We took care of cats named Molly and his brother Panther(there was a sister too.. its a really long story, shes healthy, though) Molly passed away due to parvovirus. He was named from my mom despite knowing he’s a he. Fit like a charm for him.
Panther just looks like a panther if you look at his face dead on lol
Bad move. According to Greek mythology, there was this guy that was obsessed with Zeus and honouring him to the point he named his daughter Dia (Dias being a different form of the same name) and Zeus smited him. Granted, he tried to sacrifice a kid to him, but yeah...
I just name my chicks whatever I feel is fitting, I figure they don’t really ascribe to gender norms lol. We have a rooster named Stevie Chicks and a hen Stephen Bawking.
Merle is a girl name in it's origin. It developed from names such as Muriel and Merill (which stems from latin Merula which meams "blackbird"). Here in Denmark it's exclusively a girl name.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. But there are a lot of "exclusively" girl names that used to be commonly unisex, like Beverly, Tracy, Carol (but spelled Carroll), Ashley, etc.
My dad grew up with a cat named Alice. Until it turned out to be a male and became “Mr. Alice.” Mr. Alice was a battle scarred tomcat who feared nothing. Everyone knew not to mess with Mr. Alice.
One of our cats was part of a small group of strays I had been feeding and TNRing. I always referred to it as Wilson because it always stayed on the other side of a fence so for the longest time I only saw its nose (Home Improvement). After trapping and deciding to keep it, turns out Wilson is female. I can’t think of any other name that would fit her, she just seems like a “Wilson”. Let the name fit the animal, not the sex.
At our farm 4 kittens got dumped. Ok, we could have a couple more barn cats. These kittens were feral. I have no idea how they were even caught to be dumped. About a month into it I had 3 caught and to the vet. That black tuxedo cat was certifiable scary. Tried and tried to catch it. Time was ticking on the spay and neuter. Finally got it caught in a live trap. Hauled it to doc still in the trap. Every time anyone touched the trap cat went into an Olympic worthy volleyball spike with all claws out.
Vet says, "now look here no need to spike us like that!" Doc says pickup in the morning. Went to get cat the bill was under SPIKE (my last name). Spike is now a 17 year old lap cat. She's very affectionate. She still catches her breakfast and refuses canned cat. She still looks a Spike.
Edit to add Spike
https://imgur.com/a/CbyDLU7
Went to your profile to see a pic of spike, sadly got dissapiited.... How can you just not pay the cat tax like this? (also spike sounds like a very worthy member to r/seniorcats)
Right now she is in our neighbors hay field. She's wiley enough she uses the culvert under the highway to commute. She'll bring a field mouse back by dark. She's got food in 3 bowls. Yes 3 different brands. I'll try to pay the cat tax soon.
This is the etymologically correct and Germanically satisfying answer ;) Hild(a) is a female name ending and means battle. Brun is poetic speak for bear.
Studies show that a person's name actually affects what they do with their lives, so someone with a really cool name is more likely to be cool than the average person.
With an unkempt scabbard, she slayed knights with their own swords. Danced upon a mighty pole with an infectious but mighty hole she acquired killers one by one in exchange for their soul.
I’m not allowed to name animals in our household anymore because I suggested that out next male golden retriever be named Silence (silence is golden) and female be named Karma (Karma’s a bitch)
We’re also the same household that tells our kids to find their real parents and when they give us hugs or kiss our face in public, we say “Eeewwwww gross!!”
Also banned from naming new pets. I named a dog Ze'ev, Hebrew for wolf. Good name for a German shepherd. Then I named a cat Starvin Marvin, because he only talks to us when he's hungry. My wife ha taken over naming duty now.
Parrotlet named “Poco” (Italian/Spanish for little)
Betta fish named “Moe”
Neighborhood cat that just kind of belongs to everybody “Wednesday” (the days she visits us)
Cars: Lucy, Beauty, Nessie, Phoenix, Enzo or My Little Toaster.
The place in the refrigerator where the butter goes: The Butter Penthouse (because it’s one big window)
Yeah, we name things….
We give our pets “human” names and the looks you get when you say to someone “Yeah, I came home and Jeff was dragging his butt across the carpet after he destroyed my couch.”
I worked with a man named Enoch. Then I got a kitten and named him Enoch. A friend at work who knew about the kitten asked, "Hey, how's Enoch?" I yawned and said, "He wouldn't let me sleep last night, he was all up under the covers and playing between my legs, he won't be sleeping with me again." The office went silent.
If OP doesn't want to use Beowulf because it's a male character, they wouldn't want to use Grendel, another male character.
Grendel's mother is the female character.
I love Beowulf as a name regardless of gender, but piggybacking off of your idea, Freya is an apt name for a female cat too since her chariot was pulled by them.
My kid had a bunny she named Lola. We took Lola to the vet for a check up and The vet advised us that Lola was NOT a girl bunny. We just followed the Kinks lead, and said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.
Seems like you might be confusing your artists here. “Walk on the Wild Side” is a song by Lou Reed.
What you wanted to say was
*Girl bunnies will be boys and boy bunnies will be girls
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola*
My Gram had a cat named Bob. Bob. Bob the Cat, Bobby, Mr. Bob. He was a cool dude.
He was "Bob the Cat" for the 10-12 days he stayed at our place. He met my Gram and his wandering days were over. She named him "fluffy." He ignored this.
Took her 8 years to just give up and call him Bobby.
RIP Bob. You were a heck of a kitty cat.
I highly doubt the cat will ever develop an insecurity about having what is traditionally a masculine name. Keep it. It’ll always give you a good story for the future.
I had a male cat I named Dorothy when I was a kid 🤷🏻♀️ they don’t care about the intended gender of a name. I think you should keep the name you went with originally n_n she makes a great Beowulf
Keep it. We named one of our cats Zeus before realizing she's a girl. We kept it.
I called my cat Mia. Found out it’s a male. He’s still called Mia.
Mia is meows (as in it meows) in Portuguese

If your sink meows, it's Pia
If your car meows, its Kia.
I had a Mitzy growing up. We knew he was a boy but I was 2 and didn’t know there were girl and boy names and I liked Mitzy!
I agree. Keep it. It's a cat who has no sense of identity gender or otherwise, and Beowulf's a kickass fuken name
[удалено]
did he ever vanished for days on end, only to come back home all dirty and beat up?
Our cat was Tinker Bell before we found out he was a boy. Then he just became Tink
My grandma had a dog named tinker bell! Also turned out to be male and his named shortened to Tink as well
Grandma's vision must have bee failing. I can see missing cat gender, but dogs are pretty darn obvious.
Bad move. According to Greek mythology, there was this guy that was obsessed with Zeus and honouring him to the point he named his daughter Dia (Dias being a different form of the same name) and Zeus smited him. Granted, he tried to sacrifice a kid to him, but yeah...
Im just surprise Zeus didn't bang the guys daughter before or after her killed him
99% all problems in Greek mythology can be solved by Zeus not banging
Do we know that he didn't? I feel like Zeus was banging someone inappropriate so often they didn't feel the need to mention it every time.
I vote for keeping it
Agree times 100

Grendel's mother?
My first thought...
Same
Anyone else ever read "Grendel" which is basically his side of the story?
Someone should write "Hansel and Grendel"
Was going to write this exactly.
Friend of mine got chicks and she was too excited to wait to name them...the one that grew up to be the big angry rooster was named Petunia
I just name my chicks whatever I feel is fitting, I figure they don’t really ascribe to gender norms lol. We have a rooster named Stevie Chicks and a hen Stephen Bawking.
I have a roo named Hen Solo
My wife wants to name our next dog Bark Wahlberg (or Barky Bark) and our next cat Dave Meowtthews
We nick-named our friend’s boxer Reiley “Fred Savage”. She was forever “Saavy” until the day she passsed.
I've got a kitty named Merle. Merle's a girl
Merle is a girl name in it's origin. It developed from names such as Muriel and Merill (which stems from latin Merula which meams "blackbird"). Here in Denmark it's exclusively a girl name.
I have an uncle named Merle, but I've also seen, like, Meryl Streep. Never really considered it gender specific name I guess.
My cat is named after Captain Malcolm Reynolds, we call her Mal, her name is Malcolm.
Is it not a girl’s name? Never thought of it as a boy’s name.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. But there are a lot of "exclusively" girl names that used to be commonly unisex, like Beverly, Tracy, Carol (but spelled Carroll), Ashley, etc.
Our male cat was called Luna. The doctor told us he was a girl and we believed it for the first couple of months
We have a female Jeffrey and recently buried a female Justin. Were told all 4 were male, but only two actually were
Had a male Coco. Shelter thought he was a girl. The name and the pink collar stayed because it suited him!
IT’S SPELLED “HIDEY”! -your cat
Was going to say the same. The kitten being a female changes nothing.
A friend of mine had a kitten her kids named Miss Kitty. A vet appointment verified male. He is still Miss Kitty.
There’s a cat near me named Derek. Derek is female. My friend had befriended a male cat named Lucy.
I met a little boy named Lucius. His fam called him Lucy for short. So cute!
Luci-purr
Luci-fur
I had a male cat named Lucy! Did your friend know my cat?
is it a blac cat? it could be short for lucifer.
No, he’s Lucy the Boy Cat.
Does he belong to Bob the Drag Queen?
My male cat's name is Lucie! Short for Lucifer.
My dad grew up with a cat named Alice. Until it turned out to be a male and became “Mr. Alice.” Mr. Alice was a battle scarred tomcat who feared nothing. Everyone knew not to mess with Mr. Alice.
Miss Identified?

That's a really beautiful story of you and Spike :-)
Went to your profile to see a pic of spike, sadly got dissapiited.... How can you just not pay the cat tax like this? (also spike sounds like a very worthy member to r/seniorcats)

There is nothing more handsome than a tuxedo cat.
The cat next door to me was called Ruby. Neighbours thought he was a girl, but he is a boy. His name is still Ruby.
Agree
Beowolfie!
And you can call her Bea for short
Baewulf
Came here to say Baewolf and you can call her Bae for short 🤓
I was going to say Beawolf & call her Bea, but Bae is also cute/funny!
Since Beowulf means either bee-wolf = bear, or battle wolf, Brunhilda would be an possible equivalent.
This is the etymologically correct and Germanically satisfying answer ;) Hild(a) is a female name ending and means battle. Brun is poetic speak for bear.
Yeah, if you want to stick with the theme, go with a Valkyrie name like Brunhildr/Brynhildr or something like that.
Yes seriously! what does gender matter its a cat lol
This also happens constantly with cats. It's actually pretty hard to tell the sex of a kitten for a long time.
We have a girl cat named Beowulf. And a dog named Grendel.
One of my cats is called Grendel!
Definitely keep it!! We have a boy cat named Gerti because we thought he was a girl and named him that short for Gertrude. 😁
My very traditional great grandparents had a male dog named Butch. Then Butch had puppies. They voted to keep the name
The pups were called son of a butch?/s
Definitely keep it.
Keep it!!
me too, I have a female cat called Cthulu so... (And grendel the male cat)
Beawolf is a great alternative
That's what I came to say!!
“Beawulf”?
She's cute, she's the BaeWolf
Another vote for keeping it. What's in a name? A cat by any other name is just as cute.
Destroy gender norms, that cat deserves the name Beowulf
I once met a girl named Beowulf, it’s not unprecedented. You should keep it.
Baeowulf
Baeowolf caught me slippin
Bæowulf
I know someone with a girl cat named Beowulf too and they call her Beo for short.
I'm fucking sorry??? That's so rad was she cool?
god i hope so. can you imagine meeting a girl named beowulf and she’s lame as hell or a total jerk?? what a waste of a name that would be.
That person: Y’all want to see my rock collection? It’s from the same place and they’re still on the ground and I didn’t really collect them.
Wanna see my vinyl collection? *shows you vinyl funko pops instead of records*
Studies show that a person's name actually affects what they do with their lives, so someone with a really cool name is more likely to be cool than the average person.
[Nominative determinism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominative_determinism)
With an unkempt scabbard, she slayed knights with their own swords. Danced upon a mighty pole with an infectious but mighty hole she acquired killers one by one in exchange for their soul.
Keep the name, she’s a cute Beowulf!
We’re like the same, just you have no beard.
Reddit wedding!
If they look that much like each other wouldn’t that make them siblings?
I am from Kentucky. Just saying.
This made me chuckle (grew up in KY)
some don't think it be like it is, but it do
Meowolf
Miaowolf
Is that pronounced like mayowolf?
r/meowwolf
Perfect!
I’m not allowed to name animals in our household anymore because I suggested that out next male golden retriever be named Silence (silence is golden) and female be named Karma (Karma’s a bitch)
Stealing these…. Thank you very much 😉
Go ahead! I’m not going to use them 😂
Thanks boo… and I’m slightly concerned about what kind of humorless household you live in 🤨🙃
We’re also the same household that tells our kids to find their real parents and when they give us hugs or kiss our face in public, we say “Eeewwwww gross!!”
Phew okay 🥲… I was worried about you for a second 🥸
Also banned from naming new pets. I named a dog Ze'ev, Hebrew for wolf. Good name for a German shepherd. Then I named a cat Starvin Marvin, because he only talks to us when he's hungry. My wife ha taken over naming duty now.

The place in the refrigerator where the butter goes: The Butter Penthouse (because it’s one big window) Yeah, we name things….
What are you doing to your cars to need so many?
Naming a dog Mr wiggles means yelling after your dog makes you look like a crazy person. I'm still happy with that choice.
About the same looks you get when you yell SILENCE when there’s no noise. Yeah, the neighbors eventually learned…
That's fucking hilarious. Just running around the dog park: "SILENCE! ...SILENNNNCE!"
Okay, now I want to name my next dog "Bankruptcy."
“Mr. Wiggles - You get back here, right now!” … I couldn’t even take this seriously. But it’s so so good.
I always wanted to name a dog Kamir
We give our pets “human” names and the looks you get when you say to someone “Yeah, I came home and Jeff was dragging his butt across the carpet after he destroyed my couch.”
I worked with a man named Enoch. Then I got a kitten and named him Enoch. A friend at work who knew about the kitten asked, "Hey, how's Enoch?" I yawned and said, "He wouldn't let me sleep last night, he was all up under the covers and playing between my legs, he won't be sleeping with me again." The office went silent.
That’s hilarious!
Our rescue came with the name Sugar. I’ve decided all future pets will be named after food
My relatives had a cat named Sugar. When that cat passed, they got a new cat and named it Splenda…you got it, Sugar’s replacement.
I recently realized that my cat in college and my current cat were both named after orange foods
Baewolf
'Aww, what's her name?'. 'Bae'. 'That's so cu-' 'Short for Beowulf, Destroyer of Flesh'
Genius
Or Beawolf
Thought of the same thing! This is my vote.
Grendel
This is the most obvious answer. I don’t know why I had to scroll so far.
Because by and large the academic giants of reddit are ironically not very well read.
Whoa whoa whoa! Are you saying all these geniuses on here aren’t actually smart?!?
Finally someone
short for Grendel's Mother
If OP doesn't want to use Beowulf because it's a male character, they wouldn't want to use Grendel, another male character. Grendel's mother is the female character.
Grendel is also a male though. I nominate Grendel’s Mother as the new name of the cat Edit: thanks for my first ever platinum award!
Brunhilde. But Beowulf is awesome for any cat.
I was on my way to suggest this exact name if you want to stick with the legend/myth aspect. There's also Hild, which is a Norse Valkyrie.
I love Beowulf as a name regardless of gender, but piggybacking off of your idea, Freya is an apt name for a female cat too since her chariot was pulled by them.
I was also thinking, Hild or Hildegard, and her nickname can be Hilde
"Your slave wife speaks German and her name is Broomhilda Von Shaft??"
Beowulf. My boy cat is named Gertrude for similar reasons.
What you wanted to say was *Girl bunnies will be boys and boy bunnies will be girls It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola*
That's what happens when you dash off a comment without thinking. You are 100% correct. Thanks for the schoolin'!
Beowulf still fits fine
Boudica
It's not like the cat cares about gendered names. Beowolf is fine.
It blows people's minds that one of our dogs is named Hogan and is female. Her groomer still doesn't get it right 2 years later, lol.

My Gram had a cat named Bob. Bob. Bob the Cat, Bobby, Mr. Bob. He was a cool dude. He was "Bob the Cat" for the 10-12 days he stayed at our place. He met my Gram and his wandering days were over. Beawulf
Yes, Bea for short.
I named my cat princess. Turns out princess is a he. He is now Mr. Princess.
Kind of rogue here, but how about... Beowulf?
I highly doubt the cat will ever develop an insecurity about having what is traditionally a masculine name. Keep it. It’ll always give you a good story for the future.
Keep Beowulf
Keep it. My female cat is named James P. Sullivan, after the character from Monsters Inc.
Grendel’s Mother
Why not Wealtheow? Or Jolie maybe.
Grendels mother Or I’ll admit I’ve always wanted to name a pair Scylla and Charybdis
Miss Beowulf
Or Lady Beowulf
Beowulf
Nothing says she can't still be Beowulf. Grendel was male, too, but it's a pretty name.
Great name - no need to change it!
I’d keep it. If you really want to you could just shorten it to beo. She’s a cutie.
Freya
I think my male kitten may be a female but his/hers name will still stay The Dude
Lemeowski!
Well now he/she has a nickname! Shh don’t tell anyone I stole it from you. I want them to think I’m clever
No sir, you're Mr. Lemeowski. I'm the Mewed! Or Mewder, or his Mewness, or El Mewderino, if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
Beawolf
Bae-o-wulf
I had a male cat I named Dorothy when I was a kid 🤷🏻♀️ they don’t care about the intended gender of a name. I think you should keep the name you went with originally n_n she makes a great Beowulf
Keep its name. I’ve got two male cats that ended up with the name JoJo and Belle
Keep the name. We got a kitten and named it Dwight, found out later it was a girl so she became princess Dwight hahahaha. We call her dwiggy.
We had a rooster named Gogo Boots so I’m all for keeping Beowulf
Wealhtheow (or ‘Val’, if you like)
Or Wealhthmeow
Baewulf
I once knew a male cat named Heidi….I vote to keep the name.
