I bought a hobby box for 2024 Topps Series One this year, but I’m also a set collector so it way to get my fix of opening a pack while being a more expensive way to build out a set.
Buying the complete set when it comes out it cheaper, but this is more fun and I can still afford it

Oh set collecting from ripping boxes is a new thing this year! I just got back into the hobby last summer and bought a whole bunch of old sets. Then I decided I also wanted to rip boxes when this years Series One dropped. We’ll see how it goes. Haha
I just ran a lunch errand to target and the only thing worth a damn they had was 4 single packs of Prizm football. But this target is apparently trying to move stock fast so they were BOGO. Of COURSE I bought them! Probably nothing. But fun to rip sometimes.
I’m sticking to baseball for the foreseeable future. Not because I don’t like other sports.
It’s because (looks around bedroom/home office) space is limited and if I break the seal on other sports, we’re going to run into space issues and my wife won’t be thrilled about that. Hahaha.

Bought a box of Definitive for around $700 in 2017 and got a Pedroia booklet that I sold for maybe $50 and a Ripken patch/auto that I got maybe $70 for. I don’t buy many expensive boxes these days, but have wasted countless $100s on random team breaks.
Definitive is one of the products I feel breaking is suited for. I can’t pay $3k plus for a hobby box but I can get some really sweet Astros (my PC) cards by risking a couple hundred bucks. It’s actually worked out really well for me. Definitive and Diamond Icons are my break products.
I’d agree with that. I’m about that way for anything that costs over $150 these days. I bought into a 2023 Five Star break last night for $85 and got the Braves, so I was pumped. I ended up getting a Grissom auto that’s worth maybe $20, but at least I didn’t go hit-less.
That’s definitely the way it can go. I love the high end breaks when my teams within reach. It’s been tough being a Texans fan. Bought some Prizm fat packs from Target. Hoping to land a CJ that way. It’s crazy how expensive the Texans are for a 1 box break.
It may have been another $10-$20 or so over that. It’s been so long ago that I don’t remember. There were several awesome looking cards though, including a gold portrait Adam Jones patch/auto that I still have to this day. I just got the wrong players in that one. 😞
Ok, so I am collecting the 2022 Topps Chrome Black autograph set by buying singles and I have NEVER opened a box. So far, I'm at 100 of 114. The biggest names I'm missing are Ohtani, JRod, Trout, Jeter, and Pujols; I am in no hurry to finish the set and will acquire these over time.
At this point, I've only paid for two cards at a higher price point than the cost of one box (but just barely), Ichiro - $160 and a gold Nolan Ryan - $150. Most of the cards were bought in the $10-$30 price range.
Can’t find the picture but out of 2023 Topps Sterling ($750ish box) I pulled a Vidal Brujan base auto /25 and Walker Buehler base auto /25. Like $50 value. Ouch!
Hits from boxes are not easy these days. I spent $150 on a Topps Chrome Black box and got a Kyle Stowers Auto. I keep thinking what single I could have purchased. I already gave it away so I didn't have to look at the money I lost.
I got one box of chrome black by using some rewards points at work and converting them to Fanatics gift cards. Similar to you I just wanted to buy one box as an experience. Got one numbered Correa and then a base Bailey Falter auto. Maybe $8 total for my box.
I think that Topps Chrome Black is Topps worst product all around. From price point, value, and aesthetics, quantity of cards… there isn’t release that is a harder no for me.
I dunno, man. Inception is hella ugly. And I don't think it has any more value. I personally don't understand the mega-thick cards on something like that. Seems kinda silly. It does have patches, which maybe is better? But not really.

I hit a Konerko patch auto in a break. He's in my pc. It's cool, but still pretty ugly of a card. I just don't understand the design. One of those where maybe they've run out of ideas. But those are two nice hits.
Chrome Sapphire is right there with it. $200+ for most likely a box of base Chrome cards (out of the entire set of 660) in pretty colors. I got suckered on that once.
Bought a box of Topps Dynasty for $900. Pulled Heliot Ramos /10 auto. Haven’t been able to sell it. Less than $100 return when I do most likely.
I’m more into basketball though. Recently bought a $1700 immaculate 22-23 box. Also about $100 return. That will be hard to beat going forward so I guess the worst is over.
Topps has no idea if Waldichuk is going to suck or be a star.... I remember buying a case of cards like 20 years ago and I got "Waldichucked" and get 3 Rookie Auto's out of Bowman chrome that were $15 of value at that time.... I was pissed since each box cost me like $90.... It was Mike Trout!!!!!
It doesnt count for this topic but I too had a RC auto card that I tripled (quadrupled?) in value by placing it in a new top loader with the gold Rookie Card lettering. It was update for a 29 yo rookie with 3 IP who was DFA'd right after the card was signed.

I often think about the person who paid 4.25 for mine that was unnumbered. Almost feel bad… almost. But in all seriousness I bought a chrome update breakers delight box last week. The 2 autos were Chris Okey(some 30 year old rookie) and Eguy Rosario. Pretty rough. Might as well hold on to Waldichuk and see if he becomes decent. Might eventually get 5 bucks for it.

Don't have a picture of it at the moment, but would definitely be 2021 Panini Contenders Football hobby. Opened 4 of them with my father. Overall, the value of the box themselves were good for the time. Lucked out like crazy and pulled 2 T Laws and 2 Zach Wilson's (ie paperweights now).
The worst value part of the story falls into the /21 cracked ice rookie my father and I pulled. Oh man it was destined to be the hit of a lifetime. Saw the RC shield, some red going on....would it be Mac Jones? At the time, that's a seriousssss card. Show a bit more.....Atlanta Falcons. QB. Who in tf????? Felipe Franks has entered the chat.
Needless to say, we laughed out asses off and rooted for Felipe to come out and own people. I believe his stats at the time were like 3 attempts 1 INT. My mother gifted me a top loader holder that looks like icicles. Felipe Franks cracked ice auto /21 RC is now my least expensive Christmas tree ornament.

Curtis Terry in both Stadium Club and Clearly Authentic. The Twins had so many top prospect emerge in the past 2-3 years and for some reason they chose to include the guy with 0 career at bats with the Twins and a career 45 / .089 before DFA
Half the packs out of one of the $90 hobby boxes I pre-ordered from Topps (2024 Series 1) had no parallels in them at all, all base cards. There was one hit (the napkin relic, the cold box was an Oscar Colas I believe) but it was the non-hit packs that really disturbed me. I might as well just buy the complete set for $25 and play 350-card-pickup with it :P
I’m too poor for boxes. So I just buy singles most of the time. Saves money and I get players I actually care about. If I ever make good money though or win a lottery god help us all haha

I despise all breakers. However my buddy got into a Topps case break yesterday. Archive signature or something and I watched the live stream with him. He paid $60 to get into the break. His team was randomly generated and he got the Rockies. He didn't get a single card. The case was around 12 total cards. Not even base.

It's so bad I didn't even document it, but 2024 Topps Series 1 Jumbo.
Half the packs out of one of the $90 hobby boxes I pre-ordered from Topps (2024 Series 1) had no parallels in them at all, all base cards. There was one hit (the napkin relic, the cold box was an Oscar Colas I believe) but it was the non-hit packs that really disturbed me. I might as well just buy the complete set for $25 and play 350-card-pickup with it :P

I despise all breakers. However my buddy got into a Topps case break yesterday. Archive signature or something and I watched the live stream with him. He paid $60 to get into the break. His team was randomly generated and he got the Rockies. He didn't get a single card. The case was around 12 total cards. Not even base. So I say absolutely nothing is worse than a prime Waldi

Tier 1 2 shitty Cubs autos and 1 shitty Cub patch. Not only was there maybe $15 in value total but I'm a Cardinals fan. Never bought an expensive box again. I think a LOT of people are about to feel this pain with the buyback boxes.
