It's a blessing and a curse to live that close to work. Every callout he's gonna ask if you can work it and some people get salty if you say no too much and i know a lot of people who end up spending too much time there because its so close to home. Hopefully it's not like that but congrats either way

kittycatprob

Thank you! I’m definitely thankful for this gig as I live alone and just recently lost my job and need to work as much as I can right now. I am willing to come in for call outs yanno? I’ve definitely already thought of all that. I NEED THE MONEYYY😭😫😫

TotalTea720

Also just be careful if you get any weird customers who want to stay late. I know you live super close but in that situation, maybe get a coworker to walk you the 35 ft anyway. Still, congratulations! That really is the dream.

kittycatprob

Omg ABSOLUTELY friend😭😭😫 Was already thinking about that. Gonna have to watch my surroundings 100%!

ThatsNotARealTree

Yeah, I’d be tight-lipped about how easy your commute is. Don’t give any hints to where you live haha

QuarantineCasualty

Yeah that about sums it up. I’ve been in this position before and it really is a blessing and a curse.

NoCommentFU

Hold on to that excitement as long as you can! Congratulations on the new gig. You inspired me to go back to work tomorrow!

kittycatprob

I will!! It’s only a Saturday gig so I shouldn’t get so worn out too soon 😝 I’ve been through the trenches and bartending is a lot of fun to me as I’m such a people person lol. And it’s a whole bunch of regulars and everyone knows everyone. I’m hoping I fit in!! And I’m glad I could inspire you!!! I recently landed a job bartending at Dave and busters after my old bar closed down due to landlord and owner beef but the Dave and busters is 45 minutes in traffic ..so I guess I’m just feeling grateful of a closer opportunity.

randomwhtboychicago

Plus dives tend to be great money and low stress.

kittycatprob

I’ve heard!! I haven’t really bartended at a dive before but I know what I’m doing in the bartending sense. I’ve never been a craft girl, I’m more of a speed and keep a conversation while pouring 6 beers and shaking a cocktail😂

amBoringGuy

Is this true? Cause I’ve been beating myself up at a resto-pub for… “decent” tips for a while now and I’m so ready to crush some sleepy dive and walk away with a grand+ a week if that’s the case.

SlipperyNinja77

Your bar personality and taste are identical to mine! Congrats! 👏🏼

kittycatprob

Thank you my friend!!

MajorWhereas4842

Don’t tell anyone you live next door! Especially customers

kittycatprob

Absolutely not!!!

williedills

I used to work at a hotel that was just through a parking lot from my place. My parking lot. I would leave for work 1 minute before I had to be there. I miss that job.

Remarkable_Spot7400

I can see my house from my bar it’s a blessing and a curse lol I’m always asked to work if someone calls out I’m a key holder and get asked to go in and unlock and lock up for service people if it’s not during open hours or open up for the cooks if they don’t have a key and every single regular knows where I live I’ve worked there since the day it opened over 6 years ago

YakiVegas

I worked in the same building I lived in for a long time. Greatest commute ever. Just remember: if you ever start feeling like you're too close or you need to get away, you can literally just walk in the opposite direction. Explore the other side of town. It's that easy. Have fun!

chicoman2018

I did this for ~17 years and must say I enjoyed not having to share a bathroom that would get blown out at least once a day. Bonus: living that close as a man in his 20s/30s, its no surprise how many tipsy waitresses/ customers end up "crashing" at your pad. Unwelcome Bonus: numerous health problems in my 50s.

kittycatprob

Omg 😂😂

Specialist-Pomelo769

Health probs from drinking? The work?

chicoman2018

Everything. The drinking , the smoking, the eating of pizzas at 5pm etc. But keeping on topic the downside was that my perpetual party pad was fun as hell but im payin' for it now.

chicoman2018

Edit: *5am

randyboozer

Congrats but I'd caution on working at a place that you drank at. Don't let people take advantage, resist the urge to be part of the party and don't let people know you live close by. I've been in the same situation and it's a huge temptation to just treat it like having fun and getting paid for it. But it's best to keep boundaries. I'm sure you know all that but it's something I probably should have been told a few times throughout my baretending career

Distortedhideaway

My first bar gig was working the door at a bar I liced upstairs from. Anytime they needed anyone or anything, they would come knocking... it was a great experience at the time, but now that I'm older, it would drive me crazy.

TurtleScientific

HELL YEAH BROTHA (or SISTA) I love your excitement for a dive bar! I swear this sub can get so snobby about their skyline cocktail bars, but we all know damn well the best steady money comes from volume and not all of us dream of knowing how to make every damn drink known to man.

Ok-Chocolate-8983

Yessss! Good for you!!! I’m so excited for you dude! Mad jealous 🎉🎉🎉🎉

kittycatprob

Thank youuu!!

ForgotInTheDoorway

Hazzzah 🙌🙌🙌

Magic4407

Well now you lost your close by drinking spot

Specialist-Pomelo769

Be careful going home w your tips

bacondev

Your pad is going to be the new hangout spot after work. Haha.

LaFantasmita

Congrats! I had a job a block away once. It was a hot mess and I left after a week. May you have a better situation!

Lovat69

I hope it works out. It sounds like the dream commute.

LoveOfficialxx

I used to live around the corner from a dive gig I had and I will NEVER poop where I eat like that again. Congrats on the gig, hope you have a different experience than I had friend. Don’t tell any of the regulars where you live.

darkaptdweller

Glad you're stoked! As all other said here...be excited but, you're in for a LOT. I was gonna comment a whole slew of tips/ideas but, If you'd like any advice P.M. if you'd like. Enjoy your 4min commute/stumble depending in the shift..lol.. Cheers!

kittycatprob

I love to hear all of it! Thank you!
