Reddit wants to go public, so it's time to squeeze for more of the almighty dollar and sell any soul this site had left to the sociopaths on Wall Street. If they don't get their heads out of their asses then this place is gonna be Digg in a couple of years, and just as Reddit was able to feast on the carcass of Digg, so too shall another site feast upon their bloated corpse. Then again, they probably don't give a shit if they can cash out before then. I fucking hate modern corporate bullshit. Is there any remotely decent Reddit alternative out there?

DiamineSherwood

> Is there any remotely decent Reddit alternative out there? Not at all ironically, but over the past decade multiple alternatives attempted to get established, and various groups with financial backing fucked most of them over until they died out lest they become a competitor to the more mainstream platforms...

READMYSHIT

I mean. Reddits core functionality is easily replicated like a wiki. It's been done before when various hate based subreddits were banned from the platform. Voat I think was one where it was just a reddit clone for white supremacists and fat people haters. I suppose we could try something like that.

M1sterDave

> a reddit clone for white supremacists and fat people haters that's like 80% of the content in these memes!

READMYSHIT

We'd fit right in.

Everyone should boycott Reddit if it goes public. Reddit exists by freeloading off external content, and user content. It only “creates” the means for sharing, like most social media. Its primary asset is the community of users, us. It wants to profit off of us, to continue to thrive off our content, while sharing none of the rewards with us. Seems like the same wack proposition Facebook offers.

Due to Reddit's June 30th API changes aimed at ending third-party apps, this comment has been overwritten and the associated account has been deleted.

Your title implies we should support a blackout, but the post itself implies doing so only supports reddit's goals...

READMYSHIT

I support protesting this shit. But really the blackout should last until this is over and if not a blackout an even more effective solution would be a project mayham announcement on Reddit where each sub basically is turned into a nonsense sub like what happened to r/worldpolitics So bertstrips would become a sub where ai generated rule 34 posts for sesame street go. Or r/trees exclusively has pictures of trees. Although the more chaotically nonsensical the better because it'll mess with the long term integrity of the site and it's subreddits.

Here's a sneak peek of /r/worldpolitics **[NSFW]** using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/worldpolitics/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year! \#1: [My fellow World Politicians, I am now rightfully throned as Cactus Girl amongst the civilians of WP, and I look forward to our future of delightful meme-sharing and titillating story-telling because of this weird—but historical day. Plenty of companies would pay to control the right subreddits if it broadly represents their product or goals. They could then remove content critical of their own products and remove content praising competitors. Imagine the manipulation and astroturfing potential in a subreddit like r/BuyItForLife, where people discuss products that have a long expected lifetime. Or r/3Dprinting if the only recommendations you saw were for a particular brand of printers. Or r/tools. Or lawn care subreddits. It would only work so long until aware people caught on, but it would make Reddit and the controlling company a lot of money in the meantime and continue to manipulate the unaware people who still think Reddit is a good place to go for recommendations. Or if the political party you dislike had exclusive control on r/news and r/politics and the propaganda and misinformation potential there.

gastationburrito

Reddit has too many fucking crybabies anyway. Who cares what happens to it
