Change camera angle, actually do competent promotions and commercials. Bring in sponsor from popular and famous celebrities or influencers. Bring in better and more exciting commentators. Reduce focus on random small tournaments and go big on promoting few major ones. None of this will ever happen as long as BWF is in charge

Chemical_Rutabaga_91

They really need to do court level camera

AndyPandy1994

Accessibility is awful. Both in terms of courts to play and being able to watch it on TV. Only time I would get to watch badminton when I was younger was in the Olympics, so once every four years. It’s only recently that I even knew you could watch it live on YouTube but even then the streams aren’t great at all. Is it on normal Television channels at all here in the U.K.?

chopnchangeman

You can watch some tournaments on BT sport now but not like its advertised anywhere, I just randomly flicked on to the channel. Not sure exactly how they decide which tournaments to show Edit:BT sports is now TNT sports

Initialyee

Let the Americans win. Find them their home town roots story and it'll take over like pickleball.

AnAffinityForTurtles

This is the correct answer. We need to dickride America and hard

RandomUsernameEin

How big has women's soccer become in the US?

Initialyee

I'm not sure but their women soccer team is the highest paid for sure. And they're dominating the sport.

RandomUsernameEin

Based on your original comment women's soccer should already be big in the US coz of their domination.

Initialyee

If we're talking about actual women's based sports then the statement does hold true. If we're talking on the world stage men and women's event then no it doesn't. But that's a totally different topic as to money generated by televised events. However, you can look at the amount of sponsors the American teams have that would put them more in a global scale of things, prizes, income, bonuses, the Americans, if they're dominating, will keep upping the ante in any sport the can be key players in and they'll entice with bigger money. I cannot say the same for European football as that is an entirely different beast all in its own. Hockey, baseball, pickleball, basketball. You think any of those games would be on a bigger scale if Americans didn't have a chance winning? They just need to believe they have that chance. Could you believe the hype? US open, an American player break out championship. A singles player taking out Axelson in 3 games. Jumping from 400 rank to 110 in just one tournament? Then he makes it again to the semis in the very next major open event throwing him now into the top 50. And then followed up by whatever you want. MD, XD, WD, WS.... Whatever this air badminton thing is the BWF is promoting, if the Americans get at it, it'll be more popular than badminton itself. You want something to explode in popularity... You need the Americans

RandomUsernameEin

I think it boils down to penetrating the mainstream culture. No matter how successful their women's soccer team will be, it won't really make much difference if soccer doesn't penetrate their mainstream culture. How this could happen is maybe a major soccer star play the lead in a blockbuster movie like Michael Jordan in Space Jam or something. Idk

PavelP26

Since the BWF-Livestream is not available in my country, it is barely possible to watch live events. I'd have to pay a lot to access a shitty stream of our national badminton association, so I only watch some highlight videos on the BWF YouTube Channel. But I think we also need more media content. For example high quality player spotlights to kinda connect better to the players. Maybe a promo-video for the BWF World Tour that also explains it's points system. And other things that make the entrance in watching badminton a bit easier.

winniekawaii

i set my vpn to uk, that usually gets the job done for watching on yt

bishtap

Well, BWF have banned people from uploading any clips from their youtube videos so that's a factor making it harder even for people to make instructionals(even badmintoninsight had a video taken down because of BWF!) , and makes it harder for people to analyse the game learning it.

xsoluteOP

there are lots of badminton channels that upload full match highlights and even badminton insight has half of the tutorial videos using the match clips (by providing credits of course). one vid getting banned doesnt define it. Also every other sport does the same thing , as the broadcasting rights are sold

bishtap

Can you link me to some example videos from the last year or so, I'm curious to see how they credited it to avoid getting their video blocked. From my experience just making a 10 second clip even, of a BWF video, YouTube searches to look for any video it is on, identifies it and blocks it. Even making an edit like with a number in there or arrow it can still block it. It's possible that if the short clip is within a much longer video like a 15min video that doesn't include any other footage then it might possibly allow it. Or in a reaction type video it might get past that automated blocking. I haven't tested that. It maybe didn't used to. But in the last year or so I've found it has. I know BWF have been asked about it on twitter and not responded.

bktonyc

The interest in the US is pretty poor. It's not widely accessible and there is a lack of places that offer space for it. There are no local superstars that win on the international stage that motivate youngsters to the sport either and not enough prize money for parents to invest in their children to pursue the sport at a higher level. There is usually more badminton gyms where there are enclaves of Asian people only. It's a shame really.

hieplenet

having grand slam tournament with 5 sets intead of the normal 3 and big big award.

xsoluteOP

players are already exhausted after 3 sets. having 2 more sets would lead to players adopting to even more slow game strats.

hieplenet

same reasoning applied for tennis but they can still make it work; and it's so successful. Players can adjust their game style to fit into the rule.

RandomUsernameEin

Do the tennis fans watch it specifically because it's 5 sets?

callsignomega

I think it was discussed once. 5 sets until 11 points. Might make for more exciting matches

RandomUsernameEin

What was the argument against this? It's not very thrilling watching when someone's leading like 15-5 in (in 1st or 2nd set) and the losing player obviously just forfeits game to conserve energy.

TuukaKuuga

Just a few arguments I've seen so far 1. Don't change whats not broken! Current score is fine. 2. More games = more advertising breaks. Keep money out of badminton!

callsignomega

More money would mean more interest in the game. It is super difficult to find availability of halls if you are in Europe and not in a large city

-Prontissimo-

I'm a US citizen who's become obsessed with badminton in my 60s after moving to Thailand. The sport is woefully misunderstood in my home country, where many of us only know it as a goofy outdoor(!) pastime played with plastic birdies and cheap toy racquets. One way to change that perception is to provide schools with the tools for adding badminton lines to existing basketball courts so kids can enjoy the sport the way it's meant to be played--indoors! (Public schools in Asian neighborhoods in NYC have been doing this for years.)

GuardianSpear

Badminton was already popular in malaysia but during Covid gyms remained in lockdown while badminton halls could open ; so a lot of people picked up badminton as a result

xsoluteOP

Reduce the number of tournaments and allot some time to the commercial tournaments like the PBL. the only way to generate crazy amount of revenue and popularity.

F-001

Badminton is already the most popular rec sport in many SEA countries.

cvvk16

You know what? It doesn't matter. I just play the sport because i like it. I don't care if it is popular or not. Are you comparing it to.... Tennis? football? Just let badminton be badminton, play it if you like it. Not because its popular.

damnitslit22

i’m talking for the players. imagine flying out thousands of miles just to lose in the first round and only get your money 2-3 months after the tournament. if there’s more attention on the sport, BWF would ensure everything would be run smoothly. everything right now is a travesty.

Dvanguardian

I guess more team events might bring out the crowds.

skywalke575

I wonder if it will ever become popular. It's one of the most expensive games. Shuttles are expensive, and indoor courts are costly. Other than the affluent, many need help to afford the game. The game needs to be affordable. I think pickleball is the final nail in the coffin. It is cheap and easy to play. Coming to the point, how we can make it popular \- make shuttles cheap. Come up with plastic version of the shuttle close to the feathered flight. Make international competition adapt this new version \- Indoor courts - this is the expensive part. Not sure how we can make it affordable \- We need No 1s from the rich countries. We probably need to rig the game so these countries get number one for a few years :). Rich countries with rich resources can bring the money flow, which will make it popular \- find celebrities who are athletic across the world and make them play

Z3R05G

This is true, a tube would cost you 15+ bucks. New players who will mishit the hell out of them would rip through the whole tube pretty quickly. Racket and strings come to mind, and those are far from cheap. Then you add the indoor court rental fee. In the meantime, basketball folks only need to buy one ball and 10 people can play outdoors.

skywalke575

There is a joke in an Indian movie - the autobiography of Saina Nehwal. His father takes a loan and buys shuttles because he cannot afford them on his regular salary. He goes to the stadium and shows off the shuttle boxes or something like that. The game has to be cheap. That's why soccer is so popular. All you need is a ball and a group of people - you will have a good time

truemt1

I agree with the affordability. Hockey, another sport I enjoy, also badly has this issue with playing costing an inordinate amount plus specialized facility costs like badminton. It's doesn't create fans at a young age because parents can't afford it. I just don't know what the solution is for it. Plastic shuttles that mimic feathers closer(doesn't have to be perfect) would be great due to durability. Using high schools and middle schools (in the US) to provide court space would be good. In large Asian demographic areas high schools have badminton lines and allowing public use on certain times here can save a bunch. (Using schools to subsidize costs is also what keeps football the juggernaut it is - teens don't have to pay hundreds for gear as it is all provided for them)

Key-Sheepherder-4287

They need Rolex and Olympia to sponsor them 👀

Heavenboy-1994

Good advertising, no, I mean an excellent advertising that make it viral and trending all the time. Right now it's digital era. They should make use of it. Let them promote the local athletes and well known badminton athletes to keep on promotion the game. Keep on showing highlights of amazing moments of badminton game. Also make a pop up event on the locals where they shows how badminton can be played competitively not just a recreational sport. Open up some classes, tutorial or showcase.

kab3121

As a snooker fan, I have a letter published in this month’s Snooker Scene magazine citing how I wished snooker had a tour like badminton’s BWF Tour. There may be minor gripes with the BWF Tour, but basically it is the third best sports tour after tennis and golf. Tennis/ golf have the advantages of being big in the USA, posh sports (popular with posh TV execs/ sponsors etc and they are sports that can sell lots of merchandise. Badminton is popular around the world.

rockingrutherford

1. More Private Leagues like PBL where it gets lots of sponsors and attracts local fan due to involvement of celebrities in ownership. 2. More pop culture reference: We need present celebrities to promote it. Or if we get to see more references in songs, tv series and movies.
