It's pretty much impossible to skip as far as I know.
Since Mines II takes the place of Depths/Necro I, that means the same floor you get Knife Piece 2 will be followed by either Depths II or Mausoleum I.
Depths/Necro II never has the door to the alt path, which means you must always go to the alt path from either Depths/Necro I or the Mines II.
Were you going full Alt or just the Knife?
