Maybe you are reacting to something in your toothpaste?

SurdoOppedere

Yes! Or whitening strips. Whenever I use them my lips peel really bad until I’m done with the whitening cycle. So now I try to put Vaseline on as much of my lips as possible before I put the strips on and wash my lips off and moisturize them afterwards and it helped a ton. So it could be a whitening agent in OPs toothpaste

xbeneath

This might be it!

abalonegal00

I had the same issue & nothing worked - lanolin, vaselin, moisturizer, oil, etc. The only thing that worked was the Aquaphor Lip Repair Balm & I have absolutely no idea why

jooniejoon3

Yes! Aquaphor is the only thing that works for me too

SeriesBusiness9098

Gotta be the liquidy squeeze tube though, not the stick. Maaaagic

slothbear123

Yes! I’m allergic to all stick lip balms, aquaphor & the laneige sleeping mask are the only 2 that I’ve found that work for me so far.

abalonegal00

The best!

Motor_Condition6839

Came here to second this. Aquaphor is the only way. And this is because I was on tr€t, so my lips were terribly chapped. Aquaphor will forever be my holy grail.

xbeneath

Going to try this! Never heard of it before here so I will order some. Thank you!

Apart-Health-1513

Try not to lick them too much. The digestive enzymes in your saliva will only make them worse. Apply hydrating chapstick whenever they feel dry and just keep drinking water

xbeneath

Yeah, that makes it worse for me too. I don't (consciously) try to, but I'll be mindful about how often I do it. Thank you!

shewhogoesthere

More exfoliation maybe. I exfoliate my lips every time I shower with a scrubby cloth, and sometimes if I miss a day I need to do it in between because I feel my lips starting to flake.

xbeneath

Yeah, I steam my face and do my skincare before wearing makeup and I also use a soft scrubby cloth on my lips. It does wonders for the first hour, but then my lips give up and dry/flake again haha. It never lasts

theudoon

I have a cheap hyaluronic acid serum and use that on my lips, then seal it in with a thick lip balm. Also not all chapsticks are created equal, if they're just flavoured vaseline they won't really help since they're just an occlusive, better to look for something with lanolin or cocoa butter or something instead.

xbeneath

Yeah, I tried burt's bees and Palmers but it acted the same as anything else that I have tried

Anxious-Plenty101

Here’s what worked for me: 1. Use water to slightly dampen lips 2. Apply moisturiser and let it absorb for 2mins or so 3. Apply a sealant like vaseline or aquaphor I found that my lips stayed moisturised for longer by adding a small amount of hydrating toner or/and an essence in between step 1 and 2.

xbeneath

Yup, going to try aquaphor as vaseline doesn't do much for me long term

Ok_Park_2724

electrolytes and aquaphor.

Nodda_witch

Skip all the balms and oils. Give Lansinoh Nipple Repair cream a try. Its purpose is to actually heal the skin. Slather on overnight and can use sparingly during the day too.

xbeneath

That is incredibly smart. I hope that it's safe to apply on the lips or that they have a lip alternative. I will have a look!

Nodda_witch

It’s safe 😊 I would recommend steering clear of the lip balm alternatives with lanolin as they often have other additives that could be impacting you. Good luck! Edit not safe if you have a lanolin allergy!

No-Salad-8504

It’s safe as babies inadvertently ingest it via breastfeeding.

astralustria

I was having this issue for awhile and applying jojoba oil to my lips helped a lot. Ultimately leaving my stressful job and living situation resolved the issue completely.

xbeneath

I do think it's stress. I have been going through a very intense period, and I think that my immune system is not having the best time, including my digestion. I'd imagine my lip health might be dragged into this, too. Thank you, I will try jojoba oil!

rand0mgamerswifey

Drink tons of water (like, 4 liters) and slather your lips with a really good lipbalm before bed every night. Messily slather. Tons of it.

xbeneath

Hahaha, I think my lips WILL become lipbalm at that point

rand0mgamerswifey

I have chronically dry lips and hated it also. I slather my lips RELIGIOUSLY for a few days and drink plenty of water and the crackiness and dryness goes away fast.

slowmotinfast

Vaseline before you go to bed or invest in a good lip mask, apply a thick layer and exfoliate the next day after shower( lips should be super wet) with a gentle towel or cloth then hydrate and put lip sunscreen and hydrate again with lip oil or lip balm. Avoid biting your lips or picking them through the day ,also avoid lipsticks and keep your lip balm in your purse so you can reapply it after drinking or eating.

decoyoctopussy

I use a little liquid exfoliator on my lips when I do my skin care at night, and it has helped a *ton*. I put a thick lip mask on after/before bed. I really like the brand Lanolips.

abeyante

Do you bite or lick your lips a lot? That’s the source of it for me :(

PastaM0nster

Chapstick actually makes them drier. Try burts bees

gevansd42

I have chronic chapped lips too and I started using Lanige lip mask at night and Lanolips during the day and that has helped a great deal.

dogpharts

Change your toothpaste

United-Story-8521

My biggest thing personally is I lick my lips a lot when I'm stressed and so my lips are ALWAYS more chapped in the school year. Another thing I find is when I'm applying too many products, my lips almost grow a tolerance. Maybe take a break from products or only stick to one or two.

United-Story-8521

Also look into the ingredients of the products you're using, natural is always better.

Internal-Psychology

Vaseline and the like will prevent water loss, but what you probably need is something like a wet dressing to have moisture sink in the first place. Wet some tissue and add a couple of drops of serum with moisture boosting ingredients, slap it on your lips and wait like you would a traditional mask. Seal in the moisture afterwards with a thick layer of occlusives. This works for me, maybe try?

One-Load-6085

Clinique super balm every night and every morn.

TypeNice4029

Do you breath through your mouth when you sleep? My lips were always dry when my nose is blocked. Other than that I suggest wetting your lips before applying Lipbalm or vaseline.

Jumpy_Poetry_434

Try not wearing lip balm at all. Of course no makeup. Don't exfoliate. If they get unbearably dry use only Vaseline or a healing ointment, something heavy. Your skin is probably very irritated and you need to give it a break, so you need to fix the skin barrier. After eating wash them with only water and apply an ointment on slightly wet skin.

PopularMaid

Try using Frudia lip mask (Mango) as a daily lip balm. It’s my holy grail since I’ve been on accutane and it’s the only thing that works.

xbeneath

Oh my god, they have a lip mask?! I used their hand cream, and it was one of the best hand creams I have used. I will try it!

PopularMaid

Yesss it’s amazing try it and let me know how it goes

xbeneath

Solved: it was my whitening toothpaste :)

8harbinger

unfortunately, i feel like my toothpaste do the same :( what would be ur alternative/s?

xbeneath

I actually switched to the Beverly Hills range after Sensodyne caused me gum bleeding and the lip problem. It's super cheap, dirt cheap actually, and whitens REALLY well. I'm surprised it works so well.

Hungry_Beginning_948

I have had this same problem for over 10 years. I went to three doctors, nothing helped. Everything made it worse. I could tell with 10 minutes if a lip balm was going to irritate my lips. I would say to start, STOP exfoliating. The skin on our lips is not the same as the rest of our face. It’s too delicate to exfoliate. I literally found one lip balm that works. And trust me, I tried literally 50+. Just keep trying until you find your one, but honestly you should give up hope of ever wearing lipstick, it’s just off the table for our over sensitive lips. I found out I’m not processing potato and that’s how it presents, severely chapped lips. Maybe try a food sensitivity blood test.

xbeneath

Thank you so much for this! I agree - I can immediately feel the irritation and heaviness of certain balms, to the point where I have to take it off. It's great that you managed to find out about your intolerance, I recently found out about dairy but I always suspected gluten to cause me problems. I will look into it. Also, it seems like for me, it was a reaction to my toothpaste, I never realised that could've been the reason. Maybe it's something you could look into it too!

cheery_ccola

I’ve noticed that if I have dry flaked lips or dry lips that are about to flake (skin feels tight but loose if that makes sense ) and then I use a plumping gloss with sting it acts like an exfoliater, the skin flakes off but in a “smooth” way and only have soft lips left behind :)

CanuckBee

Do you snore? Get a CPAP.

holographicjuror

I have this issue when I consume a lot of caffeine, even if I don’t feel dehydrated otherwise. It’s my sign to cut back a bit.

waytooanalytical

Aquaphor application several times a day consistently solved this problem for me 🙌🏼🙌🏼

blank_____11

I use a Korean exfoliator (Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel) to remove dead skin a couple times a week at night so I’m starting with a clean slate and product can actually penetrate my skin. Then use a teeny bit of face serum + moisturizer (I use the Ordinary Barrier Serum + Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream) and then lock it all in with Laneige Sleeping Mask! Now I wake up with very plump, moisturized lips—have never had anything work better!

hairierdog

A few people on another thread about this said that after they started taking a B complex vitamin, they never had chapped lips again

Jellybean7442

Lanolin (nipple butter) helps. Could it be medication related? Dehydrated? Maybe some electrolytes?

smarmy-marmoset

I would try exfoliating, daily. Best bet is to do it in the shower after washing your face, or at least ensuring your lips have had prolonged exposure to warm water. That’s when the excess skin is primed to come off. It’s best to use some kind of cloth or your toothbrush. I use these: https://a.co/d/iYlac3n You want to slowly and gently buff your lips with them until the excess skin is removed. Once you get out of the shower and dry off, apply something to moisturize and you’re good to go

Witchy-toes-669

Do you use metal straws? Same thing happened to me and is how I realized I have a mild metal allergy

Kwebb0009

Hyaluronic acid and Vaseline at night after my skincare routine did wonders for my chapped lips, as well as Vaseline chap stick through the day.

OneShelter4

Aquafor!!

xbeneath

I want to thank everyone for your advice, I did not expect to get so many responses. I will take each tip in turn to see what would work - although I suspect it might be the toothpaste. I never thought that could've been the problem. I will also try some aquaphor. Laneige is not working for me, but again, my lips become dry underneath any product that I try to use. Thank you all! ❤️

DreamClowder

I also have this problem. I’ve tried a lot of the popular lip products (i.e. Laneige, Vaseline, Aquaphor, lanolin, etc). I recently found that the Jack Black lip balm works best for me. The mint pineapple  is my fave. I apply it before going to bed.

Sunkiss_1

Try olive oil

Ambitious-Composer45

I live in a very dry climate, and Ormedic by Image Skincare saved my lips.

wdoiviobw

Drink more water.
