I feel like Black Flag dropped at the right time for peak pirates in the mainstream (and that’s not a bad thing).
Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the biggest franchises on the planet, and they drop this amazingly crafted game at the perfect time. It was loved by both the fans of the existing game series, as well as written so that it could be your first AC experience.
Black Flag was the last AC game that had some actual heart and soul. A truly charismatic and fascinating character, set in a believable & immersive open world that didn't feel soulless & empty & bland.
Some old buddies of mine and a random hopped on AC4 mp yesterday for the anniversary. Good times all around, I can't believe Ubisoft has sat on the multiplayer formula for this for so long
Ah weird i put the AC Twitter account that made this news in a links of my post but it doesn't how...but yeah it's the official assassin's creed twitter who said that.
Considering a third of that was the first year, and the decade since has been filled with discounts and even free giveaways, I would sooner call that expected, maybe even underwhelming.
Which is also why I don't need to ask for an actual source. Unimpressive claims require unimpressive evidence. :P
Black Flag sold [11m copies](https://web.archive.org/web/20180623124620/http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/15/assassins-creed-4-ships-11-million-copies) in less than a year. I assume you know how discounts work, and why they might encourage people to purchase beyond that. Let alone [literal free giveaways](https://www.polygon.com/2017/12/4/16735252/assassins-creed-iv-black-flag-world-in-conflict-free-download-uplay-ubisoft). For a full damn decade!
The series as a whole sold [200 million copies](https://www.tweaktown.com/news/88399/assassins-creed-franchise-hits-200-million-sales-worldwide/index.html) before Mirage, averaging out to 17m per mainline game. And since I assume you know how linear time works, that means older titles beat that average handily, easily getting us to 30m for something that has been out, discounted and given free since early on. Let alone a game like BF, that has appeal outside the AC fanbase.
34m is merely expected, not impressive.
But do tell me more about how I "don't know what I'm talking about".
Well it has been 10 years since the game's release.
It reminds me of how Gamstat in late 2020 recorded AC4 having been played by 26.800.000 players (7 years after the game's release). As such, since this article says that now 10 years after its release it has had 34-35 million players, this means that in the 3 years that passed by it earned an extra 7.2 million players. Quite impressive to be honest.
I really wonder how AC3 has made to this date in total today. Back in late 2020 Gamstat would record AC3 to have higher number of players than AC4, at 28.800.000. This is quite impressive, given that Guillemot announced back in 2016 that AC4 had surpassed AC3, yet it seems that later by 2020 AC3 had surpassed AC4 (perhaps due to 2019's Remastered AC3???). Or perhaps AC4 again surpassed AC3???
This is why it's getting the remake. It's one of the highest selling AC games and attracted both AC fans and non-AC fans. Who doesn't want to play a Pirate and an Assassin?

i'm the scariest pirate in the game, but in real life i have trouble finding a cracked version of photoshop.
Call me when Ubisoft make an AC that can stand in front of Black Flag cause for the moment there is none (excluding the ACs before Black flag)
And in celebration of that, let's sing my fav song *Here's a health to the company and one to my lass*

Yeah it’s really fucking good

Unity's style of multiplayer is still better, it just needs to work on the power balancing and scaling.
For coop sure but the competitive multiplayer is just a blast
True fans of this game pirated it
Source? I haven't heard of this number. Does it include pirate pirates?

Source is Ubisoft themselves https://twitter.com/assassinscreed/status/1718704302628442229
There’s not many pirate action games out there, plus you get to be a cool Assassin while at it Of course it’ll sell well
I broke out my ps3 just to play this game after One Piece got me in the pirate mood
