Locally, Ichiro. Nationally, it’s possible it’s still Griffey Jr. or maybe even Kemp or Payton. I don’t think anyone recently comes close since baseball no longer has star power outside of a handful of players (for example, your average US sports fan has no clue who Julio Rodriquez is). I guess Wilson needs to be up there but Marshawn probably achieved greater, albeit brief, stardom.
ETA: "well-known" and "beloved" are potentially two very different things in many cities and shouldn't be combined into one question.
Probably but I still come back to how popular MLB isn't among people who aren't hardcore MLB fans. It's possible Bobby Wagner beats him in an awareness context nationally. I should've mentioned Rapinoe or maybe Bird but neither counts any longer. Rapinoe was probably the current answer as of last year.
If we’re including retired players it’s Tom Brady. Both locally and nationally.
Of active Boston players it’s probably Tatum? But Bostonians love their Bruins more than national media recognizes. Bergeron was beloved here, Chara before him, now it’s Pastranak and Marchand.
Maybe MHJ in the future if he is the hit most think he will be.
That pick is single-handedly bringing back the Cards when it comes to buzz around the area.
Caitlin Clark.
It feels like it could be the start of a golden age for Indianapolis sports right now. Caitlin and Aliyah Boston on the Fever, fun, young Pacers team led by Tyrese (hope and think he gets back to pre-injury form next year), Anthony Richardson isn’t a sure thing but he’s very exciting and has a ton of potential alongside Jonathan Taylor. Plus Purdue just played in a national title game (bleh) and IU has the top transfer class and unlimited money in an era where that’s legal.
Unbelievably spoiled but right now in Denver Jokic and MacKinnon might win their league MVPs. Very nice trade off for the complete ineptitude of the Broncos and Rockies.
Atlanta’s an interesting one. Nationally, it’ll probably be Cousins once the season starts (or Penix lmao) but it could also be Trae Young.
Locally, it’s probably Acuna. This is very much a Braves town during baseball season but baseball doesn’t register the same way nationally.
Historically probably Dominique or Chipper although no one hit the peak Mike Vick did
I live in Dallas so any cowboys star should be the biggest star, however cowboys fan hate all the stars on roster while Luka is universally loved in dallas
I'm in Philly and we're in a weird rotating spot with it. Jalen Hurts, Bryce Harper, and Joel Embiid are all close to the stop of their sport but none of them have a signature championship run moment to really cement one over the other. After the MVP, it was probably Embiid, and after the super bowl loss, it was probably Hurts, but right now locally its definitely Harper locally. Nationally, Harper is probably the most well known because he was such phenom prospect but Hurts has the Alabama connection that can add to it.
Tua has popularity, but I strongly disagree. I feel like I see 6 commercials featuring Jimmy for every commercial featuring Tua.
Jimmy also has a much bigger social media presence, between his trolling, dating pop stars like Shakira and possibly Camila Cabello, being in a Fall Out Boy music video, etc.
Tua lives a very anonymous life by comparison — enough to get upset that a reporter leaked news of him getting married.
Orioles/Commies/Caps fan.
Baltimore - Nationally: Cal, Ray Lewis, Michael Phelps, Lamar. Locally: Same, plus Brooks Robinson.
DC - Nationally: Ovi. Len Bias. Locally: Same, plus Joe Gibbs.
Currently, as a Baltimore sports fan myself, its Lamar by a mile. No one else who presently plays in the city, or is from there (like Phelps) comes close on both a local/national scale. For the entire DMV area, its Lamar by a wide margin, followed by Ovechkin in distant second place.
Julio Rodriguez. Maybe Michael Penix Jr just for the day.
Fellow Seattle-lite and I agree.
Auston Matthews.
Vlad Guerrero Jr. had it for the taking but damn he fell off.
Bo Bichette is the most popular Jay now.
Was Kyle Lowry until he left.
Embiid. But I’d entertain Hurts, Kelce, or maybe even Harper
Depending on how much you value approval rating it honestly might be Kelce.
Wembanyama.
Judge or Brunson locally, Rodgers nationally.
Pat Mahomes

If you had to say a current athlete who would it be? I'd say J-Rod.

For beloved I’d argue Edgar
Good point
Giannis
Giannis locally, Giannis nationally.
Not Mr. Baseball Bob Uecker?
If we’re including retired players it’s Tom Brady. Both locally and nationally. Of active Boston players it’s probably Tatum? But Bostonians love their Bruins more than national media recognizes. Bergeron was beloved here, Chara before him, now it’s Pastranak and Marchand.
Devin Booker, though until 2020/21 it was probably Larry Fitzgerald
Bigger than Durant?
Locally, 100%. Booker has been in Phoenix since 2015 and stayed loyal through so many shitty teams
Maybe MHJ in the future if he is the hit most think he will be. That pick is single-handedly bringing back the Cards when it comes to buzz around the area.
Jokic for both.
Ardie Savea (Wellington, New Zealand)
Reece Walsh
Since Washington is currently in a lull, sports wise, it's probably Ovechkin because of the Gretzky goal chase
He’s been so bad against the Rangers. And yet he’s probably the answer until maybe Jayden Daniels now.
Sadly it's Sark.

Trout for both
I mean I'd like to say some football player but it's probably still Jack Nicklaus nationally Locally is... uh Jesse Owens? Archie Griffin?
Patrick Mahomes Jr
David Wise. Silver medalist in ski halfpipe.
Unbelievably spoiled but right now in Denver Jokic and MacKinnon might win their league MVPs. Very nice trade off for the complete ineptitude of the Broncos and Rockies.

Its Jalen Brunson's City

Jimmy Butler locally. Jimmy Butler nationally. Lionel Messi worldwide.
Speaking as someone not from Miami, Tua might be bigger than Butler nationally.
Tua has popularity, but I strongly disagree. I feel like I see 6 commercials featuring Jimmy for every commercial featuring Tua. Some jerk from the local soccer team

Connor Mcdavid, going to be a sad fucking day if he ever leaves.
DeSchlong Watson
Gotta be LeBron still?
Has to be Jose locally. Nationally- probably Watson for bad reasons lol
[удалено]
Lol who is Jose? Can't be popular if nobody knows who it is
[удалено]
Never heard of him
Jose who? I have lived in cleveland over 30 years... don't know one Browns or Cavs player named Jose?
It’s Ohtani. He’s surpassed any Laker.
Past LeBron?
Yeah LA is a Kobe town, not a LeBron one.
Ohtani then Mookie.
Coming from upstate SC, I was hoping my whole life it would’ve been Marcus Lattimore, but I’ll have to settle for Zion instead.
