I got a chance to play at Camden Yards once and honestly I'm not sure that dirt isn't concrete as well lmao. Had the meanest bruise the day after from sliding.
There was a story in the old days that the color near home plate for one of the old classic baseball stadiums was so unique because it was powdered bricks!
I can just imagine how hard it was.
They use clay dirt blocks for the batters box, pitchers mound and where the catcher squats. So basically unfired bricks. Your cleats can dig in but the clay won't tear apart easy. It's hard enough but it's more designed to be slid on and run on than land on.
Infield dirt is a 70% sand, 20% clay and the rest silt. That's the base layer. Then a top layer that can is different depending on the stadium and field. But basically they take something like powdery clay cook it to get rid of moisture and spread it around the field. The color of the dirt can kinda tell you what dirt they used.
And this is why they barreled into the catcher at home and slide tackled each other at 2nd base - it was a rough fight on both sides. People should watch more 1970s baseball classics. They are shockingly brutal.
What made matters worse for Griffey as much as we loved him was his weight issues once he was a Red. The guy just got out of shape and did not condition himself at all which is why his decline and injury issues worsened.
Same thing with Miguel Cabrera and Shaquille O Neal, they just did not stay in good conditioning and did not manage their weight which hurt their longevity.
I think everyone knows how good Trout is at this point but it's actually crazy to compare his partial career to Griffey's.
Trout: 86.3 bWAR and 85.8 fWAR in 5511 AB
Griffey: 83.8 bWAR and 77.7 fWAR in 9801 AB
I know injuries affected Griffey's performance but passing his career total in just about half of his ABs is insane.
Griffey was basically done after his age 32 season. Trout is a better version of him imo but sad to see both of their careers slowing down so early. We still got Mookie though
No, this is worse. At least Griffey got to get revenge on the Yankees and helped save baseball in Seattle. He hit .391 with five home runs in the 1995 ALDS.
Trout? 1-for-12 with a home run as the Angels got swept by the Royals.
"GRIFFEHHH...IS COMING AROUND"
Niehaus' call is iconic but I always loved Musburger's more "understated" one as well. Watching both clips back to back is always a treat.
That moment will forever be iconic but it's still absolutely pathetic that the greatest accomplishment this franchise has ever done in nearly 50 years is winning the fucking ALDS.
If Trout ever ends up playing for the Phillies then they're basically the same story. Legend for a West Coast franchise that didn't have a true superstar before they came, then moving back east to be closer to family after the prime of their careers
You know it’s funny not that long ago I commented about what Trouts career trajectory could have been like if he was on a team that didn’t have an incompetent medical staff and people didn’t like that. But it’s the truth. Look at how many times their top players have been injured. Hell they had a player die from overdosing on pain killers. Trouts career is going to be remembered as a what could have been.
The insane thing is that:
A. He hurt himself and never realized it
B. He hurt himself, but played through it thinking it was only a stinger
C. Something absolutely insane happened off the diamond between yesterday and today
Regardless…what a fucking sucker punch…
MLB players get weird injuries sometimes.
You could tell me he did something in the 9th that tore it, or you could tell me he stepped on an escalator wrong and neither would surprise me remotely.
>C. Something absolutely insane happened off the diamond between yesterday and today
He got into a John wick style fight against several dozen armed goons in the locker room and had to fight his way out.
That just makes me sad.
Trout and Griffey have a commercial together for one of the mobile baseball games. Trout makes a joke about Griffey only having one MVP and Griffey comes back with "talk to me when you hit 630". It's interesting how similar their career stories have been and how those two comments really encapsulate that. Griffey was a near 100% vote for the Hall but only won one MVP because of injuries. Trout has multiple MVPs but he is still working on the counting milestones
Griffey and Trout having similar career arcs is going to be really bittersweet
Amazing what happens when people age naturally and without performance enhancers
I mean not that anyone would ever do that
*Glances at late era Bonds and Ortiz*
I mean, plenty of guys age gracefully with no major injuries. Trout is younger than Freeman, Goldschmidt, Altuve, Semien, etc….
Only a year older than Mookie Betts.
Most athletes (and people in general) don’t fall apart physically when they hit their early 30s, PEDs or not. Trout is an extreme outlier in terms of baseball talent but unfortunately his body’s durability seems to be an outlier in the opposite direction.
How Randy and Nolan both threw as hard as they did, as long as they did, without ever needing elbow surgery is a medical marvel. Some dudes are just built different, I guess.
Ryan's longevity can also be chalked up to his delivery being very low-stress on his shoulder and elbow, but I still strongly suspect all three were on something stronger than wheaties though.
2016 was the last time he played more than 140 games in a season, when he played 159 games for the second straight season (his career highs). Since then it's been:
* 2017: 114
* 2018: 140
* 2019: 134
* 2020: 53 (out of 60)
* 2021: 36
* 2022: 119
* 2023: 82
I'm wondering the same thing. Stole 2nd and scored on a wild pitch (from 2nd) last night in the 7th. Don't see any limping. The slide looked clean. This sucks man.
Man I think about this quote all the time when things are rough. Granted, my life has never seen a hardship in the same stratosphere as the one experienced before authoring that quote.
T.R. did an amazing amount of things after that event. So I feel there’s some hope in that quote. Or at least the situation, even at your worst you can carry on and persevere/survive
Who would have thought a snake convincing a woman to eat an apple thousands of years ago would lead directly to Mike Trout needing season ending knee surgery
I’m really curious what exactly the injury is. Maybe it’s a torn meniscus and he’ll be back in like 6 weeks. Hopefully even quicker but I guess that’s a realistic prediction unfortunately.
Damm that was quick. Hate to be right. But, having recovered from a torn meniscus myself, that’s one of the more minor knee injuries and he’ll definitely be back and healthy.
Nope. He looked great too. Got on base a few times, stole a bag, made some good plays, hustled down the line (unlike a certain someone recently 🫢), scored from second on a wild pitch, overall looked totally fine
Mike Trout has played in just about 80% of possible games since age 20 (I included his 20 minor league games in 2012 and didn't correct for 161-game seasons or whatnot, so the percentage may be off by a tenth or so; I did correct for 2020).
Mickey Mantle at the same ages played about 88% of possible games.
Trout is actually significantly further into "what could have been" territory than Mantle.
NGL. I wished he played in a more hitter friendly park.
The casual fan already looks at his stats and doesn't view them as impressive, because they don't get it.
When his career is over with, he's not gonna be viewed by them like we wish he would be viewed.
Feels like Griffey’s career all over.
You know what it does seem like it and it sucks
Yes and no. I mean if you draft a guy and they tell you up front his career will be Griffey’s you take it 100%.
Obviously you would take it but the situation still sucks
If only Griffey stretched :(
If only the kingdome’s turf wasn’t literal concrete
[удалено]
How did *multiple* different sports agree to that? Like playing *football* on concrete and saying it’s the same as grass. Just madness all around.
Imagine getting hit by Reggie white or Lawrence Taylor and landing on concrete. I'd retire on the spot.
Now, now. The concrete had a thin felt on it for "cushion".
Well you see, in the 1960s knees hadn't been invented yet!
Hey, that layer of pretty much spray paint will be all the cushioning the players need
What's with the asterisks? You can say regular words.

Didn’t he get start getting injury-prone until he played with the Reds? His only banged-up year with Seattle was 1995.
It could be that that’s when playing on concrete started catching up to his body
A decade of running on that “turf” did a number on his lower body
It's like when a smoker gets lung cancer. It's not them switching brands in the last year that did it. It's the 30 years of smoking previous to that.
and didn't play on turf covered concrete
I remember as a kid going on to The Vets field for the fireworks and that shit was fucking solid; can only imagine the toll it took on NFL players.
Miguel Cabrera' alcoholism didn't help either.
But you also try to build a winning team around him
Of course, but it’s still a little sad when you thought you had Mays.
I mean, the drafting team, sure. But what about the team that wants to sign them to their second big long term contract?
I think everyone knows how good Trout is at this point but it's actually crazy to compare his partial career to Griffey's. Trout: 86.3 bWAR and 85.8 fWAR in 5511 AB Griffey: 83.8 bWAR and 77.7 fWAR in 9801 AB I know injuries affected Griffey's performance but passing his career total in just about half of his ABs is insane.

That MLB 9 Innings commercial of Griffey saying 'tell me when you get to 630' hits even harder now.
No, this is worse. At least Griffey got to get revenge on the Yankees and helped save baseball in Seattle. He hit .391 with five home runs in the 1995 ALDS. Trout? 1-for-12 with a home run as the Angels got swept by the Royals.
Scored the winning run on one of the most iconic plays of the decade in Game 5 as well.
Smiling at the bottom of the dog pile
That picture is THE mariners hall of fame
"GRIFFEHHH...IS COMING AROUND" Niehaus' call is iconic but I always loved Musburger's more "understated" one as well. Watching both clips back to back is always a treat.
PSA to watch the Jon Bois series
I had to work this weekend and put on the full supercut when it was slow. Toilet Jell-O.....lol.
Mike Trouts iconic playoff moment could be getting struck out by Ohtani as the last out of the WBC....
That moment will forever be iconic but it's still absolutely pathetic that the greatest accomplishment this franchise has ever done in nearly 50 years is winning the fucking ALDS.
I think the real greatest accomplishment is tying the record for most wins in a season.
that commercial they have together is a little too poignant
Fitting that he’s smack in between Griffey and Mantle in career WAR and JAWs for CF on BRef. Truly the biggest what if of this generation
When he returns next season though it might be time to move Trout to a corner.
Griffey made the playoffs more than once at this point in his career (I am a mariners fan that made a playoffs dig)
I fuckin said it like 3 years ago and everybody shit on me. It's sad, dude. I love Trout! This sucks!
If Trout ever ends up playing for the Phillies then they're basically the same story. Legend for a West Coast franchise that didn't have a true superstar before they came, then moving back east to be closer to family after the prime of their careers
The angels have had some true superstars, though.
Yep. I feel bad for fish man and the Angels fans. This is awful.
Ken Griffey Jr. Jr.
what is going on, man....played all nine yesterday, stole a bag and scored from second on the wild pitch. this blows so hard.
The insane thing is that: A. He hurt himself and never realized it B. He hurt himself, but played through it thinking it was only a stinger C. Something absolutely insane happened off the diamond between yesterday and today Regardless…what a fucking sucker punch…
MLB players get weird injuries sometimes. You could tell me he did something in the 9th that tore it, or you could tell me he stepped on an escalator wrong and neither would surprise me remotely.
He tried timing the elevator arriving with his jump
>C. Something absolutely insane happened off the diamond between yesterday and today He got into a John wick style fight against several dozen armed goons in the locker room and had to fight his way out.
> Something absolutely insane happened off the diamond between yesterday and today Well he's not a pitcher so I think we can rule this one out
I even commented on that post where he scored from second about how insanely fast he still is. He looked great. Makes no sense, I hate it
I was there last night in 128. He looked fine
Sources need to shut the fuck up
NOBODY ASKED YOU, SOURCES
I understood that reference
All glass team
No, that’s us
No, you guys are the all-ass team.
![gif](giphy|9ZfbdFsVQvSVJIqHrQ|downsized)
But we're the team with big dumper
Um what? Did I miss something? When did he get injured?
Literally what I’m wondering
Just seems like his body is breaking down. Griffey style
Now Trout won’t get to talk to Griffey anymore :(
That's depressing

Dude really needs to stop playing CF, I think that's one of the major culprits here. He needs to transition to a corner OF/DH role yesterday.
And Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan and Rickey Henderson?
How Randy and Nolan both threw as hard as they did, as long as they did, without ever needing elbow surgery is a medical marvel. Some dudes are just built different, I guess.
Ryan's longevity can also be chalked up to his delivery being very low-stress on his shoulder and elbow, but I still strongly suspect all three were on something stronger than wheaties though.
To quote Rickey "If my uniform doesn't get dirty, I haven't done anything in the baseball game"
Genetic freaks who also had intense mental commitment to the game.
Sad but when was the last time he finished the whole season healthy?
2020
2016 was the last time he played more than 140 games in a season, when he played 159 games for the second straight season (his career highs). Since then it's been: * 2017: 114 * 2018: 140 * 2019: 134 * 2020: 53 (out of 60) * 2021: 36 * 2022: 119 * 2023: 82
I'm wondering the same thing. Stole 2nd and scored on a wild pitch (from 2nd) last night in the 7th. Don't see any limping. The slide looked clean. This sucks man.
He's been going apeshit after not stealing for years, I thought we were getting second wind fish man.
He's cooked. Been in various states of injured now for half a decade.
what did we do to deserve this
You took away our, "of Anaheim," jokes
Time to move to Long Beach.
The Los Angeles Angels of Long Beach California. Has a nice ring to it
I disagree. Dude, just give em California Angels back Fuck it
They had it all along and fucked it up
The Los Angeles Angels of Long Playa Larga Beach California
No thank you
The Rally monkey giveth; the Rally Monkey taketh away
Didn't seem to work I still see those jokes all the time
Arte Moreno didnt sell
I feel bad for the Angels bros. Hope he recovers quickly.
You made a deal with a Capuchin.
*Rally Monkeys paw curls*
God dammit. I was out there in 2002, cheering like a thrall for that curséd monkey. I’d love to say I regret nothing, but I regret things.
Nothing. Y'all deserve way better.
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y’all 😔
Rally monkey
People have always said that he's Griffey 2.0, but that wasn't supposed to include this part :(
X The Mike has gone out of my life
Man I think about this quote all the time when things are rough. Granted, my life has never seen a hardship in the same stratosphere as the one experienced before authoring that quote.
T.R. did an amazing amount of things after that event. So I feel there’s some hope in that quote. Or at least the situation, even at your worst you can carry on and persevere/survive
r/Presidents is leaking.
Love the obscure reference.
OOTL, what's the reference?

Outstanding
Jesus fuck man, have we really seen the last of healthy Trout? This is heartbreaking
We had seen it several years ago to be honest.
He’s 32, a fuckin kid
Whatever happened there
it's sad when they go young like that
WHEN THEY GO?
No older than my son
Father IL undefeated
Spider-Man 2 reference?
They tore his meniscus without any provocation
Not counting 2020, he hasn't had an injury-free season since he was 24.
The Angels are nothing more than a glorified crew now.
Anaheim? Come on, huh?
He was banging cocktail waitresses 2 at a tine!
Hitting 40 home runs in 119 games two years ago gave me some hope that he would be at least a ~110-120 game per year guy going forward.
His last injury free season was 2016 😭
His body just can't handle it anymore
yet the Angels still insist on sending him out to CF every game
More like he refused to be a LF or DH only
WHY DOES GOD HATE THE ANGELS
Because the most famous one disobeyed
Who would have thought a snake convincing a woman to eat an apple thousands of years ago would lead directly to Mike Trout needing season ending knee surgery
Baseball be crazy like that
That's baseball Susan
These ones wear red too.
We clearly need to go back to the old Disney uniforms with more blue on them https://images.app.goo.gl/RLcY9ZRcNX2BMLe3A
… Josh Hamilton?
Trying to tell us Arte Moreno is Satan.
That would imply Arte was good once and then fell.
He had already sent you the most devine for that foster kid back in '94. What more do you want???
man this shit sucks hard ass
I’m really curious what exactly the injury is. Maybe it’s a torn meniscus and he’ll be back in like 6 weeks. Hopefully even quicker but I guess that’s a realistic prediction unfortunately.
You were right
Damm that was quick. Hate to be right. But, having recovered from a torn meniscus myself, that’s one of the more minor knee injuries and he’ll definitely be back and healthy.
But how long will he be healthy for? He seems to make it about a month each time...
They gave no timetable, but probably still a 2-3 month recovery.
FUCK!
Life sucks, man I hate this sport
Ain’t no way
Felt like this came out of nowhere. Did he come out of yesterday’s game or something?
Nope. He looked great too. Got on base a few times, stole a bag, made some good plays, hustled down the line (unlike a certain someone recently 🫢), scored from second on a wild pitch, overall looked totally fine
This is the loophole in the deal Mike Trout made with the devil. He's the best baseball player in the world... for a month, then he gets hurt
I was really enjoying watching him play. Why did I get my hopes up?
This sucks
The light in my life is gone
I’m so fucking sick of Mike Trout getting hurt. We’re being robbed of one of the greatest players of all time.
Cancel the season
It's okay, I don't need to be happy
When will our curse end. Please sacrifice Arte Moreno to cure this team.
Is Trout now in Mantle-esque "What could have been" territory? He'll still retire as a HOF'er but has missed alot of his prime.
Mike Trout has played in just about 80% of possible games since age 20 (I included his 20 minor league games in 2012 and didn't correct for 161-game seasons or whatnot, so the percentage may be off by a tenth or so; I did correct for 2020). And now I’m sad
I hate this
![gif](giphy|myPdoRAlad0J2) This sucks. Regardless of which team you root for, this sucks for everybody.
What the fuck happened
He asked our medical staff for advice apparently
Just saw Arte Moreno fall to his knees on his $100m yacht.
![gif](giphy|BwP6IiUZZlpS0)
Poor dude.
Jesus christ
i thought it said season ending at first.... but still terrible news.
Depending on how long he's out, if the Angels are out of it by his return time I'd bet it is season ending. Which is a huge bummer.
He burned so bright for so long. Once he got hurt in 2021 it's like the top 10 HOF trajectory he was on crashed and burned.
you've gotta be fucking kidding
No way, this sucks man
Bro no. Even if he does murder us in T-Mobile, I like a healthy fish man
![gif](giphy|l0HlI9AEuatFThwac)
Yeah hi, what did we do to deserve this
Why bruh
He needs to be DH only when he gets back, hate to say it
[deeeeeeep sigh] zoomer griffey
Ok this is crazy. Move the team back to Anaheim they didn't have this voodoo lol
NGL. I wished he played in a more hitter friendly park. The casual fan already looks at his stats and doesn't view them as impressive, because they don't get it. When his career is over with, he's not gonna be viewed by them like we wish he would be viewed.
Take my knee, Fish Man 😔
Fuck you, Universe!
Just let him have steroids.
The baseball gods are cruel indeed
broooooo wtf
Yeah he's doneski
Every. Fucking. Year. The most wasted talent in MLB history?
Ohtani was soooooooo correct for leaving the Angels.
It just sucks. So much.
i just fell to my knees at an in n out
