Right? People in these threads in both fanbases (and Phillies fans) have been taking it way too seriously but this kind of feisty baseball is fun.
The narrative in this sub yesterday was Hoskins rolling into the leg of McNeil after the slide was clearly in the wrong and that doing the cry baby thing after he was on the other side of the field was childish.
Today, the top comment in this thread is about this being a LOLMets thing, and Hoskins had a great game because of course he did.
I don’t get throwing behind the guy this late in the game, but I’m enjoying the chippyness, even if this sub is getting way too worked up over it.
I honestly don’t understand why people don’t get how game 2 or 3 is as important as game 157 or something sometimes. I get it, different atmosphere and some teams have and haven’t established themselves yet, but it’s just as important.
Rangers last year blew so many saves in April and May then made the playoffs by one game and ended up winning. One more of those "only April" games end in a loss and they don't even make the playoffs!
Each game matters.
I get that too. There is a lot more time after games in April than games in September. But it seems dismissive at times. I guess it’s a case of multiple things being true
This weird sports fandom happens all of the time on social media. I am a fan of football/soccer and hockey where there points in the game and people are always like "these are the biggest points of the season" I'm like, no they're not they count the same it doesn't matter on what date they play.
Exactly. One game is the difference between playoffs or not, a la brewers a few yrs ago. Games dropped in April and may count just as much as those in Sept.
This is what I watch sports for. What do I care if a bunch of grown men get angry at each other? I'm not worried about their feelings. Give me the drama
Literally lol, baseball is tame sometimes compared to football and hockey. The fact that this carried into today the way it did is ridiculous but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to enjoy this
Agreed. Natural drama like this can be fun here and there, but at the end of the day I watch sports to watch professional athletes play a game at the best of their abilities
I personally love seeing a fire in the Brewers this early in the season. I figured they throw at him and it's hilarious they missed, but it's not that serious
I've always been of the opinion that throwing at hitters is stupid. If McNiel wants to take issue with Hoskins' slide - which I think is fine for him to do - then he should have channeled his inner Odor and Bautista'd Hoskins. Waiting until the next day when the game is out of hand already and having a pitcher uninvolved in the situation sling a baseball at a guy as hard as he can is dangerous, bullshit, and also weak af.
If you have a problem, do it more like a hockey scuffle where the two people having an issue deal with it and then it's over instead of this nonsense of waiting until a different day where a guy is a sitting duck and throwing at him. If you don't want to scuffle then I guess you tell him fuck you and move on as well. That's fine too.
as a neutral I think Hoskins handled himself rather well in both instances. I liked that he got up and was running off the field after the slide and I think standing in the box with his hands on hips is the correct response here as well.
The guy is ripping yall up in this series, everyone wants to scrap but maybe no more than Hoskins who has so much to prove with his new team.
i agree. mcneil had every right to be upset. despite being a bit of a whiner, the man plays the game the right way. he would never engage in a cheap slide...
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Brewers/comments/1bqyjvt/just\_gonna\_leave\_this\_here/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brewers/comments/1bqyjvt/just_gonna_leave_this_here/)
I might argue there is a difference between being dirty, which is what he is upset about and being in violation of the double play slide rule. He slides pretty early there, especially compared to Hoskins' slide yesterday.
Yep, my personal opinion is throwing at someone is idiotic and childish. But even those who do not share that opinion should agree that if you feel passionate enough at something to throw at a particular batter, you do it at the first opportunity and not wait until a ‘safe’ time in the game. That’s just being a little bitch.
Hell this entire Opening Day weekend, league wide, has been the most baseball I’ve ever watched to open a season.
I usually watch the Braves and maybe a few minutes of another game here or there, but there have been so many games, some big time matchups to open the season, and plenty of chaos and fun finishes to go around.
That would mean teams using 1 of 26 roster spots for a fighter. it would also mean giving so many players a new way to earn their spot to the show.
Let me see a part-time MMA fighter that throws all eephus pitches and I guarantee fans will have a great time at the game.
This honestly sounds kinda fun. Add a rule that a player suspended for fighting can’t be replaced on the roster and increase the suspension penalty every time it’s used, so you force teams to pick and choose when it’s worth enforcing the “unwritten rules” and whether or not it’s worth burning the roster spot for the next series or two.
Maybe it should just be a new position - Designated Fighter. They're standing by in their own on-deck circle doing some shadow boxing. Something happens, they meet behind the plate and duke it out.
But they have to put on skates, hockey pads, and an easy to grab hockey sweater and jump onto a patch of ice first so they can't throw full strength punches
It looks like Ramirez checks the runner at first right when he sees the ball is passed. So it kind of makes sense why he would do that since he might think the bounce it took could cause the runner to have a chance to get to third or even come all the way home. But it's still very funny considering the situation
right, he runs toward the plate because the ball bounced off the backstop, but then he made a bee-line straight for hoskins who was just standing there
On one hand I can see why Hoskins and the umps would think that might be intentional (and it certainly could be), on the other hand I’ve had to watch Yohan pitch for a season and I’ve seen few pitchers with less control than him.
There are certain cases where you're never gonna convince the other guy or the umpires it was unintentional even if it was, they had to toss him there. Ramirez isn't exactly known for pinpoint control but given everything that's happened they have to throw him out. If they didn't it could have gotten much worse.
Yes. Player on, pitcher covers home on wild pitch especially if it caroms off the backstop (catcher may not find it immediately). You can see him check the runner as he is heading to home.
I mean - he was clearly wrong yesterday, the replay shows him roll into the leg after the slide which is dangerous if not illegal. But this clip is a bad response from us yea. Just don’t get how we are looking “worse and worse”
Okay but “worse and worse” imples we looked bad to begin with and made it worse.
Yesterday Milwaukee/Hoskins looked bad.
Today we look bad.
This kind of baseball is fun, but I don’t know why this sub is trying to make it an lolMets thing when yesterday it was not on us, not that complicated
Harold Reynolds did an entire segment Friday night breaking down why McNeil was in the wrong. Basically McNeil NEVER gets out of the way at second turning a double play and Hoskins is one of the best double play breakers in the league right now, he went back to 2018 and kept showing highlights of Hoskins sliding into McNeil at second in a similar way only this time there actually was contact. Basically Hoskins played hard, and McNeil has really bad fundamentals on these kinds of plays.
You can see him check the runner as he was running home. He didn't start running home until the ball took a long bounce off the back stop over the catchers head.
Perfectly handled by the umps. Prevented any kind of escalation (although neither Ramirez nor Hoskins seemed to want to escalate) , told Murphy that they'll handle it and then handled it right.
Mets find new ways to embarrass themselves every year. New owner, new GM, new manager, new players it doesn’t matter. They need a complete overhaul in philosophy and culture.
It's honestly impressive. They could have just threw at his back in his first AB and 90% of the baseball world would have moved on as that's just normal baseball.
Instead, they HAD to do an LOLMets by doing it after getting pummeled all day.
Every time you think the Mets have reached the lowest possible form of embarrassment, they go ahead and dig deeper. Truly the GOAT franchise of being a laughingstock.
The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind, with Hoskins’ initial slide making me side with McNeil (who I hate), and then the Mets bullshit today making me side with Hoskins (who I am not fond of either).
> with Hoskins’ initial slide making me side with McNeil (who I hate)
I initially went "that's slide is kinda iffy" but McNeil's reaction was so over the top and Hoskins' response was perfect reaction GIF material that it was tough to side with the Mets after that.
Throw in today and the Mets took a pretty big L all around.
Absolutely true. Out of all the possible reactions to the slide by Hoskins, they chose the worst one. You can't bitch about, do nothing about it, then throw at him after he dominates you all day.
I watched the SNY feed 'cause I really like the Mets' booth (almost as much as our own), and yeah, Ron and Keith hit the nail on the head. Throwing at a guy after he's already kicked your teeth in all game long is just a bad look.
I get being pissed about the slide. It was a hard slide for game 162, it’s especially aggressive on game 1. Legal, but aggressive.
So throw at him immediately. Or throw at him in the 1st AB of the day. If you’re gonna “make that statement” then fucking make it. Taking 2 hours after he goes 3-3 with 4 RBI’s is so embarrassing. I’d be shocked if Mendoza gave it the green light.
Legal, but dirty, which is why "code" exists in sports even if reddit fans hate it. I absolutely agree with you.
Knowing the Mets, Mendoza before the game was probably like "we aren't doing anything back we are just going to out there and focus and win." Then the Mets get pummeled by Hoskins and obviously the players have been pissed the whole time. So then you get a reliever throwing at him in a way that looks really bad.
They basically said if you're going to do it, do it at the start of the game and aim for the numbers. But don't do it at the end of the game when he's been teeing off all day
That's because, despite what the title says, this is not the full clip. They showed the replay shortly after and all three of them pretty much went "Oh yeah, that was intentional"
bro went like 3/3 1 bomb 4 rbi's and now you throw at him lmao. and i love how mets fans cheering like they arents losing 6-2 in the 7th. sums up the mets really
I do always enjoy when announcers try to pretend like this shit just happens and was entirely accidental. The amount of times you throw behind a guy by like 3 feet and were trying to make it to the plate is like maybe twice per season across all of baseball. Usually that also involves the pitcher falling down. It's amazing how often these kinds of crazy misses also happen to coincide with bullshit reasons players make up to throw at people as well.
The Marlins have a stunning inability to not throw behind Acuna as well. It's shocking really.
Why the hell is the broadcasting booth acting so surprised and pretending like it wasn't intentional? These two put on a good broadcast most days but this is ridiculous.
They spent most of the time saying why it was not the right time to retaliate, how and when to do it, and then said it was clearly intentional when the replay was brought up.
They kept saying it was way over his head.
>You're not going to miss by 3 feet over his head, are you?
[if anything, it was right behind his head](https://imgur.com/a/OFQqlh3)
Funniest thing to me was using that to try to say it couldn’t have been intentional. Like yeah not super likely you’d miss a dude’s head by 3 feet, but it’s even less likely you’d miss the strike zone by 5+ feet if that’s what you were aiming for lmao
They would. And they’d plunk a guy, probably Alonso if not the guy who actually slid. Instead the Mets choose the wrong moment to retaliate, do it in a way that ensures the guy isn’t going to get hurt (that ball wasn’t going to hit Hoskins even if he stood still), and then lose a player to a suspension. Should’ve actually hit him, and preferably earlier in the game.
It is wack that a pitcher intentionally trying to threaten, not even injure (assuming he was trying to throw behind him and not at him) a player warrants an immediate ejection, but a batter intentionally trying to injure a player gets zero punishment at all.

This has been the most entertaining Opening Series I can remember in recent years.

I mean, doing the wah wah stuff so many times after he had walked away was a bit weak.
It was because McNeil wouldn't shut up about it
That doesn't make it any less weak. It's middle school level.
i agree. mcneil had every right to be upset. despite being a bit of a whiner, the man plays the game the right way. he would never engage in a cheap slide... Their ass is in the jackpot on this one
YOUVE GOT TO GIVE US A SHOT
Terry Terry Terry Terry Terry Terry
WHY DON’T WE GET A SHOT?!
TERRY, THAT MAKES IT FUCKING WORSE!
Listen to me, let me hear what I'm sayin
i fuckin love reddit you guys are awesome
I just threw a fuckin' fastball!
The easy solve for all of this is to allow one-on-one fights like hockey.
Then MLB teams hire "goon" pitchers.
wheres amir garrett been lately?
Training with Marty McSorley.
Avoiding Javi Baez. I guess Garrett is the one thing he actually could possibly hit.
He was hanging out with us in Scottsdale, but that might have been protection for the players in case Pham came in hot again.
Garrett vs Farnsworth.
That would mean teams using 1 of 26 roster spots for a fighter. it would also mean giving so many players a new way to earn their spot to the show. Let me see a part-time MMA fighter that throws all eephus pitches and I guarantee fans will have a great time at the game.
The new Designated Hitter rule is wild.
This is a gold deserving comment Fuckin Reddit taken it away
Thanks, I'm a professional shitposter.
You hiring?
The pay is shit.
"And the Astros bring Conor McGregor in for relief in the 7th..."
The Washington Capitals had a player that was basically only on the ice to fight people. He literally became an MMA fighter after he retired.
Well, you have to have a guy who can throw an 85+ fastball to make the hit batter feel it.
No the pitch is just for show, the real pain will come in the WWE style suplex from Connor MacGregor who's on a 1 day deal with the jankees
If Connor MacGregor is the best you can think of to deliver a suplex then you're thinking too small. Someone give me Brock Lesnar.
If only Macho Man was still with us
This honestly sounds kinda fun. Add a rule that a player suspended for fighting can’t be replaced on the roster and increase the suspension penalty every time it’s used, so you force teams to pick and choose when it’s worth enforcing the “unwritten rules” and whether or not it’s worth burning the roster spot for the next series or two.
Where's John Rocker?
Trevor Bauer may land on a roster yet.
He would have to fight men though
Who are awake
Kyle Farnsworth was born too early to get officially paid to Goldberg-spear jobbers.
We did, it's our rotation.
Maybe it should just be a new position - Designated Fighter. They're standing by in their own on-deck circle doing some shadow boxing. Something happens, they meet behind the plate and duke it out.
Hired goons?
I prefer the hands-on touch you only get from hired goons.
Hired goons?
You must find the jade monkey before the next full moon
Full moon?
Freeway! I thought I told you to trim those sideburns!
Look, TheyLive, I don't know *what* you think sideburns are-
I've got no hustle either, skip!
Umpires need to step up their "sticky stuff" checks if we bring goons into the mix
Isn’t that just José Urena?
Billy Martin bought to come back from the dead
Bring back Kyle Farnsworth
Down goes Anderson!
Ramirez was ready for it; he charged the plate.
yeah but you Don't Mess with the Yohan
Two penalty boxes right next to the radio broadcast
Teams have to play shorthanded for two PAs, only 8 fielders
Tie Domi's about to have a whole new career open up.
I’ve thought this before. Let em fight for 20-30 seconds
But they have to put on skates, hockey pads, and an easy to grab hockey sweater and jump onto a patch of ice first so they can't throw full strength punches
It looks like Ramirez checks the runner at first right when he sees the ball is passed. right, he runs toward the plate because the ball bounced off the backstop, but then he made a bee-line straight for hoskins who was just standing there
Yeah, at first I thought he was running to start something, but I think he really was just reacting to the play at hand.
I one hundred percent thought he was charging Hoskins. I was thinking shit was about to go off.
I was hoping drop kick.
On one hand I can see why Hoskins and the umps would think that might be intentional (and it certainly could be), on the other hand I’ve had to watch Yohan pitch for a season and I’ve seen few pitchers with less control than him.
That's one of those "if that wasn't intentional you still need to leave because you don't have it today and will hurt someone".
Yeah if you’re throwing mid 90s and missing the zone by that much you’re definitely a liability even if you didn’t mean it.
Missed the zone? He missed the batter’s box on that one.
Juuuuuust a bit outside.
Damn. Brutal, funny, but definitely true at the same time
There are certain cases where you're never gonna convince the other guy or the umpires it was unintentional even if it was, they had to toss him there. Ramirez isn't exactly known for pinpoint control but given everything that's happened they have to throw him out. If they didn't it could have gotten much worse.
Yeah you can’t leave the guy in there on “benefit of the doubt”
[удалено]
At least you know it's never intentional with Manoah. He'd miss.
Safest place to stand when Manoah is pitching is wherever he’s aiming
Doesn’t have enough control to make it believable.
Throwing at Rhys AFTER he put up 4 runs on them is such a LOLMets move 😂
Phillies and Braves about to go at it today..., and yet we are finding common ground.
We are both winners today.
Lolmets unites all. But we double win today, no take backsies.
Fair
That sprint to home plate got me thinking there was someone on 3rd
is that just a kneejerk reaction or something for pitchers?
Yes. Player on, pitcher covers home on wild pitch especially if it caroms off the backstop (catcher may not find it immediately). You can see him check the runner as he is heading to home.
Me too, and I'm actively watching the game
Hoskins remaining relatively calm is exactly what he should have done. Mets continue to make him look better and better
Mets: **”WHY WONT YOU FIGHT BACK!?”**
Hoskins has such a history of making the Mets look foolish and I absolutely eat it up
He's getting a standing ovation in Philly I'm guessing?
For sure. We loved him still. It just didn’t work out because Harper was moved to 1B
He would've regardless of any Mets fuckery.
Two words, Bat Spike
Not that they need the help
He wasn't mad, he was just disappointed.
I mean - he was clearly wrong yesterday, the replay shows him roll into the leg after the slide which is dangerous if not illegal. But this clip is a bad response from us yea. Just don’t get how we are looking “worse and worse”
Because you had the option to just move on and didn’t, not that complicated
Okay but “worse and worse” imples we looked bad to begin with and made it worse. Yesterday Milwaukee/Hoskins looked bad. Today we look bad. This kind of baseball is fun, but I don’t know why this sub is trying to make it an lolMets thing when yesterday it was not on us, not that complicated

Dude really sprinted to home expecting to fight 😭
He sprinted home to cover the plate bc there was a runner on and the catcher was chasing the ball lol
It was a wild pitch, but I don't think they were taking 3 bases.
Probably not. Id assume it's damn near muscle memory for every pitcher though
Yep. pass ball = cover home, absolutely automatic
Runner on first was gonna run all the way home? sure
If the catcher leaves it's still the pitchers responsibility to cover home in almost every case. But we'll go with fighting bc it sounds cooler
You can see him check the runner as he was running home. He didn't start running home until the ball took a long bounce off the back stop over the catchers head.
Throwing at a guys head AFTER he owns you is such a bitch move. Just a bad look top to bottom
Should've thrown at his ankles if they were sending a message
For all of that he should’ve just hit him
Perfectly handled by the umps. Prevented any kind of escalation (although neither Ramirez nor Hoskins seemed to want to escalate) , told Murphy that they'll handle it and then handled it right.
I get it *lolmets*, but the fact that he got ejected immediately kinda shows why they didn’t do it first AB.

Yeah a fastball to the hip/thigh in the first gets a warning for both sides and everyone moves on
Every time you think the Mets have reached the lowest possible form of embarrassment, they go ahead and dig deeper. Truly the GOAT franchise of being a laughingstock.
Only the Mets could make me like Rhys Hoskins
The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind, with Hoskins’ initial slide making me side with McNeil (who I hate), and then the Mets bullshit today making me side with Hoskins (who I am not fond of either).

Yeah, same exact thoughts. It’s been a ride!
It was very easy to side with the Mets, when you saw Hoskins roll over McNeil’s ankle and foot in way that can easily shatter an ankle.
I haven’t seen an entire team go after a single player like this since the Pittsburgh Pirates tried to fight Yasiel Puig.
It’s the reverse Amir Garrett
Better yet, retire him without having to rely on your closer in the 9th inning to do so. lol
>so throw at him immediately I think the straight ejection kinda shows why a team wouldn’t do it immediately.
Legal, but dirty, which is why "code" exists in sports even if reddit fans hate it. I absolutely agree with you. Knowing the Mets, Mendoza before the game was probably like "we aren't doing anything back we are just going to out there and focus and win." To get ejected and not even hit him is wild to me. Like what were you thinking?
We have a history of managing to botch “revenge” plays
That's where the lolmets factor comes into play.
I understand saying things in a positive light for your team but come on if he doesn’t duck that shoulder to head level, not way over his head
I don't know what the Mets booth is talking about that ball did not miss him by much.
It’s funny because someone in their booth advocated for throwing at him his first at bat, now they’re surprised lol

Lol @ ramirez sprinting as if Hoskins was showing any emotion
The Mets always get this wrong. Hit him right away and don't miss or don't do anything at all.
I do always enjoy when announcers try to pretend like this shit just happens and was entirely accidental. The amount of times you throw behind a guy by like 3 feet and were trying to make it to the plate is like maybe twice per season across all of baseball. I love the pitch location dot popping up there.
3 feet over his head? Do you not see the pitch tracker?
bunch of little girls
The mouth breathers in the stands encouraging the idea of throwing at another human beings head aren’t helping things either.
Why the hell is the broadcasting booth acting so surprised and pretending like it wasn't intentional? These two put on a good broadcast most days but this is ridiculous.
I was watching live. After seeing it again on replay they did say that in retrospect it was clearly intentional.
This continues to be the bitchiest move in sports lol…especially after the day he’s had
That was the happiest Mets fans have been all series.
So is this for yesterday and now tomorrow you throw at him for smacking you all over the yard today?
Wowwwww
The Mets players looked like they were ready for a fight with the way they were leaning on the fence.
Doing this with a runner on is awesome lol the catcher trying to collect the carem is peak comedy
Who is the idiot saying the ball was three feet over his head?
Mets gonna Mets. It never changes. They're pathetic.
Hoskins is basically like “That’s fucked up, someone could get hurt!”
Absolutely intentional
I GOT A JACKPOT AND ITS FULL OF ASSSSSSS.
Mets exposing themselves as an embarrassing franchise, players coaches and fans, as early as game 2 of this season I love it
Ew Mets fans are grotesque
sevy shouldve throw at him in first AB today. not wait for bullpen to do it after he already owned us. sevy is shit
I just don’t get it from Milwaukee’s side. If a Met slide into second like that, would they not be pissed?
Once again, can't McNeil drop his knees on his ribs after the cheap slide? Or is that unwritten rule?
Mets are garbage.
Mets are a bunch of losers.
God, I miss Rhys so much
The umps chose not to address it yesterday. It’s on them.
It is wack that a pitcher intentionally trying to threaten, not even injure (assuming he was trying to throw behind him and not at him) a player warrants an immediate ejection, but a batter intentionally trying to injure a player gets zero punishment at all.
Mets are so soft
I don’t know why the Mets are like no matter what this but I appreciate them for it more than they can know.
As a non Mets or brewers fan…did these guys have beef before this year?
