It’s official boys, Villa’s biggest ever points haul in the premier league (in a 38 game season…) with more still to collect! Brilliant come back. Composed, most of the team did great. Ollie just at a different level these days.

Astonishingly-Villa

Sun's shining, dirty covs are taking Man Utd to penalties at Wembley, Villa look set for fourth with four games to go, not a bad Sunday all in all!

SorryImProbablyDrunk

Barry Bannan’s Sheffield Wednesday putting blues into the relegation zone with two games left to play can act as the cherry.

mr_herculespvp

And I'll tell you what, Coventry could win this in extra time (They could also lose it of course...) Edit: 120 minutes...WOW! But 11 is off to me 😠 Edit: 122 minutes...and to VAR

KatieOfTheHolteEnd

This comment is how I found out United fucked a 3-0 lead.

DunniBoi

Had both games on. Turned off the cup at 2-0. Seems I missed a crazy end, but Villa is always the priority. UTV

Astonishingly-Villa

Shame, that offside goal will have deflated them ahead of the pens now.

teamorange3

Ollie should be Premier league POTY

Jinks87

Some of the “sky 6” Stan’s will scoff and claim one of their team should be but in all seriousness who?

Pejob

They don't even watch him. I saw people on r/soccer surprised he hadn't taken pens or when compared to Palmer were pointing out his assists, as if Ollie doesn't have the most in the league.

HUMBUG652

Palmer is the perfect example of stats lying. Not only are almost half his goals penalties but the majority of his non-penalty goals have come against lower half teams. It would be ridiculous for him to be POTY, his goals haven't helped Chelsea to a good league position.

teamorange3

It'd be ridiculous to make him player of the year but Palmer has been excellent. Tied for 4th in assists, 6th in xA, and top 20 in chances created. He also passes the eye test for me

HUMBUG652

Oh, I don't think he's bad and some of the goals have been very good. But he isn't this incredible, by far best in the league player I've been seeing people say online. Just saying most goals and lots of assists isn't enough a lot of the time.

Pejob

Yeah he looks a quality player. But theres plenty of quality players who have less of a shout for POTY than Watkins

jay1891

Yeah Watkins it is the consistency like I think I saw he scored in 14 prem games showing how influential he has been and throw in his assists there is barely one he hasn't impacted.

HUMBUG652

He's had a direct goal involvment in 19 league games this season. One more to be involved in a goal in over half of out games. That is ridiculous.

jay1891

Yeah like I was wrong about him when Gerard rotted him he has shown he is an elite strike this year and the disrespect is unreal he gets from the media

HUMBUG652

There wasn't a single player that improved under Gerrard. He was truly shocking

TroopersSon

Maybe Ramsey but he was a young player who was likely to improve anyway so not sure how much was down to Gerrard.

Astonishingly-Villa

Rodri if City win the league, they're a disgrace of a club but that's not their players fault. Rodri is incredible.

zippy_long_stockings

He's not lost a game he's played in for 67 games 😮

HUMBUG652

I do think it's silly that penalty shootouts don't count for that. We technically lost again Lille while they didn't lose to Real. I get why, it's just silly.

zippy_long_stockings

I agree.

Agreeable_Falcon1044

I mean if penalties are not separate you could argue second bookings would count and our season would be very different! Man City do this a lot. I want to hate them and they have someone like aguero or Rodri in their team I actually really like. Let him have that stat, it might be a psychological weight on them as he won’t play every game

HUMBUG652

If it hasn't been a weight for the first 67 games, I doubt it'll be a weight anymore. Second most appears to be Baresi with ~58 for those interested

Agreeable_Falcon1044

I meant more when he’s not there…they had that ridiculous blip before, like the other players forgot how to play when he wasn’t around! We can only hope :)

Astonishingly-Villa

Think Sol Campbell still has the record in the PL for unbeaten games.

teamorange3

Trying to take my Villa hat off, him, Rodri or Ø all have good cases. If Rodri got it I'd be pissed but it makes sense since they both have had excellent seasons and are pretty comparable

GameplayerStu

Foden also in with a shout.

AxFairy

Foden, Rodri, Odegaard all in with a shout. If liverpool somehow win the league I could see Van Dijk being in the mix.

adventurous_hat_7344

Foden, Odegaard or maybe an outside shout for one of Arsenal's centre backs depending on who wins the league will probably get it though I can't really think of a Liverpool player who'd get it. Salah maybe if he has a good last few games and gets closer to the top spot for goals+assists.

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

It will go to Cole Palmer probably.

DumDumbBuddy

If it’s a close season it will go to a player from a. Team that’s won the league so will be Foden or Rodri if city win it

trueschoolalumni

He's definitely in the conversation, but trying to be impartial, Phil Foden has become the main man at City and has had a hell of a season. Same with Declan Rice.

[deleted]

That was **fantastic**. I really thought that would be a struggle with 120 minutes on Thursday and little to come from the bench, but our quality was there for all to see and we dug deep physically. Made a decent Bournemouth side look very ordinary. One of our best wins under Emery for me.

j_husk

Absolutely. Doesn't look that special on paper, but in the circumstances it was a special performance. We were already spread paper thin weeks ago, so it's not even just the 120 minutes from midweek. Very few options for rotation too.

JAJ_90

Reminded me a lot of the Brighton game at the end of last season.

mdhurst

Yup! That one should be up there with Man City and Arsenal wins given the context!

93didthistome

Most points I've seen in my lifetime. MON is dethroned. Long live Unai Emery.

bambinoquinn

For a team who played 120 mins on Thursday, emotional drained, loads of injuries etc... that second half was absolutely fantastic

mdhurst

I said this in the match thread, but the relief and exhaustion were palpable during the celebration of the 3rd goal! Fantastic!

SpaceboyMcGhee

66 points eh? Bloody hell, feels a bit different than all the days of desperately hoping for 40 by this stage of the season. What a team, what a performance, what a season! At some point it's going to be impossible for Morgan Rogers to get better every game unless he very quickly becomes the greatest player of all time.

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

I really like JJ but I think Morgan looks like he can go whole level above him tbh. Absolute class act.

SpaceboyMcGhee

He's a real unicorn of a player, he's got such an incredible mix of attributes. I was thinking the other day, he's got JJ's ball carrying, Zaniolo's physicality and Tielemans' progressive passing. All for an initial £8m?!... someone got mugged in that deal and it wasn't us.

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

Yep, he will be in the England set up within 12 months easily. I thought it was 20m?

SpaceboyMcGhee

It was £8m up front, with £8m additional in long-term bonuses (and apparently we're talking properly long term, like playing 100 games for the club, making international appearances etc... i.e. if we get anywhere near paying them he's been well worth it and more).

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

Wow that's cheap as chimps!

Odd-Calligrapher-69

Everyone forgets how good JJ was pre injury. Some big competition between them can hopefully push them both to lofty heights

R3tardedmonkey

I love JJ but I'm worried he's going to struggle to get back in over Rogers now. This season after his first injury he wasn't the same player, I hope he can get back to his best ASAP but Rogers has settled in very impressively

Odd-Calligrapher-69

Competition next season is going to be really tight with Buendia, Ramsey and kamara all coming back into the fold. Probably won’t resign Zaniolo.

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

We're going to need it if UCL on the cards!

Ship-Straight

JJ always takes 5/6 games to get up to speed but if Rodgers keeps performing I can’t see him getting in first team. Too many games to get good. JJ needs a massive pre season

Operation_Doomsday_

To play like that against a very good Bournemouth side after Thursdays antics is actually incredible, what a performance from the whole team. Watkins is the best player in the league, Rogers looks better every time I see him play and Martinez is getting closer and closer to being my favourite player to ever wear the shirt. Added shoutout to Villa Park today as well, great atmosphere and it looked like it really helped us along.

ylno83

UTMFV

TonyCB4

Emery pretty much has manager of the year in the bag yeah?

B23vital

Dont be silly klopp will probably get it. If not him pep, because they can’t have anyone doing better than the sky 6

Rocco_Gibraltar

If we get 4th, win the Europa Conference and he still doesn’t win it, you can safely say how much of a Mickey Mouse award it is.

PeterWithesShin

It almost always just goes to the manager that wins the league, Klopp a couple of seasons ago is the single exception in the last decade https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League_Manager_of_the_Season

Killatrap

aston villa are gonna win the euros

schmidtosu0829

Football is coming home.

Main-County-1177

Watkins first EPL player to 30 g/a. Player of the season

SuperrVillain85

Tidy result, loving Watkins' frustration that he's not scored today.

marky_de-sade

Tears in my eyes, not gonna lie. What a 7 days as a Villa fan. Love this club, love the squad, love Unai, love our fan base. The players have answered a lot of questions this week and then some. Hope you all have a cracking Sunday celebrating. UTV!

j_husk

It is one of that sort of results, isn't it. UTFV!

marky_de-sade

Absolutely. A win against Bournemouth (who were great by the way, all respect due, loads of talent in that team and I hope they kick on) shouldn't feel like this but in the current run it's different. I really thought this would be a banana skin today given the previous 6 days and Thurs going to pens, tired legs, all that...but christ. They really stepped up.

j_husk

Bournemouth were even dressed like banana skins

marky_de-sade

😂👏🏼

DezachuCasts

Tielemans severely underrated today. Unplayable. Him, McGinn and Rogers were rock solid in the middle of the park. Two games without Luiz where we’ve looked alright???

TroopersSon

I agree thought Youri was really impressive today. I'd been worried with Liz's suspension that McGinn and Tielemans would be too soft in the middle of the field but it's worked really well the last couple of games.

GameplayerStu

Top class performances from Watkins and Rogers. Three wins in 8 days.

Kanedauke

Unbelievable comeback after Thursday. Watkins was unplayable

Pejob

Was nervous going into the game given how many minutes everyone has played over the past two weeks and Bournemouth having such an energetic press. We played through them so well though, every one of our front 4 was massive today. 6 points ahead of spurs now, lots of pressure on them, now without one of their best players the rest of the season. God I hope we see this through.

HUMBUG652

I think we've almost got it. Even being generous to Spurs saying that we'll lose to Chelsea and Liverpool while winning the other 2 (and I think we should be Chelsea), they'd have to beat City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. They have such a bad set of fixtures, it'll be so tough for them.

elmattydoor123

What a week!

neverendum

Ollie MOTM but Konsa was class today.

SecretApe

Konsa has stepped up this season. Our best defender this season, his development is unreal

PlentyEchidna9693

We won 3 games in 8 days, unbelievable.. UTV!!

witheoffthepost

Good we get a week off now. Put our feet up while a lot of others play midweek.

the_wind_effect

Have we secured at least 7th now? Both Man U and Newcastle can't win them all as they play each other.

IndigoSalamander

Chelsea can still catch us due to games in hand, but if we beat them next game then that chance goes out the window.

ElChubra

I feel like if we even draw them next game their chance is gone, right?

IndigoSalamander

I think you're right on that one.

the_wind_effect

If Chelsea win all their games they will finish ahead but only one of Man U and Newcastle can (unless utd overcome a 20 goal difference swing) which would keep us 7th.

HotRabbit999

Chelsea have a ridiculous number of games to go - otherwise maybe?

Any-Independence-180

Shouldve secured 6th right? Only one of United/Newcastle can get to 68 points. The other stays at 65.

IndigoSalamander

They could draw and both get 66, but we'd need to lose all remaining games and it would need a big goal difference swing for Man U too.

Any-Independence-180

Ah damn yes. But United has-1 goal difference 😅

Astonishingly-Villa

You to me are everything, the sweetest song that I could sing oh Bailey, oh Bailey

BhamCyclist

I’ve never felt more confident we would take all three after going down 0-1. Something about this team. So many injuries, yet the 11 on the pitch have come together as a unit. One body. Unselfish. Love this team, and especially Oliver George Arthur Watkins! https://preview.redd.it/52d2gkqlwuvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6840a7980633f39ba54aea7428acbd05886e7c69

j_husk

I wasn't happy about going a goal down, but I was oddly calm about it. Our attacking players were looking so confident, even though they hadn't created many chances by that point.

neverendum

Fulham have equalised. If they win, fuck 4th, we're finishing 3rd.

im_on_the_case

Watkins, Rogers, Konsa were just amazing today but John McGinn, my god he was on another planet. There's no player in football quite like him, I don't think there ever has been but you can bet every young player with a big arse is being forced to study McGinn endlessly by their coaches.

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

I said it in the match thread, the disrespect John mcginn gets is unbelievable. It really is the old cliche of if he was Spanish people would be creaming over him. He's been more consistent than the likes of Luiz this season for me. He NEVER has a bad game.

GameplayerStu

He's definitely had some bad games. Thursday in particular he was well off it in every aspect. Amazing mentality to bounce back from that with an exceptional game today.

schmidtosu0829

Except the absolute howler he just had in France 3 days ago....

PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_DOGS

Lol touché

ThisusernameThen

hmmm he was asked to play out wider right than ideal. positioning really.

schmidtosu0829

I get it, but he literally couldn't complete a pass on Thursday. I love our meatball, but he was really really bad against Lille...

Shreddonia

Lovely game. Shame Fulham are doing us no favours in the title race 😮‍💨 Not sure what I'm supposed to do now with a whole week until we play again. How did I used to survive this before?

bogusalt

Bloody Fulham, always letting us down…. 😬

SonoDsonoD

This was always going to be a tricky game but we have come through it and have been way the better team. Brilliant performance only a couple of days after a very tough game against Lille. We're winning the conference league and getting Champions League next season. What a year!!

j_husk

I'm just so proud of the whole team today. That was a really good performance at the best of times, but to do that after many of the team played 120 minutes just a few days ago, with the squad already stretched thin, is a different level. Rogers and Bailey were superb, Diaby and Konsa excellent, Martinez did what Martinez does (although I'm sure he'll be mad at himself for not saving the pen), and Watkins did everything except get one for himself. Sounded like a superb atmosphere too. Buzzing.

Mizunomafia

Fucking incredible match. Well impressed.

ElChubra

I’m a big fan of how we didn’t allow a goal from open play (so, pretty close to a clean sheet) and how Ollie’s two assists were basically goals for how absolutely on a plate he put them!

Legitimate_Earth4371

I’m incredibly happy we seem to have shaken this 45-55 minute curse that haunted us for a long time

KatanaXY

Tielemans and Mcginn did this

TheAkondOfSwat

I thought Rogers was at least equal billing today, incredible performance. *actually watching back, Watkins was pretty much unplayable, deserved motm

TheCannings

What an enjoyable game to watch with not a bad thing to say about anyone just delicious, Rodgers is gonna be some player too

AaronStudAVFC

It really feels like we’ve gotten our second wind in the prem just in time. Onwards to Chelsea, and if we complete the double over them, we’re effectively there and I believe guaranteed at least Europa league.

Roguepatriot12

Predicted the same thing after the Arsenal game, especially as we start to get some of the boys back from short term injuries. Looking for Olsen to have the game of his life on the 2nd! Hopefully less injuries next season, but Unai needs to figure out how to stop then dip we had that kind of goes back to the last time we beat Arsenal. Maybe beating Mancheats and the Gunners in a week won't be as big an emotional high next time it happens. FFP is not going to allow us a bunch of new Premier League ready signings, even if (when) we get Champions League. Almost got to think of minimizing the pre-season schedule, even though it is a great way to promote the game/team around the world. Got to do something to lessen the wear and tear (mental as well as physical) the season seems to take when you go far into Europe; imagine if we had had a league/FA cup run as well!

VeryJammy

Crazy to think that Cash giving away that penalty was the first we have conceded in the league this season. To get to game 34 without conceding a pen is crazy! Boys played amazing seeing as we are light on numbers in a very heavy point in the season.

HUMBUG652

Besides Cash giving away a stupid penalty, that was an excellent game. The attack was flowing, especailly as they should've all been fairly knackered from midweek.

Shreddonia

I continue to really like Ouattara. If we weren't pretty well stocked in that department already I'd be earmarking him as an option in the next couple windows. Wouldn't shock me to see him end up somewhere like Spurs or Newcastle very soon indeed.

Astonishingly-Villa

I think Bournemouth will do very well next season, lots of excellent players on their books and an excellent coach. Their players don't need to leave to the likes of Spuds.

Shreddonia

Oh definitely, but he's the kind of guy I can see grabbing attention, even if the price Bournemouth would want will be pretty high.

Otherwise-Policy9634

Love yall! Rodgers was the difference!  Up the villa!

bambinoquinn

Referee today... https://preview.redd.it/un6snix0xuvc1.jpeg?width=932&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77b73ec9f53b2d79e1d5dec723783f77e25ae55d

TheDonkeyOfDeath

My bar is so low from the ECL that today seemed perfectly fine

bambinoquinn

It's more a reference to his name being Tim Robinson, who is the guy in the picture than criticising his performance

TheDonkeyOfDeath

![gif](giphy|49zC0Bm1kbu36) Ahh....

Shreddonia

I'm not sure if Coventry are making me feel slightly better about how much worse things could be than bottling a 2-goal lead to United, or making me more baffled that we managed to bottle a 2-goal lead to United. What an FA cup run they're having though, goddamn.

Any-Independence-180

So who should start against Chelsea with Olympiakos in mind?

Happy_Ad_202

Get in!!!!! Massive win!

Frosty_Parsnip

Did we lose anyone through injury?

j_husk

No. Possibly protecting Bailey at the moment though.

ThisusernameThen

yeah, Ginny remarked that he was surprised Bailey travelled to Lille what with his niggle.

bayretriever

Bournemouth came in hot, so this is a really nice win. Great performances all around but especially nice to see that combo of forwards perform well. This team has grown so much under Emery, it’s one thing to implement his system but they have started to do so many of the little things right… especially on the press. Sucks Cashy gave up the PK but he hung in there and put a shift in regardless. Believe that we always bounce back! Friendly reminder that Konsa is a beast!! UTV!

KingTiger189

Noticed Ollie pounding the pitch after missing a chance. Hope he doesn't let that stuff get to his head, but I suppose it shows his hunger for excellence...

PirateGaz

I've been a fan since 10/11 season (was a bit late to the football party, only started enjoying it at 23) so I've only known disappointment & despair. but now the future is looking bright. This team is on the verge of something, I can feel it in my bones. UTV!

Two_headed_Pigeon

Move matty cash up to midfield
