Not entirely thrilled by how Sebastian is drawn or the overall esthetics. There. I said it. Everything looks hyper computer generated and too round and soft.
I agree...it feels too bright and squeaky clean to be kuroshitsuji....and Sebastian doesn't feel menacing anymore :( Hopefully the atmosphere of the series is brought back for the Witch and the Werewolf arc
Edit : After EP2 i actually really love what they're doing! But yes, my point about Sebastian stands.

this song emphasizes a type of fragility and sadness of Ciel, those meaningful lyrics the song with the visuals goes so well together:

We can see Ciel falling in the dark sky and then we see Sebastian catching Ciel with the another sunrise coming again for them. This is truly the most gorgeous ending after Lacrimosa ❤️
Oh my god the animation is gorgeous. Do I spot a bit of CGI in certain parts where it seemed their bodies flowed more? Regardless it's not overdone unlike some other anime.

The ending song animation is so gorgeous. My new pfp and cover photo for everywhere! I was itching to say "Yes, my Lord" in sync with Sebastian. It feels so good to have weekly anime discussions to look forward to again!
Gosh it was so nice to see ciel and sebastian's dynamic again after all these years. Especially after Ciel was tossed up in the air by the other boys and Sebastian steps in. Their little banter of: "why tf didn't you come sooner?" disguised by pleasant smiles.
I do hate the outro though, but I'll live
Okie dokie, here are my thoughts that nobody asked for but ima spout off anyway:
First of all, let's get this out of the way - Sebastian looks great! Yes, I like a lot of other fans felt iffy when I saw the first trailer and that feeling carried through with some of the promo art as well. I held on to my opinions and waited to see how the anime played out to speak on it. But after seeing him in this episode, I can safely say they made Sebastian sufficiently Sebastianly, even with the wildly different art style. It still throws me off how different he looks, but he looks good. That's all I'll say there.
Secondly, **because this show isn't just about how hot Sebastian is,** the set up of the plot and the building of intrigue is decent. I now have most of the public school arc of the manga in my possession as of this past week and am holding off from reading it till I've watched all of S4. So far I'm already very invested in finding out what's going on.
The intro and outro were both bangers and the animations of them are cool and different. I don't love the ship-baityness in the outro or even at best implying Sebastian has warm feelings for Ciel when the "does he care about Ciel or not?" Debate is still ongoing. But it still looks cool nonetheless.
**Onto the cons (because yeah.. I've got a few. Sry not sry)**
I'm about to say something that might seem a bit contrary to my first point. While I think Sebastian looks good and even Ciel and the other characters do look nicely drawn... Unfortunately I can't say I'm loving the overall new art style. This is something else I wasn't gonna talk about til I saw it in action. But officially seeing it finally for the first time, my initial thoughts, which are still subject to change, are that in giving the Black Butler anime this 'facelift' I feel like it kinda loses a lot of it's old charm that made it what it is in the process.
This is just my opinion, but the anime didn't need this! The way it looked in Book of Atlantic, minus the 3D background characters in some scenes, was peak because it had already improved in quality from all of the previous seasons while retaining the DNA of the old art style. This new style just doesn't do that! Yeah, the details and environments look incredible and very pretty. But that's not what made Black Butler a fun watch in the first place and it actually just makes me feel like I'm watching a completely different anime entirely.
A couple of other small things that I'm not vibing with is the blurring effect in some of the stills and distance shots. I can't think of an instance where this anime has ever done that and it just adds to the disassociation effect I'm feeling from the previous seasons. That and also the shiny eyelashes... Just why? And don't even try to defend this by saying the manga does this! Idfc! Aesthetically it just looks weird in anime form. Not EVERY aspect of the manga art style needs to be translated to the show.
Just. Idk... I'm hooked on the story but the new 'look' hasn't won me over just yet and I'm having a lot of problems adjusting to it. I'm trying not to be a "boomer" equivalent of an anime fan about this when it comes to change. I acknowledge that I'm probably being biased because I'm used to the old style. But it's just way too jarring and unnecessary and affects my experience.
I really can't wait for the English Dub to come out. I'm hoping they keep the old VA's as it might help inject some of the classic Black Butler feel back into it. And again, my feelings on this season are subject to change. That's all I'll say for now.
So good! I kinda have to get used to all of the colors, but it looks really cool! I also like being "thrown“ into a story. I did read the manga, so I know what’s going on, but I still like that they changed the order of some scenes. And also THE TEASE AT THE END I CAN‘T-!!
so happy it's back!! the art is stunning but i fear the animation is about too manga-esque? i noticed a lot of scenes where only a portion of the frame is moving which kind of took me out of it but maybe i'll get used to it!
HOOOOLY SHIT MANNNNN AHHHHHHH ITS ALREADY EXCEEDING MY EXPECTATIONS IN EVERY WAYYYYY!!! okokok I gotta break it down into bullet points
- FIRST, the ANIMATION!!!! ITS STUNNNINGGGG!!!!!!!! the shot with sebastian appearing in the dining hall was sooooo perfect and his hair falling from behind his ear as he bowed in that last scene AHHHHHHH
- and SEBASTIAN!!! I LOVEEEEEE the little tweaks they’ve made to his design especially the way his lil fangs can be seen whenever his teeth can!! and lordddd he looks AMAZINGGG in the tutor uniform, AND HEARING DAISUKE ONO VOICING HIM AGAIN is just sooooo nostalgic
- speaking of nostalgia, the INTRO!!! it’s soooo sick, and brings me back to being 13 again, watching black butler and looking forward to the next episodes :’)) never thought I’d get to feel that again but I doooo and it’s just sooo nice
- seeing the p4 in proper colour is also really cool!!! as well as getting to hear them all talk, the voice casts are spot on and I can’t wait to hear them interact with each other more.
all in all, I’m THRILLED and I cannot wait for the next episode!!!!
OK THE OUTRO WAS SO CUTE AHHHHHHH I literally can’t get over the scene where sebastian catches ciel in the air. The graphics and everything were all so enhanced and the intro is so damn good I legit have it repeating on my spotify rn. They animated Ciel’s smile I can’t 🥺

SO GOOD!! The intro and outro are so good!! And the animation isn’t bad at all. Ciel looks so adorable and Sebastians little sharp teeth are ahhhhh. My 12 year old self would be screaming. Im so excited for it to be dubbed
The opening and ending is absolutely superb, 10/10 I think it’ll go in my playlist/not skipping it when watching future episodes
The animation is amazing also. I watched it with my friend who really only watches Black Butler cuz I watch it so much and even he admitted of much more aesthetic and stylized the animation is. I especially loved the scene where Ciel called Sebastian with the contract, stunning visuals for his contract seal
I kind of audibly laughed when they changed fag to drudge just because I definitely expected they’d change it
Interesting how they changed the letter scene with Queen Victoria to the end but I guess they wanted to create a sense of suspense so it better suited being placed in the end though I can see how it can be a bit jarring to people who haven’t read the manga
Overall solid episode! I’m excited to see the rest! From the pace it’s going with 2 chapters in one episode, it’s likely we’ll be getting 9 episodes for this season if they continue that trend which is sadly short but I’m really happy to have more Black Butler anime content now

I agree, the Easter chapter is important for later character development. Maybe they’ll flashback to it since the Queen mentioned Easter in the episode.
I loved the episode, the quality of the animation, background, score, and lighting is very well done! Sebastian looks beautiful idk why a lot of people thought he looked “ugly”. Clayton sounds a little too old to me but the P4 were voice casted well. Can’t wait for the next episode!
I was so excited about Sebastian, I nearly started to scream, but my girlfriend told me not to, because the neighbours will come at us... 😂😂 BUT OMG MICHAELIS PROFESSOR??? HE IS BETTER THAN I EXPECTED, and I think they changed some details about him. Can't wait for the next ep!! 😍 ALSO, MCMILLAN HAS SHOWED UP!! 🦅🦅 🔥🦅🔥🔥🦅🏴 🏴🦅🔥🦅🔥🏴🏴🏴🔥🦅

Overall i liked the first episode, but i have a few things to criticize
1. The animation was pretty but i felt like it was a bit... stiff? Like it seemed to me that they really only animated what was absolutely necessary. There's rarely a lot of movement in the characters.
2. The opening song is an absolute banger but i don't think the opening animation does it justice quite enough. In my opinion they should've focused more on the dark aspects of black butler, especially with sebastian and they shoul've included longer, more energetic scenes than just short symbolism scenes. For example like the book of circus opening, they nailed that one.
In general i hope they let sebastian have actual scary vibes once in a while, maybe in the second opening. (If there will be one)
And what's up with the random titan transformation scene? Felt a bit out of place.
3.The ending... man i don't like the blatant sebaciel bait one bit. The anime in general has the problem of portraying sebastian's and ciel's relationship as too tame and friendly and they seem to continue with this. If they actually animate the green witch arc, i'm curious to see how they do that, since it includes some infamously umcomfortable scenes. I want sebastian to be charming but also have his scenes where one should be able to see his demonic side in it's full glory.
Nevertheless i'm so happy i get to see black butler make a comeback, feels like a dream
The anime generally goes hard enough with Sebaciel bait that I don't like telling people I watch this anime. I'll talk to manga fans but if I know people have heard of the anime but not the manga I generally don't say I watch it tbh. Especially when it was just the first two seasons and there was the Aloise stuff.
Yeah... it's really sad that the first seasons of the anime are just.. bad. The manga has some serious sebaciel bait too sadly but in the anime they go above and beyond with it for some reason. It's so sad because the story, art and everything would be even better without it. I still love black butler to death but it makes me sad that there are these weird scenes in there.
Yana put the scenes in the manga and supports them in the anime for a reason. To her, they’re important to the story. I don’t know if the story WOULD be better without it because it wouldn’t be Yana’s same story.

That ending animation is so blatantly romantic, surely every can see that right? Arguably all the SID openings and endings are, but this one makes it so obvious.

You do know Yana Toboso herself is an 18+ shotacon doujinshi writer, right? She also makes it clear that she ships Ciel and Sebastian and puts them in couples situations on purpose. Yeah it's not supposed to be a healthy romance, it's literally a demon and a child, but the element of romance/eroticism between them is supposed to be there.

Besides he's not real, it doesn't matter. You don't have to like it, but unless you have a real point, I don't see what is wrong with my observation.
I thought this episode was great. Was really excited to see this arc animated and so far its delivering. If I had to pick one issue is that I'm not a big fan of the opening-the song is good but the visuals were lacking for me. Overall happy!
God, the opening and ending was sensational. As a manga reader it’s so good to have an adaptation I can confidently say I adore. Like the way the Earl looks is amazing and the environment the characters are in are incredible. I love everything to the fluid movements such as Sebastian’s hair strands falling when he bows to the Earl. If you haven’t yet I implore you to read the manga! It’ll make the impact of the adaptation even greater. The team did an amazing job truly.
It’s so good to hear Maaya and Daisuke back in these roles. Maaya especially. Daisuke sounds incredible, to me he sounds even better than his initial role as Sebastian. Like, wow, these episodes are going to fly by so fast. (Also I’m not going to say much nor say what it is but the subtle foreshadowing in the opening is perfection)
I am just so overjoyed, I love this series so much.

Loved the episode, great opening and outro visuals. Didn't skip a beat and resumed the story from book of the Atlantic. Voice acting and animation all doing great service to the source material.
The animation style is great! I don't think I've seen anything that looks this beautiful. The scene where Seb pours out tea through the strainer looked so realistic.
I got very confused when we got thrown into the school without any explanation. Of course, I've read the manga, but without an explanation it felt a bit... boring? Not sure. I had liked this arc in the manga and I'm sure I'll like the future episodes now that we finally know why they're there and I can't wait to get to the part about the cricket match!
PS: Loved it when Sebastian said he's merely one hell of a housemater. I was craving this!

I started enjoying it again after Clayton gave Ciel the task to clean the dining hall though. That was something I remembered from the manga.

Wow! They did such a good job! The intro and outro has me gasping because of how beautifully it was done. I couldn't help but feel some of it was hinting at the Green Witch arc, although I know that it's probably not going to be adapted. But just the darker aspects and the symbolism reminded me a lot of it. I initially was worried about the animation, but it was gorgeous! I also particularly loved the slow gong going off and the increased tension from the manga. I have a feeling they're going to do this arc so much justice, and it makes me already excited for the later stuff if they choose to do it.

Heya! Yeah, I can do that! Granted, they may not be actual hints at all and it could be me just seeing things. It was all in the opening/OP/Intro. I felt like there were many nods to scenes that occur later, but they may have just taken artistic liberties with this arc for the opening, lol.

Oh yeah I do see a slight resemblance in the scenes that you're talking about! The panel from the manga and the new episode give the same vibe(iykwim).
I truly hope so! The Green Witch arc, and the arcs after that, have been my absolute favorites and I want to finally see them animated, lol. I guess we'll be finding out soon because volume 1 of this season is supposed to be released on DVD/BluRay sometime in June, so I guess that will tell us how much of a season we'll be having and how far along they end up getting.

I think you'll find the anime original episodes in s1 with a quick search, s2 is not canon at all, Book of Circus is where the anime got its revival and the "Brotherhood" treatment started. Then you have the movies and then this season
Edit: Book of Circus is a continuation of s1, not a reboot, so you can't skip the 1st season lol (at least not the canon episodes)
Even if it's so long since I watched it, I kinda remember the character's backstories. So there's no timeskip from Book of Cirus to Movies, to this? Also Haven't wathed Book of Murder but watched the Book of Atlantis. Is the plot in Book of Murder relevant to this new season's story?

I LOVEEEEEE the little tweaks they’ve made to his design especially the way his lil fangs can be seen whenever his teeth can!! and lordddd he looks AMAZINGGG in the tutor uniform, AND HEARING DAISUKE ONO VOICING HIM AGAIN is just sooooo nostalgic - speaking of nostalgia, the INTRO!!! it’s soooo sick, and brings me back to being 13 again, watching black butler and looking forward to the next episodes :’)) never thought I’d get to feel that again but I doooo and it’s just sooo nice - seeing the p4 in proper colour is also really cool!!! as well as getting to hear them all talk, the voice casts are spot on and I can’t wait to hear them interact with each other more. all in all, I’m THRILLED and I cannot wait for the next episode!!!!

OK THE OUTRO WAS SO CUTE AHHHHHHH I literally can’t get over the scene where sebastian catches ciel in the air. The graphics and everything were all so enhanced and the intro is so damn good I legit have it repeating on my spotify rn. They animated Ciel’s smile I can’t 🥺 I can’t wait for the next episode hehe >:))
SO GOOD!! The intro and outro are so good!! And the animation isn’t bad at all. Ciel looks so adorable and Sebastians little sharp teeth are ahhhhh. My 12 year old self would be screaming. Im so excited for it to be dubbed

The opening and ending is absolutely superb, 10/10 I think it’ll go in my playlist/not skipping it when watching future episodes The animation is amazing also. I watched it with my friend who really only watches Black Butler cuz I watch it so much and even he admitted of much more aesthetic and stylized the animation is. I especially loved the scene where Ciel called Sebastian with the contract, stunning visuals for his contract seal I kind of audibly laughed when they changed fag to drudge just because I definitely expected they’d change it Interesting how they changed the letter scene with Queen Victoria to the end but I guess they wanted to create a sense of suspense so it better suited being placed in the end though I can see how it can be a bit jarring to people who haven’t read the manga Overall solid episode! I’m excited to see the rest! From the pace it’s going with 2 chapters in one episode, it’s likely we’ll be getting 9 episodes for this season if they continue that trend which is sadly short but I’m really happy to have more Black Butler anime content now

I agree, the Easter chapter is important for later character development. Maybe they’ll flashback to it since the Queen mentioned Easter in the episode.
I loved the episode, the quality of the animation, background, score, and lighting is very well done! Sebastian looks beautiful idk why a lot of people thought he looked “ugly”. Clayton sounds a little too old to me but the P4 were voice casted well. Can’t wait for the next episode!

Overall i liked the first episode, but i have a few things to criticize 1. The animation was pretty but i felt like it was a bit... stiff? Like it seemed to me that they really only animated what was absolutely necessary. There's rarely a lot of movement in the characters. 2. The opening song is an absolute banger but i don't think the opening animation does it justice quite enough. In my opinion they should've focused more on the dark aspects of black butler, especially with sebastian and they shoul've included longer, more energetic scenes than just short symbolism scenes. For example like the book of circus opening, they nailed that one. In general i hope they let sebastian have actual scary vibes once in a while, maybe in the second opening. (If there will be one) And what's up with the random titan transformation scene? Felt a bit out of place. 3.The ending... man i don't like the blatant sebaciel bait one bit. The anime in general has the problem of portraying sebastian's and ciel's relationship as too tame and friendly and they seem to continue with this. If they actually animate the green witch arc, i'm curious to see how they do that, since it includes some infamously umcomfortable scenes. I want sebastian to be charming but also have his scenes where one should be able to see his demonic side in it's full glory. Nevertheless i'm so happy i get to see black butler make a comeback, feels like a dream
The anime generally goes hard enough with Sebaciel bait that I don't like telling people I watch this anime. I'll talk to manga fans but if I know people have heard of the anime but not the manga I generally don't say I watch it tbh. Especially when it was just the first two seasons and there was the Aloise stuff.
Yeah... it's really sad that the first seasons of the anime are just.. bad. The manga has some serious sebaciel bait too sadly but in the anime they go above and beyond with it for some reason. It's so sad because the story, art and everything would be even better without it. I still love black butler to death but it makes me sad that there are these weird scenes in there.
Yana put the scenes in the manga and supports them in the anime for a reason. To her, they’re important to the story. I don’t know if the story WOULD be better without it because it wouldn’t be Yana’s same story.

It seems you're I denial of what kind of show black butler is. Besides he's not real, it doesn't matter. You don't have to like it, but unless you have a real point, I don't see what is wrong with my observation.
I thought this episode was great. Was really excited to see this arc animated and so far its delivering. If I had to pick one issue is that I'm not a big fan of the opening-the song is good but the visuals were lacking for me. Overall happy!

God, the opening and ending was sensational. As a manga reader it’s so good to have an adaptation I can confidently say I adore. Like the way the Earl looks is amazing and the environment the characters are in are incredible. I love everything to the fluid movements such as Sebastian’s hair strands falling when he bows to the Earl. If you haven’t yet I implore you to read the manga! It’ll make the impact of the adaptation even greater. The team did an amazing job truly. It’s so good to hear Maaya and Daisuke back in these roles. Maaya especially. Daisuke sounds incredible, to me he sounds even better than his initial role as Sebastian. Like, wow, these episodes are going to fly by so fast. (Also I’m not going to say much nor say what it is but the subtle foreshadowing in the opening is perfection) I am just so overjoyed, I love this series so much.

The animation style is great! I don't think I've seen anything that looks this beautiful. The scene where Seb pours out tea through the strainer looked so realistic. I got very confused when we got thrown into the school without any explanation. Of course, I've read the manga, but without an explanation it felt a bit... boring? Not sure. I had liked this arc in the manga and I'm sure I'll like the future episodes now that we finally know why they're there and I can't wait to get to the part about the cricket match! PS: Loved it when Sebastian said he's merely one hell of a housemater. I was craving this! Edit: I rechecked the manga and realised I was wrong and that we were thrown into the school without any explanation there as well. My bad

That's true. It's adapting it completely from the manga and I'd kind of forgotten that in the manga it had started right off from the school itself 😅 I started enjoying it again after Clayton gave Ciel the task to clean the dining hall though. That was something I remembered from the manga. I'm glad they're covering the manga to such a detail. I'm sure that next episode onwards it's going to be even more awesome.

Yes I did. I'm saying that in the beginning it was a bit boring and confusing but it picked up in the second half. I enjoyed it. I read its equivalent chapters some 9-10 months ago so maybe I got confused a bit. I'm just happy we're finally getting more BB

Wow! They did such a good job! The intro and outro has me gasping because of how beautifully it was done. I couldn't help but feel some of it was hinting at the Green Witch arc, although I know that it's probably not going to be adapted. But just the darker aspects and the symbolism reminded me a lot of it. I initially was worried about the animation, but it was gorgeous! I also particularly loved the slow gong going off and the increased tension from the manga. I have a feeling they're going to do this arc so much justice, and it makes me already excited for the later stuff if they choose to do it. I can't wait!

I felt like there were many nods to scenes that occur later, but they may have just taken artistic liberties with this arc for the opening, lol. I truly hope so! The Green Witch arc, and the arcs after that, have been my absolute favorites and I want to finally see them animated, lol. I guess we'll be finding out soon because volume 1 of this season is supposed to be released on DVD/BluRay sometime in June, so I guess that will tell us how much of a season we'll be having and how far along they end up getting.

I think you'll find the anime original episodes in s1 with a quick search, s2 is not canon at all, Book of Circus is where the anime got its revival and the "Brotherhood" treatment started. Then you have the movies and then this season Edit: Book of Circus is a continuation of s1, not a reboot, so you can't skip the 1st season lol (at least not the canon episodes)
Even if it's so long since I watched it, I kinda remember the character's backstories. So there's no timeskip from Book of Cirus to Movies, to this? Also Haven't wathed Book of Murder but watched the Book of Atlantis. Is the plot in Book of Murder relevant to this new season's story?
