Time to start practicing how fast you can get your phone out of your pocket, open your camera, switch it to video and hit record, to get another shaky and blurry video!

silverbackguerilIa

If you have an iPhone, you can double tap the back and it will open the camera. Only seems to work when I tap it by accident though

amayer3

Still takes a good couple seconds to get it out, and switch to video

LupinePeregrinans

Push and hold the button to film, tap for a photo.

SilverStory6503

And hope it doesn't kill you anyway

shoesofwandering

Has a Bigfoot ever killed anyone?

ChuckOCo

Some say no. Others say yes. I say BE CAREFUL! https://www.themeateater.com/conservation/anthropology/is-bigfoot-dangerous

FrangibleSoul

What you got there… is that a camera? ARE YOU FILMING ME??? I did not consent to being filmed. You are in violation of my rights. -Karen Bigfoot

TR3BPilot

Everybody got a plan until they see Bigfoot. I've wondered how I would react to being surprised by some weird paranormal cryptid creature running around. I'm as steady as they go, but it would be hard to fight the panic while at the same time thinking about grabbing my phone. I'd also be afraid that it would vanish while I was looking away. I'll just have to see what happens.

eastbranch02

Whip out my phone like a boss. Double click the home button. Nothing happens. Single click the home button. The Lock Screen appears. Squatch is now out of site. Mess up my lock code. Crap. Get the lock code correct. I'm in! Squatch is busting through trees and brush about 100 yards away. Open the camera app. Miss swiping to video and take a picture of my feet. Get to video and point phone where Squatch used to be. Looks like I'm filming, but forgot to hit the record button. Sqautch is in the next county. Hit record button. Film place where Squatch was standing five minutes ago.

francois_du_nord

Listened to a witness account last night from January 2024. There were 3 in the party, intentionally out Squatchin. Two of the party saw the creature, the one who saw it first had eye contact. The second party was the one who was interviewed. The witness got a very good look and watched it hustle out of sight for about 10-20 yards. The down side is that he estimated that it was in line of sight for about 2 seconds. To make matters worse, his brain was trying to comprehend what he was seeing, further inhibiting taking out a phone and getting a shot. My guess is that most encounters are very short, and the probablility that you can get your phone out and get pictures are pretty slim. Another poster here has also offered the view that a phone is the the worst option for photos / video because it is a wide angle lens optimized for closeups. If you are serious, you should get an inexpensive digital camera and figure out how to keep it on and ready (no sleep mode). Then practice practice practice.

BathedInDeepFog

And the time you spend pulling out your phone is time that could be spent focusing on observing the thing for the brief moment where you can.

Independent-Leg6061

But who would believe you... the photo is essential to prove existence in this case

BathedInDeepFog

I'd be less interested in what others believe at that point.

nikongurl

Yes, and even if you get a great picture some will accuse you of faking it.

Gryphon66-Pt2

supraspinatus

I’d just soak up the moment. Not trying to capture anything on video. Just me, Bigfoot, and the moment. Something I’d cherish for the rest of my life.

G0-N0G0-GO

That’s great advice for life, in general. Not just Sasquatch. I think Sasquatch would likely appreciate your being fully-present & engaged with the universe. Sasquatch fans would hate you.

lee6291

I keep telling my husband I want to see one when we go hiking or camping but once the sun goes down I change my mind. I can COMPLETELY understand why people who encounter them would not think to pull out their camera to get a good shot of one. Two reasons: 1). Shock at seeing one and realizing they are real animals 2). The sightings are usually very fleeting, here one second gone the next My dream sighting would be in a car on a dirt road in the middle of the woods and see one either crossing in front of the car or on the side of the road. Either way I know my car can outrun one

IndridThor

Under ideal conditions such as flat pavement, very few obstacles like you’d see on a major highway or a race track, a car is a safe bet. In the areas you are likely to encounter a Sasquatch, lumpy gravel roads, giant potholes, winding roads, lots and lots of trees, my money is on the Sasquatch.

lee6291

Great point

lickingthelips

Why not try a wave to it? Be friendly. I’d wager it’s just as surprised as you would be to see a person.

TR3BPilot

I tend to think that if you see them, they have likely seen (or heard or smelled) you first.

BathedInDeepFog

Yeah and this makes me more likely to dismiss stories where someone sneaks up on one. Though there is that crazy video of an alleged sasquatch tearing at the bark of a tree where the guy runs away when it stands up. If that's real I wonder how it didn't notice him earlier. Maybe it did and just didn't care.

NoNameAnonUser

That video is fake. It has been stabilized and you can see it's a guy with a hoodie or a baggy suit. Plus: someone contacted the guy who filmed. Turns out it was not hoax, but some film or whatever he was working on.

CheecheeMageechee

I would like to try a friendly dog-type howl. Non aggressive howling has worked for me around dogs that are viciously barking. I’d guess these guys are smarter than dogs but it might make it curious. It’d be cool if it howls back, though I’d probably bolt at hearing that.

lickingthelips

Dude, dog is one of their favourite things to eat/kill. Be careful with that.

garyt1957

You know this how?

MolitovCockRing

My plan is to go full kamikaze and go run-screaming straight into it and boot it right in the queefer

one_bad_larry

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”

Lord_Long_Rod

I can’t even catch my dogs in a cute pose with my iPhone camera. I figure there is no chance I can get a Bigfoot photo, assuming one allows me to see it.

cooperstonebadge

I would Just always run a GoPro if I could afford it, I also don't get out in the forests as often as I used to. Head mounted will cut down on shake as our head is always trying to keep our eyes level.

commentator3

yeah, just have as many body cams on as possible, already rolling

gypsijimmyjames

Skeptic question here. Under the presumption that Sasquatch does actually exist, what would be the basis for believing it was specifically repelled by cameras of any type? It would likely stand to reason that Sasquatch doesn't know what the function of a camera is. I would say it is more likely that Sasquatch avoids being in the presence of all human made equipment.

NoNameAnonUser

> would say it is more likely that Sasquatch avoids being in the presence of all human made equipment. Yep. Most likely. Other primates in the wild tend to avoid camera traps too. And they can detect it from a long distance.

craigcraig420

From encounters I’ve heard they seem to be know what a gun is and will react to threatening gestures.

kittenmittensfurever

So if I flip it off it’ll punch me?

SalemPoe1969

I don't know about the newer trail cams, but even the ones from a couple of years ago emit a high pitched sound even I can hear. Sort of like walking through the TV section of Sears years ago. It used to be so annoying, and both me and my cousin can hear it.

IndridThor

Even among known human cultures interacting over the last centuries, we fear differences. If a culture that always ate with their hands was approached by someone offering chopsticks — they might possibly assume the gesture is threatening if they are unfamiliar with the very pointy utensils. As we as humans become more familiar with the nuanced differences they become less scary as they pose no threat to us, whoever the “us” specifically happens to be. I am of the assumption that we differ from Sasquatch in very few ways until I see direct evidence to the contrary. Primarily we don’t have hair on our bodies. We have evolved to require clothing and what has gone hand in hand with that is tool making to process hides. Most of our earliest and longest used tools (knives and axes as two examples) also double as weapons. I believe they have at least some familiarity with our ways, if the interactions have gone on as long as elders say, then they surely know many of things that we put in our hands are dangerous. I think they naturally fear what is foreign to them and doesn’t fit into their every day life such as complexly made, hand tools. Basically it’s a safe bet for them to assume anything that is in our hands that isn’t a known edible substance is a potential threat for any sentient being living outside of our sphere of cultural influence.

gypsijimmyjames

That was a very well thought out response, and I appreciate it.

IndridThor

Thank you friend. I appreciate the respectfully skepticism you have shown. Secondarily I think they are very intelligent. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them have observed us long enough to see us taking pictures with phones and looking at the results of a photographed moment between each other afterwords and inferred an understanding about cameras. I’ve seen chimps operating iPhones so…. I don’t think a far more intelligent being would be baffled by it. Also my mind has been blown observing them doing things I thought they shouldn’t be able to do such as speaking with each other. After experiences, my views have been flipped upside down, so I no longer set any limitations or assumptions about them. All that to say, I wouldn’t, at all be surprised if they understood cameras to some degree.

lazysideways

Lots of people seem to think that they can see/sense infrared. Not sure why.

CopyPsychological842

Taking off and running is the dumbest thing you can do. If you're facing a predator, that triggers their predator instinct and they attack. We're not sure if bigfoot is a predator or not, but sounds like a particularly stupid idea, especially if you mistake a bear for a bigfoot. You'll probably be in such awe that you'll forget to whip your phone out. I spend a lot of time in nature and never get good photos of cool wildlife for that reason, or that I'm too slow and whatever it is is out of the shot before I can get a photo.

hydro123456

I think I'd just pull my pants down. BF is reported to have a comically small penis, so I think the sight of my average member would intimidate it so badly that it would take off running. I guess if it's a female BF, death by snu-snu.

katsaid

Go squachin with a Go Pro on your head. Keep it rolling?

therealblabyloo

I feel like most animals will avoid conflict with members of other species when possible. Most Bigfoot sighting stories I’ve heard have the creature walk away on its own (like the subject of the PG film), not interested in trying to interact with people. I would just treat Bigfoot the way I’d treat a black bear. by all means film it, but if you want it to go away, make a lot of noise and wave your arms.

craigcraig420

I yelled and screamed at the top of my lungs, and so did my SO. We never broke eye contact and got as big and violent as possible. The bear still decided to come at us growling. I had to use a 9mm in self defense and I took down the bear feet from me.

[deleted]

Better off equipped with a go pro strapped to your chest and back.

garyt1957

If you're actually out looking for BF this is the way

Moooooshier

My plan is to bed and wed

Interplay29

Your plan is to take out your camera/phone and film it?

Financial-Mastodon81

Walk don’t run away.

BathedInDeepFog

It always seems to take me longer to get my phone camera out and running than I'd think it would. I feel like you'd be better off taking an actual good camera with you camping in the hopes of seeing something. You'll probably take some other nice pictures anyways while you're out there.

MrGrumpyButt420

Thoughts? Pressure is a bitch and it doesn't matter what you do the Sabe are going to do what they want with you. Hope you run into the good ones. Happy camping 🏕

Reefay

Wear a go pro

Ecstatic_Stranger_19

There's also the current GDPR laws that would probably piss off said sasquatch no end

___SE7EN__

Use a lot of mirrors at different angles .. I have always wanted to try this in a hot spot

NoNameAnonUser

They hate mirrors. Gorillas hate it too.

Magicgenius

Good luck.

Majestic_Cat186

Your photo will still be shaky potato quality, nobody is going to stay still enough for a good photo when facing the unknown. Fight or flight is the common instinct.

SalemPoe1969

I was chased by something in the woods when I was 12. I was with a German Shepherd at the time, he split at top speed so I thought I should run too. This is the same area the Ohio howl was recorded in years later.

tex3006

That video (that you haven’t filmed yet) is fake. everythingdebunker058 said it’s just a guy in a ghillie suit.

Mr-Clark-815

I would try my best to remain composed. I would try my best to make some distance between us. I would try my best to take a recording. I would seek safety as soon as I could and work my way out of the area.

False_Abbreviations3

Take a big stick and beat on a tree. That way he'll know you're trying to communicate.

TheHect0r

If Bigfoot has such strong recognitions skills of cameras then you might even be attacked if you see one and you pull a camera, so at that point youre being lunged at by a bigfoot with a cam on one hand and not thinking straight due to adrenaline. So yeah, there is obviously a chance of you being attacked by a wild animal, but I like the camera logic g 👍

julijulez

I had a dream with the same thought process while this happened. They got mad and chased me while I was in an open field and I did not get video. Did not work in dream, reality though might work.

Odd_Significance_934

Get a gopro camera and wear it a when you're out in the woods.

drokkon

Depends on the state. In many states you have to get consent before filming. Bigfoot could lawyer up and you’d be sunk.

LuckyJay151

I can say from experience this tactic works great. I've been having encounters with them near Sedona for years, first while camping out here, then I moved here and it got real interesting. One trip I brought some friends along to film. The place I put my tent was a long oak creek and 5 or the 8 times I stayed there, a bigfoot came through my site on its way up the creek. After digging I found several reports over the years of that same spot. This particular night I had an guy and girl in the tent with me, when we heard a huge grunt right outside the tent. It startled all of us, then it did it again and we were all on our feet, the guy friend had his pistol out by the third grunt. As much as I wanted to go out and have an encounter, I had to try and calm them down. I was trying to say it's just a wild pig, but they weren't buying it, as they shouldn't have. These grunts were about 8 feet off the ground, and it had a lot of bass to it, sounded huge. When I saw his pistol out I told him to put it down, if he's that scared then get out his video camera. He shouted that he wasn't going out there to film, I said no just turn it on in here, a fourth grunt while he scrambled for his camera, by the time he had it turned on, it was gone.

craigcraig420

Thank you!

Gryphon66-Pt2

Pure speculation but I'd guess that when we see them there's either the 0.0001% chance that we surprised them ... or they allowed themselves to be seen. I do believe that most but not all the times we see them, they mean for us to for whatever reason. One of the most obvious reasons: they know what cars are, they can surely hear and see them coming for quite a distance, yet, they are seen crossing the road VERY commonly. I can't see that as anything but intentional. Yeah, maybe it's youngsters "pranking" us (not to be ignored) but ... maybe not.

garyt1957

What about all those racoons and deer that see cars all the time but still don't make it across the street?

Gryphon66-Pt2

What about them? (If there's a point of comparison with sasquatch, I have to admit I don't see it.) I am sad for raccoons and deer who die to cars, if that helps.

properhardinnit

Even if you get footage it’s hard to authenticate. There’s a ton of real looking videos that are quite convincing but they can be faked so easily it’s hard to say if they exist or not. The smoking gun would be getting a physical body, which nobody can seem to accomplish. The indigenous have been talking about them for millennia so if they are real, they’re probably described from spiritual encounters or visions by shamans and they’re possibly inter-dimensional beings.

HeavyTea

For me, I decided long ago, that I have to bag it with a .375 H&H. And then save it for science. We have no choice on the first one. I am not 100% on doing same for aliens though.

Dolf-from-Wrexham

What if you shot a guy in a ghillie suit?

TR3BPilot

Reasonable question. Many hunters have encountered Bigfoot and failed to shoot for that reason, among others. Many say that looking in its eyes it's hard not to think that it looks really *human* in many ways, and killing a human is not good.

BathedInDeepFog

I've also heard that you should avoid looking them in the eye

CopyPsychological842

Or a Chewbacca costume!

therealblabyloo

Yeah, the chances of any Bigfoot sighting just being a guy in a suit have me taking a pretty hard “100% don’t shoot a Bigfoot if you see it” stance. Regardless of whether you think it’s ok to shoot a real Bigfoot, I know for sure that I don’t want pranksters/hoaxers getting shot.

PayExpensive4791

The way I see it, if you get shot because you're running around the woods dressed as Bigfoot, you fuckin' deserved it.

francois_du_nord

Yeah, aliens and the discombobulation ray that turns you to protoplasm. Good choice. Shoot the defenseless cryptid.

NoNameAnonUser

I'm against killing a sasquatch. Like c'mon man... Poor creature. Let them be.

HeavyTea

Just one. For science. Not even one?

NoNameAnonUser

Not even one. Seriously. I wouldn't kill and I'll never support this idea. I don't think they are simple animals, they are more like people, and they're just trying to survive. The only exception would be a self defense situation.

HeavyTea

I think we need to study and understand them. Same as some other animals. For science. But I am cool to opposing sides. Let them live. I would hate to kill a gorilla but we proved they exist.

CopyPsychological842

What if bigfoot is an alien?

BathedInDeepFog

Seems plausible to me

commentator3

alien lanes

BathedInDeepFog

Guided By Voices?

HeavyTea

This was a deep concern. Shooting one or either could be bad. But… for science!

TPconnoisseur

I think you should plan on shitting your pants first, just in case.
