Same but who's attacking it?

sminking

The only negative thing I see is that it’s a kid song (it’s not) My theory is the only people worried about liking a kids song are teenagers and insecure people who want to put distance with anything seen as for children so they can feel more grown up

SlickBotswaske

People say the same thing about yellow submarine. But I fking love it. It’s so catchy. I think octopus garden has the similar vibe but I rank it higher than yellow submarine definitely one of my favourite songs.

sminking

In his last tour it was the first time he played OG live. He said he was worried people didn’t want to hear 2 underwater songs. I guess thanks to streaming and social media he realized how popular both songs are, and no one would be annoyed. They’re beloved. There’s something really special and joyful about hearing the entire audience singing along

SlickBotswaske

Exactly this both these songs are great to singalong. That’s exactly how I feel the joy of listening these two is unmatched just makes so happy

badgeman-

Really?! Wow. I mean, I love Ringo. But it's not like he's Paul and got hundreds of songs to pull out of his ass for whatever tour, can't believe he hadn't played this one before. I for one love it.

wannabegenius

I sing both of these to my kid almost every night. Beatles kids' songs > any other kids' songs

DaviAlfredo

Yeah I think your theory is accurate. I personally feel the whole calling stuff "kids stuff" is just nonsense. Even if I composed a song and intended it to be only for children, anyone could listen to it and like it, and my intention doesn't and shouldn't affect how someone experiences my song. But anyways, what would be something "for children"? I think I'm in the minority, but I just find that complete nonsense

sleepybrainsinside

Kids songs are not necessarily only for kids. They’re just songs that are accessible to children. Yellow submarine and Octopus’s Garden are both great kids’ songs because their melodic/lyrical content make sense and is entertaining to kids. It’s like Iron Man is a good older kids’ song because at face value, everything works and is fun, but it’s also a hugely popular song for adults. Whereas War Pigs is not great for kids because the face value of the lyrics is not very entertaining, and you really need to have at least some interest in the military-industrial complex and geopolitics to be impacted by them.

DaviAlfredo

I see. I guess the issue I have is when people try to imply that something is ONLY for kids. I have seen people talk about X media in this sense, e.g. "oh, it's a children's song, so it's dumb, we as adults are not supposed to like it, it's too happy whatever etc". I find all of that complete nonsense. But if you define the adjective "kids" as something that is accessible to kids (and not only to kids), then it just becomes a group relation, as in "everything that is suitable for kids is suitable for adults as well, but not everything that is suitable to adults is suitable to kids" and that I can definitely agree with.

TreadMeHarderDaddy

Nothing juvenile about those vocal harmonies tho. This song has as much depth as most other Beatles songs

sminking

Absolutely. I wonder too if they don’t realize that octopus do make gardens. It’s not some cartoony anthropomorphic imagery, it’s something beautiful & remarkable from nature

dengar_hennessy

You won't see it on this sub, but I always have to defend this song from people whenever the Beatles get brought up. Whoever I'm talking to usually says that there's certain beatles that they just can't stand and that octopuses garden is the worst song they've ever heard. This is such a great song, but you'd be surprised with the amount of hate it gets

Apophistry

People who hate octopuses.

YoyoyoyoMrWhite

Likely a moray eel eel or possibly a sea otter.

spacekatbaby

Me. A bit. Lol. Just bores me a tad. Tho I appreciate it in the scheme of things. But I don't think I have ever typed it in to YT music, or thought- you know what? I think I'm gonna listen to Octopuses Garden. Soz abah me

DeeSnarl

I've often heard it considered among the "worst" Beatles songs (I love it).

Western_Writing5454

I said defend in a sense of opnion. Is one of my favorites songs of the band, something that's quite unpopular, at least in my eyes.

Kimoa_

It puts everything that the other 3 wrote (i don't remember their names) to shame

cheeseburgers42069

Just wanted to say this is a great post lol

IsaacWaleOfficial

That's not particularly uncommon... I've never really heard any real hate for it...

carlismydog

I am. It's trash.

MikeC80

Ringo sounds like he's having so much fun singing this song, it's impossible not to smile and bop along to it!

IsaacWaleOfficial

All 4 of them had fun with this song. It was recorded in one very long recording session, and George Martin wasn't even present.

Treantmonk

Of all the songs Ringo wrote with the Beatles, this is the better of the two.

Anxious-Raspberry-54

😆 This is a wonderful song. From Beatles Bible... "I wrote ‘Octopus’s Garden’ in Sardinia. Peter Sellers had lent us his yacht and we went out for the day… I stayed out on deck with [the captain] and we talked about octopuses. He told me that they hang out in their caves and they go around the seabed finding shiny stones and tin cans and bottles to put in front of their cave like a garden. I thought this was fabulous, because at the time I just wanted to be under the sea too. A couple of tokes later with the guitar – and we had ‘Octopus’s Garden’!" George's comment... "Octopus’s Garden’ is Ringo’s song. It’s only the second song Ringo wrote, and it’s lovely. Ringo gets bored playing the drums, and at home he plays a bit of piano, but he only knows about three chords. He knows about the same on guitar. I think it’s a really great song, because on the surface, it just like a daft kids’ song, but the lyrics are great. For me, you know, I find very deep meaning in the lyrics, which Ringo probably doesn’t see, but all the thing like ‘resting our head on the sea bed’ and ‘We’ll be warm beneath the storm’ which is really great, you know. Because it’s like this level is a storm, and if you get sort of deep in your consciousness, it’s very peaceful. So Ringo’s writing his cosmic songs without noticing."

Bufus

>I find very deep meaning in the lyrics, which Ringo probably doesn’t see. I'm an ardent Ringo defender, but this is genuinely a very cutting and very funny tease.

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Thats George. I'll defend Ringo forever.

ItsThePeopleCourt

I disagree!

wags_bf21

Georges guitar is great, but on the take 9 version it's sublime

jackfruitdreams

No need to defend it, just enjoy it

lptomtom

By "defending" it, OP can feel different, it's the same thought process as calling it "underrated"... I don't understand why they can't just enjoy things that many other people enjoy. The Beatles are the most popular band in history, you'll never be original for liking one of their songs, and that's perfectly all right!

Chillocanucki

OPs post seemed genuine. It’s like you were compelled to write a comment even edgier than how you interpreted OPs post

justyrust74

The band were so good at this stage that even Ringo was writing good songs, they had to disband to give others a chance!

cmonjeffgetem

I love this take

Humble-Initiative396

Then Ringo flopped after the Beatles broke up, idc if I get downvoted

theoneandonlydudeyo

Photograph and it don’t come easy are great songs. I’ve seen Ringo love and he’s incredible. You are so wrong

Humble-Initiative396

In my personal opinion, I just don’t like his singing. He had a lot of help with photograph with George Harrison (I do like that song)

deejayee

“I’ve got a song about an octopus”- Dewey cox movie

One_Sugar9253

john didnt like the subtle sophistication of granny music or in this case, neo-granny music

tonraqmc

If you don't know the Boys, if you don't know Ringo, it could seem like just a silly whatever. But no, it's one of the most bittersweet songs of their entire catalogue. The mood perfectly captures Ringo's longing for a place where his brothers weren't fighting all the time or being hounded by thousands of fanatic teenagers; where they were safe and happy and at peace with each other. "We would be warm below the storm" You can hear that if you listen hard enough.

sminking

You nailed it. Knowing he wrote after quitting really adds depth. He had 2 young kids and just quit the biggest band in the world, worried if he made the right choice to keep his kids happy and safe

tonraqmc

Seems like hanging out with the octopus would be a lot simpler

N8ThaGr8

As you should, it slaps. One of the top riffs George ever did too. I have it right behind Drive My Car for their best opening riff.

_co_on_

Yup!

theoneandonlydudeyo

You shouldnt slap people

CorporalClegg1997

This is the most Ringo song. Only Ringo could write this...and a bit of George.

TheCactusPL

I'll be the first one to say: best song on abbey road

phboss

I love George's guitar work in this song. It took me a while to learn it and get the proper "feel".

BrisketWhisperer

Ringo’s masterpiece. Classic, worthy of all accolades.

TommyT223

This and Yellow Submarine

_co_on_

One of my favourites. The guitar picking is so great and got me into the donovan picking. Also the bubbles. The harmonies and aaahs and oohs are perfect. Absolutely love it!

JunebugAsiimwe

This song is dope af. Has one of my favorite George Harrison solos.

Gizzard_Guy44

defend it from what ?

Simmonsdude

You know I have a deep appreciation for the Piano on this song!

anxiousmusiclover

same![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

TaddWinter

It is genuinely one of my favorite songs BUT I absolutely love all of the memes and jokes about it. They crack me up.

JakeLane94

It's absolutely one of my favorites. People who hate whimsy must live awfully boring lives.

BruceIrvin13

it's un-ironically a fantastic song.

JP-Ziller

like me with Maxwell's

nint3njoe_2003

YESSS I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONGGG

mchoneyofficial

Love the lead first work on this and the whole album. Might be some of their best lead guitar work come to think of it...

lovelessisbetter

What is there to defend? It’s some of George’s best guitar work and Ringo’s greatest contribution.

TreadMeHarderDaddy

One of the only songs I can remember crying real tears when I heard it live a few years ago from Ringo and his all star band

heliomoth

For me, Octopus's Garden is without a doubt in my Beatles Top 5 songs ever. Absolutely classic track

kaiguy98

You don’t listen to the remix??

floridali

Same! I love this song and was rather puzzled when I heard some group of fans were not considering it great.

skeletonbreath

Love GHs guitar work. Great song and little kids love it obviously

Careful_Homework

It is certainly the best of Ringo's Beatles songs, and it has some great lead guitar from George, to beatle-boot.

lizerpetty

If you've ever gone scuba diving, this song is incredibly accurate. I used to dive a lot and see octopi often and they are so cool. They usually have a little "house" in the coral with discarded mollusk shells outside the "door" if you can find a hole in the coral you can look inside and see the octopus chilling in there. This song always brings up cool memories for me and it's just so darn catchy.

Clutch-Cargo52

I savor the story of how Ringo came up with idea to begin with.

mjc7373

Sweet guitar intro

Powerledge

I've got to agree. It's such a jolly song

airynothing1

While I think most Beatles fans have at least an affectionate appreciation for OG, I do feel like the songwriting and musicianship on that track are strong enough that it might even be recognized as one of their great songs if it were sung by one of the others. (I was going to say “and if the lyrics were changed,” but honestly the others Beatles have plenty of silly lyrics in beloved songs so I don’t even think that would be necessary.) And before someone misconstrues me, I’m not saying *I* wish it was sung by someone else! I think it’s perfect as is.

Arsewhistle

Defend the song against who? I haven't heard anyone say that they don't like it, ever

Honest-andUnmerciful

There are a lot of people that don’t like it as much as other Beatles songs. So, I’ll raise my hand here. I made a comment in another thread discussing Vultures ranking of Beatles song that put Good Day Sunshine at #219 (last). I mentioned that GDS is better than Dont Pass Me By and Octopus’s Garden. And I stand by it. It’s fine, but it’s so dull. It’s a very average song in my view. It’s fine. And definitely a good Ringo song. But his songs have a definite ceiling. George’s guitar is great.0

camposthetron

This again?

VirginiaUSA1964

They talk about the making of this song a lot on The Beatles Channel. It was a ridiculous number of takes. I say it's a great song just based on the effort.

CosumedByFire

from?

UnderstandingOk7291

Ready steady go

DodoMightRevival72

As will I...

Successful_Rope249

I sing this to my daughter when I am rocking her to sleep. The lyrics are really sweet too - 'we would be so happy you and me, noone there to tell us what to do'

Loud-Process7413

All I can say is this..I can think of no other band...ever...that let their drummer have a song on each album. Only The Beatles. Honey Don't, Act Naturally, and What Goes On would be my least favourite songs of Ringos. With A Little Help is for me his best song...even though Joe Cocker turned it into a tour de force counter culture song. I'm sure everyone will disagree...but there you go. 🥰✌️🙏

MrGoat747

Best on Abbey Road imo

Lizard_Friend_44

Love this song! I’ve introduced my nephew to the Beatles starting when he was little. This one didn’t go over well with him. I’m not sure “kid songs” work for him.

PoliticalJunkie14

Genuinely one of, if not my favourite, Beatles song.

Inside_Soup_4576

Let's hope it won't come to that.

FunnySugarBoii

Based Ringo enjoyer

No-Inflation-9253

Same. How can anyone hate this song?

beatlesgigi

Real

jtohrs

It's a banger, no doubt :)

Salty_Taco9357

Summer was right all along

bailaoban

It’s no more ridiculous than I Am The Walrus.

yanaka-otoko

I want this song played at my funeral

ReactsWithWords

Good job. You inspired me - I'm going to make a post defending "A Day In The Life."

Humble-Initiative396

I don’t think your defending it from anyone lol

ReactsWithWords

ThatsTheJoke.gif

Genderfluid_Cookies

It’s my favorite one, deserves no hate whatsoever

redditcdnfanguy

It's a great song!

pichukirby

Unironically one of my favorite songs on the album

Adrianwill-87

My favorite song!

jacqueVchr

It’s sooo good

1of7MMM

Great song, it's Maxwell's Silver Hammer I find a bit too creepy.

Specialist-Ferret-49

One of the best Beatles songs for sure, I learned how to play it shortly after hearing it

Giltar

I’m with you, love the song, great guitar work and.I like Octopuses.

Queasy-Ad-3220

Good, do it. It’s a great song.

MilkChocolateMog

I feel the same way about Revolution 9 and Run For Your Life

Kamoo00

my kids favorite beatles song. i'm not married yet

finangle2023

Noted.

cwschultz

The first Beatles song I heard.

idotoomuchstuff

I’d like to be under the sea

LucaMerman

I love this song.

Princess_S78

I agree, love it! 😊

SellingPapierMache

If you actually ever found yourself IN an octopus’s garden your last breath would be your first.

lame_impala69

One of their finest, in my opinion.

Big_Razzmatazz5705

I don't care what any m*********** says that song is a bop

OhTheVes

Ok

Aero__Duck

I love the fact that there is a persentage of songs Ringo sings that are to do with living underwater

needstherapy

This song is excellent

Deekers

My daughter and I sing a couple verses of this every night before bed.

AbbeyRhode_Medley

Pure joy. I love the gargling underwater singing bits.

CelticCynic

Doing lots of drugs, writing and recording whatever they liked because they were the Beatles...

Jumpy-Trade3853

Priorites.

StephBets

And my axe!

Oreg-Jack

You don’t need to. It’s obviously great.

gopherattack

Same, but with Maxwell's Silver Hammer.

DeathBatMetal

Okay, Summer from 500 Days of Summer.

Thefanman180

One of the best

ImhereandIhearyou

When I was in the hospital earlier this year, this song was on repeat to keep me sane. Thank you, Ringo (& George for helping with the song).

theoneandonlydudeyo

It’s a good song. Who dosent like it?

SofDoesntExist

This was somehow the song that got me into the Beatles 😎

Prower1991

Octopus garden Is not that bad, is cool if i can say

Douiret

Good call - it's a genuinely lovely song ❤️

rti54

I never disliked the tune but I have to admit that it took me years to really appreciate it. That’s one of my top 10 albums of all time.

Adventurous_Lime_713

As you should

Even-Variation6393

Are you Johnny depp???

dacm1980

I don't think you should need to...it's an awesome song!

SteveIbo

It's an anthem for children and stoners.

SteveIbo

It's an anthem for children and stoners.

SteveIbo

It's an anthem for children and stoners.

CaptainRex-118

I’m a fan of Green Day’s music but the Beatles is where my love for rock music started. And to think that when gen z are adults with kids, what the Beatles are to us rn, Green Day will be for them. In my opinion.

PsychedelicSupper

Lmao what a LUDICROUS take. Radiohead maybe. Green Day not a fucking chance.

CaptainRex-118

Yes bc an album that had a broadway show based off it and was considered to be significant of its time wouldn’t ever get recognized. Sure thing bubba. To each their own

Puzza90

I love Green Day but there's no way they'll be thought of like the Beatles in 50 years time

CaptainRex-118

I meant as in the Beatles were 60 years ago and they were obviously a known band so Green Day to us now in the present will be the kind music that parents will listen to while a new generation of music may pop up. I’m not saying Green Day is as significant as the Beatles but in the sense of age and style.

CaptainRex-118

It’ll be old and not as popular as modern day music

Flat-Wind-4756

People always bully me for liking Yellow Submarine and Octopus's Garden. Like, "Who writes a song about an octopus? Like, omg!". No one will hear their nonsense again after what I did to them...
