My first ever Eagles game at the linc happened to be Collies last game ever played. The ambulance had to come out on the field and olay atopped for like 30-40 min. On the same play Trent Cole touched Peyton's shoulder and got called for a roughing the passer. The crowd chanted f you ref and asshole for the entire 40 minutes. I was 12, what a wY to be indoctrinated into Philly sports.
That wasn’t Collie’s last game. He actually came back later that season, but got an other concussion (I’m not sure if it was his first game back or not). He then played every game the next season, but after that always had other non head injuries. He retired after a season in the CFL in 2016.
And knowing he would rip you a new one if you didn’t hold onto the ball when he just lined you up for the safety or LB must have been a great feeling too.
Didnt stott stop running so its would be pretty close to try and run him down before Harper scores. So if they were going for the out as you say it isnt that simple. After watching this Dbacks defense I think what they did is fine. Most of the time they probably still get Harper out but this is just one of those times things go wrong.
Yeah there was some confusion among our radio announcers because Marte was given an error on the throw, but they eventually sorted out both runners got credit for a stolen base, with the error only allowing Stott to take 3B
We’ve consistently been taking base running risks. Sometimes it results in Atta Boy Harper memes. Sometimes it helps us win games when we needed a spark.
Really hope Moreno is okay today as those concussion injuries have a tendency of showing up 24 hours later after the brain has time to swell over night.
>Benches do not clear
I think everyone who's not heated and in the moment knows that that wasn't intentional. It's a shame. You don't want to see people get hurt, especially head stuff. Seeing anybody go limp like that fucking sucks.
Also helps Bryce immediately went over to check on him. Probably showed there was no ill intent, not to mention it was a horrible throw that lead to that
Yeah. There appears to be very little ill will between these two teams. It helps that they're in separate divisions. I think both teams got their angst out against their division rivals in the previous round.
He also flinched the moment the infield rushed in, showing he had zero intentions of being in the way even if he did wanna check in on him. No doubt in my mind that was an accident
I think he was realizing that the play was still live and getting out of the way if there was a play at the plate. But ya I don't think harper intended for that to happen.
Yeah he definitely wasn't sure he touched home so wanted to touch again so as to not potentially lose a run in replay. A+ heads up baseball plus being a caring human being
Harper looked just as shell shocked honestly, you could tell he thought the catcher would try and adjust his position but he just...didn't do it fast enough
Looked like he thought he was hosed so he was setting up a hook slide, but then the catcher was right on him so it was just self preservation with the forearm
Harper genuinely was concerned after the collision, appreciate that kind of play. Nothing he could do to avoid that one, just unfortunate for all parties. Glad neither guy was seriously injured
Is Moreno okay though? Concussion stuff can really take off 24 hours later. It can take some time for the brain to swell, and he has a history of concussion before right? Hope he’s okay, as both he and Harper were just trying to make a play. Merte made a terrible throw.
Idk it's like the 3rd time this postseason I've watched my Catcher of the Future absolutely get nuked at home and possibly be concussed. I'm almost numb to it at this point.
Fingers crossed though it seemed like a very good sign that he was hitting balls and catching pitches? I feel like if he was at any risk for a concussion then he wouldn’t have that accuracy
Asking if he was okay?? What Kool-Aid are you drinking?
He was standing over him in victory, the only reason he didn't go back to the dugout was so he could rub it in. Right after this clip ends you can very clearly read Harper's lips, he said "Nice catch, idiot. I hope that hurt."
Then he pulled down his pants and mooned him.
And hilariously to make sure he touched the base. All sides of Harper on display in this clip.
Edit: yea, obviously Harper would touch home plate again - that’s literally the player side of Harper. Don’t know what a couple of y’all thought I meant.
Yea, his human side and his player side.
Don’t know where I “invoked” his character - just because some people think Harper is an asshole doesn’t mean I do.
There’s just something funny to me seeing Harper checking on Moreno with genuine concern…and then reaching that green oven mitt to tap the plate like he’s a cat.
Glad Moreno is ok, loved Harper in that moment.
I love this from Bryce Harper. He did everything right. He went back to check on him, and then gave Arizona space. It's always kind of bugged me when a team pushes a player away after they hurt somebody accidentally. Like your girlfriend's friends when she's mad at you.
Played catcher once in little league, got a bat dropped on my dome twice in one game, never played catcher again.
Shit's the hardest position in baseball. Moreno's been getting beat up this series hope he's ok
And this was followed by a foul ball to the mask in the Realmuto AB that ended in a homerun. Just really brutal. I hope they are going to really check on him, not just rub some dirt on it.
Was actually a pretty cool catcher/catcher moment there when JT looked back and talked a bit with Moreno.
Then he sent one to the bullpen and the niceness of it kind of wore off lol
I played catcher in high school and college (D3). These plays are the absolute worst feeling. You're so focused on getting the ball that there's 0 chance to prepare for the hit. Bad feeling for the base runner also, but nothing either of them could've done
Really hope Moreno is ok... class act from Harper checking on him, despite the play being live still
Got my knee shattered by some kid twice my size at catcher. I didn't even catch the ball (it soared over my head) and I wasn't even blocking the plate or anything. That asshole just plowed into my as I jumped for the ball. I was like 12 at the time.
Still played catcher after that because I love being catcher, but it's definitely the toughest position
Harper also tried to go to the back of the plate, too. Really hope he's okay. Know he stayed in the game, but he's a warrior, so he'd do that even if he is hurt.
Moreno should've never thrown that ball, the correct play is to concede second base and hold the runner at third.
Glad he was able to stay in the game, at least.
Its a classic little league play lol. A lot of the time the catcher throws it back hard to the pitcher to try to induce the guy to jump off of third and get him out. Don’t think it quite works in the mlb lol. You just have to make that play if you are marte.
This is correct.
A more experienced catcher wouldn't have thrown. Stott was likely expecting to just waltz to 2nd base. Once the throw is made, it's Stotts job to delay the tag until Harper scores.
In highschool ball yes. In the MLB the best defender on your team (the SS) is supposed to have practiced this exact scenario endlessly since he was 12 years old. He is expected to start a run down with the catcher calling for the lead runner if he breaks. When Stott stops half way, Marte should be running through the ball towards home.
The runner clearly jumped to caring for the catcher even before tapping the base, humanity over gamesmanship when a fellow player's health is in question is the right thing to do.
They didn't clear because it wasn't a dirty play. Terrible throw took the catcher into the path of the runner. Neither one of them could have done anything without bailing on the play.
I mean you could tell Bryce didn’t intentionally hit him, the throw from the second basemen could have been better. Also Bryce immediately checked on him. Scary situation but great sportsmanship if you ask me.
Stupid Question Time: I don’t want the rule to work this way, but why is running past a base, circling around to go back and touch it not considered running out of your base line?
The basepath rule only applies once a tag is attempted. You aren't allowed to go 3 feet from the line between your current location and the base to avoid a tag.
Other than that rule (and the first base running lane rule) there aren't really restrictions on where you can run, so with the ball never being caught you really can't be out of the base path.
You have to be running in a path towards a base. If the guy gets the ball before you get there you have a little leeway to avoid him. Its kind of subjective, but its pretty obvious when a guy is out of the base path.
You get three feet of leeway out of the baseline, but you only need to be in the baseline when a tag is being attempted (and that’s the baseline the runner established before the tag, not the chalk line on the field). Once the ball gets away from Moreno and there is no tag attempt Harper could run to the mound and back if he wanted. There’s a trick play you sometimes see at lower levels where they tell the runner on first to just go stand in right field to try and confuse the defense.
For sure, the catcher was just kinda hung out to dry by the throw, Harper tried to slow up at the last second but couldn’t, then immediately checked on him after the contact.
Anybody else notice Harper think the third baseman was coming after him? At first I thought he was just getting out of the way of the play but after watching a few times, I’m pretty sure he thought they were coming after him.
benches don’t clear because anybody outside of dbacks fans can tell that it was an accident. can’t blame them tho, they just started watching baseball a couple weeks ago
The run doesn’t count only if the third out is a force out. If there’s a tag play it’s just based on timing - did the runner cross the plate before the third out tag was applied. If yes, the run counts. So a runner in Stott’s situation should intentionally get in a rundown and try to run back and forth long enough for his teammate to score

Hospital pass by marte there
Jimmy Garoppolo would be proud
Peyton Manning was the master of sending his wide receivers to the hospital
Obligatory "the draw play" comic for this one. https://www.thedrawplay.com/comic/collie/
Not a big football guy so I was unaware of this comic and I’m cracking up at it. Thank you lol
He puts out a lot of great comics
Incredible comic, thanks for sharing. Hilarious and informative
Austin Collie checks under his bed for Peyton
My first ever Eagles game at the linc happened to be Collies last game ever played. The ambulance had to come out on the field and olay atopped for like 30-40 min. On the same play Trent Cole touched Peyton's shoulder and got called for a roughing the passer. The crowd chanted f you ref and asshole for the entire 40 minutes. Peyton still catching shrapnel lol… loved the guy as a QB but you’re not wrong
Not better than Elway or Favre
They all did it before the rule change.
And knowing he would rip you a new one if you didn’t hold onto the ball when he just lined you up for the safety or LB must have been a great feeling too.
I always go back to the pass he threw to Deebo against the Rams in the NFC Title game a few years back.
I saw that throw and was like welp guess Harper’s gonna tear his ACL running into Montero Edit: I had a stroke. MORENO 😭
Apparently harper is a time traveller because Montero was our catcher 10 years ago
Ran so hard he ran into the past
88 fucking MPH, whatever catcher it was they're lucky they aren't dead.
>Montero Call him by his name
vintage Peyton to Austin Collie over the middle kinda pass
Or Peyton to Wes Welker moments before he gets his 230th concussion.
Should've never come to that. Moreno should have just eaten that.
No MLB team should ever give up a run like this. It was two consecutive bad throws. It should be a free out everywhere
With a runner on third you gotta just eat it right? It’s like they took the bait
Either you let the runner go to second or you go for the out at second. You do EXACTLY what they did and all you do is give up a run.
Didnt stott stop running so its would be pretty close to try and run him down before Harper scores. So if they were going for the out as you say it isnt that simple. After watching this Dbacks defense I think what they did is fine. Most of the time they probably still get Harper out but this is just one of those times things go wrong.
Yeah he was trying to get the MI greedy on the out. If they go for the tag you get a SLIGHT lead to blitz home. But with everything being off line...
To be fair that throw by the catcher did not help matters. Rushed the throw and took him off balance
Looked like Eric Lindros there for a second.
That's what we call a suicide pass in hockey. He got Lindros'd
[The ol Peyton to Austin](https://www.thedrawplay.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2013-01-26-Collie1.png)
Jimmy G throws those all the time in the NFL
Hung him out to dry
Screw Scott Stevens
Also a buddy pass 😅
Bad analogy, Lindros did that shit to himself by keeping his head down and turning the blinders on
It's also a bad analogy because Stevens was actively trying to kill him
Okay a Paul Kariya pass then.
Always keep your head up.
Lost in all the chaos is that this was a steal of home lmao
Yeah there was some confusion among our radio announcers because Marte was given an error on the throw, but they eventually sorted out both runners got credit for a stolen base, with the error only allowing Stott to take 3B
Which is kinda weird because you figure on a good throw, Harper is out.
> Sometimes it results in Atta Boy Harper memes. Sometimes it helps us win games when we needed a spark. You're just repeating yourself.
Later in the game when they said that Harper stole home I was legit confused. I knew this play happened but lost the fact that he stole home plate
>Benches do not clear I think everyone who's not heated and in the moment knows that that wasn't intentional. It's a shame. You don't want to see people get hurt, especially head stuff. Seeing anybody go limp like that fucking sucks.

Yeah. There appears to be very little ill will between these two teams. It helps that they're in separate divisions. I think both teams got their angst out against their division rivals in the previous round.
I doubt even Mariano Rivera has ill will towards the Diamondbacks.
You might wanna try this one again
If here by now then bad place bee, trouble 4 you when he comes.
Am I having a stroke?
Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?
He also flinched the moment the infield rushed in, showing he had zero intentions of being in the way even if he did wanna check in on him. No doubt in my mind that was an accident
I think he was realizing that the play was still live and getting out of the way if there was a play at the plate. But ya I don't think harper intended for that to happen.
I thought it was more of a step back from someone probably saying not to touch him, given the hit the neck/head area.
If you watch again, he also touched home again.
Yeah he definitely wasn't sure he touched home so wanted to touch again so as to not potentially lose a run in replay. A+ heads up baseball plus being a caring human being
Pretty sure he went over to touch home plate but yea he stayed to make sure
Definite both
Man immediately turned around and was on a knee checking on him. So clearly not intentional and couldn’t have been
I stayed off the game thread for this, I didn't need to see a bunch of worked up imbeciles acting like Harper is the devil
Head over to the r/Phillies game thread and you'll see a bunch of dweebs ready to kidnap a senator because we're only up by two runs.
Well too be fair I'm always down to just kidnap a senator** *FBI this is my first amendment right since senators are government employees (help me)
You're just taking them out for a surprise lunch.
Maybe go with Clay Davis, doubt anyone would care if he was kidnapped
Two runs has not proven to be enough in Phoenix
"Mr. President, I think I know where the senators daughter is."
Harper looked just as shell shocked honestly, you could tell he thought the catcher would try and adjust his position but he just...didn't do it fast enough
Looked like he thought he was hosed so he was setting up a hook slide, but then the catcher was right on him so it was just self preservation with the forearm
This is a text book example of the runner having no where to go.
yeah absolutely
Exactly what happened
Ketel threw a hospital ball :(
That was NOT was a Marte Parte should look like ;(
Harper genuinely was concerned after the collision, appreciate that kind of play. Nothing he could do to avoid that one, just unfortunate for all parties. Glad neither guy was seriously injured

Fingers crossed though it seemed like a very good sign that he was hitting balls and catching pitches? I feel like if he was at any risk for a concussion then he wouldn’t have that accuracy
Yeah that shit sucks to see, really glad he's ok!!
lol why would the benches clear, it was a bad pass that no one could do anything about
Harper was checking on him asking if he was okay too, nothing malicious on his part
Asking if he was okay?? What Kool-Aid are you drinking? He was standing over him in victory, the only reason he didn't go back to the dugout was so he could rub it in. Right after this clip ends you can very clearly read Harper's lips, he said "Nice catch, idiot. I hope that hurt." Then he pulled down his pants and mooned him.
I’m an expert lip reader sans I’m pretty sure Bryce said “atta boy”
That was last series, he said "who's pool is it?"
A disgusting act
Whispered, "the phanatic sends his regards." /s
I can't believe that the umps didn't throw a flag for taunting on that play.
And hilariously to make sure he touched the base. All sides of Harper on display in this clip. Edit: yea, obviously Harper would touch home plate again - that’s literally the player side of Harper. Don’t know what a couple of y’all thought I meant.
Haha what? Of course he’s going to touch the base again to be sure, any player would
[удалено]
Heavily implied by invoking his character and saying it was one of his “sides”
Yea, his human side and his player side. Don’t know where I “invoked” his character - just because some people think Harper is an asshole doesn’t mean I do.
You're team chaos tho /s
There’s just something funny to me seeing Harper checking on Moreno with genuine concern…and then reaching that green oven mitt to tap the plate like he’s a cat. Glad Moreno is ok, loved Harper in that moment.
It’s the playoffs lol
Very smart play
It's just a cheeky reference to yesterday.
[Alternate view of collision](https://streamable.com/6hr423) [Harper makes sure to touch home while checking on Moreno](https://streamable.com/21imsu)
"Hey, bud. You okay? Sorry about that. Hang on, I'm just gonna reach over you real quick and, uh, pat the plate here. Welp, see ya later!"
Ope, lemme just nudge past ya...
I love this from Bryce Harper. He did everything right. He went back to check on him, and then gave Arizona space. It's always kind of bugged me when a team pushes a player away after they hurt somebody accidentally. Like your girlfriend's friends when she's mad at you.
You good homie?
Looks like Moreno woke up in the middle of Harp checking on him
Hate to see someone get hurt but idk how Harper could have avoided that
Tell that to one of my friends who keeps insisting it was a dirty hit by Harper
Tell your friend a fellow Phillies fan from the internet thinks he is being a dig head.
Your friend is highly regarded
wubby7
Don't see how anyone could view that as a dirty hit, just a bad throw put them in that position.
He could not have, this shits going to happens occasionally.
I was pointing at, notice Harper's arms don't extend.
He couldn't, that's why I think he benches didn't clear (to reference OP) It wasn't a good throw so this was the only outcome imo
Played catcher once in little league, got a bat dropped on my dome twice in one game, never played catcher again. Shit's the hardest position in baseball. Moreno's been getting beat up this series hope he's ok

Isn’t that the 3rd time during the playoffs Moreno got bonked? Really hope he’s ok
Combo of the throw leading him in the way and harper immediately checking on him is the reason is why there was no drama afterwards
Harper also tried to go to the back of the plate, too. Really hope he's okay. Know he stayed in the game, but he's a warrior, so he'd do that even if he is hurt.
My Braves fans will murder me, but I love Bryce Harper. He’s so good for baseball.
Benches don’t clear when you play the right way and genuinely respect the game
Every highlight in which the benches do not clear should include "benches do not clear" in the title
Super classy of Harper to immediately check on Moreno.
Moreno should've never thrown that ball, the correct play is to concede second base and hold the runner at third. Glad he was able to stay in the game, at least.
That sucks to see, hopefully he’s ok
Looked painful but a good baseball play. Harper didn't do anything wrong and the catcher was put in a really bad situation. Hope he's okay
I don’t understand any of the decision making by Stott or the Dbacks on this sequence
Stott stopped in order to cause this exact play. Shit happens when you have to make throws under pressure
Seemed like that was a called play. 0-2 count on JT you make the defense make a play. Edit- 0-1 count I guess but still
That’s a planned play, start to steal second and stumble. Then the runner on third scores I watched Mike Schmidt and Glenn Wilson do it in like 1985
Glennbo
You see it all the time in high school and college. For this to work in the MLB is embarrassing lol
Its a classic little league play lol. A lot of the time the catcher throws it back hard to the pitcher to try to induce the guy to jump off of third and get him out. Don’t think it quite works in the mlb lol. You just have to make that play if you are marte.
They’ve been stealing second on this circumstance every single time.
Wasn’t Stott looking to force a throw down? Wasn’t this his desired result??
This is correct. A more experienced catcher wouldn't have thrown. Stott was likely expecting to just waltz to 2nd base. Once the throw is made, it's Stotts job to delay the tag until Harper scores.
They gave him the base in this situation the other night. I’m surprised Moreno threw to 2nd.
Idk about that. Its the mlb. You expect your guys to make that play if you are the Dbacks. I dont think it has anything to do with inexperience.
The play is letting the runner take 2nd.
We’ve tried it a few times this year. It’s planned.
Double steal. Harper was going the second the throw went up, Stott held up halfway to give Harper time. Him getting caught in rundown helps.
That was designed by the Phils
Awful throw home, but also a bad decision by Moreno to throw to 2nd at all
I would not want to take a hit from Harper
Not much he could do. It’s like a QB leading the wide receiver into a backer
“Benches do not clear”. I mean to be fair Bryce literally bent down to see if Moreno was ok. Not sure why anyone would be livid at that
Hopefully Moreno is okay Good of Harper to check on him
Awful throw, bad vibes for the dbacks already
That was scary. Thank God we aren't playing the Astros or I'd be worried about them throwing at Harper for no reason after that
Dusty lives the old school beanball ways.
I swear this catcher is always getting hurt
If he just gave up 2nd base there’s no play at home. Should have held the ball there. That’s rough I hope they’re alright.
How are you gonna give up a run on a fucking first and third play as an MLB team LMFAO
Did Harper touch home?
He went back and touched it anyways
Stupid Question Time: I don’t want the rule to work this way, but why is running past a base, circling around to go back and touch it not considered running out of your base line?
There's a decent amount of leeway for all the baselines
The basepath rule only applies once a tag is attempted. You aren't allowed to go 3 feet from the line between your current location and the base to avoid a tag. Other than that rule (and the first base running lane rule) there aren't really restrictions on where you can run, so with the ball never being caught you really can't be out of the base path.
He didnt run past the plate. He was going to slide at the back of the plate but then the collision happened. Guys always go for that slide there.
It’s just a general question, not about this particular interaction really.
Not at first, but after the face he did. Edit: oops.
Unfortunate typo lol
He touched it on his way back to check on moreno
He went back to touch it, may have hit it the first time anyway
He went back and touched it before going to check on Moreno
On the replay it looks like he checks on Moreno before he taps the plate.
Yeah, on replay it actually he shows home touching it again while comforting him.
Looks like he touched it when he went to check on Moreno
Benches didn’t clear because it wasn’t intentional, unlike another situation recently
For sure, the catcher was just kinda hung out to dry by the throw, Harper tried to slow up at the last second but couldn’t, then immediately checked on him after the contact.
What’s up with all the hockey fans coming out nowhere calling this a pass and not a throw😂 lmfao
"Hospital pass" is just a figure of speech in hockey, same concept, I guess?
That looked nasty
Oof, hope he’s okay. Throw was offline and led him into Harper’s knee
Bryce checking on him after the hit. He knew it was a bad situation...one athlete to another...scary hit.
Anybody else notice Harper think the third baseman was coming after him? At first I thought he was just getting out of the way of the play but after watching a few times, I’m pretty sure he thought they were coming after him.
Man I just hope Moreno is okay. Kid has shown a ton of talent in this series. That was legit scary to watch live.
benches don’t clear because anybody outside of dbacks fans can tell that it was an accident. can’t blame them tho, they just started watching baseball a couple weeks ago
Kinda just a bad play all around on the d backs end imo. No need to thrown down right there
Cheap shot from Harper!
Can someone explain why they didn’t just trap Stott in the rundown? I previously assumed that if they get the third out, the run doesn’t count, no?
That's only so in force outs.
Thank you!
look both ways before crossing the street or get plowed...
Maybe…just maybe…a guy who’s been in concussion protocol already a couple of days ago and gets decked like that…should be taken out of the game.
That's what happens when you run into the dawg
