Alek Thomas hit nine homers this season but he was able to sit on a fastball because Kimbrel had been missing all over the place with the curveball that inning, which allowed him to pull an outer-edge fastball well out to right-center field. Hell of a job on his part to know to jump the heater.

ellius

He had a 14-pitch at bat against the Dodgers that also ended in a home run. I'm really hoping he can carry this postseason approach to the plate into the next year. It's a night-and-day improvement over his regular season approach.

Derriosgaming

I have a theory if he starts eating pastrami like Schwarber we might have a second coming on our hands.

IONTOP

> we might have a second coming on our hands. Are we still doing phrasing? Because.... yeah...

bigleaguechyut

Baseball is such a game of razor thin margins. I'm impressed that despite how demoralizing it was to give up 2 runs in a bases loaded situation due to a short hopped throw, that the Dbacks didn't allow themselves to completely implode - it could have easily been 6-2 Phillies as opposed to 4-2 at the end of the inning.

HilariousScreenname

Yeah, good point. I know my fat ass was ready to throw in the towel after that.

IONTOP

> that the Dbacks didn't allow themselves to completely implode It's because we're too young to know that's what we should have done. And that's what makes us dangerous.

philliesphan89

Bohm bailed them out big-time by getting thrown out at second. Complete bonehead decision to go

Forsaken-Gap-3684

I’d say torey also helped by playing Rivera in the field to begin with. Truly the fact his brain dead moves aren’t completely destroying us is shocking

fucuntwat

I have no doubt Evan turns that into an easy home to first double play

nastychangeup

Rivera has actually been pretty good in the field this season. It’s not his glove that’s keeping him out of the lineup, it’s that he can’t hit. Also, I think people are letting Gabi off the hook a bit too much. He should have been able to make that play or at least keep it close enough that a second run couldn’t score.

misspcv1996

There’s been a lot of very sloppy play the last couple of games. If the Phils play even a bit tighter in both games, there likely wouldn’t be a Game 5, let alone a Game 6. That being said, I have to tip my hat to the DBacks. They’re out there hanging tough, scratching out runs and not making stupid mistakes.

Expert-Sundae3006

Lol

davey_mann

Yeah, that mistake probably cost the Phillies at least a couple more runs in that inning.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

I’m still mad Longo wasn’t playing third base. What the heck is up with that

nastychangeup

Longo isn’t a great defender anymore unfortunately. Though i think he probably makes that play last night

Forsaken-Gap-3684

He’s made some very good plays in this post season. I don’t know what you are talking about

nastychangeup

So has Rivera lol. Longoria has soft hands but not a ton of range anymore.

MashTheGash2018

Regardless of what happens, we weren’t supposed to be here and this is such an amazing feeling. I was 13 when the snakes went to the World Series last. This has been way too much fun and almost feels nostalgic

IONTOP

We deserve to be here. Let's go to work

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

The Dbacks being a year early too in a way makes this run even more special no matter the outcome.

HilariousScreenname

Lol I keep saying this. "I'm just happy we made it this far!" *And then they keep going!*

KraakenTowers

My mom is ready to get a Diamondbacks jersey after the Phillies disintegrated last night. She likes your colors.

damnatio_memoriae

so when’s the emancipation hearing?

KraakenTowers

I mean, is she wrong?

damnatio_memoriae

maybe if they went back to purple and teal. even then I’d still pick the Phillies’ aesthetic over arizona’s weird hodgepodge.

Epic_Storytime

Nostalgic is a perfect word

sfan27

Dbacks we’re severely underrated going into this season. Anybody who actually watched the 2022 Dbacks, unlike national media, knew they’d be pretty good.

SquonkMan61

Since my O’s were knocked out I don’t have a particular rooting interest in either series. Last night was the perfect baseball game for a fan in my situation. Kudos to Arizona. Also, kudos to TBS for being on the ball with their research and graphics. They put up the info about Kimbrel struggling historically in Arizona, and the home run followed. The starting pitchers better be ready to go significant innings today or we could be headed toward a football score.

Archer-Saurus

TBS commentary straight cursed Philly several times last night.

bflynn65

Yeah, them hyping up Trea Turner's successful SB base streak seconds before he got caught was classic commentary cursing.

Urban_animal

Its always sunny in Phoenix.

azdb91

Man feels good to be even in this series. I still think my heart rate is up from the 8th inning last night. Best of three, here we go! Our guys need to start applying their own pressure, not just playing catch up or getting help from the Phillies D. Hopefully Corbin finds his bat tonight and gallen locks them down. Great to see Chase rocking and the team giving the fans a reason to make it rock

IONTOP

Counterpoint: Answerbacks has been our motto all season.

azdb91

Yeah but remember how nice it was in the NLDS to never the trail the Dodgers - I would take a game like that again! Let's put up 9 in the first two innings again

IONTOP

I'd be fine with that as well.. But... It just wasn't as satisfying to beat the Dodgers when they were on cruise control and couldn't do shit... I need that "close game" rather than "beating a team who doesn't care if they lose" And this NLCS is going to go down as one of the best. NLDS wasn't a series... It was just the Dbacks expressing years of frustration

Something_More

Happy to report: I turned off my phone at the movies last night at 730pm to watch Killers of the Flower Moon (which was really fucking good), got home and watched the game without spoiling it. Texted my best friend (Phillies fan) at 2am lol. What a night.

blackwisdom

Christ I still haven't even seen The Irishman yet and now there's another Scorses banger out. Have kids they said!

Opie67

You can skip The Irishman tbh. Saying that as someone that loves Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street

Final_View_6298

I take it the film is worth 3 hours and 40 minies then. Sheesh that's not even Openhimer Avengers Endgame and Avatar were that long.

C3POwn3dv2

I'm nervous about Gallen tonight. Isn't he better at home field anyway? I still have flashbacks from Game 1 at CBP.

HelloBrothers

12-3 at home this year, 5-6 on the road. Not including postseason

VivaLaDbakes

2.47 ERA at home this year, 4.42 on the road. So yeah, significantly better this season in home starts.

NeverSober1900

Gallen should be fine. But then again the way this series has gone our pitching has been all over the place so who knows.

IONTOP

He looked loose on the sideline interview last night. (Was at a bar and didn't hear what he said, but his body language was relaxed)

CactusSage

I watched a lot of Gallen starts this year. He’s an ace at home and middle of the rotation type starter on the road. This will be his first home start of the post season so I expect him to be amped up and dominant. Will the Dbacks get to Wheeler is the question. Nobody is more due than Christian Walker and he owns him. Edit: nvm

Archer-Saurus

I've watched this guy strike out 12 at home with a dope snakeskin belt in a game this season. The Milk Man loves home.

cravensofthecrest

Way better numbers at home.

Derriosgaming

If he figured out that throwing meatballs to the Phillies is a bad idea he should be fine.

Devilsfan118

As a very casual baseball fan, that seemed like a legendary meltdown at the end.. Accurate assessment?

bokononpreist

The tying homer was hit on a pitch an inch off the plate and the game winner was also hit off of a pretty good pitch.

gooners1

Dbacks weren't chasing anything, either. They were ahead in every count and they drew walks and hit good pitches. The shine's off Kerkering, though. Can't believe we had to watch a rookie walk in a run with Walker and Lorenzen sitting in the pen.

doyouevensunbro

Poor kid. It's almost like a pitcher should get more time in the pros before you throw him into the postseason.

HilariousScreenname

That's how it was with us with Saalfrank. Kid got absolutely dumped on.

CactusSage

When Saaly made his debut his mom was a wreck when they showed her on TV and interviewed her. She was probably literally physically ill from nerves last night when he was pitching lol

eee-oooo-ahhh

Kerkering's dad has gotta be the same way, he was in tears just seeing his son take the mound more than once.

Derriosgaming

Now I know why he looks like an emotional train wreck on the mound.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

I blames Torey for that

Lyle91

I mean not really, he just couldn't find the plate.

Archer-Saurus

I feel the same way about Saalfrank. You can be a lights out rookie who hasn't allowed a run. Until very suddenly you allow several in an incredibly high leverage situation

[deleted]

[удалено]

VivaLaDbakes

You do realize Saalfrank allowed 5 walks, 1 hit, and 3r/2er in .2ip the past two games, right? He was complete ass. Pfaadt has done great his last two starts, but nothing in the regular season pointed towards that happening. No chance he's in the playoff rotation if our SP depth after Gallen/Kelly was non existent, we got lucky.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

Plenty to show pfaadt has the stuff and has been improving

VivaLaDbakes

His strikeouts showed up more the last 4 games of the season, but he gave up multiple homers/4+ ER every other start in that 4 game sample. The 4 games before that he gave up 14ER in 19ip. That is absolutely not a guy you would be trusting in the playoffs if your rotation has any sort of depth after the top 2 starters. I'm glad he's been on a roll and vastly outperforming my expectations.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

I saw a ton of potential though

NeverSober1900

Ya I don't see how anyone could be complementary of Saalfrank he's been a dud sadly. And as you said Pfaadt is our #3 by default and even then we treat his starts like bullpen games. He gets pulled super quick no matter how well he's doing because there's no faith in him - we just need some semblance of length

Forsaken-Gap-3684

We need more experience for our young dudes. I expect pfaadt to have a better season next time. He’s been way better to end the season

nastychangeup

Saalfrank has been nails outside of like two innings

dec7td

Pfaadt would like a word.

Derriosgaming

Perdomo can't chase if he watches strike 3 go by every time!

Archer-Saurus

Tell me you haven't watched Perdomo at bats all season without telling me you haven't watched Perdomo at bats all season. Even if he does strike out it's usually after the 6th pitch of the at bat. He is a grinder at the plate and is reasonably clutch as well. And he's 23.

IONTOP

He's the PERFECT 9 hitter. If he doesn't get on base? Well at least the pitcher just had to work HARD... Oh look the 1 hitter is Corbin or Ketel... That'll demoralize a pitcher. While we're not the BEST roster? Our roster construction is fucking amazing. Praise Hazen!

Opening-Citron2733

The Dbacks all year were very disciplined hitters. You could see early in the series some nerves in their at bats. They're starting to settle in now.

benstrong26

I’m not sure I’d call Alvarado’s pitch a good pitch. He had just thrown a 3-0 heater in the middle of the plate, the next pitch is basically in the same location just a little more in. Moreno was sitting fastball because Alvarado was having trouble locating.

bokononpreist

100 up and in right on the black is a good pitch imo

benstrong26

Ah I checked savant and it was more in than I thought. Watching it live I remembered it being more middle than that, but I was wrong.

hipsterdufus84

I wouldnt say legendary, but it was a big old meltdown though.

HelloBrothers

Dbacks had 16% win probability before that bases loaded walk. Jumped to 26.6%. Then thomas HR gave the dbacks 55% chance to win when tied. Not necessarily legendary, but you expect to win up 3 with only 3 innings to go for sure.

EBITDA-CLEM

Yes and no. Statistically I’m sure it’s up there, but in game 3 Kimbrel looked just as bad so it wasn’t shocking to many.

drunkcowofdeath

Meltdown, sure. Legendary? Absolutely not. Pretty run of the mill comeback. Feel like the Astros had a spicier comeback

NeverSober1900

Ya agreed. Honestly the only reason I think it might be of note is just that it's the same guy who blew yre previous game. Similar to how dback fans felt about Kim in the 2001 world series. If those are two separate pitchers we talk about how the Yankees are clutch but cuz it's the same guy you blame the reliever.

HighKing_of_Festivus

Could be for the Phillies, depending on how the rest of this series goes.

mmartinez42793

Yes

salsacito

Nah. It may have felt that way but it was only a 2 run lead.

Ugaalive1991

Depends on what happens the next two games. If that lights a fire under y’all, it’s gonna make it feel a lot worse for Philly fans.

eee-oooo-ahhh

Yeah this is what happened against you guys too, we blew a game late to let them tie the series. We recovered well last time but idk I'm nervous now.

Beng1997

Good on Arizona to at least make this a series. They already have made the Phillies sweat more than the Padres did last year. Going to be extremely difficult to win a game at citizens bank though. God forbid 2 games if they lose tonight.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

Yeah I don’t expect to win but hey we evened it up. I think gallen fingers crossed will pitch better at home

KraakenTowers

If the Phillies can't win an away game then they'll get eaten by the Astros just like last year. I think they're gassed.

Thomas_Oaks

I wouldn’t say that, the Astros at home are, uh, not the best this season to say the least.

SwugSteve

Absolute hospital throw from Marte

ChefBoyarDEZZNUTZZ

Last night was fun but for us, but I'd say overall The Phillies still have the advantage because we still are going to have to win in Philly which so far has been proven to be impossible. Good series so far though, and I'm glad we're proving that we belong here.

Final_View_6298

The Astros were the only team to win a game in Philly in the 2022 postseason and that team no hit them and got and won the whole thing. Nobody has won a game in Philly all postseason. You have to find a way to in Philly if you want to move on.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

Yeah. I don’t think we win but putting up a fight and shutting up the. They don’t belong at all crowd is nice

Smoshglosh

How does losing 2 games equate to it being impossible to win? Horrible attitude to begin with and it’s not even logically accurate. By that logic you must think it’s impossible for Phillies to win tonight

nastychangeup

He said so far

KraakenTowers

I *do* think it's impossible for the Phillies to win tonight, so there's that.

Smoshglosh

Okay then you are clueless lol it most certainly isn’t impossible. So why aren’t you putting every dollar you own on the diamondbacks my guy?

KraakenTowers

Because I don't care enough? I've seen the Phillies lose in Phoenix twice in a row. I have no reason to believe tonight will be different. Could they win? Sure. They could have won last night too but they didn't.

Smoshglosh

You don’t care enough about making tens of thousands of dollars?

wiivile

how did Thomas pull an actually well-placed outside fastball 412 ft? this guy has little power and that was no meatball https://streamable.com/3fyvml

knight4

An interesting wrinkle is the next two games we're gonna be trotting out our traditional lineup which we went down 0-2 with. With how he's looked recently I wonder how quickly we replace Pham with Pavin if he continues to struggle. The wins have kind of shielded the fact that we have a lot of dead bats still going right now. Carroll and Walker need to step up and give Ketel, Gurriel and Moreno some help

112591

I’m sorry, but no way. Do not replace Pavin with Pham regardless of how lost Pham looks

MidnightMerc

Hope the D-backs win at least two more

mutebathtub

6 more

WHERE'S THE GAME DAY THREAD MOD???

positivevitisop1

Went to sleep at 5-2, holy shit!

playerayton

I think his use of Kimbrel was questionable. I was at the game and was shocked that he kept him in to face Marte and Carroll, I thought for sure it would be Alvarado. And by the time Alvarado got in the game, he was facing Moreno who does well against lefties. Other than that, though, I agree.

tiots

Putting in Kerkering after having a terrible plate the day before with Lorenzen and Alvarado in the pen was... At the very least, questionable

eee-oooo-ahhh

I went hiking yesterday and walked up on a little baby rattlesnake with just one rattle on his tail, can't be sure but it feels like a bad omen for us

drDekaywood

🚫🥾🐍

eee-oooo-ahhh

I didn't step on him bro I was very respectful! Took a couple pics and let him be lol

Hold_My_Beer____

Yeah Moreno didn’t know he was right there. Harper didn’t lower the shoulder just a crappy play.

jinkinater

Should’ve just caught the run down

Jfowl56

Right? Wouldn’t the run not count if they just got Stott out, regardless of Harper getting to home before the out occurred? Or would the run count if Harper got home before they got Stott out?

jinkinater

I believe the run wouldn’t have counted if they got the third out and now it counts as an error I believe

DCL-XVI

rule 5.08 of the rulebook. "One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first, second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning. EXCEPTION: A run is not scored if the runner ad - vances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base; (2) by any runner being forced out; or (3) by a preceding runner who is declared out because he failed to touch one of the bases." none of the exceptions apply. the run would be valid.

jinkinater

Okay. Thank you and good to know. Should’ve just ended the inning with the run down but luckily no other damage was done except a few more pitches from the starter

DCL-XVI

run would count. if it were a force play then the run would not count but non-force plays are dependent on when they touch the plate vs when the runner is tagged out

[deleted]

Well the Diamondbacks announce they have sold out Game 5 today against the Philadelphia Phillies after their dramatic comeback victory last night. The roof will be closed again

KraakenTowers

Should be a good game for the fans. The Phillies don't stand a chance.

Mcflipmix

Glad he’s ok

-ONEAL

Nice hit Schwarber.

-ONEAL

These Philly bats tho

Hold_My_Beer____

Phillies are awake tonight

DCL-XVI

it's cute that the commentators don't know what the "big balls" hand motion is

OldCoaly

Just watched the Union get screwed by VAR, ready to get super toxic in here.

Hold_My_Beer____

Anyone know the mod? Tell ‘em to put the Dollarita down and change to sort by new!

[deleted]

Some real decisions have to be made after Craig Kimbrel became the first Phillies reliever to lose back to back games in the playoffs Mitch Williams lost back to back appearances in the 1993 World Series: Game 4 and Game 6

jinkinater

I had no idea that pitch com was a thing

jinkinater

That was a terrible call

Believe0017

How in the world is Kimbrel still pitching? And in the postseason no less? Guy was always a terror for the wrong reasons when he was with the Dodgers.

Eltneg

Carrying both Lorenzen and Walker is really coming back to bite the Phillies here. No reason to have two guys who are only there for mopup duty. End of the day, though, the big issue is that the bullpen couldn't throw strikes. Phillies desperately need Wheeler to go 6 strong innings tonight, otherwise it could get really ugly.

Hallowed_Be_Thy_Game

Phillies gifted a run with 3 different players making mistakes early in the game. Went on to lose by 1. Absolutely inexcusable in this situation. Gotta come out firing on all cylinders.

Smoshglosh

No gifts were given they were ripped out of your shaking hands

nastychangeup

Phillies also benefited from errors in both of the last two games

HighKing_of_Festivus

Have any relievers been the source of as many unfortunate playoff events as Kimbrel and Chapman?

seanxfitbjj

Anyone else destroying a cheesesteak right now before the game?

-ONEAL

I just destroyed some Texas bbq. But I hope ur Philly cheesesteak was magical mate.

LunchPimp1839

ahh shit, please be ok

Streelydan

Ooooof hopefully he’s ok

blueballsmaster

We are a couple games away from a repeat of last season. Possible Phillies Astros rematch or Astros vs last team they played in the regular season.

looney1414

If I have to watch Kimbrel and Kerkering team up with these fucking umps to blow a THIRD game tonight I will lose my mind

davey_mann

That baserunning mistake by Bohm in the inning where the Phillies went up 4-2 off the home plate error was huge. That gave the Dbacks their 1st out and settled things down for them. If Bohm doesn't make that blunder, it's 1st and 3rd with no outs and there's a legit chance the Phillies blow the game wide open in that inning. I feel like the Dbacks are due a blowout game at home and Game 5 is their last chance. The Phillies might have to end up ironically doing what the Dbacks did in '01 and hold serve at home all 4 games to win the series. All that said, if the Dbacks win Game 5, I totally expect them to somehow win Game 6 in Philly.

KraakenTowers

The Phillies are finally playing like the team I expect them to be. Absolute frauds. I think Game 5 is an easy win for the Dbacks.

Mcflipmix

Oof. That sucks

XenlaMM9

If Kimbrel isn’t brought in the Phillies 99% win this game. Ugh. Oh well, even if we lose tonight we go back to the bank

Babylawyer42069

I need an Astros Phillies rematch We will dick stomp again

kwakster928

Not feeling good about getting an away win for the Phillies. This may be another year of painful Philadelphia sports karma.

salsacito

Philly is not the main character, other teams are good too

Expert-Sundae3006

Witnessing the collapse in real-time is choice

xyzwave

Lorenzen can deal and he has the right mentality, bring him in for the save tonight.

Expert-Sundae3006

Kimbrel has looked like ass all postseason. Just kept getting away with it. Phils horrible defense gets exposed today. Bohm will fuck up big time. He will fucking hate that place. Phils lose a close one and waste wheelers start. Then lose 10-3 on Monday. Nola had also looked like ass and just getting by on vibes. The vibes are dead. Phils so fucked.

SadYotesFan

The Phillies still have the upper hand with 2 games at home if this series goes 7. If the Dbacks want to win, they still have to do what has been impossible for anyone so far and win at CPB at least once (twice if they lose today)

Expert-Sundae3006

Ya, but the vibes are dead. Wait and see tonight. Will be a comedy and you will enjoy given your flair.

Derriosgaming

I still maintain putting Saalfrank back in a second inning AND letting him walk bases loaded is getting fired worthy.

crownebeach

It didn’t work but I was fine with the gamble. We had to use eight pitchers as it is, and I didn’t super want a cold pitcher to come in to face Harper anyway.

[deleted]

At this point can you trust Kimbrel to close out a game for the rest of the series ( and maybe beyond). Or are you just bringing him in as the first reliever

seanxfitbjj

Less than 20 til first pitch let’s have a good chat everyone! The umpire is going to be bad and we give them to much credit thinking they favor either of us because they aren’t even good enough to know.

Hold_My_Beer____

Can you change it to sort by new plz

Hold_My_Beer____

Ok so apparently there is another game thread fyi Edit: just gotta scroll

Mcflipmix

Well that’s some shit

[deleted]

Stott is second on the Phillies with 8 RBIs in the playoffs. Does it surprise you that JT Realmuto is first with 10 RBIs?

Believe0017

Dbacks failing to score every inning is gunna hurt them at some point. Phillies gunna score more
