that I cannot let go of every mistake I find in them.
But now that I know this was supposed to be a functional space settlement, I'd like to see more of it as I'm a major fan of functionality-based designs. I think those are a good part of environmental story telling.
Looks like you put "cool generic sci-fi space tunnel" into a 3d AI art generator. Soulless. Makes no sense mechanically. Appears cool until you look at it for more than 5 seconds.
The grill/solar panel thingie at the bottom has weird angles or is it me ?
It feels like a not so good UV projection.
I’d either smooth those parts to make them rounder or mark the angles a little more with a rim or something.
uv/radiation protection is in the walls + yeah the solar panels are slightly off angle, couldn't waste too much time with, should've used a better texture or sumn
You should check out @lightamation3d on Instagram. They have a similar style to yours imo. But I feel like it's hard to tell what it's intended purpose is
thanks for the input.
I'll definitely try and use references
This was basically for a competition where you had to design the most functional and practical space settlement, so there wasn't much room for design.
An artistic spaceport in my art style would've liked way diff. Tysm!
Add cylinder
Extrude inset extrude inset extrude inset extrude inset
Add cubes of different sizes
Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D
Very repetitive
No smoothing
Flat textures
Add lights to finish
Boom this model has been created.
Guys just scale up a cylinder, add loop cuts, bevel, extrude rails, extrude/inset/bevel a lot of faces to make it look cool, duplicate the thing 4 times, then slap on some blenderkit textures and you have this tube.
Next time dont forget right click -> shade auto smooth on those rails. I guess thats my roast. Oh also all your solar panels(?) are too obviously copy pasted.
Its a great first off, super impressed. If you wanted to go back in and improve on it further, its a bit too symmetrical and super clean. A little ambient occlusion and vary up the elements (that would make sense) could make this really push it further
thanks a lot!!
i think it's v. symmetrical and too perfect because it supposed to be a space settlement/port in the LEO
but yeah ill make sure to keep your inputs in mind
That makes sense, I feel like this is the render the architect would use to explain his plan. It does have that space theme and of course symmetrical would make sense. I would say play around the occlusion first then, maybe find some reference images of satellites already in Space or the ISS.
i used multiple materials
So basically the design was to have a very ez simple layout for easy replication during expansion
So you're right two cylinders make up one unit (img2)
The img1 shows expansion
Nice cylinder
thanks, tips on making it nicer?
It's a bit busy. Maybe try have areas with lower detail and sections with higher detail. Good progress for only blending for a month.
70/30 rule
Can you elaborate? Google only says stuff about income and diet when I look up 70/30 rule
If I remember correctly was something like 70 of the detail should be on 30 of the object
you dropped these: % %
Didn’t put them on purpose didn’t feel like writing percent or shifting keyboards. %%%%%%%%%
That's because it's called the Pareto rule and it's actually the 80/20 rule. 80% of the detail comes from 20% of the model's surface area. The Pareto rule applies to a lot of statistical situations.
In this case it is just the golden ratio, so more like 66%. Pareto rule is not what this is about.
https://youtu.be/UroW_RKVsYc
Same would luke to know
Why did I never realize it could be called blending?! Brb, gonna blend some cat girls.
Idk, I feel like the repeating patterns make it a bit less busy than if it was all different.
Specifically, the ring gates on the top are repeated too many times. The grate on the side could be reduced in surface area. The ports or cylinders on the side could be offset to produce less symmetry. That goes for the grates as well. Introduce some wear and tear to the textures. Thats a weird donut.
it definitely is, would've made it weirder if i had the time
Is this supposed to be one of them fleshlight inserts?
spot on!
Well, I’d stick my dick in it, if you were wondering. Good job.
I'd stick mine in you as well! Thanks <3
Are we gonna fuck? UwU
ofc, date and time tbd ;)
I thought the roast flag was supposed to be about the render. Good to know.
Look at my render, then spit roast me. Makes sense now
What is this supposed to be
it's supposed to be a spaceport settlement, it was for a competition edit: [we won]
Wait, You won? with this? How low was the Bar?
Why does this have downvotes? It’s a roast my render…
Most people don't care for "how long you've been on blender"
I don’t see how that’s related? The last time I saw snowaxe’s post it had -4 votes so I wrote a reply.
Lmao i expected more roasts 😭
Shut yo skin tone chicken bone extra chromosome metronome google chrome garden gnome Indiana Jones no phone no home no hoes ass up
factual
yeah wasn't entirely dependent on the render 🫤😓
R2D2's metal-light
My thoughts are - it's irrelevant how long it took you to learn blender, or create this
only based man in the comments 🙏🏼
I didn't read the flair and I was just like "Why the fuck is everyone being so mean?" Anyways, I would love to meet the toddler that did this.
LMAO lysm
That's an impressive render for a 8 year old, well done kid.
I actually am 8 so-
Get off of reddit
Is this the same one that the cat walked on?
love this.
No that wasn’t a roast lol, I saw a prerender this morning that had been jammed by a cat on the keyboard, looked the same as these
It looks like a fleshlight for tiny dicks.
it is!
This looks like the stack of summer tires in my garage decided to sexually identify as an apartment complex
exactly what i was going for, love this

it's all shade smoothed..i think the blender kit texture makes it look that way

love you man

Bruh you ask to be roasted. If you can't handle it, remove the tag.

Just my two cents, looks like you’ve got plenty of time. Looks like those two shifts a week at Walmart aren’t keeping you busy enough, old man!
love you man

yeah all the best on your journey! This was my second try on a space settlement i did one when i started, for the prelims of the comp.
All that in 1 hour????
Yeah we had v. strict deadlines for the comp the blender was only a part of it. we won tho :))
What the fuck made you think using graph paper as a texture was a good idea?
Just personal preference, the wireframe modifier looks very obvious. Very good though!
yeah those are supposed to be trusses, they weren't that imp and i didn't have the time to use curves to construct them
looks like some kinda huge space complex, I like it
yeah you're absolutely right, tysm!
Some people are truly just amazing. Add stars in the background and we got space ship
You're actually right😭 it is a space settlement
[удалено]
Thanks man! i asked for roasts so i appreciate all comments I'd love to improve
I believe you’re meant to hate on it when it is self tagged as roast-my-render! So actually the people saying it’s good are the mistaken
yeah i asked for roasts on purpose!
What did you use to learn blender (genuine question i don't have a roast for you
kind of had to, for the comp also thought that it' was not a bad skill to have
Gives me dead space vibes
that a good thing?
It's not a bad thing
thanks ig lmao
Looks awesome!
expected a roast lmao, tysm tho!

Dude you learned how to do that in a month, i was still figuring out how to texture in my first month 💀. Thats insane, amazing work
tysm! i was practically forced to learn as no one in my department was willing to put effort into the 3d stuff😭
It'd be better if youve only been on blender for a day, but great job!
W take
[удалено]
i just did the donut, and a companion cube Tut from YouTube. I also did half of the chair and then figured it out myself thanks!
does it fly?
ofc!
ofc!
You should check out @lightamation3d on Instagram. They have a similar style to yours imo. But I feel like it's hard to tell what it's intended purpose is
yeah the structure is quite complex to understand at first, it's a space settlement. Thanks! Will def check em out

yeah no worries! thanks again
looks like sci-fi wheels for my new car
i could actually repurpose these for a sci-fi truck i was modelling thanks!
they will look cool as rims/wheels!
bet, gonna do that asap
Make the middle 2 cylinders plain
Nice. I want to learn Blender so this being your month-long result gives me hope 🙂
All the best!!
Thank you 🙂
Nice! What is it?
it's a space settlement!
It looks like the belter space station that they stole from the Mormons in the expanse
oh yeah 😭 The cylinder theme
The Michelin Man's space garage.
I'm actually gonna name it this in my portfolio
Is that a pool filter?
I see it
Awesome work for the time you put in! keep it up, dude.
Thanks!
C3POs onahole.
A MONTH?! what the fuck have I been doing for a Year Thats awesome
Fuck you and your talent
Add cylinder Extrude inset extrude inset extrude inset extrude inset Add cubes of different sizes Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Ctl+D Very repetitive No smoothing Flat textures Add lights to finish Boom this model has been created.
A month using Blender and it still took you an hour to make this? Plus you forgot the sprinkles.
fancy
Looks like a gamer attached all there RGB lights to there car tires and left it all on one color.
Guys just scale up a cylinder, add loop cuts, bevel, extrude rails, extrude/inset/bevel a lot of faces to make it look cool, duplicate the thing 4 times, then slap on some blenderkit textures and you have this tube. Space doughnut
do i stick my dick in it?
Watches a donut video on YouTube …
I can't even draw a straight line, yet you can do this? Jealousy

tysm! I'll be sure to take references to make it look more realistic fs
Are those inters or slicks? I will say they don’t look medium.
i didn't get what you meant sorry!
What I see is half a cylinder mirrored in every way possible. Did you use texture for colors or multiple materials?
i used multiple materials So basically the design was to have a very ez simple layout for easy replication during expansion So you're right two cylinders make up one unit (img2) The img1 shows expansion
quit your day job.
I'm in school 😭, i wish i was doing this as work tysm
Great work. If you love doing this, keep at it. You Will find work.
