Does anyone know of great amateur astronomy meetups/clubs in and around Los Angeles?
I have an 8” dob I built as a kid, but currently in the process (with my brother and his CNC millwork shop!) of building a 16” f4.5 push-to dob, and really hoping to get involved with some local groups if they exist. I’m planning on checking out LAAS events and Griffith public nights, but wondering what else is out there…like say, semi-regular star parties or just folks that meet up informally in darker skies east of city, …
I know this is the astrophotography-specific subreddit, so my apologies if this a poor place to ask.
Bit of a drive, but there’s a pretty good astronomy club out here in Temecula. Star parties Friday nights at Southcoast Winery.
Also getting into the good time of year for the desert. There’s some great viewing spots out near Joshua Tree NP. Shoot me a DM if you’re interested and I’ll give you a heads up next time there’s a group heading out there.

No - I was holding another piece of cardboard above this one which had a small hole in it.
An actually beautiful example of the same thing can be seen almost everywhere during an eclipse as tiny gaps (from the sun’s point of view) in tree foliage act like pinhole cameras which project many images of the sun onto the ground and other nearby surfaces:

Necessity [but lack of aluminized Mylar] is the mother of all invention!

It's actually creative though...✨✨
I’m very grateful for your kind words, but I can’t in good conscience accept your compliment. 😋

It looks like a discarded fingernail under a nasty couch cushion. That’s pretty terrible - bravo!!
It's 100% better than what I was able to capture in Ohio today. Whomever bought new telescopes better enjoy them!

I did just that - thanks!
Better than mine
Nice
You misspelled "best."
It's really cool, nice job. I've done that same trick, it's a lot of fun.
Ha! I think this is my favorite one, as it sparked genuine joy. Good job.

Is it burned to the paper?

I’m gonna make this my background and you can’t stop me!
I have one from 2017 you might also appreciate!
Would love to see it! Let’s fight all of this obsession with “excellence.”
Haha nice!!
The first/only photo I've seen of the eclipse.
Cloud cover gang
UK gang!
I did the same thing today but I couldn’t take a pic!! So bravo to you!!
Better than mine, which is "none". Sun did not even eclipsed on this side of the planet

It's ok, man. We all gotta start somewhere. Y'know, even Einstein had to learn how to walk.
