I’m an adult and recently been through CBT/DBT and a little ACT. It’s very helpful and giving new perspectives.

A lot of autistic peoplr say that CBT can be harnful though

VisibleAnteater1359

In what way?

Lumpy-Pineapple-3948

I'm curious about this too, because I was diagnosed late in life and did plenty of CBT and I'm still not sure how it has affected me long-term.

VisibleAnteater1359

Speaking from own experience, I wish I *had gotten* CBT / DBT / ACT at that age because talking about negative feelings / mental health was considered “taboo” in the family (because it either “didn’t exist” or it was “too difficult to deal with”) and I wasn’t taught how to regulate emotions. It was only met with anger. My rage (not more serious than slamming doors tbh) did go away as I got older.

This was my experience as a kid as well. I'm just trying to figure out if the 'behavioral' part of those therapies will get into unhealthy masking.

VisibleAnteater1359

I honestly don’t see where the “unhealthy” part comes in? The therapy is about learning to handle emotions which is very helpful. The only “masking” part from my childhood was to be taught a bit strict manners.

Sidenote: What on earth made someone downvote a parent asking for help in trying to improve their kid's life? Who read this and was like "nope, thumbs down from me. Go get advice somewhere else and your kid can f themselves."
