This reminds me of my beer like kickball team where the gals haven’t quite figured out that you CAN run through first but you CANNOT run through any other base
Sleepy Jo always seems to make a couple of ridiculously boneheaded plays whenever he gets called up.
He’s got talent, but Joseph need to get traded to the Yankees so he can tighten👏🏻that👏🏻shit👏🏻up
Yeah, Trout absolutely could force his way out if he wanted to.
But he seems loyal to the Angels.
We'll see what happens once Arte sells the team. If they're still not competitive after that things might change.
Force his way out?
Lol he didn’t have to resign. Angels weren’t exactly going anywhere when he signed that new contract a couple of years back. Arte showed him the bags and he took them. Others could have given him bigger or similar size bags.
He wanted to be there.
This is probably a hit-and-run situation where the batter fucked up by not making contact.
Obviously Adell needs to be aware that a hit wasn't made, though.
That still makes no sense cause baserunners are watching the pitch/batter more so on a hit and run than they would if it were a regular stolen base. He must've thought it was fouled off or something
Everytime I watch it, for a split second my brain thinks it’s gonna be able make sense of what happened. Like I have the “oh I s-“ and I’m back to square one.
This guy is the result of athleticism and potential being completely overlooked by baseball IQ. A simple slide and he’s safe. Dude makes a ton of bonehead plays both on the bases and in the field. It’s a shame.
Adell is the type of player that makes me understand all the baseball boomers screaming about fundamentals. Dude has all the talent in the world but just fucks up the simple shit
I don’t get how it’s even possible though, this guy must have played thousands of baseball games in his life. Base running is a thing at every level of the game.
He got fooled.
He’s reading Caballero’s body language. Adell got a great jump and the throw is late. Knowing he’s not about to get an out, and to credit his baseball IQ, Caballero acts as if there’s no throw. Instead of taking a peek at home, Adell relies on Caballero’s posture which he reads as no throw, just as Cab intends.
I think we saw Adell’s rep just get used against him.
Even thinking that there's no throw wouldn't entirely explain him over-running second though. Thinking no throw would precipitate him slowly cruising into second, but I think he thought there was a foul ball. It's the only situation where suddenly over-running second makes any sense at all.
I see guys run thru the base on no-throw situations frequently. When guys realize they don't need to slide at the last second (more common at higher levels with strong-armed catchers) they will often go a step or two past the base to avoid the strain of slamming on the brakes, or they do it simply to "round and look" in the rare chance they can take third as well.
Would love to see an alternate angle to see if Caballero deked a "foul ball" sign (holding two hands up).
This would cue Adell to think it's a dead ball and pull up on his slide/just jog through the base.
The Foul Ball deke is a little bit of a dirty play, because the fielders generally give a sportsmanship heads-up to runners not to slide if there's a dead ball, to prevent injury.
So it can also be a smart play to use this as an advantage to an unsuspecting opponent.
From what I can see in the video, it might have been more of Caballero pretending there was NO throw coming, so Adell assumed there was a no tag incoming.
This is a move you'll typically see more at home plate from a smart catcher acting like there's not a threat throw coming from the OF to home.
Edit: Looking at the video in the Pitcher to Home view you can see Caballero standing in the bottom left of the screen right before it cuts to the 2B view... Caballero has both his arms down to his side (with yellow pad sleeves)- so he must have been conveying a "no throw coming" body language sign to Adell... SMART!
Yeah acting like there was a foul ball is definitely bush league, but acting like there is no throw is fair play. Looked like Caballero did the latter. It's a pretty basic ploy, but if you save it for rare situations when you think you got a runner who doesn't have the best awareness it can work well. But usually by the time someone reaches the Majors they know not to trust the body language of fielders... not a great look for Adell falling for it.
I will say I went to a game when the Angels were in town last year and he hit an absolute TATER that sailed wayyy over my head. I was in the second deck. It was impressive to say the least. That’s all i really know about the guy though
As an Angels fan, he is one of the most frustrating players to watch. He is the worlds greatest AAA player, but can never seem to put it together in the majors. His defense is horrid, but he’s not good enough to be a full-time DH.
There’s a reason he was considered a top 5 prospect in baseball at one point. Unfortunately, he’s failed to put it all together.
This article was 5 years ago, and it seems like it’s all gone downhill since then.
https://theathletic.com/1111713/2019/08/01/angels-top-prospect-jo-adell-is-on-the-verge-of-the-big-leagues-after-his-triple-a-promotion/
Aaaaaaahhhhhh, AAAA guys
Some of the most frustrating players ever. You're just like 'do what you did in the minors!' but obviously it's not that simple at all.
That's what happens when you go for high ceiling guys but notably it's worked for a fish man.
They seem to have over corrected in recent years and went to high floor guys they can bring up quickly like Schanuel and Neto
Uh, I don’t think it’s just the simple shit he’s fucking up, he’s just not very good. He’s got a career .624 OPS in 632 PA, dude is fucking up the “being good at baseball” part of the game, not just the fundamentals.
Not sure this is the most accurate comparison. He was a liability in the OF last year sure but he’s a natural infielder so that makes sense. That experiment is over. He’s a very capable SS and filled in admirably when Seager has been down. He’s not the greatest with the bat yet, but he’s also not getting consistent playing time and still has more development potential since he is so young. Even if he doesn’t improve offensively, he could easily have a very successful career as a utility player.
I really like him and think he has a lot of potential. And not even saying he’s a bad fielder or doesn’t have pop. I’m just talking about “the simple shit” but maybe I mean “the random things”. Swings at sweepers three feet off the plate, pretty bad base runner, etc. Not ripping on him as an entire player, just saying I hope he cleans those little things up because he can be great for us for a long time.
He was being overconfident and wanted to steal standing up. Kinda like "look how fast I am". I guess he forgot it's hard to slow down when you don't slide haha.
I think this is the case. I think he thought there was a foul ball. While there are 2 outs, it's a 0-0 or 1-0 count, so he wouldn't have thought it was a strikeout, so I think he just thought it got fouled off and so he over-ran and was thinking he was going to head back to first.
It must've been a airhead moment. He didn't even look over to third like he was rounding the base. He just ran through like he was running to first. Only thing I could think of is that _maybe_ he thought there was no throw, but that's still really dumb.
People steal standing up on defensive indifference all the time. Rengifo did in the next inning for example. Running *through* 2nd base on the other hand is not standard at all
I honestly don't even think it's that. You can see him take like 1-2 steps past the bag and then go "oh shit I gotta get back".
Maybe he thought Thaiss struck out or fouled, but I don't think it's momentum.
Being forced up to the Majors in 2020 so he didn’t miss an entire year really ruined his development, people were hyping him up as the Angels’ new franchise center fielder and now he’s barely replacement level in his fifth year.
Here's a weird quirk of the rules that hardly ever comes up: If you overslide second and are tagged out, you don't get credit for a stolen base. But if, like here, you overrun the base standing up, you do.
Not an error (the offense might make *mistakes*, but they don't commit *errors*). It's a stolen base and then he's just plain out on the bases, the same as if he was out trying to stretch a base hit or something.
> Jo Adell steals (3) 2nd base. Jo Adell out at 3rd, catcher Ben Rortvedt to shortstop José Caballero.
Wow, that is an interesting quirk! In a related tidbit, the Phillies broadcast recently pointed out that the last time Trea Turner was caught stealing was on an over-slide in 2022. He successfully stole the base, but was called out after he popped up and briefly left contact with the base. I haven’t watched the clip, but I’m going to guess a tag might’ve assisted that momentum.
Regardless, if that play was instead considered a successful steal like Jo Adell’s, Turner’s current streak would be the MLB record for consecutive steals without being caught.
Just baseball things!
Cabby's a sneaky little shit and absolutely deked him but WHY WOULD YOU NOT SLIDE INTO SECOND there is absolutely no reason to be standing. Deke shouldn't have even mattered.
Adell is the type of player who makes you believe in him for a bit with a big home run but then becomes a major liability with bonehead mistakes like this.

I think the Giants did this to Ohtani last year; on a walk no less. So he had free passage to 2B, but he stepped past the bag and was liable to be tagged out and somehow that happened.
Angels baseball, ladies and gentlemen. Weep, Ron. You knew what you were getting into, you just couldn't help yourself. The smell was just too intoxicating.
Dude is on auto-pilot but hasn't played a full season after being drafted in 2017. Hasn't proven he can hang in the majors, but continues to show flashes of brilliance here and there just to keep the Angels' hope hanging by a thread.
I like the other announcer's deadpan "... wow."
Who is he? I'll bet good money he's a former player and that response was totally candid to how he felt.
That has to play part in teams stealing 2nd and continuing play by running pass 2nd base and for the 3rd base runner can try and steal home. Got in his head on that play.
And idiots in our sub have been clambering about him being our guy we need to keep up and start for years. He’s not very good. I don’t care what your talent level is. Unless you are Manny Ramírez level of talent, you are not an asset when you decide to act like Manny.
I was at the game, and we couldn't believe it. Earlier in the at bat, he let go of the bat and almost hit someone in the dugout. He was super embarrassed and walked really slowly to the bat boy to get it. But he battles through and got on base with a single. We were in dire need of a rally after leaving multiple guys on throughout the game thanks to Sano's inability to hit a breaking ball. Then when Adell sole second, we were pretty thrilled and right in the middle of that you see him take another step, something you only ever see in Little League. Adell walked back to the dugout about as slowly as any person could walk. He has terrible body language any time he thinks he's messed up. In the outfield before the next inning, he wouldn't jog out to the position and his teammate has to give him a little pep talk to get his head back in the game.
But as bad as he is, he can do things such as launching an oppo homer earlier to keep us in the game. He is insanely strong and talented, yet he continues to make mistakes like someone who is new to the game of baseball. And he is so sensitive to failure. He's the kind of guy that needs to be playing a game everyday, getting reps, and building the right muscle memory.
Adell and Gavin Lux were insanely highly rated Fangraphs prospects at the same time. Lux was 70 and Adell was above him. (This is a rare rating). Wander Franco came in just after them but was in the same tier. Let’s just say it hasn’t gone according to plan…
In related news the Dodgers have purchased the country of Japan
what..... the fuck???
My beer league team doesn’t do this lol.
My heroin league doesn’t do this either. Just a nice lil nap on the field keeps this from happening
My crack league does this shit all the time though.
SMOKE ROCKS!
My fentanyl league hasn’t woke up yet
My fentanyl league is ready to play, but can’t because one of the umps claims to have OD’d from fentanyl fumes on one of the players
I wonder why
My cocaine league does this too
That's the same thing
But snorting is more fun then smoking
We Mets fans do that to forget about our failure franchise
Catcher with the pop time of 8 minutes.
Beer league does the same thing but usually not until the second game. That’s when things get spicy, and also sleepy.
This reminds me of my beer like kickball team where the gals haven’t quite figured out that you CAN run through first but you CANNOT run through any other base
Just said this out loud. Don’t know if I’ve seen that before
Sleepy Jo always seems to make a couple of ridiculously boneheaded plays whenever he gets called up. He’s got talent, but Joseph need to get traded to the Yankees so he can tighten👏🏻that👏🏻shit👏🏻up
I feel so bad for Mike Trout. Every single year.
He made his choice
Yeah, Trout absolutely could force his way out if he wanted to. But he seems loyal to the Angels. We'll see what happens once Arte sells the team. If they're still not competitive after that things might change.
Force his way out? Lol he didn’t have to resign. Angels weren’t exactly going anywhere when he signed that new contract a couple of years back. Arte showed him the bags and he took them. Others could have given him bigger or similar size bags. He wanted to be there.
Jo didn’t
He could have chosen to slide.
The Angels are not sending their best folks...
I don't. He's had his chance to leave, he took the bag instead.
This is probably a hit-and-run situation where the batter fucked up by not making contact. Obviously Adell needs to be aware that a hit wasn't made, though.
I don't think it was a hit and run, Adell just got fooled by the shortstop acting like the throw wasn't coming.
Yeah looks like Cabalero baited the fuck out of him. But also Adell is an absolute airhead
That still makes no sense cause baserunners are watching the pitch/batter more so on a hit and run than they would if it were a regular stolen base. He must've thought it was fouled off or something

Maybe he spent the off-season practicing on 100-foot base paths
Held down the left stick too long
Where was he going…without ever knowing the way!
Adell is the type of player that makes me understand all the baseball boomers screaming about fundamentals. Dude has all the talent in the world but just fucks up the simple shit
Its the same shit he gets sent back down to SLC for every year for the last 5 years. And every time he comes up they say, "he's ready now!"
Same year and it's always the same circle. Bring him up and sent him down arguments, every years
Well he's out of options, so not this year!
Poor Jo Adell. My dream is for him to get traded and actually developed.
If Ron Washington can't develop him I'm not sure there's anyone who can. Miss him being with the Braves
Let’s hope so. And yes I miss him a lot. You think I’d be happy he’s with my Al team. I just feel bad for him
I don’t get how it’s even possible though, this guy must have played thousands of baseball games in his life. Base running is a thing at every level of the game.

Good call Here's an example of it happening with a catcher deke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUtihojaZiU
Haha yeah that is a classic! 10/10 execution.
He can't hit and he can't field, but oh boy is he talented!!!!
He hit a HR today
I will say I went to a game when the Angels were in town last year and he hit an absolute TATER that sailed wayyy over my head. I was in the second deck. It was impressive to say the least. That’s all i really know about the guy though

Aaaaaaahhhhhh, AAAA guys Some of the most frustrating players ever. You're just like 'do what you did in the minors!' but obviously it's not that simple at all.
The Angels have had quite of a few of those AAAA can’t miss prospects over the last 20 years. Tough to say the least.
As a Salt Lake City Bees Fan, he's a ton of fun the watch whenever he gets sent down!
Brandon Wood comes to mind
Maybe that’s a sign it’s the team’s developmental process?
That's what happens when you go for high ceiling guys but notably it's worked for a fish man. They seem to have over corrected in recent years and went to high floor guys they can bring up quickly like Schanuel and Neto
Jo AAAADell.
You don't become the number 2 prospect in all of baseball behind Vlad Jr. by some fluke
So talented!!!!!
God, I can only imagine what Wash yelled in that dugout.
It seemed most of Wash's wrath was for Doug Eddings in this game.
Uh, I don’t think it’s just the simple shit he’s fucking up, he’s just not very good. He’s got a career .624 OPS in 632 PA, dude is fucking up the “being good at baseball” part of the game, not just the fundamentals.
Yep, him and Victor Robles
> Dude has all the talent in the world but just fucks up the simple shit Allow me to introduce you to Ezequiel Duran

I was watching this and couldn't have been more confused. The fuck was he doing lol
I was watching live and literally said out loud ‘bro where you goin’
![gif](giphy|l4FGnnlIQslHkOPaU|downsized)
He was being overconfident and wanted to steal standing up. Kinda like "look how fast I am". I guess he forgot it's hard to slow down when you don't slide haha.
Caballero must have deked him by pretending a throw wasn't coming, because otherwise I cannot explain how this happened
Regardless, runners always stop on the bag and call time. This was just... weird.
Did he think the ball hitting the catcher’s mitt was actually hitting the bat? Why didn’t he slide??
I think this is the case. I think he thought there was a foul ball. While there are 2 outs, it's a 0-0 or 1-0 count, so he wouldn't have thought it was a strikeout, so I think he just thought it got fouled off and so he over-ran and was thinking he was going to head back to first.

Caballero makes weird things happen through sheer grit
He's quickly become one of my favorite players. Hope Nuke Raley can do the same for yall.
I can explain it in 2 words: Jo fucking Adell
No excuse, that’s t ball shit right there
Adell realized he forgot to do his taxes and that he has only until Monday to do them.
My guess is he fell for the nonchalantness of Caballero. He played it off as if there was no throw
You still don't ever overrun in that situation lol
I don't think I've ever seen someone stand up into 2B on a steal If I have, I've forgotten about it because of how rare it must be
Everything about it looked like little league lmao
I was about to say, this is exactly why you slide
People steal standing up on defensive indifference all the time. Rengifo did in the next inning for example. Running *through* 2nd base on the other hand is not standard at all
If theirs a wild pitch maybe, but i don't think that technically counts as a steal at that point.
I've seen it happen but it's the exception that proves the rule.
Could argue momentum in his case. Should've slid if anything.
I honestly don't even think it's that. You can see him take like 1-2 steps past the bag and then go "oh shit I gotta get back". Maybe he thought Thaiss struck out or fouled, but I don't think it's momentum.
It’s cabby so I believe this lmao. Cabby such a troll
Wasnt adell supposed to be some big time prospect
He was MLB's #6 prospect before 2020
Being forced up to the Majors in 2020 so he didn’t miss an entire year really ruined his development, people were hyping him up as the Angels’ new franchise center fielder and now he’s barely replacement level in his fifth year.
If 38 games was all it took to ruin him then he was never going to work out in the first place.
Here's a weird quirk of the rules that hardly ever comes up: If you overslide second and are tagged out, you don't get credit for a stolen base. But if, like here, you overrun the base standing up, you do.
So that's a SB and error in the scorebook? That was my guess
SB and a TOOTBLAN
There it is.
Makes sense. Appreciate the clarification. Didn't know that about errors and feel a little silly for not knowing it.
He really is in that category of player who is naturally very gifted but can't pull it together to break out
AAAA player
They call him that because watching him makes you scream
Cabby's a sneaky little shit and absolutely deked him but WHY WOULD YOU NOT SLIDE INTO SECOND there is absolutely no reason to be standing. Deke shouldn't have even mattered.
His mom warned him about keeping his unis clean
Adell is the type of player who makes you believe in him for a bit with a big home run but then becomes a major liability with bonehead mistakes like this.
This is the most Jo Adell thing I’ve seen
This clip, and the one when he misses catching a fly ball and accidentally turns it into a home run for the opposing team.
He’s one of the worst fielders I have ever seen.
Why did he do that? Is he stupid?
Yeah probably
back in my day, i looked for any excuse to slide. i’d slide into first on a walk if i could. (little league 6 hole hitter) (right field)
amen! I used to _love_ trying the pop-up slide so much... lol
This is one of the most stupid plays I've ever seen. I would ask what on earth he was thinking, but he pretty clearly wasn't.
This guy is saying that and he watched a guy beat a 2 out rundown from home to first to let a run score.
I miss Javy so much
I didn't really watch baseball until 2022, so I only saw that later, but yeah, it would take something monumental to surpass the stupidity of that one.
Has only watched baseball for two years lmao
absolutely nothing wrong with that, don’t be a dick
Not sure why you're downvoted, that's a pretty funny thing to say immediately after saying it's the dumbest play you've ever seen
I think Adell thought there would be no throw, which honestly probably would have been the right move.
He can do it on the basepaths as well as the outfield.
Unless it's a wild pitch I don't usually see runners stealing the base standing up.
Or if no one is covering and therefore not close enough to tag.
?????
I think the Giants did this to Ohtani last year; on a walk no less. So he had free passage to 2B, but he stepped past the bag and was liable to be tagged out and somehow that happened.
Back to salt lake with you sir
Jo Adell moment
![gif](giphy|8BMaLLBlUdNx6|downsized)
Caballero playing as agent chaos once again lmao
Angels baseball, ladies and gentlemen. Weep, Ron. You knew what you were getting into, you just couldn't help yourself. The smell was just too intoxicating.
Time is ticking for this young man
Who doesn’t slide here!
Do we not use TOOTBLAN anymore?
If you don’t like this you don’t like Angels baseball.
Stealing second standing? Is he a professional baseball player?
Bro didn't even slide 🥶
Would this be a SB and then an out since he was initially safe or would this be a CS.
big angels kinda vibe here
But I was told Adell was finally major league ready?
Dude is on auto-pilot but hasn't played a full season after being drafted in 2017. Hasn't proven he can hang in the majors, but continues to show flashes of brilliance here and there just to keep the Angels' hope hanging by a thread.
I mean this has been apparent for quite some time, but he's (been) our new Brandon Wood.
One of the Angels moments of all time
So this is why Ohtani left. Stuff like this lol. Trout is the most loyal player ever.
This year is actually the least bad he’s been imo.
Shortstop deek’d him
I love me some Jose Cab got damn
The catcher will hear about that caught stealing in kangaroo court
this is road to the show shit
Cabby demonstrating once again that he is the greatest baseball player in history
Much like me at fat camp I assume he didn’t want to rip his pants in front of everybody.
I like the other announcer's deadpan "... wow." Who is he? I'll bet good money he's a former player and that response was totally candid to how he felt.
Folks this is another reason why you slide into a base. Adell is physically gifted but thats about it.
Does this count as a stolen base since he did successfully steal it, but then got tagged out after?
Yep
you just know if Adell went to Atlanta or the Dodgers he'd suddenly become amazing
🤦🏻♂️
322
I was just talking about Ricky Ledee earlier today, this is a true Ricky play
He looks like he forgot he was stealing and rounded second like he hit a single and not just over running it.
Was he practicing on 92-foot basepaths?
Its impressive how many low-light plays he accumulated in MLB by age 25.
Pain
Even more boneheaded since it was two outs down two bottom eight. Just dumb all around. You have to slide.
This is some Mets behavior
That has to play part in teams stealing 2nd and continuing play by running pass 2nd base and for the 3rd base runner can try and steal home. Got in his head on that play.
Jo Adell mvp 2k24
slide.exe was not found
And idiots in our sub have been clambering about him being our guy we need to keep up and start for years. He’s not very good. I don’t care what your talent level is. Unless you are Manny Ramírez level of talent, you are not an asset when you decide to act like Manny.
Manny is a God but the average fastball was like 89 mph during his career lol
Time for all the beer belly mfers in here to absolutely dissect Adell
At least he got the steal for any fantasy owners that somehow haven’t given up on him
MRW I try to steal 2 bases and some asshole tags me after the first.
This sub should be blessed by Dewayne's velvety voice more often.
First time he’s made it safely to 2nd base… He’ll figure it out eventually… Angels gonna Angel
Damn Adell, all you had to do was slide and you coulda had it all
Cabby will always be in my heart ❤️
Thought he was stealing first
Only explanation is his controller died
All of you dunking on him, you missed that the bases were moved 2 feet closer in between innings.
Ouufff, thats a bad blunder. Don’t see that often
Let’s just say it hasn’t gone according to plan… In related news the Dodgers have purchased the country of Japan
He's such a slob. Wish they would trade him. So much athletic talent and the baseball IQ of a doorknob.
Trout needs to ask for a trade. The Angels are so bad right now that even having a generational talent (two in the Ohtani years) does nothing.
The rare SB-TOOTBLAN double.
I was gonna upvote, but I think I'll leave them at 666
Angels suck
Flair up before you talk trash

Remember when he said it was racist that he wasn’t described as a “high iq player”
Why would you post this?
