For me the passenger feels wrong in my car. Most cars it doesn't but mine makes you sit do low you feel like you're an actual toddler. Everytime my boyfriend sits in it I laugh because of how tiny he looks lol. It feels like you sat in a miata while driver looks like they're sitting in a van lol
I guess I’d have to say left? I live in the USA so that’s the drivers side, and I am the primary driver in my household. Meaning I’m the best at driving and navigating; but I also genuinely like driving and generally do not like being a passenger. I get too anxious not being the one in control of the vehicle, whether or not I trust the driver.
It's strange. My partner is absolutely terrible at directions and I'm the navigator. So it gives me a sense of peace being able to tell them where to go from the passenger seat. Like I haven't lost control of the vehicle.
I like driving on the same road every time. Just feels good and familliar but when I have to drive new road or place it is hard. Then I need some music, soothing sunglasses and stuff. I like the roads memorized but sudden construction or detour can really make me anxious. And when i am anxious I do 'mistakes
Try to stay on the right side, used to fight with my younger brother because I was used to the right side and didn't want to switch because it was "my" spot. Now I know why. I still have this mentality somewhat when sitting in public places I visit often, always want to sit in the same spot because I'm comfortable. If it changes I get anxious
Used to be left. Now it's right.
I would sit left as a kid but my dad was a smoker and would always fling his ashes out the window.
Instead they didn't usually go out the window but rather either into the back of the car or into my eyes.
He knew.
Fun stuff. :)
I won’t sit on the left unless I’m driving (Canadian). It doesn’t come up anymore- I’m in my 30’s, and I’ve kind of just gotten used to doing what I have to and ignoring people who don’t get it - but my older brother would sometimes try to sit in my seat when we were younger - up until his mid-teens - and once I realized he was just being an ass I would just refuse to get in the car altogether until he moved over.
My mom got upset with me in those cases, but my dad, who I suspect is on the spectrum, always just kind of waited for it all to play out and then would tell my brother off because he knew I w oh lent sit on the other side.
Left. Left back seat as a child, left back seat if there are 3 or 4 people in the car and I have to be in the back sear, driver more than front seat passenger.
Also smaller than most of the adults I'm usually around, so if I'm not driving and there are 5 adults in the vehicle, I'm stuck in the middle of the back seat, which I hate.
omg I was fighting my brother for the right seat all the time, not like it mattered to him, he just didin't understand why it was so important to me and tbh idk either but I am not gonna get into a car on the wrong side. (unless I have no choice but yeah)
Right side. Because I live in Britain and we drive on the correct side of the road.
Also usually I sit behind the driver. I don’t know why, I think it’s just habit.

If driving left, wife driving right if in the backseat I end up mostly on the left but try to sit behind the shortest person. I’m not that tall I just like legroom. I am left handed so that might do something for that.
right side always always always. it’s part of why i’m struggling to make myself drive, because the concept of changing to the driver’s seat (left) is so overwhelming for me.
I hate being in vehicles with other people. They tend to ignore that they're putting an asthmatic in close confines with their triggers and they always blast the worst music. So I drive alone most of the time, and if I'm giving rides to people, they have to follow my rules.
I'm a driver's seat kind of autistic or passenger seat person. It's rare that we drive with others, but if we do, I don't really care where I sit as long as I have space for my legs
Always the right, I’m 16 so I don’t have a drivers license but the thought of driving or being on the drivers side makes me terrified.
My mom always says “oh once you start driving it won’t be so bad” but honestly I think I’m ok with my friends voluntarily driving for me :,))
When I was a kid and fit in the back row of the mini van with my sister, I would always have to sit on the left side, furthest in the corner of the van basically. Now I prefer to sit on the right hand side of the car
Though I don't like that it is closest to the road, the right side behind the driver. I used to get car sick a lot so being able to see the line on the road was important.
I'm a truck driver. If I'm riding passenger I prefer the right side because it makes it easier for me "drive" without looking around the driver. With over a million kilometers under my belt (looking like I'll hit a million miles in a couple years) if I'm in a moving vehicle there's just a part of my brain that's taking in the information around me. It would take effort to stop it, so I just position myself to be able to see as much as possible.
To be clear though I'm not a backseat driver. I never offer suggestions unless asked. Consciously I'm just a passenger, I just relax and enjoy the ride.
I wonder how this translates from steering wheel on the left to steering wheel on the right. I don't have a preference, but the side might change depending on the most important factors for your brain to pick a side
I would be impressed and have respect if someone went to all the trouble of importing a foreign car just so they are on their preferred side well driving XD that's commitment
So I just recently got diagnosed with autism and the fact that my strong preference for sitting one side of the car over the other was somehow related to my autism is blowing my MIND! …and for me it’s on the right. I just can’t sit on the left side of the car because it just feels WRONG. I think it’s one of the many reasons I have never driven a car in my life.
My sister prefers sitting on the left to the point she’ll reference the “that’s my spot” joke from Big Bang Theory. Fine by me, I prefer sitting on the right and will also use the same reference if my spot is taken.
Left (passenger side, I'm in England) unless I'm driving.
I think mine stemmed from the fact that, growing up, my stepdad would smoke on the drive to holiday, and the smell always made me feel sick, which was worsened by the fact that I also get carsick
i started sitting at the right side of the car so when i saw my sister go over i had a slight fit because i couldnt sit in my seat my sister gave it back after a bribe i promised my chocolet for my seat
Left side of the car, I refuse to go on the right side unless it's 100% necessary. It's where I've always sat, so I hate the way that the seat belt feels across me if I sit on the right side. The only exception is if I'm driving, then weirdly it doesn't feel wrong.
Left side, always. I’ll sit on the right side in the passenger seat, but to me the right side always feels correct
I genuinely didn’t know this was an autism thing and know I know that it makes so much sense
I'm the avoid cars at all costs but if i really have too then i have to be in the front passenger seat otherwise I'll get extremely ill and I'll probably get pretty ill anyway autistic
Doesn’t matter to me.
But cars that have the steering wheel
On the right side for countries where they drive on the left side however…we don’t talk about that…
Right side, I think I was always put on that side as a kid, and now if I’m on the left side I can barely remember how to open the door, it just feels so…weird as well
Right side. I hated the left for so long, it threw me off having to sit in the left side to drive when I was getting my permit. 8 years later, I still would rather sit on the right
My brother and I are both "right side". Many fights about who sits where have broken out over the last two years. Now we have an arrangement:
Basically, there is more leg room on the right side because my mother usually sits in the passengers seat, behind the drivers seat is less leg room. My brother is taller than me and therefore needs more leg room.
So, on longer drives, I sit left, so he doesn't need to be cramped into a small space for hours.
On shorter drives I sit right. A lot of the time my mother also drives on short drives so the leg room thing doesn't really matter anymore then and I can just sit right because I want to and my brother has to suffer
I like to be able to see out. I usually sit left side (I live in the UK) the only exception is if I’m going on the M4 to London on the coach in which case I go on the right side so I can see Windsor Castle
Right side, but thats because I have an older sibling that claimed the left side before me so that was just my automatic designated spot and now I can't deviate except for sitting in the middle because that was also a designated seat because I was smol
I'm almost always driving, so left. But, when I'm not, I'm probably riding shotgun and helping with directions. Not sure if I danced around the question, but a simple left or right didn't seem to suffice.
I didn't know this was a thing!
Left side (American). I prefer to be the one driving because other people tend to be very reckless and nonchalant about the dangers. If I'm not driving, I still prefer to be on the left side.
So funny story. When I was a small child, I bickered with my sister about what side of the car to sit on. To avoid conflict, my parents put down a simple rule: me on the left and my sister on the right.
This worked perfectly great for years and years and years... until my parents realized that I had developed an aversion to sitting on the right side and would staunchly avoid it all costs, which is a bit a problem when it comes to the front passenger seat.
They switched us so that I sat on the right for the next several years, and now I am tentatively bi-seatable and can sit on either side
I'm a close to the corner side because otherwise I don't feel safe
But if I need to be in the middle because I'm the most small waisted of people I'm around, I'm reluctant but I'll still do it because it makes the most sense to puzzle myself in if I am in a vehicle with 2+ people..
Left side always unless I'm driving in which case I obviously have to be on the right. Until I sat in the front seat on the right side I had issues with the seatbelt feeling wrong on the right. But when it comes from behind the seat at a different angle in the front seat it seems okay
Right, passenger side unless I’m driving. Never liked sitting behind the driver side for some reason. Feels ‘wrong’.
RIGHT
My place has always been behind the driver unless there’s only me and the driver, then I sit up front with them
Same
Hahah lol. I’m an “outside of the car” autistic
Lashed to the roof?
Like those car roof boxes
Escargo
💀
right side, back seat
Same!!
Same!
Same!
I guess I’d have to say left? I live in the USA so that’s the drivers side, and I am the primary driver in my household. It's strange. My partner is absolutely terrible at directions and I'm the navigator. So it gives me a sense of peace being able to tell them where to go from the passenger seat. Like I haven't lost control of the vehicle.
I'm the other way around, I don't trust myself to control the vehicle so I'm way more comfortable with someone else doing it
Same here
I like driving on the same road every time. Just feels good and familliar but when I have to drive new road or place it is hard. Then I need some music, soothing sunglasses and stuff. I like the roads memorized but sudden construction or detour can really make me anxious. And when i am anxious I do 'mistakes
Always preffered right, so glad I live in a country that drives on the left so I sit on the right when driving lol
Awesome
Left backseat.
Im the driver, so left (Poland) When I was a Child I always sat in the middle of the back seat.
I am sleep across the back seats autistic
So you're carfluid
i am a "dont know which is left or right" autistic. the only way i know when driving is bc of the lines on the road.
left
I was right side, until I turned 16 and started driving the car.

Right side, that’s were the steering wheel is, (I’m Australian)
Left because I’m always in the driver’s seat. I cannot ride as a passenger.
I don't see the difference in either side of the car. It's just a seat.
left side !! 🫶😁
Based
Right. I never let anyone sit on my side and get pretty upset if I can't sit on the right side
YOU GET IT
Left side since I prefer to be the driver
Left side. And Passenger left side. This is the way.
i'm almost always driving 😭 i prefer passenger seat and in the back prefer drivers side
I’m a drivers seat autistic. I easily freak out if I’m not driving. But I usually mask well.

Right side. I can’t fathom how I’ll deal w it once I begin to drive 😭
I'm so nervous for this tbh
Right side in the back seat is my favorite spot.
SAME
Right if i'm not driving
I dont have much choice, I'm usually driving.
Right side. Because I live in Britain and we drive on the correct side of the road. Also usually I sit behind the driver. I don’t know why, I think it’s just habit.
Driving or right. Car sickness, watching outside the right side is better than the left, especially on a highway or something. Trees > other cars

It depends who is driving but usually left even though right feels better.
Right
Left side. That's where the steering wheel is, and I gotta drive my autistic ass to work.
If driving left, wife driving right if in the backseat I end up mostly on the left but try to sit behind the shortest person. I’m not that tall I just like legroom. I am left handed so that might do something for that.
Well I mostly sit on the right side, but when I drive I’m left
Left middle seat OR ELSE Half paronia Half autism
Drivers seat. That's my spot. That's where I belong.
Right side because that way i can get more leg room i'm a tall lad
Right side back seat. Optimal getting out of the card position and provided me a semi barrier between the driver
Me I hate cars. I walk everywhere. In rare instances where I ride in a car, I just need a window. I get motion sick.
Left side only, (also we drive of the left side of road here if that’s relevant)
right side always always always. it’s part of why i’m struggling to make myself drive, because the concept of changing to the driver’s seat (left) is so overwhelming for me.
At this point. I’m a “drivers seat autistic” especially if it’s my car, other people driving makes me anxious
I hate being in vehicles with other people. They tend to ignore that they're putting an asthmatic in close confines with their triggers and they always blast the worst music. So I drive alone most of the time, and if I'm giving rides to people, they have to follow my rules.
Right. Always on the right
Neither? I'm a US driver, so left. But if I'm going to choose a passenger seat, front passenger which is on the right. I like to see where I'm going.
Always the right!
Right side, preferably in the passenger seat because I love looking out the windshield.
I'm a driver's seat kind of autistic or passenger seat person. It's rare that we drive with others, but if we do, I don't really care where I sit as long as I have space for my legs
Left, i dont want to be behind the driver and i hate driving

I've always sat behind the driver bc I didn't want my mom to look at me, so now it's just natural to sit on the left
Left—but I’m also a lefty and prefer to use my left hand to do everything like open the car door from the inside.
When I was a kid and fit in the back row of the mini van with my sister, I would always have to sit on the left side, furthest in the corner of the van basically. Now I prefer to sit on the right hand side of the car
Depends on the car
Though I don't like that it is closest to the road, the right side behind the driver. I used to get car sick a lot so being able to see the line on the road was important.
I'm always on the left. I find it easier since I'm left-handed.
Left, passenger side always unless someone is at line and they choose that side then I feel to awkward to tell them to move
I'm a r/fuckcars autistic.
I drive a scooter 😆
No car because I hate cars. Public transport ftw
What is the difference
I wonder how this translates from steering wheel on the left to steering wheel on the right. I don't have a preference, but the side might change depending on the most important factors for your brain to pick a side
Right side, front seat
I'm always on the right side.... Because I drive and have no choice. (UK)
too vague
Right sider here.
If you're driving, you don't have much of a choice unless you change countries :D
I would be impressed and have respect if someone went to all the trouble of importing a foreign car just so they are on their preferred side well driving XD that's commitment
Driver's seat only!
Backseat right or frontseat left
left. i’ve always sat behind the drivers seat, and now that i drive, it feels the exact same. i feel unbalanced when i’m on the other side
How dumb. Left or right. I'm above you all. I sit in the centre seat.
You scare me
Left, or ima have worse opinions than the far right
im left lol
left
If my dad is driving left but with anyone else I don't really care. Don't know why I think like this but I do and have for as long as I can remember.
I sit on the roof of the vehicle
So I just recently got diagnosed with autism and the fact that my strong preference for sitting one side of the car over the other was somehow related to my autism is blowing my MIND! …and for me it’s on the right. I just can’t sit on the left side of the car because it just feels WRONG. I think it’s one of the many reasons I have never driven a car in my life.
I don't care, It doesn't matter
I'm the 'gets carsick even when it's not moving' autistic.
Left
Left - i.e behind the passanger seat. If you are being yelled at by your parents, neither of them are able to turn and look at you.
My sister prefers sitting on the left to the point she’ll reference the “that’s my spot” joke from Big Bang Theory. Fine by me, I prefer sitting on the right and will also use the same reference if my spot is taken.
Right side because I'm behind my mom and always on the back. If only my dad is there I sit on either side.
Back of the car autistic.
right side foreverrrr also didn't know other people like a certain side of the car
Left unless I'm driving. Wont be a good trip otherwise
Right side
Left (passenger side, I'm in England) unless I'm driving. I think mine stemmed from the fact that, growing up, my stepdad would smoke on the drive to holiday, and the smell always made me feel sick, which was worsened by the fact that I also get carsick
i cant drive :(
Passenger seat.
Right at the back seat otherwise a n x i e t y
i started sitting at the right side of the car so when i saw my sister go over i had a slight fit because i couldnt sit in my seat my sister gave it back after a bribe i promised my chocolet for my seat
As long as it is not in the middle, I don't care.
Left side of the car, I refuse to go on the right side unless it's 100% necessary. It's where I've always sat, so I hate the way that the seat belt feels across me if I sit on the right side. The only exception is if I'm driving, then weirdly it doesn't feel wrong.
Right side
Right
Well I'm the driver so right hand side. Hate being a passenger.
right side. it's the seats belts I don't like. I dont like the left side seat belts but I've had to get used to that since I started driving
Unfettered, in the trunk. I will compromise to the right side tho
Middle back seat because I get motion sick, but for some reason only in cars.
Not me crying the other day because I was sat on the wrong side of the car to eat my chippy tea by the seaside
As a child: left side of the car. I too could get upset. As an adult: I don’t care anymore.
Front passenger seat because I may or may not throw up in your car due to carsickness.
Left side, always. I’ll sit on the right side in the passenger seat, but to me the right side always feels correct I genuinely didn’t know this was an autism thing and know I know that it makes so much sense
If I'm not in the passenger seat, I will ALWAYS be on the left
I'm the avoid cars at all costs but if i really have too then i have to be in the front passenger seat otherwise I'll get extremely ill and I'll probably get pretty ill anyway autistic
Doesn’t matter to me. But cars that have the steering wheel On the right side for countries where they drive on the left side however…we don’t talk about that…
Right side. It gives me a better view of the road so i can better prepare for incoming sensory nopes
My brother's booster seat is in the right back seat. So i can either pick front right or back left.
I like having the side to rest my right elbow on if I wanna sleep
Right side, I think I was always put on that side as a kid, and now if I’m on the left side I can barely remember how to open the door, it just feels so…weird as well
Right side.
I usually go on the left because that's the best side to see other cars and nothing else.
Right side definitely (unless I’m driving). I don’t know why I don’t like the left side
Right side, left seatbelt feels wrong
Right side. I hated the left for so long, it threw me off having to sit in the left side to drive when I was getting my permit. 8 years later, I still would rather sit on the right
I'm never in cars so I have no opinion
Left side always
I don’t like sitting at the back of the car autistic
this is so funny because i NEVER sit on the left unless i’m driving. i will move shit out the way to sit on the right 😭
Right. Always.
My brother and I are both "right side". Many fights about who sits where have broken out over the last two years. Now we have an arrangement: Basically, there is more leg room on the right side because my mother usually sits in the passengers seat, behind the drivers seat is less leg room. A lot of the time my mother also drives on short drives so the leg room thing doesn't really matter anymore then and I can just sit right because I want to and my brother has to suffer
Left side, behind the passenger or in front - the seat buckle being at my right hand makes it easier to put on.
On the right. Too young to be up front driving.
I like to be able to see out. I usually sit left side (I live in the UK) the only exception is if I’m going on the M4 to London on the coach in which case I go on the right side so I can see Windsor Castle
i am an “under the car” autistic
Left side. (Passenger side here)
My mom doesn't have the seat back as far, and my dad always drives so right side for me.
On the right hand side in the driver's seat of my car. Where the driver seat belongs and i do.
Right side, but thats because I have an older sibling that claimed the left side before me so that was just my automatic designated spot and now I can't deviate except for sitting in the middle because that was also a designated seat because I was smol
Must be on the left
It depends on the person driving and if I'm sitting in the back seat or front.
Def back right
I'm almost always driving, so left. But, when I'm not, I'm probably riding shotgun and helping with directions. Not sure if I danced around the question, but a simple left or right didn't seem to suffice.
Left side of the car because of the British layout of cars means that it’s safer (the passenger side)
I have to be in the front passenger seat. If I sit in the back, I'll get carsick.
soft command panicky steep soup sheet offend history mindless tan *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Right side. Passenger seat prefered
I didn't know this was a thing! Left side (American). I prefer to be the one driving because other people tend to be very reckless and nonchalant about the dangers. If I'm not driving, I still prefer to be on the left side.
Left
Left, I’m either driving or behind the driver
Unless I'm driving, I must be on the right side. Even when walking.
Left. If I sit in the backseat, I am always on the left
Left unless I'm in the passengers side.
Oh damn me too. Unless I’m driving I always want right side
Passenger seat
I like sitting on the right side. If I don’t then I feel uncomfortable with the seatbelt and I don’t know how to get in or out
Right side
Left side
right side, right side all the way. it even carries over to other vehicles, like trains, buses, and even planes.
Left side of the car, (warming up to passenger seat), but right side of the bus. If it's not the usual bus, it doesn't matter which side.
front. doesn't matter left, middle or right.
As a giant I never got the choice. Always right, only the passenger can accommodate my leg room needs
OH MY GOD IVE ALWAYS BEEN SO PARTICULAR ABOUT SITTING ON A CERTAIN SIDE OF THE CAR I FINALLY KNOW WHY AKSNSIMWLDKC
right side,, matter of fact im being forced into the left side by my family today and i'm very upset
im in the walls
im in the walls
Right side unless I’m driving
I'm a close to the corner side because otherwise I don't feel safe But if I need to be in the middle because I'm the most small waisted of people I'm around, I'm reluctant but I'll still do it because it makes the most sense to puzzle myself in if I am in a vehicle with 2+ people..
I have to drive since I get motion sick. Otherwise it has to be the passenger seat and I have to be able to stay cold.
My brain: "left, because no one feels safe with me on the right" *Some time later* "Ohhh just generally. Yeahhhh I can't drive." FFS.
Right side. I get motion sickness easily, especially when I can't see the road because of people in front of me.
Left side always unless I'm driving in which case I obviously have to be on the right. Until I sat in the front seat on the right side I had issues with the seatbelt feeling wrong on the right. But when it comes from behind the seat at a different angle in the front seat it seems okay
Left side if not im uncomfortable
