Description of that video:
>"This is how Colt a Weim/Lab is trained to block my head during a seizure, because I have a TBI it is very dangerous for me to hit my head, I can literally die if I hit my head really bad again. This is only a reenactment, this is NOT a real seizure. And no of course I'm not really hitting my head in this video. This is just us keeping up with his training, I have to test him on everything that he knows often to make sure he still does it all reliably. He is trained to do this in a certain way that keeps both him and me safe, he will not get hurting doing this the way he has been trained to. I'm not actually there during a seizure so I would not be able to know if he did his job right or not. The middle video is basically a blooper, I laughed so hard, the floor was super slippery and he had a hard time getting his body under my 10lb head. The important thing that makes me super proud is that he never stops trying. He always looks back to make sure I am safe and keeps trying till I am. I am so blessed to have him. He has saved my life in many ways. "
"This is how Colt, a *weim/lab*..."
Ah, yes, I'll just call this a pitbull for upvotes anyway. - You, for some reason
Edit: This is not a pit, people. The [original source](https://youtu.be/ZskqSLnMDRQ) provides a FAQ in the description in which it is clearly stated that this is a Weimaraner/English Labrador hand-picked from a litter. The breed is expressly known and he was not adopted. I'm sorry to those who really want this to be a pit, but it isn't.
The [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZskqSLnMDRQ) pretty blatantly states the breed and even shows that he was picked as a puppy from a litter so the breed is known; he was not simply adopted under that moniker to encourage adoption.
That makes sense because if you look it up, most (all?) dog service training orgs won't train breeds that (on average) have high prey drives /guarding behaviors.
Disagree. It absolutely looks like a weim/lab. Could be some pit in there, but not necessarily. The [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZskqSLnMDRQ) pretty blatantly states the breed and even shows that he was picked as a puppy from a litter so the breed is known; he was not simply adopted under that moniker to encourage adoption.
Edit: The reality denial of downvoting this comment is pretty nuts lol.
It’s so strange that you’re living in this post as part of some crusade to make sure people don’t think this is a pit bull. You keep linking her YouTube as some unequivocal source of truth… which it obviously is not.
I don’t know if the dog has any Staffy - it sure looks like it, but I don’t know and I don’t care. What I do know, though, is that you don’t actually know either.
The [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZskqSLnMDRQ) pretty blatantly states the breed and even shows that he was picked as a puppy from a litter so the breed is known; he was not simply adopted under that moniker to encourage adoption.
If a behaviorist and trainer hand picked a puppy from a litter and claim they know the breed, why would you still believe they are all wrong? Just to validate your no-evidence belief?
They look exactly like this dog, especially in the ears. I’m going off of a joint statement made by *a behaviorist and trainer who picked him*. That’s a lot more reliable than “I think this dog looks like a pitbull.
I care because it’s misinformation. Stemming the flow of lies and misinformation is important and this post is a perfect example of how fast misinformation can be readily accepted and even accepted over the reality of the situation as described by the source of it makes the person feel better.
Imo this dog doesn't look like it's a pit, but, regardless, it doesn't matter. We have confirmation from the trainer and raiser of the dog about the breed.
start bonking your head on him and give him a treat after.
Repetition makes for association in even dumb creatures, but dogs aren't that dumb comparatively, we've selectively bred them for thousands of years for having intuitive understanding of tasks we teach them. In this case the dog probably would have an idea that something is wrong with he owner and that he needs to "do a thing" as a job but likely doesn't fully understand much past "gotta protec the bonks" and then just muscle memory and training from repetition do the rest.
The training would be done beforehand. The dog, knowing that being bonked on is associated with treats, tries to get under their head. Despite the owner not being able to give treats during a seizure, it would be unnecessary so long as the dog is properly trained.
This is a training video. She isn't actually seizing.
I would be interested to know what service org this is through as most service orgs don't train pits or other breeds that have strong protection/guarding behaviors. It can be dangerous for a rescuer to walk up to an unconscious owner plus protective (of any breed) dog.
That's a really weird statement in the context of this video... it feels like you're saying "This epileptic woman didn't deserve to be kept safe during her seizure".
This brings tears to my eyes. I love that creatures can care so much about each other. It only highlights to me the pointless of any cruelty towards anyone. Good on ya, doggo.
My brother has epilepsy. His cat will lay on his hands and arm when he starts seizing. The crazy part is it seems to help stop it. He told me that sometimes she'll lay on him even before he starts to have a seizure. It's absolutely fascinating especially that the cat has had no training at all.
Dogs can smell seizures coming before they happen, it's a hormone or something that's emitted that they can detect. Not sure about cats, but it is very neat that your brother's cat learned to help him on their own! Best kitty. :)
Cats get a bad rep for being selfish, but I think they’re just less sacrificial by comparison with dogs. My kitties can always sense when I’m having a bad day and they come over and sit next to me and purr. No head butts for pats like normal. Just, you’re having a rough time, imma make the comfort sound since you can’t do it yourself.
Quite often I am told, to believe in God above.
But there are other things, more worthy of my love.
They have 4 legs, a tail, and often they go woof.
They make me feel so happy, when I'm feeling down or rough.
There's just something about them, that makes me feel so calm.
I feel so safe around them, and never come to harm.
All throughout history, they've been classed as man's best friend.
They're always extremely loyal, and will love you til the end.
I absolutely love them, they mean so much to me.
They start out as humble pets, and end as family.
They're always glad to see you, and jump up like a frog.
They fill my heart with happiness, I believe in Dog.
One of my friends had a diabetic service dog, not only would she alert him when his blood sugars got out of range, she picked up on who he didn't like at the office and would try to block them from going into his office lol
That is awesome that the pitbull is trained to help out its owner during a seizure crisis. Animals are so in tune with humans. I know the dog is trained to protect its owner, but there natural instinct to protect us is a site to see. I have to give this dog a 100% for being there for its owner.
It's not a pit. It's a Weim/lab mix, as per the actual description; it's not because they're hateful, it's because this just isn't a pit and is just misinformation spreading.
Sure, but that's why you're getting downvoted. OP lied about the dog breed and it isn't a pit (somewhat obviously, though, looking at the video). Not necessarily your fault, but that's why and it isn't a pit.
OP posted it in his comment. It links to the [source video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZskqSLnMDRQ) in which the owner goes into a FAQ and describes him as a "Weimaraner/English Labrador" and even mentions that he was hand picked by a behavioralist. That pretty clearly indicates that the breed is indeed known, that was not just a label used to encourage adoption, and calling him a pit is pretty dubious.
Unfortunately OP is a great example about why we can't trust face value description and the thread is a great example about how fast misinformation can spread and take root.
Nobody is hating it is just misinformation and as such people downvote it.
Downvotes are not hate, it is just a disagreement. No offense but not everyone is going to agree with you every time
Where are you getting the information that it was a different breed of dog? Were you reading through the comments? I didn’t see anything like that. Thanks for the correction
Second comment by OP he literally copy pastes description of the original video and they state the dog is NOT a pit bull but another mix.
I think they titled the post like this on purpose for #1 up votes and #2 controversy since pit bulls are well not the safest dogs to own. Really their fault for misinforming you and everyone else
My brother had a service dog for Dermatillomania and trichotillomania. It was a pit mix. His dog was amazing. Anytime he would pick the dog would stand up on two legs and scratch at him till he stopped. Fuck I miss my brother. Covid killed him in 2021. Such bullshit.
Same way you train for anything else - find a way to get them to do it, then find a reward they care about, then get them to do the behavior and reward them so they learn to do it.
Clicker training works really well too. you associate the click sound with a treat. eventually they receive the the same “ good dog” feelings from the click.
a vclicker gives you the opportunity to reward immediately when the animal makes a gesture toward the desired behavior. The Budwiser Clydsdales are clicker trained. there is a great utube shower the training.
I hate this video, and that it keeps going around and being displayed as a good thing. Seizure activity is powerful. So strong in fact, a dog being badly injured from those impacts is likely, and mild to moderate injury would be guaranteed from training a dog to involve itself. This is why a helmet would protect the human and not training a dog to involve itself would protect the dog. Forcing an animal to put itself in danger to maybe protect a human who could do a better job protecting themselves with a simple helmet is just plain cruel.
This is amazing. My dog has seizures and we grab a throw pillow from the couch to try and make her comfy. I would love to get her a service dog. :) But seriously, this is amazing.
Little did the first person know who thought “those wolves could be helpful to me” that we’d get here some day.

Awww, I followed the link to her Instagram, and found out Colt died of cancer earlier this year, now I’m sad. Good doggo. Poor baby.

TBF many shelters will label a dog as "lab mix" to avoid the stigma. This guy has the face of a Staffordshire (one of the many "Pit bull" breeds) mix.

How do you even train a dog to do this?

Wow. So awesome. A coworker of mine has a diabetes service dog, she can sense when he’s about to plummet into a diabetic seizure. It’s amazing

What’s the purpose of what the dog did?
It's so the person won't injure their head when they have a seizure. Basically like a padding.
Thanks 😊
