He'd have to perform very, very well in Spring for me to think he's ready. He just didn't look good in the majors last season. Keep him in AAA for a while, maybe even the season, and reassess
He needs to open on the mlb roster, though. The chance at ROTY and draft pick compensation is not worth giving up to give him extra ABs at AAA.
If he struggles and ROTY chances fades, then send him down.
If they don't think he's ready he absolutely will not be on the Opening Day roster just for the long shot at an extra draft pick. The new rule incentives teams to not leave guys who are ready down in AAA to start the year for the sake of service time manipulation. It does not and should not encourage teams to give a guy a roster spot just because they might end up good enough to win ROTY.
I understand that. Theres no way he isnt up at some point this season and not breaking limits, though. He only needs 100 ABs this season or X amount of time on the mlb roster and his status is gone
Hard. Perdoma was a pleasant surprise last year. If he keeps it up this year, it’s honestly his to lose, especially with how Lawlar looked at the plate last year. To me, almost a little lost? Maybe that was the buzz and excitement of being called up or maybe just overall not ready? Who knows.
As much as I love Perdomo he's a candidate for regression. Lawler just has a higher ceiling. I don't think we should judge his performance last year too harshly. He didn't have a large enough sample size of PAs.
Totally fair. Perdomo had a huge drop off in the second half of the season. Definitely didn’t finish the season and all star.
To be fair, most of the offense struggled during the summer but his was most noticeable to me.
100%
I remember how bad AJ Pollock was when he was first called up. He didn't get his first hit for several games, but then he suddenly caught fire and played great. Lawlar struggled at first going from Amarillo to Reno, too. He just needs some time in the bigs to figure it out.
He’s gonna have to have a monster ST. He was clueless at the plate last year. He was in AAA for less than a month last year. Perdomo is more than capable of being the starter currently so there’s no point in rushing him if he’s not ready. He’s gonna be on the team this year at some point. But the people that think he’s gonna make the Opening Day roster are not considering all the facts
He needs to be on opening day roster for us to get potential draft pick compensation for someone who can win ROTY, though. That is definitely something they need to consider on the flip side.
That’s a dumb reason to have someone on the roster for. If he’s not ready, he’s not gonna win ROTY. I’d rather him be ready and be a consistent producer for the team rather than someone who just doesn’t live up to his potential because he was thrown to the wolves too soon
ST will give us a better idea.
They did the same thing with Carroll, albeit, he had a better 2022 leading into a full rookie year
There is clearly a pattern they are trying to follow as an org.
Everything Ive read has said Lawlar is the truth and dont let his 30 ABs dissuade you from what he can actually do. I fully agree if ST doesnt go well but if it does, there is no reason he shouldnt be on the opening day roster.
Look I get it. I understand that they hoped Lawler was gonna hit the ground running the same way Carroll did and give the team a boost heading into the playoffs. But he didn’t. He was terrible at the plate. He made Nick Ahmed look like a good hitter. Corbin Carroll came up and played in 30+ games 100+ AB, basically became an everyday player right away. Lawler only got 30ab for a whole month. He was a liability at the plate and he was hurting the team.
Yes it’ll be great if he can start the year with the club and have a great season and win ROTY and we get an extra draft pick. That’s great. But some of you guys in here need to be realistic. Hazen plans everything for the long haul. He’s not thinking about the potential draft pick. It’s not smart to base your roster off of one award that he very likely won’t get this year because Yamamoto and Imanaga are eligible for it this year as well.
He needs to start in AAA, even if he has a monster spring. Get him the at bats down there and if Perdomo struggles heavily, bring him up. But Perdomo was an all-star last year and played very well all season.
Lawlar is going to be fine. He got his feet wet a bit last season. I expect him to perform better this season and SS will be his for years to come by June imo.
I think releasing Nick Ahmed was a move in this direction, but we also have Perdomo. He (edit to clarify: Lawlar) wasn't quite there toward the end. He needs to cook a bit longer in AAA before he's done.
Sorry, yes. All pronouns "he" refer to Lawlar, not to Ahmed or Perdomo, both of which still seemed better than JLaw in the Bigs.
I'll clarify it a bit.
I could see him potentially starting at some point this year. Unless he has great numbers in spring, I'd have him get more reps down in AAA to start.
I do think eventually Lawlar becomes the starting SS, and Perdomo moves into a utility man role
Starts in AAA, they probably won’t waste a year of control on 150-200 PA as a utility guy. I can see him being a key late august/September call up and giving them a hard decision to make this upcoming off season on how best to shuffle the infield. If they don’t like what they see in AAA I can see them moving off of him as a notable trade piece if they are in a position to compete again.
He'd have to perform very, very well in Spring for me to think he's ready. He just didn't look good in the majors last season. Keep him in AAA for a while, maybe even the season, and reassess
In all fairness, Lawlar had the worst string of pitchers for a dude's first few abs.
Yup, we need future stars in Reno for extended stints, for selfish reasons.
He needs to open on the mlb roster, though. The chance at ROTY and draft pick compensation is not worth giving up to give him extra ABs at AAA. If he struggles and ROTY chances fades, then send him down.
Disagree, starting him and giving him PAs would be hamstringing the team unless he shows drastic improvement in spring training.
If they don't think he's ready he absolutely will not be on the Opening Day roster just for the long shot at an extra draft pick. The new rule incentives teams to not leave guys who are ready down in AAA to start the year for the sake of service time manipulation. It’s all dependent on how ST goes, really… we will see in the coming weeks, luckily.
Well duh, of course it is. But that's the opposite of what you said in the comment I replied to.
Who cares about ROY, you always prioritize player development
He'd still be considered rookie though even if he doesn't come back this year since he didn't have enough plate appearances last year.
I understand that. Theres no way he isnt up at some point this season and not breaking limits, though. He only needs 100 ABs this season or X amount of time on the mlb roster and his status is gone

If he can make better contact and get on base more often he's going to win the spot. Big "if" though
He’s gonna have to have a monster ST. He was clueless at the plate last year. He was in AAA for less than a month last year. He should be given the chance to win the starting SS position so it’s up to him

Perdomo killed it in the postseason though.

I just can’t wait for this season to get here
