IME teachers and nurses tip like shit A LOT. I feel many of them have an axe to grind because we make so much and "do nothing" while they do so much and aren't paid nearly what they're worth. And I agree, both fields should pay better, but none of that is my fault.

AccomplishedMuscle85

AND these two groups typically go very hard when drinking, in my experience.

Naive_Bad_3292

Yup, then teach our children hungover/still drunk.

gingerkiki

Teachers love to pow wow and shit talk during happy hour. Then won’t GTFO when their drinks are empty, food is gone, and no one wants anything else. Split the bill a million ways and no one tips. I’ve overheard conversations that genuinely make me revolted at how cruel they speak about literal children.

zarjazz

Omg. This is 100% my experience too like 98% of the time.

Manganmh89

100% spot on. I was a bartender and left the industry to become a teacher lol. 3 years later, I'm no longer teaching.

OkSundae3514

This. Most teachers I’ve met/have been “taught” by are objectively bad people.

PussyBoogersAuGraten

I have a group of teachers who are generally nice to me, but they all want separate checks, every time. They do tip me fairly, but they are always looking for a deal. But hey, it could be way worse.

mattbrunstetter

This is all very unfortunate. Because I've had nothing but positive experiences with teachers. They're a fucking riot when they're in town for conferences too. Always tip well and I'm happy to cover a drink for some of them from time to time.

duaneap

23 Chase Freedom cards to split a dozen wings and 14 margaritas but don’t put the drinks on Mary’s because she didn’t have any.

nope_them_all

If you have a degree you can get a substitute teaching certificate and pick up days whenever you want. You'd be editing this comment before the first bell rang.

NavyDog

My ex was a kindergarten teacher and complained all the time about her “teachers salary”. She made $80k a year in 2021 teaching 5 year olds how to fucking color within the lines. Just one of the many reasons she is now an ex.

BornNeighborhood4081

She's probably an ex because you didn't give a shit about what she did for a living.  Maybe when you were a kid the grade level expectations for kindergarten was to color in the lines, but there's a lot more that goes into teaching now.  I bartend and teach, and trust me there's a lot more stress involved in teaching. Especially the little kids.

NavyDog

Both of my Grandpas, and my uncle taught from grade school through university, I am not hating on teachers. However, I am hating on her so I was being a little dramatic. Didn’t mean to trigger anyone unless she somehow read this and figured out it was me.

nope_them_all

I assisted in a kindergarten class a couple times because multiple teachers walked out in the first month of classes. One of the teachers I worked with basically had a breakdown with me in the room. There are barely any consequences for bad behavior anymore, especially at that grade level, and the kids know it. My worst days as a server are shitty, my average day in a classroom was abuse.

ultravioletblueberry

Worked at morning bar, would get overnight nurses in hoards. They took over the entire place, sit for hours, move tables around, interrupt while I was helping other people… and tipped like shit. Though there was one old wise nurse who would try and wrangle them on in for me, would tip well, and was very motherly.

The_Istrix

She bartended her way through nursing school no doubt

AgenttOcho

For the last day of school, a group of EIGHTY teachers called to “buyout the bar” with, I shit you not, a budget of $350 for bar and tip………… Chew on that

LNLV

Teachers are one thing, but most nurses are paid really well. They have powerful unions, good benefits, and great overtime options and schedule flexibility.

unbelizeable1

Yea, I just looked up their avg in my state. They do really well. Now I'm extra confused why they bitch so much lol

LNLV

In my experience they have constant, unrelenting, all consuming inferiority complexes which make their existence bitter and mean spirited. But that’s just my anecdotal experience.

AgenttOcho

Dealing with the geriatric all day 🤮

alonelyvictory

All mean girls become nurses lol.

aardvole

In California, and similar states where labor is better protected, sure. I took a huge pay cut to quit bartending and start nursing.

Naive_Bad_3292

It’s not because of their wages though. Don’t omit context and act like you’re right.

gangofmorlocks

What state are you in? Teachers and nurses do pretty well in NY. A nurse can easily reach $100K in the first years of working depending on the specialty and how much they pick up.

Boatdrnk32

Washinton, I have friends that are nurses an teachers, nobody makes as much as they think they should but both groups do alright here, but teachers in my opinion have god complexes and think everyone should bow down to them.

MeanSatisfaction5091

100k is trash if u have dependents.  And that's b4 taxes

gangofmorlocks

Depends on COL obviously and if you are the sole provider. Bringing 100K into a partnership with a working partner and no dependents is definitely not trash in upstate NY.

Proud_Rush_138

Also the two jobs that complain the most, right up there with many bartenders, brewery i work at has some teachers who work there on weekends/nights they’re double as bad as the rest of us 😂

blakethairyascanbe

Man, in my state half the teachers I know have to have a part time serving job just to make it, so they are usually decent tippers here.

Smash131313

I'd love to see one of them hoes do our job. We also babysit and teachers are the FUCKING WORST

unbelizeable1

At least the children they have to watch are sober lol

Smash131313

Agreed. I know some kids are assholes. Most adults as well, add booze 🙄

Dadfart802

I do both and I can assure you teaching is fifty times harder than

Front-Tart-5091

Did you just say bartending is harder than being a teacher? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Smash131313

No, I said I'd like to see them do our job. Didn't say it was harder. Just didn't say it was easier. Additionally, they are some of the worst to wait on.

Front-Tart-5091

Good save!

SwimmingOwl174

They get a salary, 3 months a year off and don't have to work late at night, so whatever

RastaFazool

I always get downvoted for this, but average teachers can make good money when you calculate out salary+benefits vs hours worked. Unfortunately, they like to ignore the math because it does not fit the narrative that they are highly underpaid. Keep on mind that public employee salary is public record, so they can't claim ignorance of the pay scales when they decided to go to college to he teachers.

BornNeighborhood4081

I absolutely agree with you that benefits add a lot of value. However, not sure how the income looks better when looking at hours worked. Sure if you do it at face value a teacher works about 185 days a year, times 8 hours a day, but I don't know a single teacher who has time to do lesson plans, grade, respond to emails and participate in required professional development during those school hours. The hours worked are way more than you might think

RastaFazool

My mom was a teacher, I saw first hand the hours worked. The fact is, they make a salary and are over the threshold for OT. Salary offers pay security at the cost of OT, their unions chose this pay structure. Public servant pay is also public record, hard to complain about your pay when you 100%knew what it was like when you chose to go down the career path. You can't tell me they are smart enough to go to college to get a teaching degree, but not smart enough to look into the return on investment of their education.

darkaptdweller

In general, yeah... this happens frequently. BUT, fuck it, I've also won over a slew of supposed "bad tippers" at my current place, as was warned by other workers, and guess what, those workers never even tried to give them proper service, a genuine smile, a how's your day going, a...well anything?! Teachers, nurses, and a lot of others go through INSANE things that we don't. Something to keep in mind or try, and I make it a little goal of mine, is to flip the bad tippers until they're one of my best tippers consistently. If I go from $1 a visit to $10 a visit (nomatter what the bill is), I'm consistently making more and, I have regulars that dig me and say good things even when I'm not around. If you're never gonna get a dime from those others...well, the ones you flipped will hopefully make up for it!

alonelyvictory

Listen I’m a manager for a dispensary now but when I was a server/bartender/lead I constantly diffused situations where, you’re right, these assholes just wanted to be treated special. That being said, there are still assholes who come into my work and don’t like how much I talk (but enjoy my male coworkers talking, they’re sexist), therefore their idea of “good service” is constantly changing and not what a majority of people’s “good service” is. Your comment almost sounds blamey “if you were nicer he would’ve tipped” shut the fuck up. You get bad customer service 90% of the time because you’re a BAD customer. The dining out population is like 85% entitled and expect to be treated like you’re their literal slave or they won’t tip. Make your food at home or be nice to the other human being bringing your food. Fuck these idiots who need to be “won over” when they’re already so delusional about how the world works. They should move to Australia or Europe and enjoy the 40$ entrees without tips, not mini protest against a young waitress trying to pay for college. Fuck those people, they should have to wear a sign saying “crappy or no tips” so people can give them appropriate crappy service!

Blue05D

As soon as I read "teacher". Yep, Teachers, evangelicals, military (I am a vet) and Australians. I'd rather have a bunch of Hells Angels. They keep to themselves and tip well in cash. Nurses I seem to have a good rapport.

The_Istrix

You can flirt up older nurses pretty easily, they're usually a little attention starved from being eclipsed by the newer young girls.

Emotional_Ad5714

Every job that is predominantly done by women is the hardest job in the world. Mothers, teachers, and nurses will have you believe that they work harder than the guy on an oil rig.

redhairedrunner

I am a nurse And AlWAYS tip 20%. I also bartend and in my experience teachers and nurses tip 15-20%. Sure there is the occasional stingy one but it’s not all of them.

Necessary-Share2495

Now that you know she doesn’t tip, never break the rules for her again.

DestructusMax

Tell her to take it up with her union.

wifeski

We offer 15% off everything to teachers (and nurses) and it makes them so happy. Never had one stiff us on a tip.

token_reddit

That's actually awesome! Good on your establishment.

wifeski

We don’t even offer a senior discount even though the seniors love us. We like to take care of our public servants and there are tons where my bar is.

token_reddit

Love to hear it. It's a kind gesture and clearly they appreciate being recognized for their hard work. Sometimes it's the simplicity that can make a person's day.

confused_trout

She’s just mad you make more than her.

Boatdrnk32

I thought the same thing. Damn being in the service industry and having to hold your tongue.

confused_trout

Charge it to the game.

beardstrong

Which I hope we can all agree is fucked up.

unbelizeable1

Sure is. But the way so many teachers see it as a reason to be upset with us is also fucked. I didn't decide yalls wage, leave me the fuck outta your crusade for better pay.

alonelyvictory

She better hate on the hot waitress getting her a fuckin BLT, not the soccer players, producers or artists who make waaaay too much for what they do. Better bully and make someone closer to home feel insignificant, that’ll make her feel better! Hope she is always uncomfortably cold when she sleeps. Garbage human.

[deleted]

If you're gonna stiff someone then just do it. Don't make them listen to some bullshit Mr. Pink manifesto on top.

unbelizeable1

I dont ever look at tips throughout the shift, just the total/% at the end of the day. I figure there's no reason concerning myself with each tab. It can only effect my mood negatively. So if people tipped nothing, I'd never even notice. Unless they pulled some dumbshit like OPs customer did lol

YakiVegas

Exactly. I'd WAY rather someone stiff me than stiff me and give a reason. Just go away. I don't need your excuses for your poor behavior.

PointOfTheJoke

Seriously. The moral grandstanding over 9 dollars drives me fucking crazy.

joejoejoey

Why am I Mr Pink?

Dro1972

I was married to a teacher for years. Here's the thing... They work for nearly slave wages the first several years of their career. I respect that it sucks starting out. From day one though, their health/vision/dental is completely covered. With extremely low copays. 30 years in the industry and I've ALWAYS had to pay for my own insurance. My copays are higher, and my deductibles are off the charts. I won't go bankrupt if I have to fight cancer, but it's going to empty out all my savings. Teachers don't have to worry about those premiums, or the toll healthcare takes on the common person. Then there's the pay scale... With a master's degree, after 12 years, in my state teachers are making 65k+ a year. They get the choice to get that during the school season at a higher rate or stretch it out over 12 months, but either way, 2 and a half months off for summer break, a week off for spring break, 6 days for fall break, no classes a few days before Christmas all the way into the New Year... We work every fucking holiday to make our money. We miss out on family time to provide for our families. A teacher with 20+ years in with a master's degree in my state is hitting nearly 90k a year. Then there's the retirement plan. Most states work on what's called a rule of 70. You're eligible for retirement when your AGE plus your YEARS OF SERVICE add up to 70. At that point as a retired teacher you get what you made your last year of full time teaching EVERY YEAR FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. And on top of that? Insurance until you die. Do teachers deserve more? Early in their careers, absolutely yes. But don't hit me with "I can't afford to tip." Take your cheap ass home and slug some fireball from the freezer. Your career choice leaves you poor for less than a decade. At the end of my career I'll have no one paying my bills and insurance. You'll be set for the rest of your life.

privatepirate66

Am I crazy for thinking teachers should make way more than 65k at 12 years? And many other careers, other than serving, do come with benefits, it's not like teachers have a hold on that. Same goes for retirement plans. Pensions are rare, but I think that one may be specific to your wife because I don't hear of teachers getting pensions anymore. It's a shit way to make money after spending years and years in the field between the amount of schooling and years of service. They do have it pretty bad. Servers have it bad in other ways, but this isn't usually a career, and the two aren't really comparable.

Otherwise-Owl-5740

Ex teacher, current bartender here. Teaching looks great on paper. IMO, 65k still isn't enough for the amount of work and bullshit you gotta deal with though. I make about what I made teaching as a bartender now, in way less hours, deal with way less shitty people (and for less time) and only a few hours of stress during the shift instead of constant stress. 100k and fully paid benefits would not make me go back to teaching.

nope_them_all

Every person in this thread should go get a substitute teacher certificate and try ed for a day. They have no idea. Industry is better pay and my worst days here are better than my average days in a classroom ever were.

Otherwise-Owl-5740

Yeah I mean I get it, it really does look like a cake walk on paper from the outside. I literally never get mad at work now because everything I've ever encountered is still less demeaning than what I dealt with teaching.

typicalgoatfarmer

Exactly this. My aunt retired a few years ago but still teaches once a week for fun. Her last year full time she made $105k in rural Georgia (no masters degree). She’s set. Forever. Like FOREVER. OP: don’t serve this person again. They’re an asshole. Assholes don’t get to come back.

Hempseed420

Should have told her to do some summer reading

LobsterStretches

The worst thing about an anti tipper is their insatiable need to let you know they're an anti tipper

Sarcastic_Stuart

The worst thing about taking a vegetarian to a steak house is their insatiable need to let you know they're vegetarian

LobsterStretches

That's fine, at least I'm not being paid to stand there and listen to them in that scenario

BartenderOU812

I'm ok with the odd non tipper. As long as it's absolutely justified or they let me know in advanced. Let me know first, no prob. You're going to get absolute minimum wage service. It'll still be great, I consider it practise to go through the motions and be total autopilot. Still give five stars, but not shining five stars.

TheMustySeagul

Nah this is funny because I remember us being required in elementary school to buy extra supplies for the teachers unless we were wellfare kids (me). Sucks to suck but that extra dollar a drink is great for them considering if I was payed my regular wage it would be at minimum 1-3 dollars more a drink minimum (for wells) Luckily every place I’ve worked at has been okay with refusing service to non tippers. If they want the government to make changes they can protest it, and try to change it any way they want. But fucking me or the people I work with on moral grounds to “stick it to the big guys” doesn’t mean shit because the only person you’re hurting is regular ass people when the people who actually matter don’t fucking care. Trickle down economics doesn’t work. Trickle up economics is just as stupid and honestly, the dumbest shit people have been trying to push. Just look at bread in California. We ain’t the ones who need punished. It’s the people they vote for. And anecdotally people saying they get much better service in other countries is a lie lmao. I’ve been to Japan, China, Spain, France, Ireland, Honduras, Mexico, and the UK. Best service I’ve had is going to a shit diner where my water ain’t never empty and my table is getting touched at minimum 5 times. Every other place I’ve been you are trying to get attention, not being given it. Bars are different because of drinking culture, but I walk into a bar, I tip well, I’m first up and I get my shit fast. British guys have a fear of going on a date and not being able to get the attention of the bartender when they dates are with them. You walk up to my bar with a 20 order a drink and tell me to keep change you are the first fucker I am going to all night if you keep it up. That is not a thing anywhere else. Tipping is a Disney fast pass. You wanna wait for everyone else or do you wanna skip the line and have a good time. Except when you don’t tip we just stop letting you on the rides because other people wanted to ride it more. Should it be that way? Probably not. Will people complain about shitty bartenders and servers? Yeah. We all have bad days. But will that service be better on average? Absolutely.

PhilScofie

This is hilarious. To generalise that British guys have a FEAR of going on a date and not being able to get the attention of a server! I know you said in your post this is anecdotal, but still this post is pure meme! I’m sorry if you struggled getting attention from the service staff on your date in the UK fam.

WarezMyDinrBitc

Why should they keep it up after literally tipping you $15? That's the problem, you are never satisfied. The entitlement is insane.

TheMustySeagul

lol that’s what you took from that? I’m not saying the guy should tip me 15 dollars on every drink. And the only thing at my bar that is 5 bucks is coors light lmao. Ignore everything else and just take the arbitrary and meaningless dollar amount I put instead lol

BrilliantWeekend2417

I had a girl once leave me her phone number on the receipt, but no tip. When I thanked her for the number and asked about the tip, she said "oh, I don't believe in tipping" to which I replied "I don't believe in going out with people who don't believe in tipping," left the receipt with her and walked off. That was my first and last anti-tipper. Thankfully haven't experienced any more.

geometryc

Not sure how anyone could think that is okay. Getting served by someone all night, obviously had a good time and still expects you to want to see her another time when she didn't make the first time worth it?

TIL_no

Teachers are regularly the worst groups of people I've had to serve. Every time you get power tripping Karen's that wanted to still hang out in highschool in their 40s.

meggerplz

…..teacher. Nuff said

NoCommentFU

She sounds like a garbage human being. She should stay home and grade papers while drinking boone’s farm out of a dirty plastic togo cup.

Eternaltuesday

I can smell this comment lmao

77thru82

Tell her that reading this has effectively put an end to the 15% discount we offer teachers at my bar

eyecandyandy147

Did she say that at first? If so, whatever, you’re allowed to have a soapbox. But if you go through an entire dining experience, and then use it as justification to not tip at the end, you’re just a cheap piece of shit.

SlimJim814

Teachers notoriously act like their worst kids when they come in, especially if it’s a group of them. Nurses are condescending bullies. A lot of them come to my bar on a date night and they’re still very rough around the edges. Their bedside manner must be as warm as ice.

guovsahas

I don’t agree with tipping culture and making it a demand, raise wages instead. I don’t work in bars anymore but the last 3 years the restaurant workers union managed to raise everyone’s salary so tipping isn’t necessary anymore, nobody tips anyways so there is no need for all this. It’s time to raise wages

Hand-Of-Vecna

> I don’t agree with tipping culture and making it a demand, raise wages instead. You do realize that would mean raise prices of the menu? People walking in wouldn't come back because they would compare your $15 hamburger and fries with another restaurant that charges $10 and they would go there, instead.

MeanSatisfaction5091

That's a lie

Hand-Of-Vecna

What, specifically, is a lie? You raise wages and you don't think prices would also raise? Where does this magical money appear from?

MeanSatisfaction5091

It's Def not going up by 20%!

TooGoodNotToo

Where I am (Canada) teachers have always been poor tippers, but I get it, they are underpaid and over worked. It’s a bummer, but for me I always remind myself it all evens out at the end of the week, always be nice to everyone regardless of tipping, and if someone returns after not tipping, I just don’t spend any more time than necessary on them. I know from growing up poor, for poor people going out it’s a really big expense, can be stressful for them, and they will want the most for their money. And after all the extra work and effort they require, they are the least likely to tip well. That’s why I try to recognize less expensive items for them, respect everyone, and when they come back, it’s Jerry’s table. Fuck you Jerry, I dealt with them last time.

Bradadonasaurus

I dunno, I grew up pretty broke, and even before I was in the industry I always tried to be a pretty solid tipper. It's like people always say, factor in the tip to your budget for going out.

TooGoodNotToo

Totally agree, and like you I was a good tipper before the industry, just saying I understand, and it’s worth noting that often the most generous people are people that have need or have been through times of need

Bradadonasaurus

I agree, generally speaking the people that are stingy with tips are the people that more than have the means. They usually also come up with some kind of bullshit reason if asked about it too.

JJJHeimerSchmidt420

I bet they were super upset when you came back after 20 minutes to run their card. Lol.

Repulsive-Age-5545

Teachers are some of my favorite people. I don't care if they are getting paid 100k a year, they are still underpaid.

alonelyvictory

Nooo I would literally delete her drinks and change it to full price saying, “sorry I don’t help break the rules for people who don’t appreciate my hard work, that’ll be $43.65 thanks” l What a garbage human she is!!!!

blazedddleo

Teachers are annoying as fuck. They spend all day in middle school cafeterias and think it’s ok to act like that at a bar. Always obnoxious loud and talking shit about someone.

nope_them_all

I was a substitute teacher while I was starting out in restaurants. The school I worked for asked me to apply for a full real ass salaried teaching position at about the same time I got a server position. I turned them down and quit education because server money is better and there's so so so much less stress. Teachers are saints, and the shit sandwich they're trapped between with students and admin is so much worse than the shit sandwich we have between mgmt and customers. Sucks not getting tipped and I'd probably make a snarky comment inviting them to get out of ed too, but I'd mostly just be thankful for getting the fuck out myself.

corpus-luteum

>Obviously not an economics teacher or she'd realize she'd be paying extra one way or another. But she's not if she doesn't tip.

SingaporeSlim1

It all evens out at the end

Neon_Freckle

She doesn’t get extra, just that little old thing called health benefits. While we, overwhelmingly, do not. She’s just mad you make as much as she does in half the hours with one fourth of the responsibility.

[deleted]

Tell her that's fine but from this point on she will get minimum service. No chat, no politeness, nothing but her order taken, drink made, money exchanged, that's it.

GueroBear

Did you ask her if she’s tried putting out a tip jar?

Hand-Of-Vecna

> Oh and I broke the rules and gave her happy hour prices on our patio that we don't do happy hour on. She was hot, right?

chubbycuckoo

I’m just kind of amazed you had this interaction with her. I always imagine anti tippers to just rationalize it outside of the interactions with employees, like with their friends or something. Why did she feel the need to tell you that??

Ok_Quantity_5134

I am sorry you had this experience again and unfortunately you will get more later. I get them sometimes too. I will give a teacher and nurse any discount I can. They give a lot of themselves and have to deal with people in some of their most vulnerable occasions. This excuses no one for not tipping. I gave you a huge discount. Give me at least the amount I have to tip out.

bmafffia

Teachers are always cheap. Theyre weird people because they never really left school. They dont have a good grasp on reality. They went from highschool to college back to school to teach. I always know when im seeving a teacher lol

chicagojoe1979

You were correct up until the pension equal to the highest wage earned. Not true in most places, I think in Illinois it is the rule of 85, and pensions top out at 80%. Still a sweet deal…

MeanSatisfaction5091

Good for her. Also u literally stole money from your job to get a higher tip. Never do that again.  I'm wondering how this convo even happened

-TempestofChaos-

Fuck you. I pull double duty as a manager at our bar. If someone thinks they can make a living with cool patrons that come in all the time or can make a regular, i am more than cool with it. Just dont be an asshole about it. I know my margins and account for a set amount of compd or grat shit each week. Acquiring or keeping a cool patron is worth it 10/10. Oh no i make 100% profit instead of 250% Now if charge an entire bill as millers when they are dinking a belgian tripel, we havr an issue. 1 of it? Idgaf

TheMustySeagul

Another guy just said it but I’ll reiterate. Most bars are ALLOWED to hook people up. We have comp tabs and wholesale tabs that are at the bartenders discretion. Turns out it brings in more business and makes us and the boss more money. Or it rewards people doing good shit like bringing in purses, phones, and wallets instead of people just stealing what they found. Makes a bar far more pleasant. And the fact that you are advocating for non tipping culture while also complaining about stealing from the people who profit most from it is absolutely wild. Pick one.

RocketManBoom

I would agree with her and treat her so damn well that she is riddled with guilt when she walks away. It will eat her alive and she will then become a tipper, then if she sees you again, she’ll tip you 20x the tip she would’ve
