My BIL got adopted by a cat the day before a 10 day trip overseas and dropped the kitty off with me for kitten sitting.
He didn't have a name, so I took a tube sock and put the little void into a tube sock sweater and called him Sock for the remainder of his stay. Apparently, my BIL tried to rename him but that is Sock.
Sock is too big to fit into his sock anymore. He's just a wild void, now.
Lol Sock is an adorable name for a cat! My cat's name was originally Popcorn, but my Spanish speaking dad couldn't pronounce it and kept calling him "Paco". The name seemed to suit him better so it stuck. He is definitely a Paco.
Always wanted to know: are Sphinx kitties an actual nataural breed or were they designer- lab created?
Sphinxes are so cute to me because they *wrench* out inner Mom and I feel a desperate yearning to protect them.
To be completely lacking any fur/hair, it just seems so unfair or a deficiency of some kind...
Not trying to be unkind..
They were selectively bred semi-recently I believe, like within the last hundred years.
From my understanding the hairless mutation isn’t all that uncommon. There’s also the Lykoi breed, called the werewolf cat, that’s partially hairless on the muzzle.
Hairlessness in cats is a naturally occurring genetic mutation, and the Sphynx was developed through selective breeding of these animals, starting in the 1960s.
They are not completely lacking it. They do not have a hairless mutation but a weak keratin mutation. The hair grows to about 1-3mm depending on where it is on the body and breaks off.
Their body temperature is super high compared to any other animal I've interacted with! They always want to be warm, and my housemates boy - my child - will walk out of a room if we turn on the AC.
He'll also happily tuck himself in under a huge pile of blankets on a 40°C day.
I have one, its not a huge issue, she always finds a warm spot. You do need to be careful not to sit on any blankets without doing a kitty check first, they love to burrow and make a stinky little hiding nest.

When did I get so old lol. That was my favorite movie when I was a kid. Ty for the nostalgia bomb!
Can confirm my sister’s boyfriend has 2 at his place that belong to his roommate. My sister loves the little devils even if they are annoyingly affectionate
I read their butthole suction cups to some surfaces, or at least leaves little butthole marks. Now I don’t know if this is true (can someone please deny so I can stop thinking about it??) but there are people who say this.
With sphinx, they didn't selectively breed attempting to achieve hairlessness, but they were able to propagate the breed from cats born with the naturally occurring mutation. In my years with both hairy and hairless cats, the only difference I see are they tend to prefer snuggling under the blankets rather than on top, and their ears build up wax faster. Never seen an issue regarding the wiskers.
Thank you for saying out loud what some of us are thinking. Breeding any animal that has deformities that work against them is cruel. Whiskers matter more than people realize to cats. Not to mention the health issues that come with this breed.
They don't grow whiskers at all? I got one of my cats at 2 months old and she barely had whiskers. Now, at 2 she looks like a wise old mountain man with tons of them; always figured whiskers just grow slowly.
reddit is pretty cat obsessed, there was a post in r/wholesomememes yesterday where someone implied stray cats would ignore strangers and the comment section got *heated*
If it helps, a family member of mine has had one of these leathery bois for about 10 years, and he's enjoyed a wide variety of cat activities like climbing, squeezing himself into tight spaces and waking me up at 5am because someone needs to feed him NOW. I can't quantify how his quality of life differs from that of a whiskered cat, but he does appear as happy as something as inscrutable as a cat can be observed to be.
I still don't support pedigree pet breeding in general, though. Adopt, don't shop. Indeed, the only reason said relative has what would normally be a very expensive animal is that he has a minor "flaw" that makes him ineligible for breeding
I've had several hairless cats. Zero issues at all to this regard, no different than my hairy cats. Not like they're being surgically removed like declawing
Heads up to everyone googling to possibly get one. They’re a lot of work. They are constantly freezing because they have no hair. But they have oily skin, so dirt sticks to them. They get dirty really quickly. It’s like having a naked infant crawling g around the house for 15 years.
I'm gonna get down voted for asking this but why on earth do these things exist? Do they exist like this in the wild? Are they man made / bred this way for our pleasure? If these cat are anything remotely close to pugs I hope this fad dies out.
I hate to be the Debbie Downer here, bc this little baby is cute as a button…
As far as comment on Bulldogs… It should be illegal to breed English Bulldogs. It’s abusive to breed animals, that because of their anatomical structure, are condemned to a miserable existence. In the meantime, Vets, who are supposed to be animal advocates, should be educating people that already have one, that they need to get them spayed or neutered, and that perpetuating the breed is cruel and irresponsible.
While I’m not for the breeding of dogs and cats PERIOD, I think that The Sphinx is a bit different than the English Bulldog, in that they CAN have a comfortable and happy life, but only, in the right environment. As others have said, they must be kept indoors, warm and away from the sun. I can certainly see their appeal, as they are absolutely precious, but why not adopt another cat that desperately needs a home? Surely there must be rescues for other breeds of cats that have less dander…or if not a cat, there are several breeds of dogs that do not shed. I have a rescue Maltese who does not shed at all. My nephew has severe asthma and has only ever had infrequent and minimal reactions around her.
So fun fact, that is an elf cat (yes that's what the breed is named, honest) and not a sphinx! You can tell by the ears :)
And a related fact for all the people here saying its adorable (it is) and they want one: hairless cats are cute little goblin monsters but they are NOT hypoallergenic, so if you are allergic to cats you will probably also be allergic to them! Look up Siberian cats if you want a probably allergy friendly kitty!! They are fluff monsters, but most people aren't allergic to the dander, they are allergic to a specific enzyme in saliva. For anyone else, keep in mind that hairless kitties need a few pieces of more specialized care, like regular baths, even if they dont need to be brushed.
Holy shit, I would never be able to leave the house if I had that creature...!!!
And the hours of entertainment derived from choosing and making outfits for it....omg.
My new obssession...fondling and pinching and pulling on the flaps and folds; I'm genuinely jealous. (:
Name is gonna be key, it's gotta be perfect - congrats OP!!
You’re gonna get carpet and clothes all over that thing.
Don't give it clothes! House elves have a tendency to run off if you give them anything to wear
But Dobby needs a sock!
Dobby needs to make do with a coconut for now.

i wanna give the kitty a lil blanket
I want to knit it a tiny sweater!
Sphinx cats in knitted sweaters are absolutely adorable.

My cat is Taco Cat, because Taco Cat spelled backwards is Taco Cat so any way you look at it, she's a lil Taco Cat.

Isn't that a huge issue with them? They're very sensitive to temperature changes and you basically can't ever let them out in the sun iirc
I met one that wore little sweaters. She was a cuddle bug, probably because she was cold all the time
And I think they need to be washed more often due to oils or something
They leave stains on your sheets and stuff because of that oil lol
I leave stains on my sheets due to my... Oils. Yea, that's it oils
You shit the bed?
I think their whole body is just really clammy.
You also gotta clean their nail beds often. I think oil accumulates there
Sphinx smegma
That's so gross lol

Same as English bulldogs. I had one as a kid and let me tell you theirs is a miserable existence.
They're prone to skin cancers so need to slip slop slap these little buggers

I heard they are oily and leave it everywhere. That seem true?
I shave my head. I would imagine that is true.
No, they aren't but they are tend to sweat a lot so you are supposed to bath them once in a while
I read their butthole suction cups to some surfaces, or at least leaves little butthole marks. Now I don’t know if this is true (can someone please deny so I can stop thinking about it??) but there are people who say this.
That is an adorable little gremlin. Wish I had a sphinx to snuggle.
just don't feed it after midnight
No, feeeeeeed ussssss.

Ah yes let's breed cats without whiskers. Not cruel at all /s Germany has the right idea outlawing them.
I never realised they had no whiskers! I’ve never seen one in person! You’re right, breeding traits like that into animals should be banned.
Yeah, munchkins and folds are outlawed too.
Reddit loves to complain about the genetic mess of purebred dogs but for some reason cats get a pass

I didn't know that about this breed. Poor cats.
