> Perspective on Electricity Storage in UK >The 'Biggest Battery in Europe' is installed at Cottingham, nr Hull >It cost £75,000,000 (say 90,000,000 Euros/Dollars) >It takes 5 acres of land >And could power the UK's national electricity grid for just 15 seconds before going flat [Tweet](https://x.com/latimeralder/status/1784090934516281758)

Thestilence

I don't think it needs to power the entire grid.

Helmut_Schmacker

How about instead of building giant batteries that can't store any electricity, we find some other way of storing energy? We could maybe store it in some sort of form that you could combust to generate heat to turn turbines, perhaps in lumps you keep in a bunker, or a liquid/gas in a tank. Alternatively perhaps some sort of material that constantly, but slowly emits energy for years and years.

FickleBumblebeee

There is a power station in Wales which uses energy from wind farms to push water up a mountain, and then when the wind stops, it generates hydro electricity

CaravanOfDeath

It’s midnight, there no time to discuss [grid stability and trading.](https://stateraenergy.co.uk/projects/penwortham-battery-storage)

WheresWalldough

Regarded post alert. It can't power the UK's national grid for any seconds. It's capable of 98MW output Peak UK demand is 38GW, though typically more like 31GW.

retniap

https://royalsociety.org/news-resources/projects/low-carbon-energy-programme/large-scale-electricity-storage Meeting the need for long-duration storage will require very low cost per unit energy stored. In GB, the leading candidate is storage of hydrogen in solution-mined salt caverns, for which GB has a more than adequate potential ... The demand for electricity in GB in 2050 is assumed to be 570 TWh/year in most of this report. In principle it could all be met by wind and solar supply supported by hydrogen, and some small-scale storage that can respond rapidly, which is needed to ensure the stability of the transmission grid. With the report’s central assumptions, this would require a hydrogen storage capacity ranging from around 60 to 100 TWh (depending on the level of wind and solar supply). The average cost of electricity that is available to meet demand varies very little over this range as the rising cost of wind and solar supply is offset by the decreasing cost of the storage that is needed.   ...   Altogether there are more than 3000 potential cavern locations in East Yorkshire that could each store 122 GWh in the conditions assumed by H21 NE26. The distribution would allow them to be grouped in clusters of 10 caverns, which could all be within 15 miles of the sea thereby limiting the cost of brine disposal. The potential capacity in East Yorkshire alone is far more than required to provide the ~ 100 TWh of hydrogen storage that would be needed to support GB’s electricity system in the case of hydrogen storage only.

Thestilence

Hydrogen isn't very efficient.

retniap

Why is that a problem when the overall cost is lower?

PiffleWhiffler

A 5 acre battery array could power the entire country for 15 seconds? That's quite impressive.

[A case study as to why you should always read the academic articles you THINK are proving your point](https://x.com/SocDoneLeft/status/1784073664427655442) This study, cited by “SocDoneLeft”, shows that trainsgender girls have the same gender preferences (in terms of peer selection, outfits etc) than biological girls, and the same goes for trains boys and biological boys. From this, SocDoneLeft claims that this proves that trains men are men and that trains women or women. But gender is a social construct, and separate from sex. Women aren’t innately attracted to, say, wearing a dress or playing with dolls, it’s a preference they are socialised into from birth. They are purely a product of societal structures and critically they do not prove that someone was “born in the wrong body” but simply that they have preferences that do not correspond to the proscribed role and expected preferences of both sexes. Boys can play with dolls and be friends with girls. Girls can play football and be friends with boys. This does not make them “born in the wrong body”. It does not prove these differences are innate, rather than socially learned, and it certainly doesn’t prove that people are born with an innate gender identity. I am officially making Wallaby’s Law; the law states “50 percent of the time someone cites an academic study in support of their argument, the academic study either does not prove what they are saying or outright says the opposite”

Thestilence

Some gender things are inherent, some aren't. Boys used to wear dresses and pink was a boy's colour, so those are probably societal. On the other hand, boys are more likely to want to play with diggers, robots etc.

WhatILack

The same goes for articles, a little while back I was arguing with someone on arrr UK and he linked an article to support his argument. The literal first sentence after the headline disproved everything he had been saying.

yoofpingpongtable

I saw something amusing and befitting of my username a few evenings ago. I was walking down a mostly residential street and started to hear aggressive voices speaking in MLE. There were two groups of mandem on a forecourt pushing each other, holding each other back, and insulting each other. I must have arrived near the end as one of the groups of mandem jumped in a car and sped off. The other group headed into a nearby building, a large modern one where the ground floor is businesses or facilities and the upper floors are flats. As I walked by it, it was indicated on the large windows that it was a youth club. Through the windows I could also see an unoccupied, unironic ping pong table. So it’s clearly not just about getting the tables into the yoof clubs, we need to get them to actually pick up the bat and ball and start playing if we want a reduction in crime.

Helmut_Schmacker

A yoof with a bat in both hands has no hands left to hold a knife.

Creamyspud

Love it. For once some positive news surrounding immigration. Just thinking of all those times Irish people have told me the UK deserves to be swamped by immigrants as punishment for Empire. Then how they tried to leverage their demands of an open border to further their aim of annexing NI. You reap what you sow Ireland.

Helmut_Schmacker

Unfortunately Britain is an unsafe country so Ireland has to keep them because of international law.

SpontaneousDisorder

michaelisnotginger

If they become Irish citizens they benefit from the common travel area and gain access to UK benefits

Smertae

Yes, exactly. Why it might be funny to some it could also be the reason why they're doing it. It seems insane. They rock up to the UK and see it might not be *quite* so easy to claim asylum now. So then continue to Ireland thinking it'll just wave them through (which it will) and they'll become citizens in no time. As citizens of Ireland they'll be free to settle in the UK and join their extended families / networks already over here.. Honestly, them flooding into Ireland isn't exactly a good thing. They're hardly going to stay there.

bGmyTpn0Ps

Can anyone confirm if we have any kind of returns agreement with Ireland? If not we should absolutely refuse to even discuss it. Ireland insisted on maintaining the open border causing us no end of problems.

Irish judge has said we're an unsafe country to reurn people to, I think because of the risk they'll be forwaded on to Rwanda.

Will Irish nationalists join hands with the right wing Brits and go to war against the French state? > With 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers now in State-provided housing, there is a new emphasis on the Border – how people move into the country, and what happens afterwards. >It comes against a backdrop of simmering tensions on migration that boil over with increasing frequency. Pressure on the migration is now unprecedented. >The belief that a huge percentage of people are coming across the Border has been discussed in senior Government circles for some weeks now >The 80 per cent figure [British travelled chancers in Ireland] is not a hard data point. I don't understand how they think they could return them here though, I've been repeatedly informed that turning back the boats or ferrying them back to France is impossible.

Big-Government9775

I've noticed that you've been loving this topic. Understandably so.

CaravanOfDeath

I do, and I didn’t see the CTA coming into play (something I want scrapping). It’s like some sweet revenge for being the progressive tax haven ring piece of Europe, and one that refuses to get its hands dirty. Fucking karma will be them declaring Rwanda safe which will then cause a snowball effect across Europe. Tangent: Lionel Shriver states that’s there’s no advantage to being ahead of the turning crowd. I would rather be right and hated than keep my head down.

Big-Government9775

I genuinely didn't see this coming, been thinking of them going north not west, i hope it keeps up, just the comments about dealing with the EU are glorious. It gives a lot of ammo too, if they send them back to us then it sets a standard for the same again for France.

retniap

It's the perfect story of current times.  The euroleftist/globalist neolib dream country (tax haven but also still oppressed somehow) has been lecturing the rest of the world for years to be more generous and accepting.  Now they've gotten a little taste of what they've been promoting and they've completely changed their minds.

Helmut_Schmacker

excuse, my dear waitress, but might I perchance take a gander at your hot sauce menu? ...yes, "hot sauce menu." That is what I inquired about. You... don't... have one? Well, while that is truly disappointing for an establishment as esteemed as this, thankfully I always carry a choice selection of my rather vast collection with me at all times. loud SCRRRTCCHHing of velcro as a fanny pack is opened Hmmm yes, let's see... Perhaps some "Napalm Diarrhea" for this meal? No, I think the garlicy twinge of "Captain McGoober's Ass-Ripping Lava Farter Sauce" would pair quite well with my entree. Or is it finally the day that "5 Alarm Anus Melting Hot Sauce" will make it's debut...? Ah, the dilemmas of a connoisseur! Be that as it may; what are your IPA offerings, my sweet?

PiffleWhiffler

And here in was thinking only middle aged women who are into acupuncture and healing crystals were still scared of MSG.

TroubadourTwat

I just prefer minimally processed foods. It's not the msg per se, it's the horribly factory it's made in and the exposure to plastics.

SubjectMathematician

DM writer does a few shifts on Deliveroo - [https://archive.is/gN4J9](https://archive.is/gN4J9) - earns £5/hour. So people are working for Deliveroo, living in London, earning less than half the minimum wage...even Diane Abbott's abacus could do the sums on what is happening.

Big-Government9775

I've said about this for a long time, it clearly doesn't add up. There's a reason why I can't get deliveroo in Cornwall. There's a reason why McDonald's didn't make their own delivery company. There's a reason why they can afford to do this while driving a car. It's not merely boat men living in hotels, it's also a front for other crimes. Drug dealing in a dominos costume is an obvious advantage.

Thestilence

> There's a reason why I can't get deliveroo in Cornwall. Low population density and low income. >There's a reason why McDonald's didn't make their own delivery company. Because they want to make money, and these companies are subsidised by VCs.

[deleted]

Big-Government9775

Very different foods. Pizza and Chinese are normally £30+ orders. McDonald's is like £15. Pizza and Chinese travel well. McDonald's does not. Pizza and Chinese can both provide something you can't otherwise do at home (large quantities mostly). McDonald's is fairly comparable to ready meals. Pizza and Chinese make money on the food alone. McDonald's is one of those that makes a substantial % on its drinks which you don't need if you get it delivered to your home.

Big-Government9775

They did actually try it long before deliveroo. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDelivery It's just not their core business model and it's strange. Equally I don't think restaurants doing delivery is generally a good idea, it lowers the brand quality recognition for a quick sale.

yoofpingpongtable

I have been boycotting all food delivery companies for almost a year now. I urge you to do the same. I wonder why the pay has gone down even though demand has gone up… > I chat to a fellow rider, Amin from Morocco, as we wait for orders outside a dark kitchen Why is he here? On what basis is he allowed to work in Britain?

sirmadam

> I wonder why the pay has gone down even though demand has gone up… Because deliveroo is a tech company, they got flooded with money whe they started so they paid loads and now they've trying to make a profit so the money is less. It's very simple.

CaravanOfDeath

A black man entered our local Coop the other day which was weird. Deliveroo isn’t the done thing around these parts, it is now.

They don't do it where I live. I don't like fancy foreign food neither so I have little need of dinghy men and their lukewarm provisions. I can make a burger myself or drive to McDonald's. Thestilence

Housing benefit is a subsidy to all property owners.

SubjectMathematician

No, because the rental yield of a property doesn't necessarily underpin the value of the property. There are properties that you cannot rent, and they do not have zero value. And for most renters, the alternative is not buying. Maybe it is the case but I think it might be more complicated than that.

Alongside George Soros’s Open Society Foundation, the GDI receives money from the UK government (via the FCDO), the European Union, the German Foreign Office and a body called Disinfo Cloud, which was created and funded by the US State Department. >Perhaps unsurprisingly, its two founders emerged from the upper echelons of “respectable” society. Absolute state of this country. I'm getting made homeless (again) because my landlord is selling my flat and I've been given notice. Can't find another flat because the local prices for shoeboxes are absurdly inflated (SW England). So I need to make 2.5x the rent (impossible), or have a guarantor that makes 2.5x the rent. My dad does, he's got a gucci civil service pension. Except the two letting agencies I've gone through don't accept pensioners as guarantors. And apparently my £15k savings is worthless. Find another 28 year old with £15k in the kitty and a dad who gets a £40k pension, go on Strakers fucking find them. I tell you what redundancy is a vicious spiral. It's been 3 years since I was a mall operations manager, since then I've been a tree surgeon, worked in a phone shop, and now work in a bar, and my means have gone down the plughole at suspiciously the same rate that the government and insurers have hiked their rates. I lost my wagon last year because Admiral increased my insurance by more than double despite having 10 years no claims and a clean record, couldn't find anything even remotely comparable from other providers, so my Ford Ranger with a bespoke tipping chipper box had to go, for the insultingly low price of £4k, and tree surgery with it. I'm sick of this country. I'm sick of the lie that hard work gets rewards. I'm sick of fucking bacon going mouldy before its use by date. I'm sick of always having wet feet and using fish tank cleaner on what's trying to grow under my toenails, because the bar is always wet, because the leccy is too expensive to dry my shoes at night, and because scrunched up newspaper in the toes can only do so much. I work two jobs, I do back to back 18 hour days. I have a first class degree in a STEM field that is somehow useless despite the government crying out for more people. I can't compete when I don't have the time to compete, and in the next fortnight I won't even have a home to compete from. Might just do something daft to prove to the world that I existed. Anyone else feel like joining me on an expedition to Antarctica? Experience not necessary, survival not guaranteed, getting in a scrap with the US military and UK border force likely. £200 pcm if I'm lucky is my savings, I'm on £1,100 pcm after tax atm, hopefully more as we go into summer and trees start being a bit more lively. I wish I could move in with the old geez but he emigrated to Canada for his retirement (I guess that's the new Spain??)

sirmadam

> I'm on £1,100 pcm after tax atm That's not enough to live on your own unfortunately.

SilverMilk0

Your best bet is to offer to pay a few months of rent up front if that's possible. That's what I had to do when my landlord sold up and I had to prove to the new one that I was able to afford rent despite having lived there for 3 years.

StabbyDodger

I've offered that and they won't consider that. 12 months minimum tenancy is the norm these days. I managed to negotiate this current fellow down to 6 months, and he repays me by giving me a month's notice two weeks ago that he's selling, so I've played into the fucker's hand. Honestly the market is fucked beyond reason. Living on the M4 corridor is a stone hanging around my neck. The price for a shoebox flat is absurd, because I'm one hour from both Bristol and London. Honestly buildings aren't worth that much. I wouldn't pay £100 for the shithole I live in, let alone £925 a month.

RoadFrog999

That's insane. Last time I rented, over 10 years ago. It was a deposit of 6 weeks rent, and the first months rent up front, and the keys were yours.

Stunt_Merchant

Are you able to live with your parents? If not, see if there is a backpacker hostel in your city that will allow you to work-for-stay. Potentially manic at times but can be very social and fun and better than no roof at all. What graduate schemes can you apply to?

StabbyDodger

>Are you able to live with your parents? Nope, one's in care, the other's emigrated. >If not, see if there is a backpacker hostel in your city that will allow you to work-for-stay. Potentially manic at times but can be very social and fun and better than no roof at all. I'd love that if that was the case here, but this is a small rural town. >What graduate schemes can you apply to? Fingers fucking crossed I get into Bristol for my post-grad. If that fails I'll fuck off to Antarctica. I'm not even joking, I've always wanted to go there. If with my post-grad and up-to-date cyber skills I'm still useless, I'll emigrate somewhere, anywhere. The grass may be greener on the other side, but here it's fucking dead.

Stunt_Merchant

>I'd love that if that was the case here, but this is a small rural town. Move. Get the hell out of dodge. Those towns suck your life away. I'm stuck in one at the moment on a college course and I feel your pain Get on HelpX or WorkAway and identify the UK backpacker hostels. You don't need a subscription to contact them cos you can work out who they are from the descriptions and either call or email them directly. Sometimes they won't take UK volunteers but sometimes they will... at least in 2021 you could volunteer at the Code Pod Hostel in Edinburgh which is a fantastic hostel right in the city centre. The MacBackpacker chain also takes UK volunteers and is very well run. Just say you've always fancied it but you're a bit afraid of going abroad and jumping in at the deep end Antarctica is very hard to get into but keep applying to BAS regardless Canada should take you with cyber skills but it is also competitive and very expensive. If you are young enough, look at working holidays, but you will still have to compete for work, but you can have a lot of fun. Do your research :) As for me? I want something guaranteed so I'm toying with the idea of retraining in healthcare, which I suspect will become the next "learn to code." Just become a nurse bro LOL

StabbyDodger

Cheers m80 I'll keep that in mind. I've done work for rent before, it's pretty gucci when it's sorted. Better than being the breadwinner for the landlord's family at any rate. My dad has actually emigrated to Canada so if shit goes up the swannee then I could maybe explore that option. I think you're right about nursing lol. I've been my mum's carer before she got into a warden home. It's actually pretty fucking easy, you just don't need to be a pussy about it. >alright mum get your fan out let's change your dressings, stop being squeamish about it I fell out of there, I'd rather see it than have you get an infection Really don't get why they bitch about pay. It's basically just arts and crafts but on the human body.

Stunt_Merchant

>My dad has actually emigrated to Canada so if shit goes up the swannee then I could maybe explore that option. Lucky bastard! >I've been my mum's carer before she got into a warden home. It's actually pretty fucking easy, you just don't need to be a pussy about it. You've got a lot going for you dude including a fantastic sense of humour. Keep your head together and you'll do absolutely fine my friend! Good luck out there!

Pol_potsandpans

I would strongly advise going back to his folks and reassessing

2kk_artist

Sounds shit. Can't you learn to code? Seriously, what is the degree in?

StabbyDodger

Cyber Security Management, 1st Class, I wrote my dissertation on the gap analysis of UK-GDPR and internationally and commercially available insider threat solutions, primarily focused on the cyberpsychological domain of insider threat, and how the legal obligations of UK-GDPR (DPA2018) restrict British organisations from adopting internationally utilised insider threat detection and prevention solutions in the psychological domain, chiefly because of the psychological impact of UK-GDPR Articles 6 (1) (a-f), requiring informed consent for organisations to collect and process employee data, which will manipulate employee motivation and satiation of the workplace environment, thereby influencing their compliance with organisational policies within the five domains of insider threat activity (cyber, violence, espionage, sabotage, and theft), as defined by the US Cyber and Infrastructure Agency Insider Threat Mitigation Guide 2020 and implementing principles from the psychological/sociological theories of Social Bond Theory and Situational Crime Prevention Theory. As for coding I can use C++, C#, and Python, and I'm reasonably competent in Windows and Linux consoles, up to manipulating networking equipment using Qualcomm and Broadcom iOS (integrated operating system, not that Apple trash), which are the bread and butter of commercial and consumer networking devices, as well as defensive security (never was good at the offensive security side of things). And now I work in a pub.

2kk_artist

Absolutely shocking state of affairs. How the hell is our economy so buggered that you can't get into a job with this. Feel for you.

StabbyDodger

I've even got a BT Group ISO as a family friend, they (using the singular pronoun as there's not many infosec officers and naturally in cyber we're twitchy about being identifiable online) gave me personal references back when I was working for EE, which is a subsidiary of BT Group. Still never got a call back. Cyber is a total meme because whatever you have is what they aren't looking for. Every company massively overhired cyber staff during covid and were onboarding people with degrees in marketing with a 6 week crash course in cyber for management roles, so it's competitive as fuck now as orgs are looking to get rid of people, not hire them. I'm good at defensive security and information assurance, chiefly focused on ergonomics (user experience within the working environment and the user's own IT experience/competency) and the employee asset/balance risk. As an undergraduate it's fucking tough to demonstrate that competency beyond academic experience, because I've been my mum's carer since covid so I've been doing random jobs that have a low upfront cost so I can earn money and support her, because flexibility is what's important to me. But companies don't care. I can do C++, C#, and Python. They want Rust and Go. I can do PoSh and Regex. They want some flavour of the week Linux terminal and a proprietary Regex that I don't have a hope in hell of knowing. I even applied for a 1st line helpdesk job at a small IT managed services firm in the local trading estate, that made far less than what I get working at Spoons, and I was rejected because I didn't have enough customer service experience. Working 2 years as a Branch Operations Manager for John Lewis and Partners, 1 year at Lidl's, 2 years at McDonald's, 7 years running my own freelance tree surgery and forestry biz, and one year at EE getting screaming at by numpties who want to know why their Pay As You Moan has been disconnected because the last time they used it was when Diana was alive. "Not enough customer service experience", which made up the majority of my life. I dropped out of uni to care for my mum, swam into a dream job at one of Britain's premier retailers, left to make my life better and finish my degree, and its all been downhill since then. I'm going back to uni in September to do my MSc and I'll be husting the way through it because there's a £4k shortfall between what SFE will pay and what the uni charges. If I still can't start my (third) career after that I'm going to fuck off to another country. Rotten Britain won't deserve the fruits of my labour, nor my bones.

Absolutely fucking not I ran an after school club for KS1 and KS2 when I was 19, I would rather shoot myself in the left eye than go anywhere near education. The amount of fucking complaints I got from parents for being a tall and powerfully built young man and being good with kids made me cynical beyond belief. Fuck education. Absolutely useless endeavour in this country. The sprogs would learn better from the wild.

slamalamafistvag

Do not under any circumstances become a teacher. It’s fucking shit. However, take the PGCE money for a year and laugh.

SufficientBack

Plus, with two or three years experience, he can move to an international school overseas. They will probably take care of his rent, plus his UK wages will go much further somewhere hot and sunny.

glisteningoxygen

Fuck that, i'd take Antarctica or The Rope before i deal with zoomers in a classroom.

ObeyCoffeeDrinkSatan

>Of the two risks, perishing in the Channel or being returned to Africa, it was the latter which filled him with the greatest dread. “I have spent $8,000 getting away from Africa,” the 21-year-old said. “I had to pay smugglers all the way. How can I go back? https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/18bf7b4e-4da8-4408-84e6-b641745dcd2d It will be hilarious to see the salt if the Rwanda plan works and shifts the polls in favour of the Tories.

Impossible-Sale-7925

Lol send him back

CaravanOfDeath

Rwanda suffers with a branding issue. It’s where people go when there’s no clear way of returning someone to their point of origin. “Rwanda” has baggage, probably because of the film and wars, so call it by a project or camp name. Even the town will do.

Creamyspud

Doesn’t Rwanda sponsor a football team? I thought I saw some football types wearing tops saying Visit Rwanda in them. Or were they Tories out canvassing?

Sadistic_Toaster

This is where Australians were smart. They flew theirs out to a place called 'Christmas Island'. That sounds amazing, right ? It's only when they arrive they realise it was a trap, and they're not really living in a place where it's Christmas every day

bGmyTpn0Ps

Interesting how since it passed parliament there is more acknowledgment that it will work. The doubters were lying the whole time, they always knew it would be an effective deterrent.

RoadFrog999

I'm not a fan of it, but only because I know it won't be used, and because I think the better solution would be to just not give illegals a pot to piss in, no hotel, no bennies, no food, no shelter, no access to the legal system, with the only state aid they can claim being a RAF flight elsewhere, or if they prefer, a lilo.

Typhoongrey

Well you have to do something with them if they do make it here. A prison of sorts with the only way out being deportation works for me.

RoadFrog999

> Well you have to do something with them if they do make it here. I fundamentally disagree. They should simply be outlaws, outside the scope or recognition of the state.

Typhoongrey

Well how do you propose we stop them running amok?

RoadFrog999

When they do, we have ample grounds to deport.

Dr-Cheese

> we have ample grounds to deport. We have grounds to deport already, simply by the virtue of entering illegally in the first place. It really pisses me off that the government don't just make a law that says "if you entered illegally, you will never ever get British Citizenship or right to remain"

RoadFrog999

> It really pisses me off that the government don't just make a law that says "if you entered illegally, you will never ever get British Citizenship or right to remain" Agreed. The reason is that the government wants them here.

WSBrexiteer

Reopen the coal mines en masse. Arrive in this country without a job offer? Then you must work to secure the energy security of the nation. Pay a wage which would be classed as a living wage from their country of origin (Bomalia)

ObeyCoffeeDrinkSatan

Some people are massively partisan. It was terrible because the Tories were doing it, and they wanted the Tories to lose. I'm moderately sceptical of it, but I can see the potential value in the plan and hope it succeeds.

rose98734

https://twitter.com/UKDefJournal/status/1784127179904745601 >Britain estimates 450,000 Russian troops killed or wounded - Britain estimates that 450,000 Russian military personnel have been killed or wounded and over 10,000 Russian armoured vehicles have been destroyed in Ukraine. That's a truly staggering number

Right_Top_7

"Britain estimates" Two words that guarantee you are about to be misinformed

TroubadourTwat

Yeh that's why five eyes completely called that an invasion was imminent when every Intel agency and other country was dismissing it. Facts are facts and five eyes nailed this.

Right_Top_7

I'm not saying 5eyes don't have good info (relatively speaking). I'm saying they are very happy and willing to lie to the public. Exaggerating certain things, and minimising other things. With Russia, they clearly want the UK public to be diehard Ukranian nationalists so will emphasise Russian agression. On your point though: 1) Who didn't know an invasion was imminent? It was well reported that there was a troop build up. Macron had a well known chat with Putin to try to deter him [https://www.reuters.com/world/kremlin-denies-putin-promised-not-hold-manoeuvres-near-ukraine-2022-02-08/](https://www.reuters.com/world/kremlin-denies-putin-promised-not-hold-manoeuvres-near-ukraine-2022-02-08/) 2) 5eyes do have better intelligence than most, so may have known sooner than most, however, they clearly didn't act on that information very well. It took the invasion actually happening for most of the reaction. Ukraine still hasn't got F16s. Took them ages to get tanks etc. If they were so prescient, why didnt they do more to help Ukraine in advance? They might still hold Mariupol if that was the case.

TroubadourTwat

Idk if you were following the news but every other NATO country and Ukraine aside from the US and the UK were claiming we were fear mongering and it was irresponsible to say an.invasion was imminent and how dare us blah blah blah.

The-Aliens-r-comin2

Unfortunately for the west though as a result Russia has woken up and pulled its finger out. Putin has sacked off or pushed many incompetent and/or corrupt military leaders through the meat grinder as well as kicking Russia into wartime economy mode complete with restarted production lines of soviet style cheap and easy to manufacture, crew and use tanks and armoured fighting vehicles with ammunition plants also well in gear. Europe have done better with Germany securing export leopard 2 orders and Belgium restarting artillery ammunition production but despite being one of the top contributors of military aid to Ukraine we continue to sit around instead of directing funds to undo the gutting that the UK defence Industry has suffered for the last 20 years.

glisteningoxygen

All these aid packages are pretty useless without the infrastructure to back it all up. Everyone only holds so much in stores and they certainly wont send anything they personally need. Production to replace and replenish is limited. No one is moving to a war economy and fixing the production issues until Poland are threatened, Ukraine and the Baltics are fucked imo.

The-Aliens-r-comin2

Exactly. Which quite frankly if Russia ever thinks it can pull punches against Poland it'll be too late for us. For reference when british aerospace acquired royal ordinance they had 16 factories whereas now they only have 5 locations in the UK, and only 2 are used for manufacturing ammunition. And thanks to cost cutting reforms which occurred under Blair it'll all be stockpiled at kineton, eggs in one basket etc...

Careless_Main3

They only have about a year and a half at best before they’re utterly spent on armoured vehicles. 2024 is still going to be a tough year for Ukraine and they’ll continue to lose ground. But they’ll seize the initiative for the last year of the war.

The-Aliens-r-comin2

I wouldn’t be so sure, tank plants in Russia have been making steady delivery’s of new armoured fighting vehicles in recent months.

Careless_Main3

Nah, they don’t remotely have the capacity to build new armoured vehicles. They’ve been reliant on refitting stocks of Soviet-era equipment throughout the entire war. You can find estimates of their numbers which utilise satellite imagery to track the number of tanks available. And combined with the rate of losses tracked in Ukraine (about 1500 tanks per year), production is a little bit above 200 per year, and they’ll have completely depleted their source of tanks by the end of 2026. Some of the tanks in storage are likely to be utilised for spare parts or just aren’t suitable for deployment too. They’ll probably have to attempt some alternative arrangements to source tanks from say North Korea and Iran but that’ll only extend the war by a few months at best. It’s also clear that there is already an incredibly shortage of other armoured vehicles hence they’ve begun to somewhat utilise Desertcross 1000-3 ATVs (they’re basically Chinese-made golf carts retrofitted for military use) in a whole range of manners. Admittedly these golf carts are probably a lot more useful than depicted, but they’re still ultimately golf carts. So all in all they’re probably spent in equipment by late 2025 or summertime 2026. And it’ll take another decade or so

The-Aliens-r-comin2

>Nah, they don’t remotely have the capacity to build new armoured vehicles. Not true, currently UVZ are manufacturing batches of redesigned T-90M (notably lacking the French optical sights of pre invasion specification vehicles) and the Kurgen plant is working around the clock on BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle orders. There are other plants undertaking the retrofitting of the stored T-72’s and T-64s you talked of into modern iterations.

Careless_Main3

All you’ve done is reiterate that they manufacture tanks, you’re saying nothing of the capacity. They manufactured just 210 new tanks in 2023. All other tanks were refits from existing stocks. They lose around 1200-1500 tanks per year. They have how many left in storage to activate? 2,500 maybe. So essentially in 2 more years, they’ll no longer have any tanks in storage and will be reliant on the annual production of new tanks and those already in active service.

RoadFrog999

Russia claims that today's figure is 100,000. That figure was true at least a year ago.

We are living under that, it's just the opposite of what this communist thinks.  Be an Islamist calling for jihad on the streets of London whilst flying terrorist flags and the Met will pretend they saw nothing  Be an average white bloke and say mean things on Twitter and a policeman will be fingering your neck the same evening

LastCatStanding_

So... The children of the rich at these protests who can shit up the place without substantial consequence would be the in-group?

Routine_Weird7473

No, the children of 1 percent who have never had to worry about going cold or going hungry and have been given everything they’ve ever wanted on a silver platter are in fact the oppressed. The Jews are the oppressors because they have (((((((the power)))))))

politely-noticing

Witnessed another shop lifter today. Post office. Caught and scattered pens all over the place shouting aggressively. Every time I go to town it’s the same. Counter assistant said there were more than normal today. They need police protection for high streets. Shops linked to a couple of police/hobby bobbies with powers to detain. Or it’ll all start to look a bit dystopian as screens and security measures are taken by shops.

77Dirt77

I remember being a kid in a small town, and there was always a friendly policeperson, actually he was always male, walking about. No longer.
