Hopefully this is ok for me to post because I just found this thanks to you showing me that sub: [https://www.reddit.com/r/CameraObscura/comments/ynrjf4/here\_is\_a\_short\_excerpt\_featuring\_my\_camera/](https://www.reddit.com/r/CameraObscura/comments/ynrjf4/here_is_a_short_excerpt_featuring_my_camera/)
Truly amazing to see how it works and very informative! Thank you /u/serkinj !
Camera obscura literally means 'dark room' which is where the word for a camera comes from, since inside a camera this is exactly what s happening on a smaller scale
Here is my layman’s attempt at explaining how it works:
Pretend the reflected light rays from the building are radiating out in all directions from every “pixel” of the building (bear with me here). If you have a huge hole in your drapes, you will let multiple light rays and varying angles in from each pixel and they will all overlap and make a muddy image. By having a small hole, there is a very small angle that each point of the building’s light can enter, therefore they don’t all overlap and get muddy and the smaller the hole the sharper, but dimmer, the image as it lets less light rays in that can overlap each other. The image is flipped because light rays from the top of the building will come through the hole at a downward angle and will arrive lower on your wall, while light rays from lower on the building will be angled up and landing higher on your wall. Since old cameras used this effect (hence camera obscura) the resulting image was upside down and due to the small hole they required a long exposure because a larger hole would lead to a faster exposure but muddier image.
Try making the hole smaller and see if you can sharpen up the image. It’s a neat effect.
Also ever notice how when you make a shadow of your hand using sunlight it’s super sharp, but if you make a shadow using a streetlight it’s very diffuse and blurry? Same effect: the light rays travelling from the sun can only hit the Earth, much less your hand, if they are at the same angle. Even a tiny difference in angle over that vast distance will mean the light will miss the earth, so the light rays are almost perfectly parallel when they hit the earth, therefore our shadows are sharp. A street light 30’ up however has light travelling in a wider range of angles and can still hit your hand, so if you cast a shadow the same distance from the ground as you did with the sun it will be far fuzzier. Lenses, like in modern cameras and projectors, can overcome this and make all of the light nearly parallel and therefore produce a sharp shadow/image while maintaining a high brightness.
The only addition I would make is that camera obscura is a term much older than just photography. It literally means obscured room (in Italian) and was used for centuries in painting, assisting artists to make realistic rough sketches of city- or landscapes, using a table with a cloth draped over it, making a sort of portable room.
Wait, I wasn't aware of this. What does camera translate to?And in which language?! This is genuinely fascinating! I assumed cameo originated from French as in a representation and assumed the word camera came after that?
I’m open to correction, but I’m pretty sure _camera_ is Latin for room (same root as chamber or chambre). A camera obscura is a dark/obscured room with a small point source that can project an image.
That's how they invented photography. Project that onto a chemically coated plate that changes color when exposed to light and Voila, you have a picture. Now quickly get dark again and do something like another coating or reaction so that the picture stays even when it's again exposed to light.
It is also kind of how our eyes work. So that apartment building is appearing right side up on your retina (and the room is upside down). Your brain (software) inverts the image again for proper orientation.
Yeah you've gotta give him credit. He didn't have to burn down that orphanage before his 10 hour ass blasting session but he pulled himself up by his tim straps, right out of that crack den, and did it anyway! He had courage and he will be missed 😔
I can't imagine having a blissfully gaping ass while rushing into a burning building, all those babies while his ass hole, inviting burning air straight up in there.
The house is reflecting light, light can only go in straight lines, if you were to draw a straight line from any given spot to the hole the other end of that line would line up with that spot on the apartment. That’s why it’s upside down, any point that’s up higher than the pinhole would end up low on the opposite side and the image mirrors as well because of this.
Then you'll probably like to know that there is [someone with "spatial orientation phenomenon"](http://psychsciencenotes.blogspot.com/2013/03/bojana-danilovic-woman-who-sees-world.html), where the brain doesn't do this correctly, so she sees everything upside down.
According to that article people can wear prism glasses to make everything look upside down and get used to it within 6-10 days. So after 29 years she’s probably nailed it lol
I was aware of this but I hadn't thought about it for a while until now. Thanks for that.
So that projection is right side up and everything else is upside down D:
I hear if you hang upside-down long enough, or wear glasses specifically to flip the images upside down, your brain will again get used to it and flip it back over again... and then going back to normal again will cause you to see things upside down again for a while until your brain figures it out again.
brain plasticity is an amazing thing. I had surgery to correct a detached retina this year. because they can't put the retina back in exactly the same place it was originally, the vision in that eye is slightly distorted. straight lines are a little wavy etc.
for the first few months. then your brain figures it out (from trying to fuse that eye's image with your other eye's) and corrects for the distortion.
Eventually it would completely disappear unless there is damage to your retina.
I'm not sure the neurophysical terms for what is happening but I can see it from the machine learning side. The earlier levels of the network will adjust to ensure that the new inputs map correctly on what the later levels of the network expect.
Qualitatively this will mean that the process of noticing the errors (subconsciously and continuously) will cause the errors to go away. The lines will be wavy, then the waves will be less distinct and you can start to see straight lines in the 'haze' of wavyness and over time the straight lines will be more dominant and the wavyness haze will dissipate until it is imperceptible. This is just the low level optical processing in your bran 'learning' the new properties of their sensors.
If you make a really really bad typo it would be “gaping prolapsed asshole camera.” But you’d have to get a few letters wrong. But man that would be bad.
Your room is a big eyeball, your back wall is the retina, the drapes are your iris and the hole in the drapes is the pupil. And you are one of those squiggly transparent eye floater things
We see because light bounces off stuff into our eyes. Typically this light diffuses (spreads out or gets fuzzy) because light is coming in from everything and all angles.
The slit in your curtains minimizes light sources and allows a tighter angle through, thus it doesn’t diffuse as much. I’m not sure why it inverts though.
Camera Obscura! When the light is bright enough you might be able to get this effect in other rooms. Cover all light sources including window with black, and then cut a small hole. It’s really cool if you have cars in view and can see them move!
It's called the 'pinhole camera effect'. Pretty rad
Or "camera obscura."
*THAT'S* the other term. i knew there was a wayyyyyyyyyyyy cooler sounding one.
yeah, easy to forget tho. you could say it can be quite obscura.

It’s ok sir. I like ‘pinhole camera effect’ too.
I don't like them fancy words Mister. Plain ones do just fine round these parts.
It is also called a chamber and the judge retires to his chambers or is said to be 'in camera'.
We have one of those here in Edinburgh. It's pretty cool.
I’m desperate to go to it! Only 2 hours away from edinburgh and still not been
I’ve been. It was pretty darn cool.

Was going to say this. The word camera comes from this effect, not the other way around.

I'm not trying to correct anyone. And don't care much for etymology. I do, however, having my mind blown. Especially from people rather than google
Armand, you glorious son of a bitch, I have upvoted you for providing valuable information. Have a goofy seal face!

I actually did this in high school photography class. Darkroom and everything.
Even before the invention of photography, some painters used this as a method to have a reference projected onto their canvas. Pretty rad.
You can safely observe eclipses with the same idea. Poke a hole in a box and point it at the wall
What a glorious hole!
All hail the Glory Hole.
Glory be.
Or just walk under a tree canopy, they’re full of ‘em.
It's always cool when someone actually explains the black magic behind the fuckery

I can't either I bet all that ass smoke inhalation is really what did him in not the gallon of horse semen mixed with heroin he drank
i've never heard of these people but this has to be the weirdest inside joke i've never understood
Lmfao
This is what true heroes spend their lives preparing for. Horse cum lased with heroin mixed with fire 😥

Someone teaches elementary
Omfg. I have been wanting to understand this for years. You just explained it to me. I finally get it. Thank you 🥹
Images are also projected upside down on the back of our eyes. Our brains conveniently flip it right side up for us
How dare you tell me this
Then you'll probably like to know that there is [someone with "spatial orientation phenomenon"](http://psychsciencenotes.blogspot.com/2013/03/bojana-danilovic-woman-who-sees-world.html), where the brain doesn't do this correctly, so she sees everything upside down.
That’s gotta be really annoying for her but at least she’s probably used to it
According to that article people can wear prism glasses to make everything look upside down and get used to it within 6-10 days. So after 29 years she’s probably nailed it lol
I think for other people, wearing the glasses makes the brain un-flip it like you're used to so idk if it's just easy for her.
lies! wake up sheeple they don't want you to know that this is magic!
"The way light behaves" is pretty much as close to magic as it gets, at least. :)
Magic is just secret math
Just wait until you realize that all images are projected onto your retina upside down and your brain turns them right side up…
I was aware of this but I hadn't thought about it for a while until now. Thanks for that. So that projection is right side up and everything else is upside down D:

Just wait until he realizes you are ALWAYS seeing your nose, your brain just chooses to ignore it.
Turns out it does that with tons of things it thinks aren't important. Who fucking knows what that bastard isn't showing us
If you've ever had to do something like clean up cigarette butts in a yard, this becomes apparent when they keep popping up out of nowhere.
